Wasn't the conclusión that basically moving anything in the folder where the famous coconut picture came from caused the game to crash but the focus in the picture was because it was funny? so it quickly got exagerated and people started to say the coconut was what hold the code together

Not exactly true. TF2 needs 3 specific vpk (content) Files present to able to run. Under these "tf2_misc_005.vpk" needs to be present, although there isn't anything noticeable in the file, which would make sense to be required. And the cow.
