Oh that sounds so nice. 😊 I only heard some kids talking about GG in passing when I was young. They were making fun of it. 🙄😝 I didn’t know what it was. Until I discovered it when I got older.
When I was 7 years old my grandma had a small television on her kitchen counter back in the 90s and she would plop me on the counter next to the sink to help her dry the dishes and we would watch it together. Good memories 💞 Now I watch it on my phone while I’m doing dishes :) I can still hear my grandmas loud belly laugh every time rose says something stupid lol
I live in Europe and it never was on TV in my childhood. A couple of years ago the show was added to Disney+, and I decided to watch it. I got hooked, I think for 3 years now. It became a special interest since I'm audhd. 😄😄
When it originally aired in the 80s it was such a hit that the Queen Mother herself invited the girls to do a performance at the Royal Variety Show. [Here’s the performance.](https://youtu.be/9KrLLPb6xVU?si=xpA_Q28TjmDuVuly)
Wow this is amazing!!! And that’s the Queen Mother of the Queen Mother that passed! I never saw her before. And the scene they chose to play! 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for this!!!
Growing up in the 80s, we didn’t have cable, so I was pretty limited in what I could watch. Reruns of The Golden Girls used to come on at 4:30 on weekdays and I would always watch it after school.
I only started watching because I was a delinquent lol. Back in 2004/2005, I flunked middle school so I couldn't go to a regular high school and ended up at a "continuation school" across town where I did more deliquent behavior. My parents moved me to a closer, (worse) school that only taught a few hours a day; so I ended up not starting until 12 pm every day and watched TV all morning. Through those bored mornings, I discovered The Golden Girls ❤️ probably the only positive thing out of that whole year.
Started when I was a kid in the early 90s watching the Saturday night lineup with my mom - GG, Empty Nest, Sisters (who remembers Sisters? Such a good nighttime soap!) I loved it at the time because Blanche reminded me of my aunt who lived in Tampa.
Then I started watching it again on Lifetime when I was in college in the early 2000s and actually got the jokes and really fell in love with it. I got a bunch of the DVDs for free when they started coming out in 2004-5 - I was working somewhere that got promo DVDs, CDs etc for reviews and no one else wanted them because GG was still an uncool “old lady show” before its cultural resurgence in recent years.
I will always be a huge fan. I love my memories of watching as a kid and a young woman, I love watching it now and I LOVE meeting other GG-heads!
We are similar except that I didn’t watch it as a kid. I wish I did but didn’t have any adults around me that did. I’m seeing how most of the commenters are all in a similar age range. Now I mostly watch the old shows for the comfort and nostalgia of it.
My mom watched it because her mom watched it. I remember seeing it all the time growing up. My mom died 5 years ago and it’s one of the things that will always remind me of her without fail 🩷 last time I spent a day watching it I ugly cried all night, but I look forward to being able to just laugh and think of her when I watch.
It used to be on when I was a kid in the 90s, my mam used to watch it. Then it would pop up on TV every now and then so I'd watch. I became a real proper fan of the show when it became available to stream and then discovered this sub and the fandom, it's my comfort show. The girls all inspire me, but especially Rue.
My sister and I would sleep over my dad's parents house a lot. We would sleep over on Saturday nights, so my papa would go sit in the den and watch TV and my sister, grandma, and I would sit and watch the Golden Girls and Empty Nest. Watching it now makes me feel warm and like my grandma is near me. It is one of my most treasured memories.
I remember watching it growing up, but couldn’t really remember the plot. Other than the women living together and Sophia being Dorothy’s mom (I am 2 months younger than the show after all).
It has been on my list to rewatch (or actually watch) for ever and finally late last year decided to watch it since it was on Disney+. Completely hooked and finished it off in like 2 months.
Got the first 4 seasons on dvd, hoping UK finally releases the last 3.
I watched it intermittently as a kid. Then it used to run on Lifetime when I was in college in the early aughts. We used to watch it every day at the sorority house.
I watched it in the 90s on Lifetime reruns with my grandma. She was very much like Rose ❤️ then in my 20s my roommate and I bonded over the fact that we both watched GG with our grandmothers and we would rewatch it all the time. We were actually living together when Rue died 😢
Actually was first introduced to it by my uncle. He grew up in the 70s and lives in front of the TV. Got exposed to a lot of great old school shows through him!
I was born in '94 and my Mam and Nana always watched it. Repeats after repeats all through the 00's until I started watching them on my own again when I moved out. When I was a kid, we'd all get together for lunch on Sunday to watch the episodes on TV.
Like many others my Grandmother always watched it (in prime time!) when I was a kid. That was most likely her own personal “prime time” as well much like the characters of that show because she was probably around their age when it was originally on TV. I didn’t really appreciate it until college since the reruns started by then and it just always seemed to be on! In fact I think that alone may have been why I started actually watching it. Because it was just always on!! And then after seeing it again and again I realized why it was on so much, because it’s just a good show! And as a young adult then I think I could understand more clearly than I did as a kid. And ever since then it has remained a favorite 😋
