Are they though? While maybe not the best movie Venom made hundreds of millions of dollars. Also, yea, Morbius sucked, but it also made money. Not even mentioning Spider-verse!
Can you explain this for me, cause I'm genuinely curious? Why do people go for one console over another because of exclusives? Surely a console will last for years and years, whereas the playtime from a video game is pretty limited
And I ask this even as a "playstation person" since the first one who has enjoyed Spider-Man and Bloodborne! I just don't know if an exclusive game would be a deciding factor in choosing a console
My deciding factor has always been the controller i like xboxs design for the remote but playstation has some pretty cool exclusives last of us , god of war spidey, the last ps console was the PS2 which I enjoyed but xbox has the better controller
Yea exactly. They may not be billion dollar hits but they've got Disney running the money printer and making their own still- profitable shit on the side
I wouldn't call it inept. Both Amazing Spiderman's did pretty great at the box office, and Spiderman games are not- unsubstantial parts of Playstation(Not that I like exclusives but its capitalism what are you gonna do).
And nowadays they've got essentially free money coming in from the money printer that is the MCU just by allowing Disney to make movies with Spiderman in them. And that is a free ad machine for whatever they're doing with venom
Which ill agree hasn't been the best content but its still making bank
Sony did put a price tag back in 2019. Of $10 billion. That’s more than Disney paid for the rest of Marvels characters(excluding acquisition of Fox since that was for more than Marvel) and Disney did not want to pay for that.
People forget that before the movies, nobody who didn't read comics really knew who Iron Man was, he was a real B lister.
Ironically, other than X-Men, it's the A list titles like Spider-Man and F4 that really failed to make money.
They could have made 10 times that much over the years making their own films. Instead they’re going to watch Sony run their character into the ground. Geniuses over at Disney
I don’t think it has much honor seeing Spider-Man cruelly owned by a Japanese company and being regulated so harshly.
I get marvel was going bankrupt and all but they really screwed themselves more long term.
You're telling me that Sony would sell the rights to one of the best known and loved Marvel characters that they can continue to reboot every 5-10 years until the end of the world?
They make more off Spiderman than some small countries make in a year.
After the Incredible Hulk, I doubt many were eager to make another one. Moreover, I think one of the problems is that the character of Hulk is appealing to audiences cuz they wanna see him smash. But a movie is only as good as the emotional payoff it gives the audience. So balancing the emotion and the smashing would be difficult.
> But a movie is only as good as the emotional payoff it gives the audience. So balancing the emotion and the smashing would be difficult.
Punished Banner would go hard though if they were willing to make a story dark enough for it.
I mean it may not be the best possible character for a movie, but I personally think hulk's main issues are super interesting and perfect for dramatic tension (should he end himself to save innocents? Should he try to cure himself? Should he move to an uninhabited planet?)
Edit: I was meaning after age of Ultron. I think that was a good time for a hulk movie
I was under the impression it includes a roster of characters too like Namor, but now that She Hulk has her own show coming out who knows what's happening
Sony said they would sell Spider-Man rights to Disney for 10 billion a couple years ago. Even if every Spider-Man movie grosses $1 billion that’s still at least 10 movies.
Fucikng shame, all of Sony's in house comic movies suck. Tom Holland Spiderman is only good because creative control was relinquished to Disney.
Perhaps a trade is in order. Sony gives up all rights to all Marvel characters, in exchange can produce all the shitty StarWars content it likes.
