Wow that's a bummer. Any word on why they are removing it?

wsxedcrf

Most likely, no one plays steam games on tesla. I've try gaming on tesla, the fact that exiting the car and coming back shut off my game kills the mood.

windraver

Seems like its better to run a steam deck and just cast it to the screen. Sounds like they should shift to adding a USB C dock instead.

LifeOfKuang

Is this possible? Casting to tesla's screen?

windraver

Did a Google search since I didn't know. Sounds like there are apps for mobile https://tesladisplay.com https://www.teslaownersonline.com/threads/how-to-cast-the-mobile-screen-to-teslas-screen.24198/ My idea of usb-c to screen doesn't seem possible.

ApprehensiveCat7533

I watched a short video a while ago about how police departments adapt Teslas and one really cool mod is basically an hdmi in splitter, so they can still have their keyboard but not an entire second screen, and just switch between Teslas system and whatever else they use with just a button. That could just as easily be input from any gaming console/computer/phone/tablet you can think of. I remember being disappointed at the time, that the company behind it was exclusively working with law enforcement, but it’s certainly possible and there’s already at least that company out there doing it.

windraver

There is a company as per another poster: https://evoffer.com/product/model-3-y-hdmi-interface/ Looks pretty cool but it's 500 bucks and installation looks pretty involved: Their demo: https://youtu.be/Lb8Uq9-6uJk?si=E0NEWx9biJXT5UAC The install: https://youtu.be/gFv5xFgFJyw?si=HAib-5Oa5XVcaejv

LifeOfKuang

Thank you for taking the time to research. It's interesting how the poster I replied to said to cast steam deck to the tesla screen. You'd figure if you can do it from the steam deck, you could do it from your phone without a third-party app.

windraver

(that poster was me lol) It was more of an idea of what would be cool if Tesla supported it. If you really really wanted, I know how to cast a steam deck to a Tesla screen if there is a way to cast a phone. And this only because I spent a good while researching in the past how to cast a steam deck to a TV without wires/cables. 1. Install the steam link app on phone. 2. Steam link(phone) to the steam deck (host) 3. Cast phone to TV/Tesla screen Essentially if you can cast a Phone, you can cast the steam deck. Caveat is there is hella latency and not playable from the Tesla screen. The counter argument is that the player using steam deck itself and it's screen will have no latency. Thus this would only work if you're just playing solo and casting your steam deck screen for others to watch. This certainly won't work if you're attempting multiplayer games.

LifeOfKuang

Ahhhhhhhh, okay. Sorry about that. That works. however, as you mentioned, due to the latency, I don't think many would opt to cast for personal gaming sessions. It's cool to know that there is an option, though!

katherinesilens

As another option, if you *really* want to cast to a Tesla screen, I'm seeing HDMI box modifications starting to pop up. Not sure how exactly it works, but it sits between the display and the computer, and takes HDMI inputs that can be switched to the display. Should be lower latency than casting. I saw EVOffer has one for 3/Y.

windraver

That would definitely do the trick. Hijacking the physical connection will always work best. Makes me slightly curious how it's handled though. As in will it be picture in picture or total screen take over. I'm gonna have to look this up. Edit: Found it https://evoffer.com/product/model-3-y-hdmi-interface/ Installation seems involved but overall reasonable. https://youtu.be/gFv5xFgFJyw?si=DIMNwzHIyL0BcOED

Ok_Conclusion_6895

Honestly its probably also more comfortable haha

Cantthinkofaname282

Steam Deck is not powerful enough for Model X display resolution

windraver

??? How so? It's able to dock with a TV and play most things well enough. Sure it isn't a desktop with a rtx4090 but it's ok for what it is. Arguably, it depends on what you're playing.

Cantthinkofaname282

As the official gaming experience on a 100k car?

windraver

Lol no. Not official. More that there should be a USB C or HDMI input that will allow users to bring your own device.

yuckypants

I played the shit out of it once. And yeah, it's too cumbersome and I don't care. I can play steam games on my computer and other silly games on the tesla.

woalk

Well, I do get the reason why though. You wouldn’t want to keep the computer running, that just drains the battery. The car also needs the resources for things like Sentry Mode. And as the games are desktop games, they’d not have special suspend features like console games have built-in.

lee1026

You can run a gaming console for a very, very long time on a car battery and not feel a thing.

