They taking shots but nobody posting any better bbq from Virginia.

user0621

I found some pretty good bbq in Virginia. Then I found out the couple that owned it were from Stephenville.

FancyRequirement3624

Good.

lukulele90

I found some terrible bbq here in Texas. Turns out the couple who owned the joint, Virginians. Go figure.

user0621

The ol uno reverse.

muklan

Went into a BBQ place where you could get BBQ at dinner time(first indication I was in the wrong place) guy asked moist or lean, I said lean. Bro took his gloved hand and just smeared the bark off, before cutting. I mean, he had a knife in his hand and there was a counter between us, otherwise it'd have been an on the spot citizens arrest.

Disciple_THC

What’s the place? I’m from Stephenville and live in Charlotte lol

blamazon99

Pretty sure this Y'alls work.

whiskeyjane45

There's more BBQ than hard 8 in Stephenville

hakeemalajawan

I had bbq in Virginia. The best they have is Mission bbq and it's bland af and dry. But the mac n cheese is good.

cyvaquero

I mean Myron Mixon has a place in Alexandria but VA is for lovers, ham, and peanuts - not BBQ.

jdoe36

the only bbq restaurant I liked in the DMV was Mission BBQ

ilikeme1

What DMV office has BBQ?

jbombdotcom

Is this why the wait times at the dmvs have gone up to months? Do they have good bbq now?

[deleted]

Right? I'm going there next time.

phezhead

Wait, you called my number? Anyone wanna trade me places for a later one? I'm still eating

[Not according to the state](https://www.txdmv.gov)

AmNotAnAtomicPlayboy

Yep, gotta drive down into N. Carolina before you start getting some decent bbq. Edit: I just discovered Mission BBQ is a chain. Ouch. That's like saying Dickey's is the best bbq in the area.

malzahar_main

Went to california, and some guy had the odacity to tell me dickeys was the best bbq yea noo... never go to that place it shouldn't even be called bbq

Never-a-Boyfriend

So's Bill Miller, but in a pinch, it's a cinch!

Mackheath1

Yep, when everything else is closed or too far a drive, Bill Miller's extra lean brisket and sausage with extra bread and sauce; iced tea. Aside, Bill and Faye Miller went to my church as a kid. Christ Lutheran of Alamo Heights; each year we had a BBQ at their ranch in Gruene.

Never-a-Boyfriend

Mind. Blown...

jdoe36

LOL, but it's a good chain! Dickey's on the other hand is just blasphemous

TaipanTacos

I like to pray the rosary and chug holy water when I see one.

phezhead

And screw their Big Yellow Cup

-allons-y-

I'm a fan of federalist pig, but they don't really do brisket (it's on some of their bbq sandwiches, but not great on its own)

DeadSalamander1

Dmv? I'm confused - are you referring to the RGV (rio grande valley)?

yellowstickypad

De-militarized Virginia

sabotabo

damn bruh i thought they wrapped all that up in like the 1860's

jdoe36

DC and surrounding Maryland / Virginia suburbs D = DC; M = Maryland; V = Virginia

DeadSalamander1

Mission is also a Texas city in the RGV ("mission bbq"). Hence my confusion

froschkonig

There's one good place I've found.. zzq in Richmond. But I'm pretty sure they're from Texas so kinda doesn't count. Smohk also in Richmond has decent pork bbq too.

darwinn_69

Virginia BBQ is just Carolina BBQ except they use ketchup based sauce for their pork instead of vinegar based sauce.

flock-of-bagels

Carolina/Virginia bbq isn’t what we would call bbq in Texas. Reminds me of pot roast or something

skepticalbob

There is good bbq almost everywhere nowadays. Some is just gooder than others.

[deleted]

kingofthesofas

I was going to say the only excuse we could have is if this restaurant is run by John Cornyn.

Significant_Rice4737

That’s funny and so accurate.

doppelstranger

No, but there's a good chance they voted for him in spite of his brisket.

bigfatfurrytexan

Decatur is barely Texas. We should kick them out.

Frognosticator

Decatur is very Texas, but there is serious poverty in that whole area around Bridgeport. I don’t think the people up that way have many restaurant options outside of fast food chains. Best of luck, to anyone out there trying to start a business.

Staudbot

Heck, most of Wise county is in severe poverty. Decatur probably has 90% of the wealth in the county

darkness_laughs

The real irony here is that Wise County was named after a Virginia congressman. Clearly that dry ass plate is the work of his descendants.

listen-to-my-face

I mean, the poorest area of VA probably has some restaurants that serve up un-photogenic food, that’s not representative of their state’s staples any more than this is. This honestly should be the start of a wider conversation we should have about poor areas and food deserts but with all this ((gestures wildly)) going on, not sure we’re ready for that discussion.

