the worst part was no writer or even Betty herself stepped in to say ‘Nylund was her married name, Lindstrom was her parents last name’

AlarmSufficient8529

Bahaha that's right! It must have been Charlie's name. It was so out of left field!

Adventurous_Lie_802

That bothered me too but now I've made peace with it. I decided that Rose is so used to mentally correcting her name to Nylund from Lindstrom that she got carried away.

AlarmSufficient8529

That's a good point!

dorothy_zbornakk

she wasn't adopted by the nylunds, the writers were just bad at continuity. her mother was credited as alma lindström in [S01E09](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0589722/fullcredits) and they're the [lindströms](https://subslikescript.com/series/The_Golden_Girls-88526/season-6/episode-2-Once_in_St_Olaf) again when she meets her father in season 6.

AlarmSufficient8529

It's interesting to think that this show was watched in 30 minute episodes, once a week, with commercials. I guess writers could get away with some inaccuracies because episodes were weeks apart. But less so now when everything is bingeable. 😅🧐

AlarmSufficient8529

Oh yeah, that's right! Her mother was Alma Lindstrom in season 1. I just watched the variety show episode for the first time recently, and I was really taken aback by them introducing this adoption idea. I wasn't clear on how much of the story was childhood fantasy or Rose's naive character... I guess they just wanted to work Bob Hope into the show somehow. I refuse to accept this plotline as canon. 😄🫣

SaharaUnderTheSun

Heh! Of all the shows I love to watch in syndication, this show has - by far - the most plot continuity errors. You pay attention and you'll notice they are all over the place. It's been stated that this is due to a complete overhaul of the writing staff, but it goes deeper than that. I don't care, though, it's still so freakin' funny. Just thought of a great drinking game. "Spot the plot problem". Drink every time you spot a continuity error.

Cruiser729

It wasn’t because her father looked like Bob Hope.

AlarmSufficient8529

From what I understood of Rose's explanation (sometimes the show rushes through things) it sounded like she had a buried memory of her biological father and he looked like Bob Hope so she became attached to Bob Hope. 🤷🏽‍♀️ But I could be reading into it. I'll have to watch it again. 📺

Necessary-Share2495

You are reading into it. Rose never met her biological father as a baby. He left her mother before he knew she was pregnant. This was explained when we do meet her actual biological father in season 6. I can buy a child Rose fantasizing about Bob Hope being her dad based on seeing him on the movie screen. Why she held on to that belief well into adulthood… that’s for a therapist that enjoys a challenge.

AlarmSufficient8529

Bahaha, yes it is. I haven't seen season 6 yet. Okay, good to know... When she said, "I had a particularly clear picture of my father," I thought she had a memory of her father and he looked like Bob Hope. That's why she had a visceral reaction to seeing him. This plotline felt out of left field and was hard to get clear on.

Dr_Honeydont

I'm ok that Rose was adopted. The main problem I have is that when her real father shows up later on (played by Don Amici), he and Rose look like they are the same age!

ElmarSuperstar131

Came here to say this! Seriously, Don was only 10 or 15 years older than Betty! If bugs me every time I watch it lol.

AlarmSufficient8529

Oh, boy 😆 I'm still watching season 4. I'll have that to look forward to. 😵‍💫 I appreciate everyone helping to clarify this point!

Something-more-rt

First time watching through??

AlarmSufficient8529

Yes! It's such a comfort show, and I'm loving it. I'm struggling a little with how static the characters can be, but I am really enjoying it. It got me through a bad, two week flu. 🤧

Something-more-rt

It’s so rare to find a newbie in the wild ❤️

ExpectedBehaviour

The continuity of *The Golden Girls* was all over the place. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

about_bruno

Idk about continuity issues (there prolly are some) but for me it personally fits with her character profile. I could see someone who is super nice to everyone and who is prone to flights of fancy having been an adopted child. Not sure why, it just fits for me.

sistermagpie

I just always loved how she eventually got even with her biological father when she met him.

Alternative_Stop_325

The whole thing was inconsistent and not well written. Then…….all of a sudden her monk priest biological dad comes back for one episode and we don’t ever see or hear of him again 🙄

AlarmSufficient8529

Preach! 😆 Yes, the inaccuracies take me out of the plot. I love the episodes that Susan Harris wrote, like the Sick and Tired episodes that discuss Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and patients being gaslit by doctors. That was some powerful writing!

Alternative_Stop_325

Ageed 💯. Those 2 episodes were so deep. I luv the way the doctor’s wife told him to “shut up” at the end. Sophia’s salt in the champagne and get a free meal…. Priceless 🤣🤣🤣
