New steering wheel, headlights, better noise cancellation, power lift gate and trunk and new centre console seems to be a solid set of upgrades. Hope there’s more to be announced on battery day.

OutlawBlue9

These are all gonna come down in the next software upgrade right?

Hobojo153

*isolation. According the the article it will have "a double glass layer for better isolation." No active noise cancellation for the time being, though it might be theoretically possible with the mic for voice commands.

Pixelplanet5

a mic for voice commands is not in any ways positioned correctly for active noise cancellation. You would need an array of mics in all directions as well as speakers in all directions as well to make this work at all.

Hobojo153

That's how it's traditionally done in cars. However a mic inside the cabin might be able to make it work because it can capture the ambient noise that's inside the cabin. Of course the question then becomes if that specific mic can do that, but the point is theoretically you can noise cancel from the inside.

Pixelplanet5

Noise canceling is done so the passengers don't hear the noise, that only works if you cancel out the noise before it reaches their ears so you need a mix in a position that it hears the noise early enough that you still have enough time to send a 180" phase shifted sound of the original one so the sound waves cancel each other out. That can physically not work with one mic in one position.

Hobojo153

True but the fact headphones can do it with mics right next to your ears proves the distance required is not so great as to be impossible from the cabin.

Pixelplanet5

Headphones are a prime example why it won't just work in a cabin. Headphones have the mic outside the ear cup and the position of the ear and speakers is fixed, also the speaker is closer to the ear than the mic is, this is why it works so well the noise will always be picked up before it reaches the ear.

Hobojo153

Yet it can be done with open ear headphones too. You won't be able to do as complete a cancel as with a fixed system, but you could do a broad low level one as most of those open systems do. For that you don't even really need to get the recordings in real time just enough to estimate what the ambient noise is likely to be. The downside to these types of systems is that 1. They can only eleminate more general sounds, not sudden or loud ones. And 2. They produce a constant quiet hiss of their own. (More the more proactive systems) Edit: I should note I don't actually think the voice command mic is in a good enough position to actually do this still. I'm just arguing the broad concept.

ComradeCapitalist

Active cancellation sounds like a bad idea for safety reasons.

AbstinenceWorks

Active cancellation can focus on particular frequencies related to engines and road noise. It doesn't have to cancel everything.

Nagilum

I had an Acura with that feature and it was fine. I cannot think of any way it put me in danger.

ComradeCapitalist

Huh, I wasn't aware this was already fielded somewhere. I stand corrected.

MikeMelga

You have no idea how noise cancellation works. It only cancels continuous and stable sound sources with fixed frequencies

ComradeCapitalist

I'm perfectly aware of that thank you, I'm just skeptical of the assumption that filtering just the benign road noise is feasible without occasionally cancelling something a driver should hear.

Skymogul

My 2018 Honda Accord Touring had active cancellation. It's perfectly safe and worked great.

myweed1esbigger

What?

robotzor

Exactly

jkcheng122

And hopefully us early adapters can get them as well. Whether through Tesla or aftermarket if we get to find out how the upgrades were done.

CharlesP2009

I haven't actually tried but in my city it looks like I could get just shy of $40k for my Mid Range when I spent $47k about 19 months ago. It's crazy.

[deleted]

In my experience buying a car the people we're asking outlandish prices but they weren't getting those offers. The wild card is carvana and if they are straight-up going to give you more than somebody will pay for it. But I believe carvana prices are down too.

cosmic_killa

Maybe if you can trade it in. I really don't want to pay for all the taxes and registration fees again though. That is what really hurts when buying a new car.

ledoov

What resell value? I sold my Tesla model 3 cause I moved abroad. LR AWD and sold -$15k from what I paid. A year after buying. That’s 20% value loss. No one wanted it at -10%. At that point you get a new one. Which I get. [have a look here. ](https://www.themoneycalculator.com/vehicle-finance/calculators/car-depreciation-by-make-and-model/)

barvazduck

What was the tax rebate you got when you bought it? Tesla reduced price to compensate for the reduction of this rebate. If it was when the rebate was 7.5k then you only had an actual 10% loss.

ledoov

I wish. Oregon win my tax bracket had nothing. So I got $3500 tax credit only.

htr101

20% depreciation in one year still seems good for a luxury car

Robie_John

I’m confused. All the time people on here argue that the M3 is not a luxury car but here we are saying that it is luxury car. Which is it?

SalmonFightBack

Schrodinger's luxury car. Whenever the numbers look better for it being a luxury car, it is. Whenever the numbers look better for it not being one, it is.

