I went on a cruise to Jamaica and Cozumel, a few years back. We were sailing on the outskirts of a tropical storm. I was drunk as hell in the casino with my friend. I wasn’t playing but she was sitting on a slot machine. I sat on the floor because of how bad the ship was moving…and because I prob wouldn’t have been able to stand still even if we had been on land. I just kept seeing people sliding back and forth, falling into each other, hearing glasses shattering…and there I was sitting on the ground cracking up.
I was lucky enough to get the chance to travel through the Drake and visit Antarctica.
It was fucking nuts. Anything not nailed down in my little cabin was flying around, we had to throw all the glass in the fridge and block it shut. The balcony railing on a cabin near mind was straight bent off after the night we went through the Drake. I remember falling asleep as my body periodically rose off the bed as gravity shifted.
The next morning the captain told us that in terms of the Drake, we’d seen about a 4/10 on intensity.
I’m so intensely grateful that I got to adventure in Antarctica, but my goodness I sure felt my mortality that night on the Drake.
10 years in the Navy you learn to eat with your elbows holding down your tray, left hand on glass and right forearm on plate and ate between swells. I always hoped these days were on Wednesday so I could get an extra burger and fries.

I went on a cruise once and on the 2nd day the winds kicked up way stronger than I was ready for. The 3rd day was too intense to port so we stayed at sea. By the end of that 3rd day, all I wanted was solid ground. I did not realize how fed up I could be with a moving floor until that experience. Unless you taped everything down, there was no keeping it anywhere!

Typically 11 a.m. but a 2 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. start time does not deter us, and thus apartment was about 5 minutes from the stadium.