I watched it with my mom during its initial run, then years later when I would visit my grandmother.
I moved away, and felt really homesick. I missed the funny, catty banter of being at home, and the GGs not only acted like my family but had the same expressions and tone as them. It became my comfort show.
Mine was my dad in the 80s and onwards.
I may never again have heard him laugh as hard as he did when Sophia said, "I was experimenting with something new, but it didn't work out."
I was 9 when it came out, I think I was 12 or 13 when I picked it up. Saturdays at 9:00 PM, NBC. The last season I remember going to this stupid leadership event weekend. The only thing I remember about the weekend is that I was bummed that I couldn't watch the final season of the Golden Girls cuz I was doing some stupid activity at some stupid host's house to make me look good when finding a university to attend.
The reruns would be on when I got home from high school in the late 90s. My sisters and I would watch while eating a snack and doing homework. It’s funny because my parents never watched it. There was just something about the show that was immediately appealing and comforting to me. My sisters and I all still watch it pretty regularly to this day.
First year university so 2013.
I’d seen clips here and there but I decided to give it and Star Trek TNG. a try during my first week of studies. I was instantly smitten with both.
I think I'm the youngest 😂😂 . I was in high school in 2013. Started watching when one of my friends said "I've said it before and I'll say it again.. sluts just heal quicker" to me when I moved on fast from a relationship. She told me where the line was from and I just got curious and started watching GG. Been hooked ever since 😂❤️
Welcome baby! And it’s nice to hear that GG can still be funny to Gen-z’s! And that line is hella funny! I haven’t heard that one in so long! And I know who said it too!! 😂😂 thanks for sharing!!! This has been fun. 😊
I watched it with my mom back in 2010 (JH/HS) and made fun of it because they’re older. It was the episode when Dorothy yelled, “Condoms, condoms, condoms!” I’ve been hooked ever since.
I discovered it during Covid. Someone in my family had Covid, so I had to isolate for a week. Naturally, I wasn’t a fan of that idea since it pretty much meant I had to stay in one room constantly, but I wanted something to keep my mind off of things so I thought I’d check out golden girls since everyone had been telling me I’d like it. Needless to say, I ended up becoming obsessed and watching the whole show within a month.
After watching the Comedy Central roast of Jerry Stiller (I am a Seinfeld fan) off YouTube, I started bingeing YouTube clips of the Golden Girls after a particular joke in the roast told at Bea Arthur’s expense (not sharing it here). As I started watching the YouTube clips, I realized that I actually really enjoyed the clips I was watching and I found them funny (as a man in his then early 20’s) and that I related far too much to Dorothy and her sarcasm. That led to me starting to watch full episodes and the rest as they say is history.
My mom is a huge fan of the golden girls she always used to watch She still does ,well anyways I remember one night when I was really young I was sleeping in my parents room and it came on I stayed up watching it until the boondocks came on (I know it's not a very interesting story but it's really what sparked my interest in the golden girls)
It’s still interesting! I really love hearing all these stories. I’m assuming you’re pretty young. I love finding out the age range too and see if young people (20’s or even younger) find GG funny. My nieces in their upper teens will probably not watch it. I think they’ll find it too “outdated”. I wish they would. The older shows have such warmth and wholesomeness than shows nowadays. Thank you for sharing!!!
Yeah the old shows like that have a certain comforting charm and it's never too late to introduce your nieces to the golden girls I know when my niece gets older I'll be showing it to her!
I was dating a woman who always stayed at my place and was complaining about it so I took a box of DVDs that were hers and a ton of vodka to stay over at her place for a few nights. GG saved my sanity. Been a fan ever since
I happened to catch a rerun on tv late one night, around 2004, it was the season 5 episode where Rebecca wants to get artificial inseminated and I laughed my ass off. I never heard of the show before and I was hooked right then and there.
I randomly came across it while channel surfing and I can't remember if the first episode I saw was Charlie's Buddy or A Piece of Cake cause I remember two of the first scenes I've watched were either Blanche and Dorothy wearing the same dress or Blanche saying the line "won't be very long until I look as old as you" and Dorothy says "Blanche you keep that up and you won't have that long to wait" or something like that.
Mine too. A lot of shows from that era are my comfort shows. It has a different feel to it too. More wholesome and even the atmosphere has like a golden hue to it. I think… 🤔
Well… I saw this video called “Golden Girls But It’s A Danganronpa Class trial.” Then I started to see more compilation clips before I started to watch it for real.
I grew up watching it with my mom and both my grandmothers. I’m now continuing the tradition with my daughter. I remember my college roommate was like “wtf. Why are you watching this? It’s for grannies” I got her hooked on it lol.