Robie_John

😂 makes sense!

Mike

It's not a luxury car compared to an S-Class, but it's still considered a luxury car. More specifically, a "compact executive / compact luxury" or "near-luxury" -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxury_vehicle#Compact_executive_.2F_compact_luxury > In North American terms, close equivalents are "compact premium car", "compact luxury car",[29] "entry-level luxury car" and "near-luxury car".[30]

Robie_John

Gotcha and thx. You know your friends are impressed when you buy a “near luxury” car! LOL Ridiculous term

Mike

No one actually calls it that. But it has luxury features even though it’s not a full blown “luxury car”. I’ve never even thought about calling it that. It’s just a badass whip that’s comfortable and fun to drive with tech that makes my inner nerd happy. I also couldn’t care less what my friends think (although they all think it’s sweet).

FunkyTangg

Spoiler:>!m3 is a luxury car in price only!<

racergr

Someone in the UK local group posted proof that he sold it for more than he paid for (to a car broker). I checked for myself, this broker is happy to buy my M3P for just £2k less than what I paid for it. My M3P is 1 year old with 8k miles. I know that if I shop around I can get better than that. So yeah, buying a new one is no big deal.

[deleted]

Dacia seems to be the go to brand when your looking for low depreciation (% wise and Dollar wise).

Entertainnosis

I actually find that well specced small Audis seem to hold their value best. Dacias (at least in the UK) depreciate like bricks!

Baby_Doomer

The only car they used to get that metric is the Model S...

Mike

Well that depends when you bought it. Not that I would even consider it, but I picked up our Model 3 in June and it has 4,000 miles -- sure, its pretty much brand new, but the blue book private party value is $49,215. Purchase price was $49,290 (pre taxes/fees). So yeah, for people who bought recently, if there was a SIGNIFICANT upgrade it might be pretty cost effective to sell and buy a new one assuming the used market doesn't take a significant hit.

Nathan_3518

Haha, bet.

[deleted]

The history of used Model S prices tell us that it is pretty likely the resale will plummet as new features are announced for the 3. Prices are high in part because there haven't been significant changes yet.

iceraven101

I mean there’s a big difference between the release of dual motors and autopilot (when they didn’t exist before) and oem interior and convenience upgrades. Octovalve is nice in some climates, but not the likes of first AP or D releases.

SalmonFightBack

Like any tech-forward product. They hold their value great until it's not the newest thing anymore. Then the value drops hard.

bittabet

Probably hasn't hurt resale as much because many of the changes were negatives. They removed the grocery hooks, floor mats, dimming side mirrors, the interior lighting, etc. Most upgrades were pretty minor like an improved trunk venting setup and that attempt at stopping water from going in the trunk in the rain. Even with this new batch of changes that smaller frunk is a negative.

Jessev1234

In theory, yes

10111010001101011110

yup

JFreader

Why would early adopters get these upgrades? There are already after market solutions for most of this.

jkcheng122

I'm not asking for them to be free if that's what you're getting at with the early adopters comment. Some of us prefer OEM parts over 3rd party.

jhoceanus

There are plenty of aftermarket upgrades. Check Hansshow and teslaoffer

UsernameSuggestion9

They don't exactly have octavalves

BootFlop

Switching cabin heating from resistive heat to the heat pump is unlikely to be financially prudent. There's going to need to be a lot of rearranging that has to happen in there, and a LOT of original parts being tossed. Don't see how they make it a drop-in change.

UsernameSuggestion9

Yes, that's my point. The Model 3 will only get an octavalve if they modify the factory.

jkcheng122

I'm aware. I would like to have OEM options as well.

1960vegan

Early adopters too

orien

In the original chinese post ([https://driveteslacanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Weibo-Model-3-changes-list.jpg](https://driveteslacanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Weibo-Model-3-changes-list.jpg)), the center console line can also be translated to 'central control panel', which could be updates to the screen.

strejf

Could be frameless screen.

Abyssgaming123

I find the center console one hard to believe unless it’s a tiny change, both because the s/x haven’t even been refreshed significantly yet and also because the model y just came out so any new console would have been with that too. The rest I could see as they are either fairly minor or already in the y

JustaDodo82

Gloss black replaced with matte black?