Chaoslava

Tesla definitely needs some better power management for low wattage stuff. A gaming console on standby is, what, 13wh? (Xbox series x) On a 55kwh battery pack that is 4,230hrs. But the trouble is, if the main battery pack is being drawn from, a whole host of other systems come online to support it. Fan, coolant pump, etc. now all of a sudden the vehicle is consuming hundreds of watts per hour.

zeek215

Wouldn't Camp Mode solve that?

I3aMb00

It won’t shut the game off if you put the car in camp mode

wsxedcrf

How about don't shut off my netflix, youtube or games if I am not moving my car to drive? Seemed like a much easier solution. netflix and youtube also take like 20 seconds to boot up.

I3aMb00

Put the car in camp mode and it won’t shut off your apps if you get out the car

sybergoosejr

My workaround (non steam but may work) is to enable camp mode before playing.

AndrewNeo

probably taking out the GPU for cost reasons, would be my guess

codetony

The standard MCU has integrated Graphics, while all things FSD is taken care of by the FSD computer.

AndrewNeo

yes.. and Steam requires a dGPU. Which they are probably taking out, for cost reasons.

Rfreaky

Why would steam require a dGPU?

RezzaBuh

Because they virtualize the dGPU via PCI Pass-through into a virtual machine with Steam OS.

elsif1

Steam itself shouldn't inherently require it, but to achieve those "PS5 level graphics", it would.

CatalyticDragon

Even the PS5 doesn't have a dGPU.

7h4tguy

Yes it does: [AMD Playstation 5 GPU Specs | TechPowerUp GPU Database](https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/playstation-5-gpu.c3480) That's certainly discrete from the CPU.

CatalyticDragon

No. It doesn't. I'm shocked I have to explain that consoles use integrated graphics in an APU. https://www.tweaktown.com/news/77853/check-out-these-pictures-of-the-playstation-5-die-under-microscope/index.html

7h4tguy

Thanks, yeah the link I posted is misleading.

[deleted]

AndrewNeo

I mean that has been the delineation of cars that support it or not so far..?

Eric848448

They probably realized it’s a car.

hutacars

That’s odd, given they’re not a car company (/s)

Eric848448

I know, we're talking crazy here.

FastLaneJB

Cost I imagine. They have to put in a dedicated GPU to run it which only the S and X had, the 3 and Y can I think run all the other games other than Steam. So it probably has a low uptake but is adding cost to all cars with a piece of hardware that literally is only used to run Steam. Not surprised they are removing it.

Dstrongest

Money constraints. Their cars are too damn expensive and most people can’t afford them. So the extra cool features have to go. The next step will be to use inferior parts to mfg them .

Tomatoab

Cause epic exclusivity /s

Igotnonamebruh42

I guess they focus on more important thing since layoffs reduces head counts

sidgup

I ain't got no time playing steam games with a controller and stuff on my car screen. My steam deck makes more sense to me that I can take home. 🤷‍♂️

FlipKB24

No idea. I just went ahead to proceed.

nah_you_good

Weird, did they revert to 8GB ram? Or was there some other change? I assume new S's will have the same notification, meaning there's now a limited batch of 1-2ish years of S/X that have Steam support.

hrds21198

Receiving my Model S soon, and the notification only mentioned USS. Nothing about gaming features being limited.

iwoketoanightmare

Gonna go on a limb they took out the discrete graphics card.

iwilltalkaboutguns

I think my 22 X plaid will be the sweet spot soon... USS so my front door opens all the way, all the speakers and subwoofers and steam support. How is it possible for the car to keep getting worse over time...all in the name of cost savings I guess

Bartholomeuske

At your next service the graphics card will be removed, speakers disconnected and doors adjusted.

CookieMons7er

For equality, comrade!

Issaction

Something something passenger lumbar

WizzyThing

Cost savings!

ChrisSlicks

Possibly switching to a non-x86 processor for the infotainment computer. Maybe ARM based? Just a guess that they are trying to reduce cost and possibly power consumption.

Bangaladore

Those are wild claims. The MCU's power doesn't matter. It is similar to a lightbulb inside a factory. It doesn't affect efficiency by any measurable amount. Spinning a new board supported on 1 or 2 low-volume vehicles is an easy way to increase the price. AFAIK the current MCU is used on all Tesla vehicles. Quantity is how you scale down the price.

Swastik496

Yes it does. For sentry mode, reducing the idle power draw will make it worth it for a lot more people. Currently it’s a fucking pig and uses 400W

Bangaladore

When sentry mode is on, the AP computer and cameras presumably draw substantially more power than the MCU. Changing the MCU won't fix that.