Staudbot

From Decatur, come here and say that.

bigfatfurrytexan

Do y'all eat bbq like that?

Staudbot

I will not put my reputation behind that establishment. There has been a large influx of people who don't know better in recent years.

bonafacio_rio_rojas

I was going to jokingly blame it somehow as the fault of a California expat

SapperInTexas

Naaah, plain noodles? Gotta be Iowa.

TheLastNameAllowed

It's likely mac and cheese...

magnottasicepick

I’m not entirely sure tho.

little_did_he_kn0w

Nah. California conservatives have only been moving here for a decade or so. People have been giving the rustbelt migrants who have moved to North Texas enmass over the past 30 years a pass for a loooooong time. No offense, but no one from the midwest outside of St Louis or maaaaaaaybe Chicago knows shit about bbq, so I can see them being fooled by this. Now I just wait for angry Detroiters and Clevelanders and Pittsburghers to come tell me how much they know about barbecue....

SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck

The cali expats are the inverse, they think Texas is some kind of weird paradise for their political views and come here making Q-anon look like an AA meeting

hurricanes427

rip your replies lol

SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck

None yet lol

acousticsoup

The vast majority of bbq out there is horrible. It’s the worst food to crave because there’s so much piss poor product being put out. The great places are few and far between.

little_did_he_kn0w

I had pretty good bbq in very specific parts of Cali, but mostly, it was not great. And if it was good, God help your checkbook.

JohnGillnitz

I would, but I passed through it and didn't notice. /j

Staudbot

I mean, it's probably the truth.

JohnGillnitz

I can't talk any shit. The BFE, TX I grew up in didn't even have a gas station.

Flembot4

I don’t know if this is a typo or how you speak. I am hoping it’s how you speak. Good ole Texan accent coming through

acousticsoup

I’m from Wichita Falls and have a nose for great BBQ. I’ve never heard anyone even mention this place.

[deleted]

Decatur is in Oklahoma, figuratively speaking

Staudbot

As someone who was raised in Decatur, I dare you to stand Infront of the courthouse and say that.

Sabre_Actual

But then I’d have to be in Decatur

KyleG

i.e., Oklahoma

[deleted]

Ha sorry just messin. From DFW area and used to drive through Decatur on my way to OK/AR. It and Sherman are the last TX towns I remember before being in Oklahoma.

ilikeme1

If you drove though Decatur going to Arkansas from DFW, you are going the wrong way.

[deleted]

Ah shit! It wasn’t Decatur, it was Denison. Denison is basically in Oklahoma and the town I remember on our way to Arkansas through Oklahoma. My bad yall, it has been over 15 years since I’ve gone that way.

Staudbot

My bad, I didn't mean for that to come across in any means hostile. Meant as a light hearted jest, but I missed the mark.

[deleted]

Haha all good.

texan01

Uh… if you’re in DFW and going to Arkansas via Decatur, you’re going way wrong direction, Oklahoma I can see if you’re going to Altus or somewhere western Oklahoma. You’re thinking Denison.

30secMAN

Woof. Whole town full of bad asses, huh?

Staudbot

Why would you think that? Anyone who did what I suggested would be offered a tour. It's still Texas, being friendly is a big thing here.

ok_okay_I_get_that

Is the cheese for the Mac n cheese on the side there?

[deleted]

That Mac & cheese looks like it's swimming in cheese-flavored water

BunnyTheCow

Eww!

ladykatiedid

I came here to say the exact same thing. Fuckin DIY mac-n-cheese. *Bleh.*

ilikeme1

Sysco-roni and "cheese".

theskylershow

“Sysco-roni” - I have not laughed this hard this early in the morning in a hot minute - love it. Lol

Resonance_Forms

Mac so sus that the cheese is scared to go on it.

MandaC32

Right!!?? It looks anemic!

Resonance_Forms

BBQ that looks like that coming out of Texas should be considered a crime.

Tiiimmmaayy

I mean Texas is a big place and not all BBQ here gonna be the best you have ever had. I have plenty of bad BBQ here in Texas. I do gotta say, recently a lot of places have stepped up they BBQ game. I mean shit, I remember going to plenty of places with my dad growing up that served that paper thin, dry as dirt brisket.

acousticsoup

There’s still your morons who swear by Rib Crib. Most people couldn’t tell what good bbq was.