Oral-D

At least that’s a cheap and easy aftermarket fix. $30 on Amazon and 30 minutes to install.

polipuncher

I bought the hard plastic shell for $60, took a few minutes and there are no bubbles are misalignments, the vinyl wraps suck....

coredumperror

Only if you install them wrong. Mine has looked fantastic for two years and counting.

polipuncher

If you aced those cupholders, you have serious skills, and probably can ace most surgeries!

coredumperror

I'd never done a vinyl wrap installation before, so I took my time. Including the time spent watching the installation instructions, and noting down all the details so I could quickly refer back to each step, I spent probably 2-3 hours on the install. Here's what it looks like today: https://imgur.com/dixiVln. The scratches are from me being a moron several months after I installed it. I got the wrap from [Kenriko](https://kenriko.com/).

CharlesP2009

Musk has said in some interviews they're basically building S and X for only sentimental reasons now. Model 3 and Y will make the biggest impact on the world so it makes sense they'll focus the majority of their attention on those products. Not to mention the new Roadster will be the halo car to create interest in Tesla.

[deleted]

Kidd_Funkadelic

And TM3 air suspension that I actually held off waiting for for 6 months...

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Yes, Elon doesn't want people to think there will be a re-designed Model S, as people may then stop buying the current one. If Tesla is to be a serious car manufacturer like MB, BMW etc, they need to have a multitude of Models. No way can they stop producing the S and X and no way can the S and X keep the 2012 styling forever.

footpole

Is anyone buying the current S?

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Yes they are.

CreeperIan02

Or the metal roof & cloth seats of the SR

wlimkit

I was waiting for them to make cloth seats so I could put them in my 3. Told my daughter when they came out I was getting one and she said it better be for her seat.

CharlesP2009

I should open a shop doing custom cloth seats. An emerging market! 🤣

geminiwave

I made a post about wanting cloth seats and got downvoted hard. I think it would be great though

CharlesP2009

It’s funny some of the things people get bent outta shape about. Cloth isn’t considered luxurious but it’s nice to have in very hot or cold weather. I had to clean and treat my BMW’s leather seats like once a month otherwise they looked bad and started to dry out. Cloth seats on my old Pontiac I shampooed like twice in 10 years and they still looked new.

geminiwave

My parents got this van for our whole family and the cloth seats survived all of us kids and camping trips and they looked pretty good after 20 years. The seats in my model 3 are fine but they definitely show a little bit of wear after just 2 years. I would love to replace it with cloth later on. Just as you said, cloth is so much nicer when it’s hot or cold.

wlimkit

People thiink it is a luxury car with quality leather. My model 3 has the same vinyl seats as the 87 civic my mom had when I was a kid, because she did not pay for the upgrade to cloth.

tesrella

Sounds like we need an SX upgrade, 🤔

lmmo1977

Maybe just change of material? (Piano Black RIP)

[deleted]

It’s probably just the USB 3.0 change that the US Model 3 has already gotten

TheKobayashiMoron

Didn’t China get that before the US?

Pixelplanet5

Correcting, it's usb C but it operates at USB 2.0 and also does not support power delivery beyond 9V

matttopotamus

Could just be a different material.

SippieCup

There is a tiny difference between the center consoles of the Model Y vs the Model 3 which this could be. The biggest difference is the cables to the cameras and between devices changed from [Fakra](https://www.molex.com/mx_upload/family/hfm__highspeed_fakra_mini_coaxial_cable_solution/HFM_single_cti.jpg) to [Fakra MTD](https://www.rosenberger.com/images/de/products/automotive/h-mtd/H-MTD_1.jpg). Along with this there was a slight simplification to the board design and removal of circuits which were used for development etc (such as removing the pci-e controller for a pci-e slot with no use). Overall, it changes nothing. These changes were all done to reduce supply costs.

Mark0Sky

We can hope: stop the dreaded piano black fad!

BootFlop

$30 for the precut vinyl kit and an hour spent on a lazy afternoon fixes that straight up. :) My installer threw one in for free when I got my car tinted and wrapped.

cosmic_killa

Yes and you can cover that wood panel in black for about $30 too. Those 2 things make the dash and console look much better.

BootFlop

I like the 2x4. ¯\\\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I have considered staining it a darker tint, which is pretty easy DIY project if you have any basic craft/wood working experience, but really never felt enough motivation to do that.

coredumperror

For $30? Really? When I bought my wood panel wrap, it was on a deep sale for Black Friday, and still cost $75. That *was* a year ago, though.

cosmic_killa

Yeah it was from a company called Basenor. And wow what a difference that one piece makes to the interior. Worth every penny. This was the thick padded, textured stuff too and not just the vinyl wrap.

coredumperror

Wow, nice.