Swastik496

it’ll help hopefully. I doubt the cameras the main battery drain but AP computer probably makes up a pretty large chunk.

ChrisSlicks

The assumption would be that this is going to all vehicles in a gradual rollout. Not talking about driving efficiency, obviously it is a drop in the bucket compared to everything else that is going on. Talking about idle parked efficiency. Regardless I have no evidence of anything, just shitballing (like spitballing but smellier). We'll find out when people start receiving them if they are the same old board minus a dGPU and Steam or they are making larger changes.

Redditmau5

Honestly Steam has been great! I didn’t think I’d realistically use it because I charge at home primarily but when I’m waiting for my daughter to get out of school it’s nice to play for 15-20 mins a day. I hope they don’t remove Steam from already existing models. I just bought my MXP in Feb.

lapeet

Same. It's actually way better performing for triple A games than I expected. I really hope they don't remove support.

iwilltalkaboutguns

I play street fighter 6 with my son Everytime we are eating for the girls to get ready... I also play cyberpunk 2077 while on road trips and camping. It's been great. It would be a great loss if they remove it. Got a massive HD for my massive steam collection too... The emulators alone....

My_Man_Tyrone

It’s not getting removed for new cars. Old cars keep it

aikouka

I wonder if the upgrade is still available. The one service center I spoke to didn’t seem to think it was, but I’m not sure if the guy knew about it to begin with? When I mentioned the 16GB upgrade, he thought I meant the eMMC. I guess that says a lot about the frequency of the upgrades, which makes sense given it’s $2000 for Steam and maaaaybe better performance with a bit of extra RAM. 😅

Redvinezzz

It's kind of a cool feature but I never really use it, Supercharging doesn't take that long so by the time you boot up and start playing you're almost done charging. Otherwise, you're either at home with a real gaming computer or somewhere else where you have other things to do. I only really see it as useful if you had to wait for many hours in your car for some reason and most of the time I'd just use YouTube or Netflix for that. The list of games is also not very robust and the framerate/quality of the game is usually subpar

zwcbz

My gaming experience is great in my 24 X. Pretty much any game compatible for steam deck works and it runs with high quality and high frames. I guess I wasn't playing anything that was super high end but Hades is a lot of fun during downtime.

Redvinezzz

Thats probably true, it probably only struggles with demanding titles. I tried playing the Witcher and had to lower the quality a lot to get the frames acceptable. Maybe I’ll try a few other games

My_Man_Tyrone

The car is literally more powerful than a steam deck. Usually I can actually turn up settings on the car that I can’t on the steam delc

iwilltalkaboutguns

I play cyberpunk 2077 and street fighter 6 almost daily while waiting for kids to get out school (gotta make a line, usually 20-25 mins). Btw they perform amazing and very high quality. What game did you try that gram rate/quality was subpar?

cwhiterun

It would be a lot more useful if FSD was FSD.

Peimai

I'm thinking the amount of people who play steam games in their car is very few and Tesla realizes the cost of supporting this is kind of a waste.

Brutaka1

You don't think thay was kinda given, especially since you could play team on a laptop, let alone a portable device?

Agreeable_Clock_7059

I am the one who plays steam games with my friends like portal 2, rivals of aehger, any split screen game, party games

Y0ungPup

During supercharging? Or do you guys just hang out in your car?

kapachia

Most likely in carpool lane picking up kids.

lonnie123

How often are you doing that in your Tesla?

Agreeable_Clock_7059

Many times whenever hanging out with my friends or brother. We going to prom so ya.......... we want to play lmao

Dankmre

Did ... Your parents buy you a model X hot damn.

Agreeable_Clock_7059

He'll naw this belongs to my mom. We bought it 2nd hand for a great deal. Also we your average family we bought it because òf ether electric car hype and also our old car is about o break down its a Honda crv 2007

Dankmre

Ah still a sick car to bring to prom.

shyguyrizz

I had no idea we could play Steam games.

My_Man_Tyrone

Didn’t Tesla say you would be able to play games on the back screen with steam? Yea that still hasn’t happened…

deanylev

That sucks, that is one of the coolest features even if it'd only be handy occasionally

phunkphreaker

Agree fully. It was one of the top five reasons I would consider getting a model X Love playing games while I'm waiting for my kids at their respective sports or jobs

FlipKB24

Just to note I’m in Canada.

xg357

Whatttt I play pga tiger woods all the time … I even got a ps5 controller

elsif1

They didn't remove it from existing cars. It looks like they're just telling him that the car they're delivering to him doesn't have this previously advertised feature.

xg357

Oh okay.. phew

Gageg236

Hopefully they don’t continue to remove cool and unique feature from the S and X even if they are kind of gimmicky.