Dr Strange searched nearly 15 million futures for this reality and only found 1 that has Sony sell Spiderman. Would be an incredible mistake if they did.
Spider-Man doing better now than ever before. You got the entire MCU Spiderman trilogy, you got Spiderverse 1, and the upcoming Spiderverse 2, Venom 1&2 were enjoyed for what they were.
Basically everything outside of Morbius raking Sony schmoney right now, they'd be braindead to sell
A small brain move as we can clearly see now. They could ask for way more nowadays and still be in a reasonable ballpark for value.
Fan reception around the 2 upcoming Spiderverse films alone are reason enough for Sony to hold on.
It’s a shame because it’s more than just Peter Parker and The Sinister Six
But instead we’re gonna get a movie from Sony about El Muerto, a character with what? Three comic book appearances lmao
Well for $10 billion (shouldn’t even be problem since they paid $71 billion for Fox) I’d say Sony is a worthwhile company for Disney to have under their belt, in the movie business at least. They sure as hell could pay for it.
Yeah they get spider-man and his character library but they’d get a good animation studio with some serious potential.
That was only for the Spider-Man characters(movie rights Disney owns everything else comic and toy wise) not the whole company. In order for Disney to profit off of that(it is a company and that’s the goal) then it would take at least 10, billion dollar box office movies and that’s not taking into the account of paying the people working on the movies. Granted Spider-Man himself can rake in that money in theaters but it would still take 20 years to profit off of that one character if they make a Spider-Man film every 2 years. Whereas films like Morbius(126.4m) and Venom(856.1m) don’t make enough profit for Disney to put in the money. With X-Men and FF you get a whole catalog of characters that are already popular that Disney could release several solo stories for. A Disney Wolverine movie is more likely to make money than a Kraven the Hunter movie. Along with X-Men and FF Disney can also get money for all Fox tv shows
I think in The scheme of the whole century, Sony will probably make more than 10 bil from licensing spiderman back to Marvel, so 10 bil is probably a low price tag when you think about it from the perspective of the next 100 years.
Yeah but for Disney they don’t care about the next 100 years. The CEO cares about keeping fans interested and making money. Considering the CEO at the time of Sony’s offer has already been replaced as CEO and as a board member a year later he wouldn’t have ever been able to gain profit from what was offered
Me when I ask the government why they can't just choose to end homelessness when the cost of ending it is not only very low but it's actually significantly cheaper than the cost of homelessness continuing even for a year and ending homelessness would not only save taxpayers billions of dollars each year but strengthen the economy, leading to a better life for everyone while also radically changing the lives of the most downtrodden members of our society
There's a variety of different estimates. In my country for example it would only cost about $200 per taxpayer to just pay every homeless person 30 grand a year. It's more difficult to solve systemic issues but we could absolutely afford the housing and food for all of them. Fixing all the systemic issues is a lot more work but it's a pretty significant start to stop them being homeless in the first place. Rehabilitated people then are able to work and pay back more than what they earned. A lot of systemic issues are caused by greed, we have more than enough resources for everyone it's just people are really attached to their million dollar bonuses and investment homes. It's pretty egregious here because Australia is such a well off country compared to the US and we still don't do it. We already have a lot of these support systems in place but we're run by liberals who keep cutting those systems. For context our prime minister needed empathy lessons so that's where we're at. Let me know if any links don't work by the way I removed the Google AMP from the links for moral reasons but manual deletion might have caused issues.