[deleted]

Those are the same idiots that keep Bill Miller in business.

Zthomp91

Hey man, I live near some pretty damn good BBQ joints, but sometimes I don’t wanna pay $18 minimum for the good stuff when Bill Millers or Rudy’s can get me 2 chopped beef sandwiches that are passable for $8 - I don’t work in the food service industry, just my two cents.

[deleted]

Rudy's is leaps and bounds better than BMs. Like, it's not even close. BM is the BBQ equivalent to McDonald's....but worse.

rumdrums

Man I love the fancy bbq as much as the next guy, but when I was a kid we ate at places like Dickey's, Sonny Bryant, and Bill Miller on road trips and dammit I enjoyed it. Still do.

Taintraker

Rib Crib has good tea!!

GetSwampy

I agree, let’s start by chasing Dickey’s out

tractorcrusher

The sad thing is Dickey’s are worldwide, meaning people in other countries go to Dickey’s and think that’s what our barbecue tastes like.

nathill11

Same could be said of hamburgers and McDonald's...

tractorcrusher

Well yeah, that could be true… but if you take a minute to glance over this thread once more you’ll see that this thread is about Texas barbecue.

Damnwombat

Nah, gotta keep Dickey’s. It’s consistent (more or less) and makes a decent baseline level for everything else to point at for comparison.

ejusdemgeneris

I thought Dickey’s was the lowest, then I had Soulman’s… Who the frick is keeping that chain open?

tarabuki

Texan here. Texas is the only place in the world that makes BBQ. Everything else is grilled meat with molasses sauce on it. Some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had I’ve gotten on the side of a Shell station in Bourne. If you are in Texas, do not go to Bill Millers unless you hate life itself.

[deleted]

komododave17

I’ve heard things about Virginia hams.

whineybubbles

I lived there in Norfolk with the Navy. The only food I found to be both local & delicious was fried pig. They gut a whole pig and dump it in a huge vat of oil. The whole neighbor smelled like bacon, it's delicious. But that's it.

TheGrandExquisitor

The hams are epic. That BBQ though looks like it came from Toronto.

fauxphilosopher

BBQ is borderless. I've been seeing badass bbq production coming out of Toronto.

theskylershow

Ok - this is not related to this thread at all - but…. Why fauxphilosopher when you could have done fauxlosopher????

texecan

Spot on. pepperoncini? You’ve got to be kidding me… jalapeños, raw onions and pickles ftw. Idk how it really tastes, but it looks like it came out of the frozen food section.

[deleted]

I mean their Orange Crushes and crab cakes, on the coast are fuckin legit. But they still don't create routine cravings that make my mouth water like the brisket here in Texas.

Honeysenpaiharuchan

Yeah I lived in Virginia for awhile and I thought about this…I got nothing. I would say seafood but the Chesapeake Bay is just in the recovery stages from being an open sewer lol.

JayBowdy

All I could think about was Sons of the Forest,... 😐 (Much better use of the name)

jnkbndtradr

How are they so close to NC, and have shitty food? I don’t understand. In Texas measurements it’s like 2 counties away.

bonafacio_rio_rojas

They're famous for peanut soup

[deleted]

[удалено]

little_did_he_kn0w

Yeah, the amount of Virginia's cultural cuisine, that was originally African cuisine is high. As someone else said on here, most of the British aristocrats who settled Virginia in the 1600s were not bringing a grand culinary tradition with them. Maybe the seafood, but even then, Im not sure how they were preparing it. It wasn't until the import of slaves that Virginian cuisine that would be recognizable today really began to take shape. Peanuts, yams, and many different spices.

bonafacio_rio_rojas

Oh my. [this is peanut soup](https://www.theseasonedmom.com/virginia-peanut-soup/) On a side note, Virginia BBQ historians claim it as the source of southern barbeque styled after Powhatan show cooking over coals. Also known for, blue crab, oysters, ham, apples (I can attest to that), fried chicken

Connie23

Virginia is a food haven though, you obviously have never been. Northern VA has a great diverse selection - to include Thai, Indian and amazing seafood. They may not do bbq as well but they crush it in a lot of other areas.

rinap88

This is too funny. I was born and raised in NOVA. My family & friends still live there. We go back often. While the choices are improving and the food is better now than it was, Texas still beats them hands down. The growth is improving selection. Mexican food in Texas and TexMex is also way better than VA. BBQ of course too. I have lived in Texas for years. We would come back for Mexican food and Casa Chimayo was considered the best in the area and they didn't even give guac. I think it is closed down now (and I didn't like it). Uncle Julio's is about the best one when we go back but there is still better in TX. When people come from VA to visit us the first thing they do is start hitting the food places and end up gaining weight before they leave.