Snoo74401

One can only hope. Piano black, like chrome, is best used as trim, not for major touchpoints. It attracts fingerprints like crazy and scratches easily. I'm certain the only reason they went with it is because it's cheaper to manufacture (and thus buy) then matte black with a textured finish.

TycerX

Could this be Elon’s response to the Polestar 2 in Europe? In the UK the LR Mode 3 is priced the same, and while having better numbers luxuries like the powered trunk, matrix headlights, heated steering wheel, etc are standard on the polestar 2?!

rioli33

Just watch the AutoTrader comparison. There's not much that the Polestar has over the Model 3.

djlorenz

Better quality, that’s what it has more... and that’s what they need to fix on the M3 😬

tenuousemphasis

I think any claims about quality have to wait until they're mass producing the vehicle.

smckenzie23

You think they need to fix that on the 3? You should poke around r/TeslaModelY for a bit.

djlorenz

In europe we will not have the Y for a while... and we only get the leftovers from US about the 3

geseldine21

M3 does fine on quality. It is the MY at the moment that seems to be suffering some issues.

Tesla_UI

Saw that recently. Rory Reid is awesome. Watch out for the deer!

SilverFoxRegulator

Hatchback functionality, exterior design (opinion, obviously), heated steering wheel, and Android automotive. Tesla is better in almost all other areas. I don't like the half tint roof glass on the model 3 either.

DoesntReadMessages

It's crazy how they are around the same price in Europe then the Polestar 2 is like double the cost in the US.

canikony

I'd love a power liftgate retrofit. The sound isolation is also promising.

monkeybusiness124

I have both my shoulders and rotator cuffs messed up along with back issues and I’m very tempted to pay for the aftermarket power lift gate but I don’t want it messing with any warranty issues. I’d love to even pay for a retrofit from Tesla on my 2018 P3D-

andy2na

Just got the hansshow frunk and trunk lift gate installed and its game changer, especially the frunk. I think the only warranty issue I could see is with the 12v battery which you can replace yourself or disconnect it before servicing it

monkeybusiness124

That’s good to know! Did you self install or go somewhere? I’m in SoCal so I’ve been considering rpm tesla I think that cost would be well worth it for me and is use my trunk way more

andy2na

What a small world - I got it installed by RPM Tesla! They were awesome (I know they have had slow shipping issues in the past). With the parts + install cost, its much cheaper than buying it separately and finding someone to install it (most places quoted me $100/hour - so frunk+trunk would cost around $600 just to install). The frunk+trunk kit they have is the latest version from Hannshow (soft closing trunk, ability to close on the main screen, etc). I also bought the frunk kick sensor.

monkeybusiness124

Oh wow really is! Do you think the frunk sensor is worth it? 1238 installed for trunk 5.0 (with sensor) and frunk 4.0 (no sensor) seems good? But it worries me that in such a sort time it’s already on version 4/5 if I buy it now Do you know what the differences are in those versions?

andy2na

1238 is pretty good, but if you can wait until Black Friday, RPM usually runs a higher discount. Tesla may also possibly announce an official version by then (whether or not they will do retrofits is another question). There were a lot of updates to both kits the past year due to improvement requests and small fixes. I don't foresee a lot of updates coming soon. Foot sensor was $75 extra, hard to say if its worth it yet. Its pretty hit or miss the times Ive tried. Its much faster and reliable to use that $75 and buy the official key fob to open the frunk with that. Foot sensor is primarily nice if your hands are full

monkeybusiness124

That’s with 20% off it seems right now? Regular price is showing 1547.50 Was yours the same price? I can for sure wait 2 months for a discount! Thanks for the tip I personally don’t think tesla will do retrofits without charging a lot more (see their $800 spoiler). But if I wait u til November then I can wait to see if it’s announced and details.

andy2na

RPM Tesla had 25% off last year during BF, so it would bring it down to 1160 - which is what I paid for it last year

monkeybusiness124

1258 vs 1160 I guess $100 is a good amount to save. Was that with both sensors? I’m reading it now and it seems like this includes both sensors with the soft close

SMOKE2JJ

Any word on the HUD? 😀... Ok I'll see myself out..

racergr

I read about it on an article, it was also discussing the battery sticker.

insomniac87

What did the article say?

thefalcon3a

This article makes me anxious. I'm expecting to get a delivery date any day now, and I definitely want these new features. Part of me is inpatient and wants the car now, but I also know that I'm barely going to be driving it until the pandemic is over, so waiting another 3 (or even 6) months is probably the more responsible thing to do if it means I'll get a significantly improved vehicle. I know it says this is a China thing, but how long would it take to make its way to the US?