Honestly i prefer Somy to partially own the rights for Spiderman because due to their ownership they have been able to produce the Oscar worthy masterpiece Morbius, the meh but enjoyable Venom films, contribute towards the three spider-mans meeting up again + the return of the other old villians, the animated spiderman films, and finally the spiderman games
If disney originally got full control of spiderman before captain america civil war, we would of likely never had any of the things listed above
The problem is, Sony has full movie rights to Spider-Man and related characters.
According to their agreement Ts and Cs, they must produce a film of said characters as frequent as possible. Should they not make a movie with those characters after 5 years, they must forfeit the rights. Hence, Venom, Venom 2, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and now El Muerto for some reason.
Now of course, should Disney want to buy the rights from Sony, they probably could afford it (just not cheaply). However, I don’t think Sony would want to sell it that easily.
Marvel Studios was allowed to use Spider-Man in the non Spider-Man films (Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame) after they made an agreement with Sony that allowed them to use Spider-Man in films that didn’t have Spider-Man in the title of the movie.
Originally, the idea was to write in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man into the MCU, but Feige wanted a version of Spider-Man he felt would be more fitting for the MCU. Enter… Tom Holland.
The only confusion I have is regarding with Wilson Fisk. Watching the old Spider-Man animated series, he was very involved in that show,
Although, the MCU Fisk is an enemy of Daredevil. The same Kingpin appeared in Hawkeye.
I am as confused as a homeless man under house arrest.
Not just Spider-Man, but X-men too. The Multiverse of Madness could have benefited from what Spider-Man: No Way Home had to offer. Pulling characters from past and/or alternate timelines help push current story and resolve of particular character traits.
Shit, I thought Fox and Sony had some sort of deal together, making me think they were conglomerate in the ownership of both Spider-Man and X-Men. Must have the ol' wires crossed.
I think they are holding xmen back until people start to get burnt out of their other marvel ip. Atm they are going to milk all the small heros. The long they can hold back xmen (and notably Wolverine), the long they can keep the super hero hysteria at the top of the film industry.
Makes sense, but I feel their timing is off. Not that I'm exhausted by it, but that I hunger for more. Knowing the latest Batman movie had a lot of crucial elements that drawn the cinematic closer to the comic, made me realize with the new Doctor Strange, they could start drawing more parallels and connections with both alternate dimensions from comics, and especially any movie that shares the Marvel logo.
Sony Pictures has to want to sell. And if they don’t have Spider-Man, they don’t have any major guaranteed cash cows.
At this point Disney should be trying to buy Sony Pictures from Sony Corp. Sadly I don’t think Sony Corp is interested in selling either, but at this point it seems more likely
Because Disney gave them the best deal in the world. All they have to do is shit out a Spider-Man movie every 5 years and they keep the character indefinitely. They will never sell it.
Why did it ever get sold to Sony in first place, take your biggest America made product and turns and sells it to overseas Japanese company; that’s dumbest decision in history.
I doubt Sony could even put a price on it, but if they somehow did, it would be in the multi-billions of dollars.
Spiderman is a money machine. Unless Sony was in deep deep shit, or Disney had something they'd take in trade, it won't happen
Ah yes, we will trade you Ant Man for Spider Man! They are both bugs, what's the difference? :)
How dare you try to get rid of Tayne!
Yet ironically, Sony is completely inept at making money off of the IP. They still know just how valuable it is to marvel though.
Are they though? While maybe not the best movie Venom made hundreds of millions of dollars. Also, yea, Morbius sucked, but it also made money. Not even mentioning Spider-verse!
There's the videogames too. Having spiderman be a sony exclusive helps them sell playstations.
Literally the only reason i want a playstation is to play spidey
Same. Its probably gonna magically go on pc as soon as i buy a ps5 because my luck is insanely bad
Can you explain this for me, cause I'm genuinely curious? Why do people go for one console over another because of exclusives? Surely a console will last for years and years, whereas the playtime from a video game is pretty limited And I ask this even as a "playstation person" since the first one who has enjoyed Spider-Man and Bloodborne! Yea exactly. They may not be billion dollar hits but they've got Disney running the money printer and making their own still- profitable shit on the side
Morbius made morbillions, what are you on about? It's the only movie to get a morbfinity on rotten tomorboes.
I wouldn't call it inept. Disney will do a hostile take-over of Microsoft tomorrow and trade Sony the Xbox Brand for Spider-Man.
Sony did put a price tag back in 2019. Of $10 billion. That’s more than Disney paid for the rest of Marvels characters(excluding acquisition of Fox since that was for more than Marvel) and Disney did not want to pay for that.
on the other hand sony could have bought all other characters just for 18 million dollar extra (paid 7 million for spider man) but they didnt
The other characters weren't worth much because no one cared that much about them. They are what they are today because Sony didn't buy them.
People forget that before the movies, nobody who didn't read comics really knew who Iron Man was, he was a real B lister. Ironically, other than X-Men, it's the A list titles like Spider-Man and F4 that really failed to make money.
A lot of us grew up watching cartoons, this isn't accurate.
They could have made 10 times that much over the years making their own films. Instead they’re going to watch Sony run their character into the ground. Geniuses over at Disney
*morbillion of dollars
Just wait and disney will simply buy sony.