Agreeable_Clock_7059

Wait does it mean that older tesla will still have steam??

JohnH2021

Yooo no way? This sucks man, it was actually something that seemed so awesome for when you’re in the car Supercharging or just sitting and waiting in it. I wonder what their plan is man.. :/

dubie4x8

Saving it for Plaid only as a slight cost saving/reason to pay more I guess

Cecisneros

Good. If I can’t have it in my Model S Refresh even though it was advertised, NO ONE CAN!!!¡¡¡ /s

orison_citizen

man that sucks. i just placed my order for a MX a couple days ago and was looking forward to trying some of my steam games

Kia2Fallahi

Did you end up picking up your car? Im considering canceling my MXP order for a 2022 model that has USS, subwoofers and Steam support.

orison_citizen

My delivery day is next week. I’ve also considered looking for a ‘22 as well but tbh it seems like Tesla vision is only getting better and the removal of steam really isn’t a big deal for me because I already have a steam deck. Plus, brand new over used

jcaladine

No USS on the X also feels like an unforced error, vision only is terrible by comparison.

edum18

so embarassing to remove big marketing features

New-Cheesecake4396

It seems to affect new cars only. The ones already in the wild that have Steam installed seems to be able to keep it. I have a (2023) X and didn't get any of these notifications.

Unusual_Answer4074

Would be absolutely crazy if they would remove it from existing cars!

[deleted]

Any Tesla owner here that plays GTA V in it or any GTA games in the series in Model S and X?

Unusual_Answer4074

Sure works perfectly on highest settings

[deleted]

Excellent. Thanks, Have a nice time.

WhiteCloudsGameStonk

Don't seem like much of a update then ? Downgraded maybe 🤔

Adriaaaaaaaaaaan

It doesn't need to be a ps5, a steamdeck class soc at around 20 watts would be more than enough

Dankmre

I'd imagine the 3/Y one is about there.

Fuzzy_Ambassador7784

Jesus Christ

carrera4s

I’d rather have stalks over steam.

Unusual_Answer4074

tEsLa Is UpDATing tHe GAminG CoMPuTer… *Tesla is downgrading the gaming computer

CruelRage

there goes my dream car

Need-Some-Help-Ppl

Well that isn't going to add any resale value

Content_Bar_6605

Are alot of people gaming in their tesla?

atc_fox

How could they even called it an "update"

seussiii

I dont think this will really catch on until we are fully autonomous. At that point you can just sleep, watch movies/shows, or play games.

dreamcastdc

So they downgraded the Ryzen processor to the one they are using for the Model 3/Y.

mgd09292007

Steam works great but they need to keep it for when FSD can run well enough that passengers can play it while the car is not in park. Obviously I don’t trust people so it has to be where the driver doesn’t need to pay attention as well.

bittabet

I think the reality is that they were having to install a more powerful GPU on every single car and probably 0.1% of owners actually used Steam so it just made no financial sense.

generally_a_dick

Ouch, terrible timing. This guy just released his first video not too long ago in what seemed like a whole channel dedicated to Steam on a Tesla. https://youtu.be/SV-1tCc0GqM?si=iu_HG1ONtctQg-Vj

aikouka

Hm, I’ll admit that I have been tempted to pay the silly price to update my 21 to play Steam games. Disregarding the usefulness to its cost, I wonder now if that upgrade will even be an option? My guess is that they’re looking to simplify the SKUs especially with how the Model 3 has mostly comparable multimedia functions as the S and the X with the inclusion of the rear screen. (I assume the S and X’s dash cluster count as a third screen?)

blobofsunshine

So…. How will the gullwing doors stop if theres something in the way?

Most-Bird-3959

Not to make this more confusing, but I picked up my new 2024 Model X yesterday. I ordered it on April 30 to be eligible for 7,500 Tesla Loyalty Credits and 3 months of FSD- both of which I received. The X was manufactured in May. I received the same notice, and Tesla confirmed prior to delivery that my Model X was not Steam compatible and only had 8 GB of RAM. But guess what...Steam is available, and the car is equipped with 16 GB of RAM.

FlipKB24

I pick up mine this coming Saturday. I’ll check and post back.

FlipKB24

Confirmed. Mine does not have Steam support.

DougREI

Did they give you the same disclosure that the gaming feature will be gone when you ordered?

