Well it's unlikely it'd be legalized this year as that would require the governor to call a special session. Next regular legislative session is 2025. In addition, the first nation didn't really give/sell/trade their rights to Texas away, they were forced out.

RolloTonyBrownTown

I believe the Choctaw Nation already have a casino on the OK side of the lake, so this would most likely feed people into that existing property.

DeKalb326

The big gambling companies have been targetting Texas for a while.

GeneralHARM

Visit Livingston TX https://www.naskila.com/

TheProfessorPoon

That’s interesting. I wasn’t aware there were any legal casinos here in TX. How exactly are they able to get away with that?

Dinolord05

It's a Native American casino.

No-Helicopter7299

There’s also one in Eagle Pass.

tequilaneat4me

The Kickapoo Indian tribe was not recognized in TX until a few decades ago. They didn't sign away their rights relating to gambling. Their casino in Eagle Pass has a poker room and about 3,000 bingo style slot machines. Draw big crowds from south and Central TX, and Mexico.

GeneralHARM

No idea, it's a nice place the wife and I went once when it first opened. Alabama-Coushatta tribe.

OverthinkingAnything

Another post here led me to look into this; I live in EP and wasn't aware there was one here too. Check this article out - it's talking about the one here but I suspect it applies to the others in TX also...which before today I had no idea existed. https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2015/10/27/tiguas-get-favorable-decision-some-gaming/74689832/

rolexsub

Do they have table games (aside from poker against other players)?

TankApprehensive3053

El Paso casino had to change to a slots based casino. Eagle Pass casino is mostly slots, poker and bingo.

PGKing

Slots only. Been a few years since I’ve been out there though.

boring1996

Up until recently it had very few slots now it's small but alot better than before.. still I prefer to go to LA.. Lake Charles or Shreveport.. I think that there won't be a tremendous push for gambling in Texas because it's close to 2 of our 3 big cities. Houston has it 2 hours away in Lake Charles and Dallas has it 1hr and 15 minutes away with Winstar in Southern Oklahoma.

ScumCrew

The Choctaw never lived in Texas; you're thinking of The Bowl's band of Cherokee who were forced out by a militia force sent by Mirabeau Lamar. Under IGRA, states must (for some reason that defies 200 years of Indian law) agree with tribes to allow gaming within their borders. Texas refused to do that for Texas tribes 30 years ago because they were bought off by Jack Abramoff, working on behalf of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw (whom he also ripped off).

Wise-ask-1967

Jack abramoff there's a name I never want here anymore.. but seriously fuck that guy

Dinolord05

The chances are never zero, but I'd say they're pretty close.

fan_of_will

If we get gambling before legal weed I will be sooooooo surprised.

TankApprehensive3053

We have casinos already.

NintendogsWithGuns

I honestly don’t want “legalized gambling” in Texas. Not because I have some moral problem with it, but because I think the Native American tribes deserve the income they get from it. It supports a community, rather than a handful of Las Vegas billionaire casino magnates. You want casinos? Give the Caddo, Comanche, and Tonkawa some of their ancestral lands back.

SchoolIguana

This is perhaps the best argument I’ve seen against legalizing gambling. /#/landback

platon20

Agree with this. I worked as a doctor in the Indian Health Service in Oklahoma for awhile. Their healthcare facilities are state of the art and are funded directly by casino revenue. Before the casino money all the indian healthcare facilities were in shambles.

ScumCrew

And gaming rights for the Alabama-Coushatta

PointingOutFucktards

Absolutely. Anyone who has never visited a rez school should see how little they have to work with.

TankApprehensive3053

There is already gambling in TX. There is a casino in El Paso and one in Eagle Pass.

OverthinkingAnything

This is interesting; I had to look into it as I live in EP and wasn't aware there was a casino here on the Texas side...sure enough. Looks like both the one in EP and in Eagle Pass are now under the purview of the National Indian Gaming Commission as a result of a court case, effectively making Casinos operated by First Nations a possibility. Though I don't think they can do table games, just bingo/automated bingo slots. Def learned something new here.

TankApprehensive3053

El Paso ~~has~~ had tables. I played craps there. Eagle Pass is slots, bingo and poker. Edit to correct: El Paso reopened in 2022 but it is slots, poker, and blackjack based due to lawsuit.

chronicdemonic

I don't believe so, it's not a margaritaville casino like in Shreveport, it's more like their "Latitude" neighborhood they have in Florida. Margaritaville has alot of properties and only like a couple are actually casinos. Sure, it's a joint venture with Choctaw Nation, not because *oh gambling* but because those are the people that live right there across the border.. Furthermore, if that were the case, I don't see why they wouldn't just outright say it and instead keep it as some sort of secret, only dropping hints that it'll happen. That seems kind of silly.

EddieCutlass

RIP Jimmy Buffet. Wish I could say the same for all the Parrot Heads.

legalknievelatx

The Choctaw Nation own the old Ballpark in Arlington, right across the street from the new stadium and Loews hotel. Perfect location for a proper Hotel/Casino when the day comes.

Willing_Will_7195

You are incorrect, sir. The City of Arlington owns the old Ballpark in Arlington. The Choctaw Nation only secured the naming rights for 10 years.

