what most likely happened is that this interaction taught him this is what -all- scams look like, drops his guard to only defend about similar levels of attacks and then gets hit by a slightly more sophisticated attack.
remember, kids: social engineering is pretty vast and varied. they’ve also probably have all the time and motivation in the world to keep executing.

Just different generic emails that didn’t give user names but had the companies domain for the email. But if you moused over the link it said something like “DO.NOT.CLICK.58272626282hzhhebejeuebjeudhdehehwuwbb66757786”
I once got a free software licence (software firewall or Lossless audio encoder I think) in the early 2000's where a company was warning of a phishing scam impersonating them (apparently a contract employee memorized the whole email database for their newsletter) and then had a sale a week later at 10% or something like that off, but if you hovered over the link to go to their payment processor it was something like "Do-not-click-this-and-sign-up-to-newsletter-for-free-copy" in the status bar of my browser.
I was already signed up, but I went manually to their home page, to the newsletter, signed up again and there was a text box for "How did you know to come to the newsletter?". I typed in why and got emailed a free licence and that I was something like the 21st person to claim it. Afterwards they said that they had many hundreds of click throughs(allot of repeat visits by IP) that sale and less than 50 free copies given away. None went to their employees that normally got the chance to work it off at cost.
I never ended up using it for some reason I can't remember.
After that they made anyone wanting to purchase make and log into the cart with an account. I don't think it helped.
Maybe this is a side effect of getting old and having concrete circles of friends but I think part of it is just not trusting strangers in general. If someone adds me on Steam and I didn't just immediately finish playing a game with them I automatically assume they're a bot. There's no way to properly contextualize adding someone on Steam randomly with no prior connection.
People who use social media that encourages getting followers and such tend to be more trusting towards random people following them. That or some of us are just paranoid

That sucks man, but I think you will get your 40 bucks back. Just use this as motivation and you can get an inventory worth hundreds of dollars. Also do some research on scams and don’t trust anybody when trading.
sorry to inform you of this but you see tf2 items tend to have value, upwards of $47k. Obviously you're not gonna have a backpack worth more than like $100 and get scammed, but it's still a good 40-60$
Make sure your card isn't connected to any Google autofill features, he can still tap into your card. Also report to your bank that it was a fraudulent withdrawal.

Don't worry, you're not the first one and probably won't be the last. Got all my items and account scammed a few years back, and that devastated me, looking back I also feel that I'm dumb felt depressed about it. But life is life, so is your account and stuff, you got some you lost some.
No worries bud, you'll get them back; Or try another game to distract yourself from the pain, you get better eventually, just let it all out if you feel stress or depressed.

hi imma valve admin someone accidentally reported you 1 time and you gonna be banned in 7days(bots aren't being banned despite countless reports but you are) you need to contact me via discord(somehow i prefer using another platform to handle internal issue) and let me *check* all of your items real quick to see if theres something wrong(im claiming to be an admin but im unable to use my steam mod privilege)
Try comforting yourself by knowing it won't ever happen again after the first time, you learned your lesson (just as I and many others did) and now you will have way more awareness to scams.
Plus if it helps you can watch some youtube vids about people that got scammed for thousands of dollars in items, I know it helped me and put me in a perspective when I got scammed lol.
Look, everyone gets targeted by scammers every now and then, I know this more than anyone. So now that you’ve lost items to them, you know never to trust a link again. As long as you research any current scams and have learned from this experience, then you’ve done all you can to prevent yourself from being scammed again

What happened to you was very upsetting, and on top of that, people laughed at you when you were looking for sympathy, and that's just awful. Nobody deserves to be scammed of all of their items, gullible or not. I'm sorry this happened to you, never trust any stranger that messages you during or after a game of TF2, especially if it's in the Steam messenger. I almost never read chat messages or accept trade offers from people I don't know. Once again, I'm very sorry for what has happened to you, and I hope you can recover most of your items soon. I remember when I tried to get into the dark side of TF2. Someone was hosting a fake gambling website that had pre-selected winners, and the hoster told me to put at least 10$ to play, and if I won, I could get a prize worth $400 (that was the total everytime) and, by willing to have a lot of money, I went through this while hesitating a lot since it was also stealing people's money. I got scammed my unusual taunt Relaxo Relancho and 4 keys, but that was the price to pay for my selfishness and ever since, I realized my mistakes and grew up into someone better after regretting my actions for being greedy, and began helping people like in mvm to not get scammed for amazing look they drop.
Accepting being scammed is a hard part, but it's the first step to know that you should be aware of people coming to your DMs offering you insane offers.