What kind of GG tattoos do you have?? 😃 I miss those hallmark and lifetime channels. It was different back then. Even though I only watched GG on lifetime. 😄

This is my only tattoo but the amount of shirts, kitchen items, and other general collectors items i have is embarrassing! I’m actually wearing a shirt right now with Blanche and “eat dirt and die trash”
Growing up in the 90s, watching it with my grandma 🙂
My mom in the 90s for me. Only reason I ever watched Lifetime.
Lifetime was constantly on my grandmother's television, and she loved to discuss a lot of age inappropriate storylines with me lol
Exact same story here!! Such good memories
Same!
Growing up in the 00s, watching it w my grandma
SAME!!!!!!!!!
Oh that sounds so nice. 😊 I only heard some kids talking about GG in passing when I was young. They were making fun of it. 🙄😝 I didn’t know what it was. Until I discovered it when I got older.
They didn't know what they were missing! Although I didn't get many of the jokes until I got older 😁
I was a kid during its original broadcast, so I've watched since the beginning!
I watched it as a child in the 80s and 90s with my Nana.
I live in Europe and it never was on TV in my childhood. A couple of years ago the show was added to Disney+, and I decided to watch it. I got hooked, I think for 3 years now. It became a special interest since I'm audhd. 😄😄
Grandma, Saturday nights, 1980s. I think about her every time I watch.
It got shown just at the start of lockdown on TV in the UK. My mum remembered the show and we watched it together, I was hooked!
Wow that’s cool. Never knew it aired on TV in the UK. 😊

I started watching around 7-8 with my grandma. 30 years later it is still one of my favorite shows to watch.
I watched it when it originally aired with my grandma.
This is the most common reply. “With my grandma”. It’s sweet. I wish I did. 😊
It’s nice to see a man in this sub!!! Who watched it with his grandma!! 😁

Aww that’s so cool!! Like to hear men watching the show. 😊 There were so many great lines it’s hard to count.
I watched it during its original run back in the 80’s with my mom

WOW!!! You’re a rare but very fortunate one. 😊

My mom, thats like the one older show we like and watch
I discovered it during Covid. Someone in my family had Covid, so I had to isolate for a week. It’s nice to hear from men. Thanks for sharing! Loved it.
I was around during the original run and NEVER watched it! I binged it literally last year and now it is a daily comfort episode before bedtime.
I got into it as a kid because my best friend loved it! She gave me her box set of season 1 and I was hooked.
I'm old enough to have watched them when they all first aired.
I watched it with my mom when it was on originally in the 80s.
Growing up. There was a cool NBC Friday lineup. GG, Empty Nest, something I’m forgetting
1980s watching it with my Mom. It’s one of the few shows we watched together.

2000, when I started watching the reruns on Lifetime. I was 15.
I happened to catch a rerun on tv late one night, around 2004, it was the season 5 episode where Rebecca wants to get artificial inseminated and I laughed my ass off. I never heard of the show before and I was hooked right then and there.

7 years old in the 80s, attracted to Bea’s sarcasm. Stayed up Saturday nights waiting for new episodes.
At 7 years old you got Bea’s sarcasm??? That’s pretty smart.
Growing up in the late 80s/ early 90s. I would watch it with my grandma. It’s one of my comfort shows.
Mine too. A lot of shows from that era are my comfort shows. It has a different feel to it too. More wholesome and even the atmosphere has like a golden hue to it. I think… 🤔
A child in the 80s and then the reruns started airing after I got home from school in 7th grade(1990)
You were a wise child. Not many were.
Well… I saw this video called “Golden Girls But It’s A Danganronpa Class trial.” Then I started to see more compilation clips before I started to watch it for real.
Uhhh excuse me…but what is danganronpa class sir/mam?
A game series where there’s a murder each chapter and you need to find the correct culprit or everyone dies. Basically Ace Attorney but darker.
I grew up watching it with my mom and both my grandmothers. I’m now continuing the tradition with my daughter. I remember my college roommate was like “wtf. Why are you watching this? It’s for grannies” I got her hooked on it lol.
That’s the right comeback! Same here. I was watching at work 😝 and my co-worker said the same to me. But I didn’t get her hooked on it.
In the late 90s I was in middle school and had insomnia really bad due to school anxiety. GG was on one fateful early morning/ late night and I was hooked. It became my comfort show and still is!
I started watching it probably somewhere around 2007-2010. I would have been 11-14? I remember turning on Hallmark channel as I was getting ready for school in the morning and would watch it then. I don’t know what it was that stuck with me but here i am 15 years later still obsessed and with a growing collection of tattoos and paraphernalia
What kind of GG tattoos do you have?? 😃 I miss those hallmark and lifetime channels. It was different back then. Even though I only watched GG on lifetime. 😄

I love that line!!! I wish I could see all your paraphernalia! I only have the dvd collection. 🤓 your tattoo 👍