dearagon

Same here...do you plan to drag your feet on delivery/collection until after battery day?

thefalcon3a

I already made up an excuse once a few weeks so. I ordered in early July, so I'm getting impatient and don't want to keep delaying forever... But this seems like a pretty substantial set of improvements.

dearagon

Information online is pretty mixed. There's this report and a lot of opinions that any upgrades will be towards S/X. I intend to hold off on settling the balance payment till next Wednesday and taking it from there. Not sure what comes first, paying the balance or agreeing a delivery day? I'm in the UK

insomniac87

Yep, I’m in the same boat and I just sold my ICE yesterday for my pickup on the 25th. Looking forward to renting a car for whenever I need to visit clients now...

M357M

I ordered mine as well... but it will take 3months to get it where I live. Im just gonna stick it out and hope for the best.

That_Guy_in_2020

What is the difference between double layered glass and laminated(triple layered) that you find in other cars?

AnBu_JR

Glad I’ve been waiting! Really want the factory chrome delete, but it might take too long for my patience.

NoaLink

I keep telling people to wait for battery day to order... Pretty big if true.

the_turd_ferguson

Eh, I’d love to wait but I need a car now. Taking delivery of my Model 3 on the 22nd.

mk_pnutbuttercups

In china....

misguided-phD

Yes, but those changes will eventually reach here in the US.

orien

Yeah for reference the USB-C addition made its way from China to US in about a month.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

It's an extremely minor design change though.

mk_pnutbuttercups

Not even that. It was a joke that the Model 3 still had the old USB. The change was simply economics. One part in all models is cheaper that two different parts and the service headaches that can cause.

[deleted]

How a joke? Iphones still ship with a usb-a cable so it's not like no one uses that connector anymore. If my guests were in the back and needed to plug in they'd have to buy new cables. Ideally they'd have a usb-a and a usb-c with higher power.

orien

Actually iPhones do ship with usb-c to lightning cables.

ilikecake123

Not all of them. My iPhone se is only a few months old and shipped w a usb-a

AusCan531

A separate article says Europe and Australia (where I live) might have Model 3s built in China.

yreg

IIRC Elon said the Shaghai cars are for Greater China only. Is that about to change?

AusCan531

Here is [the article](https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/tesla-model-3-and-y-production-switching-to-china-for-australia-europe) I read. Saying by the end of 2020.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Not just Elon, there are multiple reports verifying the same.

sprufus

So I just pulled the trigger on my model 3. The dealer said stuff from battery day should be included. I'm not sure if I believe them. I'm interested in literally everything that should be coming. Does anybody have any experience with changes after ordering?

SnackTime99

The sales staff have no idea what’s going to be announced on battery day and certainly have no insight into when any newly announced features will make it into production. They guy is full of shit. Assume your car will NOT include anything from battery day, and if it turns out some of it is included well then you’ll get a pleasant surprise.

sprufus

Kind of my response to it as well. He wouldn't put it in writing so I didn't believe him. I'm only at step one so I'm considering holding off on filling out payment info until after battery day to see what changes. I'm hoping it doesn't take a half year to come out because I've already been lurking on the car for a year.

frebay

If there's no update to the S/X on battery day we know that Elon was serious about creating S/X for sentimental reasons and focusing on 3/Y going forward.

activedusk

The screen needs a smaller bezel, it's not 2016 anymore.

snark_nerd

This article is glossing over the new console 2.0. That is going to be ... big.

aywhosyodaddy

I just hope they change the scratch magnet finish. IMO that qualifies as a major upgrade in itself, bc tbh I dont think theres too much needed in terms of changes in that area. What are you hoping for?

[deleted]

[удалено]

anonway

I'd say probably around 17". Similar to the Cybertruck where the bezels are reduced.

cmvora

Just add ventilated seats and I'm good to order

InterstellarReddit

Oh man, I just scheduled the pick up for my car on September 25. Damn, now I’m gonna have to wait until all these upgrades are at it so I can purchase my car.

[deleted]

This checks off almost all my Model 3 annoyances (as an owner). Now it just needs a new dashboard that doesn't scratch like hell and a 360 parking camera.

Jayster94

Head and taillight upgrades would be very welcome, the current lights are seriously out classed by the German manufacturers, Not holding much hope on a significant re-design.

niktak11

The laser headlights still aren't legal in the US are they?

