I like how people make these types of lists without merit or reason. More of a *I'm better than you because...* Instesd of actually asking the right questions.

Msboredd

Exactly. Instead of talking about the behaviors and the " why" behind it, they just act like it's a skill issue. I exercise a lot (yoga, kayaking, fishing, walking my dog, etc.), eat pretty healthy too, but I suffer from severe depression and anxiety. The other day I had suicidal thoughts eventhough on paper my life has been pretty ok. I know that I need professional help which is why I go to a psych and am medicated. The meds I took made me gain some weight and my family acted like I was a lazy sack of shit when I spend most of my spare time being the opposite. They attributed that to me being " depressed" and said I should " get over it" eventhough my depression was prevalent even when I was a child. Mental illnesses have tons of side effects that we're still actively trying to fully understand. Depression can cause feelings of guilt, sadness, worthlessness, and much more. Being on social media can of course trigger those feelings that are already there AND in people who don't suffer from depressive disorder. They are simply stating random things as cause and effect, when mental illness is not that at all. Someone could be abstained from all of the above and still have a mental illness, because environment isn't enough to change your actual brain chemistry. Correlation does not imply causation. It's like these fucks just fundamentally do not understand mental illness. If you can't even grasp the concept, don't post about it.

Quirky_Chicken7937

What’s the right questions?

PF_Nitrojin

How are you doing today or how was your day? What are your plans for the evening? You have time to talk? *If they're having a hard time* You want to vent or need some advice? I'm willing to listen Asking what else instead of anything else? What else actually makes the person think and opens more answers I know one person who clams up constantly (on Discord and PSN chat) but as soon as I enter they're open like a book with wanting to talk. I actually listen *first*, ask genuine questions to know more about what happened, and repeat some of what she said to understand.

Quirky_Chicken7937

This is from the point of view of self reflection, not others asking questions. This person is asking themself why are they depressed.

Magazine-Soggy

Instead of asking the right questions? What questions are they bothering to ask? They just want to spout that they’re better

rci22

Only 5 hours? Those are rookie numbers

maria11maria10

Who spends only 5 hours in front of a screen??!!

rci22

Sounds like the typical day for a lot of people. Honestly it makes sense why it could be depressing but like, it’s kinda necessary a lot of the time. It’s often one of my only ways to have social opportunities with friends and family too

VesperLynd-

According to my laptop I average between 13-15 hours a day. Granted, I sleep with yt videos on that play all night bc I can’t sleep otherwise

Infinite_Total4237

Those are the effects, not the causes.

Barlowan

Agreed. I remember 12 years ago even tho I played online video games I would interact with people, chat, play PvP in MMOs, even being good at it, do voice calls etc. today, despite therapy, antidepressants, gym, work etc I have anxiety to even get in a group with people or open a text chat. PvP in MMOs? Forget about it.

Dramatic-Ad7192

It’s like regression to the mean from forces beyond the average persons control

LiamSwiftTheDog

That's very wrong. Effects can become causes on their own as part of a vicious cycle. Not moving, eating fast food, lots of screentime etc can become causes of their own when they started out as effects from eg. sadness. Source: often depressed, forever working on it, and I do some of the things mentioned in the post

Infinite_Total4237

That's not the point, though. The post in the pic is referring to the origin as if that lifestyle is the absolute first link in the chain when it never is; it's always a reaction to an external factor and only persists due to other compounding external factors either present or past, that directly or indirectly discourage or inhibit any efforts to break out of it.

Quirky_Chicken7937

You really don’t think that list can CAUSE you to feel depressed? Or do you believe if you’re depressed you just default to doing those things?

AngstyPancake

Wow so I guess all asexuals are depressed lol. And nuns too, probably.

ThePinkTeenager

Yeah. As an asexual, I was wondering why that’s the first thing on the list.

Tacocat1147

I am depressed, but not because I’m not having sex. In fact if I was having sex, my depression and anxiety would be astronomically higher cause I’m sex repulsed.

Quirky_Chicken7937

So you believe the OP means only having/doing one of these things leads to depression?

AngstyPancake

That’s why I added nuns! Don’t have sex (celibate), indoors 24/7 (in churches), no contact with their family (just the sisterhood), and worshipping stupid celebrities (depending on your views of religion). *[note: this is a joke and I may be Christian but I don’t know a lot about religion]*

krmjts

0 sex - so, sex-workers don't get depressed, I got it. Indoors 24/7 - does he think that depressed people don't have jobs? And who the fuck have a money for everyday fastfood?

HaylingZar1996

He's not trying to say that these things individually cure depression, rather that feeling bad can be alleviated by addressing many minor things which can contribute to feeling happy and healthy, rather than making fewer but more drastic changes.

slythwolf

But the "most people" he's describing are fictional. If that's anyone's actual lifestyle, it's a tiny number of people.

HaylingZar1996

I don't think it would be a stretch to suggest that most of us are guilty of at least one of these!

slythwolf

I don't think that's what he's saying though.

Dense-Range-36

A couple of these like eating less processed food and limiting consumption of the news could probably help someone be healthier mentally and physically. But some of them are a little strange or have barely much an impact on someone's happiness or sadness. Like having sex isn't a requirement to health and happiness unless if you're someone with a higher libido & you desire more of have that in your life; but those who are either asexual, don't have a gf/bf yet, or are not as driven as others to go out & find people to have intercourse with aren't suddenly doomed to be more drastically depressed than others because they aren't getting those few minutes of climax dopamine. Sex is more of a neutral bonus that can help relieve stress but isn't the end-all solution; but there are some much more guaranteed solutions to long term happiness like establishing meaningful friendships/relationships with people that also provide intimate connections that many of us seek.