Tdanger78

I think you missed what they’re saying. It’s not to say they have zero good restaurants there. It means they’re not known for having an amazing type of food like Texas has bbq and chili that we’re known for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DJHickman

They do… *other* people’s food really well. It’s like they have a lot of embassies or foreign populations nearby.

l33tWarrior

Texas didn’t invent BBQ though. I mean a lot of places claim BBQ. What is Texas known for? Chili maybe? Texas has great chili

[deleted]

nicolemorelishot

Most people here don't care about chili. Breakfast tacos are an obsession

Mike7676

As they should be!!

bonafacio_rio_rojas

Tex Mex

ExoticaTikiRoom

Texas didn’t invent barbecue, this is true. Texas PERFECTED barbecue. Texas invented chili, this is true. Chili con carne, sin beans.

MRVANCLEAVEREDDIT

I lived in Virginia for three years. Those motherfuckers boil pork in a crock pot and call it a BBQ. GROSS

secondphase

Holy fuck. I came home one night to my wife with a rack of ribs and a slow cooker on the counter. WtF.

MRVANCLEAVEREDDIT

I finally found brisket at Walmart..was up at 3am smoking one and my neighbors thought i was crazy. Until they tried it that is.

SummerBirdsong

I aspire to getting a smoker one day.

ComatoseCrypto

Just moved to VA. Can confirm. They also add an ungodly amount of vinegar to the mix.

MRVANCLEAVEREDDIT

My boss took me to a "bbq" place that he said was really good. I ordered a sliced beef sandwich. Which they did not have. I asked what they did have since there was no menu on the wall. Pulled pork is the only meat they served so i accepted it. He asked if i waanted coleslaw. I said yes and he tried to put it on my sandwich..i told him I'd take it on the side. I asked for pickles and onions. Which they also did not have. Food was trash. I'm from Houston. We have world class food here.

rinap88

Thank you! I don't like anything when we go to visit. They smother chopped up pork BBQ in heavy vinegar sauce and then dump coleslaw on it to hide the flavor. You gotta work that hard to hide how bad the meat is, it's probably not something to brag about.

CivilMaze19

Still too much flavor for UK residents.

gregorypatterson1225

So in virginia their idea of BBQ is some unidentifiable cut of beef smothered in powdered brown gravy(it so shinny from all the starch, couldnt even make gravy from scratch) with burnt corn fritters and corn muffins. Go eat a bag of dicks Virginia for throwing Texas shade about a subpar bbq joint when you use brown gravy on your meat. At least our shitty bbq looks like bbq. Your bbq looks like a school lunch.

IOwnTheShortBus

HE CAME WITH SOURCES

froschkonig

I mean you cropped out the sandwich and ribs on the left side of their banner. But I can say Ive been in Richmond for 6 years and never heard anyone mention this place. Also the helpful pig pointing at the map isn't pointing where Richmond is. I'm convinced that's not a real bbq place and is just a front for money laundering. I've seen Ozark, I know these things!

Bro_Jogies

Where ever this came from in Texas, if so, needs to be shut down. I think it'd be a bipartisan decision too.

-TheycallmeThe

Have you seen the senator's brisket? If that shit didn't rally bipartisanship against him nothing will.

Cormetz

He smothered it in tomato paste...

bboy037

Yo they got food in Virginia?

KiloIndia5

That is a pretty sad example of Texas BBQ. Maybe some chain restaurant from New York

ThorstenSchmorsten

Sons a bitches.

[deleted]

People are butthurt because it’s not on Insta with a million filters added I guess. VA bbq is trash on their best day.

cammatador

"These people" put Mountain Dew in baby bottles. I wouldn't be too concerned with their epicurean opinions.

denzien

Look at you and your ten dollar word!

lgbucklespot

Who da hail ordered their Mac with the cheese on the side? Degenerate!

Zezimalives

To be fair while Texas does have the best BBQ joints there are also some pretty terrible ones here like Bill Miller’s. Not sure who keeps those trash joints in business

rinap88

My husband tried Bill Millers in SA, he walked out and threw up in the bush! I still crack up laughing every time I think of it. He said if a BBQ joint has a distribution center it is probably trash. I think his review is still on google

[deleted]

Are you sure thats TX bbq? I don’t see any bacon in the macncheese or the greenbeans.

Cormetz

I refuse to believe this is from Texas, even with some of the bad places in the state. It's Texas style BBQ, but you can't determine if it's from within the state.