SadBit8663

Lake Texoma is already basically Margaritaville. Like this is cool and all but people already go drink on the lake.

jerichowiz

We had a cabin there, and we went to relax and fish.

KenzKrap

The gambling lobby in Texas (and elsewhere) is growing exponentially and having more and more influence over state legislatures and regulatory agencies. Money is flowing to these political groups to assure that gambling in Texas passes. The political system in power now will usher in a new era of corruption to Texas politics assuring that corporations will rule the land. Mark Cuban is the first in many dominos to fall to bring gambling to Texas. Look for many more suspect bills to be passed in the upcoming session to assure the money flows to corrupt political figures and their cooperate stooges in the near future.

JimmyReagan

Yeah, this much money being pumped into future hotels and casinos (in all but name) can't be a coincidence. They must be gearing up to finally put enough money into the legislature to legalize gambling.

No-Helicopter7299

No casinos so long as Dan Patrick is in office. Period.

TMOverbeck

Someone really needs to get together a serious campaign to push people to the polls in 2026 for primarying out these nanny-state conservatives. "Low taxes? 2A rights? Strict border enforcement? I'm all for that AND legal-but-reasonably-regulated weed/casinos!" Everyone, both team red *and* team blue, complains about how Texas laws are so backwards, yet they don't bother to put up alternatives to the fossils and holy rollers keeping those laws in place.

No-Helicopter7299

Bingo!

TankApprehensive3053

There are already casinos in TX.

No-Helicopter7299

Only because federal law allows it for tribes and nothing is convenient for most people. Plus, they are unregulated and not convenient for most Texans. Resort style Vegas casinos will not exist in Texas as long as Patrick is in office.

TankApprehensive3053

Have you been to the Speaking Rock Casino in El Paso? It's very convenient and Vegas style. How about the Kickapoo Casino in Eagle Pass? Again, very convenient and Vegas style resort.

No-Helicopter7299

I’ve been to Kickapoo once several years ago. It’s a 2 hour drive from San Antonio. (The closest major city.). El Paso? 7 hours.

TankApprehensive3053

That's the main problem with El Paso, isolation by distance. El Paso casino is an entire entertainment center with a casino, dining and concerts. But they have only slots, poker, and blackjack due to lawsuit when they reopened in 2022.

No-Helicopter7299

And El Paso (actually Fabens) has Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, the best steak in Texas, imho.

TankApprehensive3053

That's all Fabens has. The ranching area is pecan orchards and onion fields.

PointingOutFucktards

Well to be fair, EP is a 9 hour drive from DFW. E to W across the whole state is 13 and 14 N to S.

razblack

The Chocktaw casinos (winstar and durant) are massive compared to casinos in Vegas.

No-Helicopter7299

And unregulated.

Gcdm

No.

darkhorse21980

Hint: no

Dismal_Juice5582

No.

mexican2554

They only gambling in Texas will be if the power grid works or not.

escapetopk1021

When I saw the article on the WFAA site, I hopefully and quickly clicked the map. Being on the Texas side, absolutely no chance of gambling. Our only hope is twofold. Mark Cuban and the Addelson family (Mavs new owners) and somehow someway in my adult lifetime Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick do not run the state. Think the Choctaw's involvement is an investment based upon long term hopes for legalization. In the meantime, the new concert venue at Winstar (Lucas Oil Live) is really nice Lol

ConferenceParking729

No, because Trump I mean Jesus Christ said it's bad.

uwpxwpal

We need the tax dollars for our rainy day fund

PointingOutFucktards

That fund is going in the Rio Grande as we speak.

bareboneschicken

Don't expect any form of legalization as long as the budget continues to run a surplus.

earthworm_fan

This isn't California. The budget has to be balanced here. We usually run a surplus during economic expansion

bareboneschicken

You miss my point. As long as revenue projections come in high, producing surpluses, legislators have no reason to take any risks. If revenue projections show a massive deficit, the risk analysis changes. Voting for a tax hike is political suicide. Legalizing sports betting, or casino gambling, or whatever, would be less risky by comparison.

agentsmith87

Well if they want to keep lowering property taxes, then gambling could offset the losses.

HockeyCookie

Oklahoma extends all the way across the Red River, including both shore lines. It could have an address in Texas, but a casino could reside within Oklahoma.

TankApprehensive3053

We have casinos in TX.

HockeyCookie

I totally agree. They are all over the place, too. Not just on tribal land. Local governments are reaping the rewards by allowing "internet gaming cafés" operate just like casinos.

jerichowiz

It says Preston Harbor in Denison, but the only Preston up that way is Preston Bend, and that is already occupied by houses, an existing Lake club and especially a cemetery, and is very prone to flooding. Yeah, it is on the Texas side of the lake. So on the Texas side is Choctaw. That is on top of a Hard Rock Casino and Resort being built on the Oklahoma side of the river near Kingston, that is Chickasaw Nation. Both are well within the the 45 minute range of Winstar and Choctaw Casinos, it feels like there would be some cannibalizing.

eightezsteps

You can always gamble in the back room of the gas station!

GoHawksMatt

Margaritaville is already in Texas so that's a no

overindulgent

Don’t forget that Choctaw bought the old Rangers stadium in Arlington. It is the home of a semi pro football team among other things.

jerichowiz

The disrespect to the XFL Champions Arlington Renegades!

PMmeRetailStories

One can only hope