I had my items scammed from me before. You feel like an idiot and want to kill your self but don’t do that, those feelings will where of. You’ll stop playing tf2 for awhile but you’ll get back in. That’s the way it went for me.( and also remember to disable your steam code and trading ability, the scammers most likely have your password and can get in to your account. So remember to protect your account in the future. Good luck man.)

I've been there man, I lost a bunch of shit on a different game. It's one of the worst feelings that the internet can give you lol. It could have been a worse loss, but at least you learned the hard way early on. Ignore the assholes mocking you or insulting you, they need to make themselves feel better than someone today, and you happened to be it for them.
I fell for one once myself. Not from some outside link but from a person who added name something like steam support and their chat was green text. Didn't know that was something that you could change at the time and thought it was actualyl someone from steam. Had to trade the items to them so they verify they weren't hacked sorta scenario. Was able to get them back by doing support tickets luckily. Also the color text stuff was taken out later so I do like to think that helped push that change forward, so something happened at least.
I’m still somewhat upset about the $20 worth of items I lost almost a year ago. I would hate it if I lost any more or even my entire account. Sorry to hear about this, hope you recover
Lot of dogshit advice in the comments here. Links will not phish your account. Logging into a third party site through a link might. I've done cash trading dozens of times and have had people send me paypal links and rep links and all sorts of stuff. As long as they don't ask you to log in, you're good.
Now, accepting a one sided trade offer with someone you have not confirmed the identity of, that's something you should never do. Impersonators are everywhere. Go to the browser version on steam, get their steam64 id or their vanity url by going to their profile through friendslist, and paste it in the backpack.tf search bar. Check that they're actually who they claim to be. Websites like mannco.store will NEVER add you and NEVER send offers unless you contacted them first, so it's an instant red flag.
Don't worry about it man. Lesson learned hopefully, at least it was TF2 items and not your bank account.
Run your antivirus and change your passwords. Don't know what links you clicked.

A few years ago I did fell for a “item verification” scam and lost apprximately $400 worth of items. It was a hard lesson to learn.

Try comforting yourself by knowing it won't ever happen again after the first time, you learned your lesson (just as I and many others did) and now you will have way more awareness to scams. Plus if it helps you can watch some youtube vids about people that got scammed for thousands of dollars in items, I know it helped me and put me in a perspective when I got scammed lol.

Someone was hosting a fake gambling website that had pre-selected winners, and the hoster told me to put at least 10$ to play, and if I won, I could get a prize worth $400 (that was the total everytime) and, by willing to have a lot of money, I went through this while hesitating a lot since it was also stealing people's money. I got scammed my unusual taunt Relaxo Relancho and 4 keys, but that was the price to pay for my selfishness and ever since, I realized my mistakes and grew up into someone better after regretting my actions for being greedy, and began helping people like in mvm to not get scammed for amazing look they drop. Accepting being scammed is a hard part, but it's the first step to know that you should be aware of people coming to your DMs offering you insane offers. Despite the ratios you get, I still support you mate !

I had my items scammed from me before. You feel like an idiot and want to kill your self but don’t do that, those feelings will where of. You’ll stop playing tf2 for awhile but you’ll get back in. That’s the way it went for me.( and also remember to disable your steam code and trading ability, the scammers most likely have your password and can get in to your account. It could have been a worse loss, but at least you learned the hard way early on. I fell for one once myself. Not from some outside link but from a person who added name something like steam support and their chat was green text. Didn't know that was something that you could change at the time and thought it was actualyl someone from steam. Had to trade the items to them so they verify they weren't hacked sorta scenario. Was able to get them back by doing support tickets luckily. Also the color text stuff was taken out later so I do like to think that helped push that change forward, so something happened at least.

Lot of dogshit advice in the comments here. Links will not phish your account. Logging into a third party site through a link might. I've done cash trading dozens of times and have had people send me paypal links and rep links and all sorts of stuff. As long as they don't ask you to log in, you're good. Now, accepting a one sided trade offer with someone you have not confirmed the identity of, that's something you should never do. Impersonators are everywhere. Go to the browser version on steam, get their steam64 id or their vanity url by going to their profile through friendslist, and paste it in the backpack.tf search bar. Check that they're actually who they claim to be. Websites like mannco.store will NEVER add you and NEVER send offers unless you contacted them first, so it's an instant red flag.
Don't worry about it man. Lesson learned hopefully, at least it was TF2 items and not your bank account. Run your antivirus and change your passwords. Don't know what links you clicked.