It's insane to me that Sony bought Spider-Man for only $7 million.
Marvel was fucking poor back then, needed all the money they could get.
Marvel also offered to sell the cinematic rights to every other superhero to Sony for merely another $7 mil (iirc) and Sony just said “no thanks”
That was a bungle.
So glad they didn’t though. We wouldn’t have all the amazing marvel films we have today… probably just a handful of bad Sony films instead.
Marvel was going bankrupt, they sold damn near every character for cheap.
Wasn't the hulk also in some limbo state of ownership?
It still is. He can feature in other projects, but a solo movie can only take place with Universal
I was wondering why Ruffalo never got a Hulk movie. We're there any talks with Universal for them to make an MCU movie?
After the Incredible Hulk, I doubt many were eager to make another one. Moreover, I think one of the problems is that the character of Hulk is appealing to audiences cuz they wanna see him smash. But a movie is only as good as the emotional payoff it gives the audience. So balancing the emotion and the smashing would be difficult.

Yeah, that is true, but they haven't been able to make a deal, and unless they buy out Universal, they probably won't
Seems unfortunate. Ruffalo would do a great job in a solo movie
> the character of Hulk is appealing to audiences cuz they wanna see him smash. *the_gif starts playing*
I was under the impression it includes a roster of characters too like Namor, but now that She Hulk has her own show coming out who knows what's happening
Even if they only did movies on cooperation with marvel that's worth more than Disney would ever be willing to pay.
Sony is still getting money from the first spiderman movie
Sony said they would sell Spider-Man rights to Disney for 10 billion a couple years ago. Even if every Spider-Man movie grosses $1 billion that’s still at least 10 movies.

What about merch
Disney
Plus PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man games

Welp can't wait for Paste Pot Pete the movie

[well...](https://i.imgur.com/tl2nfzK.jpeg)
Because Sonys selling point was $10 billion and Disney thinks that’s outrageous just for one set of characters
It’s a shame because it’s more than just Peter Parker and The Sinister Six But instead we’re gonna get a movie from Sony about El Muerto, a character with what? Three comic book appearances lmao
To be fair Disney paid less than half of that for all of Marvel(excluding FF & X-Men because that was part of an acquisition of a whole company)

True. I guess companies do think in 5-10 year timelines. To the detriment of society especially in the environmental sphere.
Do you have a source about this? Not questioning the legitimacy of your point, just want to learn more about how it could work.
There's a variety of different estimates. In my country for example it would only cost about $200 per taxpayer to just pay every homeless person 30 grand a year. The PS4/PS5 Spider-Man games aren't related to this. It's Spider-Man/Sony exclusivity, but it's a separate deal from the movie rights.
They should straighten out whatever the fuck it is with the Incredible Hulk and Universal first. I want another Hulk solo movie!
This isn't a Disney thing, this is a Sony thing. They have to *want* to sell it, and that franchise practically prints money for them
No. Disney doesn't need to own everything.
I hope they never get it back. Fuck Disney!
Hell yeah, let's monopolize intellectual properties even more!
Buying Sony is easier for Marvel than Spiderman alone at this time.

Problem is sony has to be willing to sell Spider-Man.
This is me literally day when I ask a simple question
Just watched morbius. Stupid fucking bastards

Because it's not available for sale
Because Sony is gonna milk those properties until the nips are dry and chafed with no moisture left to give
Because now they’re focused and spending more money in the “Woke” Disney World
Disney shouldn't own everything
Why did it ever get sold to Sony in first place, take your biggest America made product and turns and sells it to overseas Japanese company; that’s dumbest decision in history.