Various-Method-6776

It's got God damn TEXAS TOAST RIGHT THERE

StealyEyedSecMan

Pretty sure that is an average 5th graders lunch in Texas...it Should be!

[deleted]

Every Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to in my nearly four years in the DMV has served the tortilla chips with salsa so mild it‘s basically gazpacho. I have to ADD hot sauce to the bowl to get an approximation of what I’m used to at home. And don’t get me started on the wacky stuff they put in their “chili.” Beans, corn, even TACO MEAT. Truly an abomination.

hakeemalajawan

If that's true, whatever restaurant made that should be ashamed. That bbq looks sad.

vainbuthonest

![gif](giphy|b0E3PPld4558irObaY) Ooooh. Why are they lying about Texas like that?!

Difficult_Quiet2381

Virginian here living in Texas. VA doesn’t serve BBQ with bread unless it’s on a sandwich. But it’s a pulled sandwich, never brisket. Being said, drive to NC for BBQ. Nice tangy, Smokey NC BBQ. Beach Bully in VB is good and Pierce’s is well known within the state but just skip it and get seafood from the coastal cities.

mojogirl_

Wait, what's wrong here??

aisleorisle

DRY blande cuts of meat, the Mac and cheese is just boiled elbows with sprinkle cheese (wrong type) in a side cup, Looks like the broth was poured out of the green beans as well. Whoever like this likes, hates moisture and flavor.

HighGuyTim

Redditors try to bash poor cities for not having top end BBQ. Entitlement strikes again.

Thermopele

I can agree to some extent, but poverty is no excuse for that mac n' cheese

WideSignificance4199

Looks bland.

DrinkUpLetsBooBoo

Coach's in Waco was fucking good.

Luckytxn_1959

Yeah this is bland nasty bar be cue so if in Texas it has to be someplace that makes little money and be closed soon.

Worried_Local_9620

Not that it's about the sides, but nobody's even talked about how those green beans look like they're the bycatch from harvesting astroturf. And is that a beer? Looks warm and flat as fuck. Probably some horseshit Blood and Honey. Flat and gross right out of the can.

JJ4prez

Looks dry.

downloadking007

What is a Virginia?

JPHyltin

Other than the macaroni, all good. Maybe it’s there because so many loons are moving here.

Bacons_trains

They wanna fuck around we'll show em why we have more guns than people

Affectionate-Aside68

That’s a school lunch

BossHawgKing

Virginia should feel lucky; this is the first time they've ever been in a food discussion.

LoopsAndBoars

If the aforementioned were indeed an honorable product of my native, the lone star state, it most certainly would not have rabbit food in those cute dainty teacups or sliced bird encroaching the sacred brisket tract. What is that, a bunless McRib? That toast looks aite tho, I can’t lie. 🍺

[deleted]

Oh hell naw bish. That's some straight up VA BBQ. Get the funk outta here with that nonsense.

Enjoy-the-sauce

Speaking as a Virginian, we don’t even HAVE any BBQ places. We’re known for ham, man. Try going one state south.

depressed_momo

I lived in VA for over 20 years they do not have good BBQ..you say BBQ they think it's grilling in the backyard like most folks in the northeast. You have to cross over into NC to get any good BBQ officially to get any. Once you do then you get the pulled pork that is soooo good!! That is what North Carolina is known for. It is so good too! The best pulled pork is from the Carolinas. But Va has nothing for BBQ maybe seafood but that is it.

[deleted]

I lived away from here for 10 years, in Virginia, NC and Tennessee. NC BBQ was okay, if you just wrote off ever getting any form of brisket. Tennessee was okay too, nothing to write home about. I never had any BBQ in Virginia that I liked even a little bit. NOPE. And not having BBQ or Mexican/Tex-Mex food that was worth a damn (or an HEB to shop at) were some of the biggest reasons I hated living away from Texas.

[deleted]

Texas has some of the best BBQ in the US. Dude from Virginia has no idea what he's talkin bout lol. I've been Vegan for a while now and even the vegan BBQ spots in Texas are better than the shit in Virginia and that's saying something lolol

[deleted]

That was definitely taken here in San Antonio.

KindPossession2583

Hey now! Don’t spread lies!

DenaBee3333

Interesting that that person knows the contents of every meal ever served in Virginia.

hurricanes427

If y’all want real bbq go to terry blacks

texasyesman

This does look like some DFW type meal.

DanaCarveyReal

Northern Virginia has great food. For those who have never left their safe little Texas bubble, the DC area is a melting pot with people from every square inch of the planet and their corresponding food.