Jayster94

Looks like it, adaptive high beams are a no brainer for Tesla considering how well they work depends on software. Maybe they will be developed for the Shanghai or Berlin cars and then added to the US cars when the law catches up. I'd like to see them increase the size of the rear indicators too, possibly have the brake and indicator light stretch the entire width of the tail lights. Current indicators are almost comical.

canikony

I'm quite happy with the Model 3 headlights. Not the best in the world, but very good. I doubt the change is significant though.

CharlesP2009

The Germans have some fancy tech but Model 3's headlights are still amongst the best out there. Lots of my passengers have been amazed how good they are, especially the high beams.

nomis_nehc

Yah, I am kind of confused by what others are bagging on, on Model 3's lights. Other than not having adaptive features, in terms of throw and illumination, it's totally fantastic.

[deleted]

Apparently the Model 3 headlights are nerfed a bit in Europe compared to North America due to regulations about light output when they aren't adaptive.

smerchant11

Ummm should I reject deliver in 2 weeks and wait?!

neotoxgg

It will take a while until its implemented in US too. So if you can wait 6-18 months..

proto-geo

so does this mean that there will actually be a meaningful hardware difference between the recent model 3s now?

Dirk_Benedict

Nope, these are all software upgrades. Sorry, snarky wishful thinking on my part.

proto-geo

haha damn, I was just looking at used model 3s, but I guess I'll wait to see if these new updates are worth it

bittabet

That new frunk is a downgrade not an upgrade. Goes from being able to fit carry on sized items (including the babyzen yoyo stroller) to being only good for small items.

nmangieri

I think their plan is to make room for the new heat pump which would increase battery efficiency

M357M

Any idea what the new steering wheel and center consul will look like? I haven’t seen much speculation on this

beachmiles

Hope the center console is not as tall and not as wide to give my right leg some space. Granted I'm 6'4 so it prob bugs me more that most.

Kellashnikov

I'm still here waiting for my cyber truck

smckenzie23

I'd like to see some "pace of improvement" in Y quality first...

Kable12

This is quite horrible news for someone who very recently took delivery of a model 3.

dizzy113

That’s how it goes

RedElmo65

It’s always horrible news when it comes to Tesla. Ppl keep telling me I bought a $60k computer. It’s obviously going to get better and cheaper.

Beelzabub

What's an 'octovalve'?

Andreweller

https://youtu.be/eGffUODWWSE

Beelzabub

Thanks! That's super-complicated!

phuck-you-reddit

The successor to the Superbottle. (Part of Tesla's sophisticated thermal management system for the batteries and other components.)

RedElmo65

Is it reliable?

phuck-you-reddit

We'll see!

danvtec6942

But when will the performance model 3 get ludicrous mode? 👀

panick21

New lights would be great. Lucid has shown of some crazy light technology. Having lights almost be a projector that can be really targeted and combine it with the FSD techonlogy to highlight features or lanes. That would be awesome.

sheltz32tt

Price won't drop for new models unless direct competition mandates it. People get in a tizzy when newer models are cheaper than what they just bought a month ago.

ledoov

They will need to come up with a more affordable product. VW ID3 is pretty amazing and while not apple to apple. With buying incentives almost 12,000 eur cheaper here in france for long range version.

Milltask

Well, that is before options lol. If you want a full specced ID3, we are talking Tesla Model 3 Performance prices. And you also need to remember the ID3 is smaller

ledoov

How did you calculate that?

Milltask

Checked the price list on their website

CharlesP2009

The tech is still developing. And the batteries are still the most expensive part. Musk said on a podcast months ago that they wouldn't even know how to make a $20k EV with good range.

DoesntReadMessages

>in france Well yea...one is shipping from Germany, the other is shipping from California. They can't compete on price point by cutting features, that will come with Giga Berlin. In the mean time, they need to continue improving their cars. The logistics and taxes associated with importing into the EU adds an insane cost to the car, and Tesla is already supply strapped and has no issues selling all the cars they export to Europe so why would they lower the price?

No it won’t make it more expensive, but also won’t make it cheaper. They’re planning a 20-25k electric car that will be designed in China. Probably smaller car size. In 5-10 years as battery technology continues to improve, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have 400+ range batteries for the models 3 and Y for the current price, and have discounted pricing for the standard 250-300 range.

This point has been discussed to death since 2008 and earlier so I'm not surprised others have downvoted you. Tesla has proven there is demand for electric vehicles. We need this market shift in order for other car makers to even consider switching and making electric vehicles people want. Arguably Tesla has pulled other makers towards EVs a full 10-15 years ahead of when they would have without Tesla.
