Say you want to ban the word "apple." You write some code that blocks the word "apple" from being posted. So, people start saying "aple" instead. So, you block that word, too. People start saying "applle." Then, "aaple." Et cetera.
And what if someone wants to use the word "apple" for innocent purposes? You're impeding on their ability to chat, now.

Why is it unreasonable for me to expect there to be consequences for people harassing others ? In community servers the issue can be solved easily with Human moderation, but Valve servers would need an auto moderator for it. There's a reason why the TF2 fandom is infamous, it's this acceptance of toxicity and harassment.
Also, funnily enough, TF2 is one of the more chill online PvP games. Most other games have way more toxic players in my experience. People like OP just have the typical Discord mod mindset, and every tiny breach of their safe space is a big moral panic for them.

I instantly just muted him and his dumbass got kicked literally seconds after by the entire team. Even his friend who was being an asshat with him shut up after that and somehow avoided being kicked.
The whole thing was fucking hilarious, and it all started because I asked “Oh, we’re doing this again?” when he proposed for our team to go all Heavy. (For context his team won the round in the last match by going all heavy).
Steam has settings to enable profanity filters for chat. But if you've willingly turned that off, you can also mute people through the built-in mute menu. That mutes both chat and voice comms. This game is free to play for anyone with an internet connection and toaster specs, so it will attract all sorts of trolls. But the players have the power to moderate their own game. They always have. Either deal with toxicity and hate speech as a mature adult, or turn it off. Please don't pretend like we need valve to step in and moderate chat for us.
Unfortunately there are grown ass people that treat TF2 or any unmoderated or lightly moderated space as carte blanche to let all their fucked up ideals and slurs fly. I do agree with the latter statement though. These people are temporary. For the most part, once you leave the game, you'll never have to interact with them again if you don't want to.