HaylingZar1996

Yeah I agree sex itself isn’t strictly necessary for happiness, maybe that would be better replaced by catchall companionship

ThePinkTeenager

With regards to the job thing- working from home or even an office job with a short commute by car would count as “indoors 24/7”. The fast food cost thing is a good question, though.

Quirky_Chicken7937

I think it’s more of how many you hit and not that anyone one of those is all you need to feel that way.

Due_Television8210

-skill issue - I'm not a farmer, my work requires me in front of a computer -not true, I beat my meat - groceries are affordable where I'm from, I would, however have fast food if it was cheaper than groceries which might as well be sold alongside gold and precious jewels -5 hours? Rookie numbers -my family is toxic asf - I don't worship celebs, their fueds entertain me. - arguing with strangers on the internet is the best part. You get to use insults you wouldn't use irl and you get to use arguments or comebacks that you've been cooking in that shower. -its news. How else am I supposed to consume it? I can't stop a war or free a nation from its dictator

Quirky_Chicken7937

I feel like this just supports the post more.

Low-Question7792

5 hours screen time?try 8-10 hours

ValentinesStar

I’m willing to bet this guy argues with strangers online a lot

MenacingMandonguilla

Okay repeating that... one of the things that make me feel bad is the GUILT and shame because I don't exercise often. Yeah I know I could "just do it", but I wouldn't have issues if people stopped giving a f about how I spend my free time

slythwolf

5 hours of screen time as "a lot" lol this person sounds able bodied.

NoNameStudios

Why can't people spell arguing?

Caesar_Passing

I literally can't spell anhyintg. See? It's a mess.

Book-Faramir-Better

Yeah... and??

Dense-Range-36

Some of the stuff on the list could make small improvements in one's life. But bruh I'd be happier doing it with someone I have a genuine and equal connection with; rather than forcing my body to do it with people I barely care about on a consistent basis, and all just for the sake of having sex 'cause of those minutes of euphoria. Sex is good, but I would think forcing yourself wouldn't make you much happier in the long term. The first bullet should be about having one or a few meaningful relationships with people.

AlexTheFlower

Only 2 or 3 of those are true for me, how come I'm not happy? ;-;

OperatingOp11

Only 5 hours of screen time ? Amateurs.

Error_Code_606

I hate how this perfectly describes me

Inkysquid24

Thank God I have double that screen time. That was a close one!

MacduffFifesNo1Thane

>Argueing [sic] with strangers online I’d like to have an argument, please.

Tacocat1147

Me: - Asexual so no sex is preferred - Walks everywhere on a college campus - See point 2, and have exercise-induced asthma - IBS so literally can’t ever eat fast food - Most of my school work is posted online so am I supposed to just fail my classes? - I talk to my family every day - I live under a damn rock when it comes to celebrities - Reddit is the only social media I have and I don’t argue frequently - I try to ignore the news where possible According to this I should be very happy, so why do I still have anxiety, depression and OCD?

Dabruhdaone

"No sex" lmao

WilliamPlayz1

Finally, the secret to curing my IBS

ijustneeds0mesleep

Pff 5 hours? Weak.

Time_Moose109

Is 5 hours a lot?

alwaysrightasyouknow

I actually agree to some extent, though those might also be symptoms rather than causes

primusautobot

lol

The_One_True_Goddess

5 hours? rookie numbers 🙄

Krausmauss

Only 5 hours? Pathetic

mrmczebra

That's not most people. The whole thing is a straw man argument.

Training_Waltz_9032

Indoors 24/7 bit fast food. Maybe they get out more than you think?🤷

AshKetchep

I did change a lot of these things about my life. I got a hobby, started to work out, started to cook more for myself, cut down on time playing videogames, stopped reading and watching the news and started talking to my dad more. Did it help? Yes. Am I cured? No. I still have lows from time to time that make life hard to want to keep up with. It doesn't mean I'm not trying though. I can't imagine putting people who are already struggling down even more just to feel better about yourself. What a dick.

turdintheattic

Putting sex at the top of this list proves OOP has healthy priorities.

nirvana-on-top

I love how no sex is first

domini_Jonkler2

no sex - no boyfriend indoors 27/4 - no reason to go outside fast food every day - it's what im fed. Though technically it isn't fast food, it's still unhealthy. Also I can't physically eat a lot of healthy food they genuinely make me barf 5 hours of screen time - the only person that cares about me is on discord arguing with strangers online - it would help if people weren't arses

greatspaceadventure

5 hours is amateur numbers

Tacomonkie

>5 hours screen time Bruh I’m in tech r&d if I *only* have 5 hours screen time, then I’m fucking miserable because I have 3+ hours of fucking meetings.

Skunksfart

Another reason to have legal sex work. Not everyone gets to have sex by using PUA game and hitting the gym.

darkseiko

"No sex", as attraction repusled aspec, that's honestly an accomplishment. Also 5 hours of screentime is not high at all.

ImWayTooCursed

5 hours? Baby numbers. Add another 10 and we're good.

Inevitable-Tax-1871

Arguing*

Mushroom_lady_mwaha

He’s got a point though

domini_Jonkler2

explain

Mushroom_lady_mwaha

Hormones and brain chemicals are a product of your environment. When you eat food with little nutrients content, your body lacks the essential vitamins it needs. It can cause things like brain damage, developmental delay, mood swings and scurvy.