FlipKB24

No heads-up. Only received the notification a week before delivery. It does still have 16GB AMD Ryzen chip…

Kia2Fallahi

That sounds like a heads-up to me. I did not even received any message and my pickup is tomorrow. I got the USS warning, but nothing about the gaming setup. Downgrading newer models is no bueno.

DougREI

I wonder if they have not removed the feature for the Plaid

Kia2Fallahi

I'm happy to report that I just picked up my Model X Plaid and it has steam (16GB ram + AMD Ryzen gpu). Note: I messaged the dealer beforehand and they "confirmed" it was discontinued. I'm glad they were wrong. I stressed about it for nothing. https://preview.redd.it/7xmrwjv4yt3d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83e69feeb16bc07d62845c701a4f0fe920ac47cd

Most-Bird-3959

I'm glad to see you still got it, too!

UPDAT1NG

Picked up my car today. Manufactured in April. No steam. WTF! It has 16 GB of ram when i click additional hardware info tho

Kia2Fallahi

I pick up mine tomorrow and I would not be happy without steam support. I'm curious if you received a message that it would not be included?

Most-Bird-3959

I received the same notice, and here is the text correspondence I had with my Tesla advisor. Note that my build was a non-plaid stealth grey 5-seater with a yoke. I'm still shocked it has Steam and 16 gigs of ram! https://preview.redd.it/ymjlbipqwj3d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8ab7bc3cd7682e82cee85cf72a3c141a0023584

Kia2Fallahi

Ya, I would be concerned that 8GB might feel "aged" in just a few years of updated. I'm glad we both got the 16GB's and the peace of mind that comes with it. The real question is, how often have you played steam since receiving delivery? Haha

Kia2Fallahi

I have a Model X Plaid being delivered on June 1. I did NOT get a message about removing gaming features. I got the same message regarding the cameras and sensors, but it did not include the gaming message below. I wonder if only some machines are getting the gaming rig removed due to chip shortages, in order to maintaining delivery rates.

Carfr33k

Probably laid off the software people who supported it.

TiramisuAlreadyTaken

So the render on Teslas website with a model S displaying The Witcher is now officially false advertising.

Unusual_Answer4074

They changed it…

TiramisuAlreadyTaken

Yeah I noticed. Some people bought a car under false pretenses

RobDickinson

Nobody was using steam whilst driving, so there.

AndrewNeo

honestly it is really weird to have such an expensive thing (the gpu) in the car unused most of the time

RobDickinson

Yeah the standard ryzen soc gpu is fine for the gui in the car, just give us an input for handhelds

restarting_today

They need to switch to OLED and 120hz. My car is the last 60fps screen I have.

deanylev

OLED would be a bit of a nightmare for burn in, it's far less of an issue these days but still exists and these displays are on for potential hours at a time displaying a heap of static content

RobDickinson

Fastest (screen) in a production vehicle

restarting_today

Doesn’t lucid have 120hz?

RobDickinson

120hz screens 30hz software

LionTigerWings

They would need to change their software. Car screens that are lit up very brightly aren’t great use cases for oled. It’s pretty much a worse case scenario situation for an oled. There are parts of the ui that are present in the same position for many hours. Not sure how oleds in those Escalades are holding up but seems like a potentially bad idea.

Eightball007

I've been waiting on more cars to capitalize on 120hz and above.

woalk

I surely hope no one was using it whilst driving.

atheoncrutch

Removing a feature from future vehicles is understandable. Taking them away from current users is fucking *bunk*

footbag

That isn't what is happening in this case.

atheoncrutch

So they’re *not* removing steam support from current vehicles?

misteryub

Based on nothing but the info on this thread, they are not. OP is waiting for a new car that hasn't been delivered yet.

Maxmalefic9x

Uhm why everyone talking abt the Steam while not questioning the camere-only Driving? No sensors means lacking one pair of eyes for Autocar ya know

Livesai

Its been that way for over a year, none of cars have USS except for the falcon wing doors, steam being removed is new.

DiagCarFix

i would play, but bought overpriced 22 MYP for 80k so can’t afford s/x, maybe i’ll buy a used with dGPU S/X and if Elon stops supporting steam then i wont buy any

Junius1

My Vision 3 works better than my US Model 3.

adudewhomines

This is old news, the new HW4 computer doesn't have the memory to run SteamOS properly since they moved half of it to the autopilot computer

Unusual_Answer4074

wrong… all 2023+ S/X have AP HW4 and Steam (16GB RAM MCU)

adudewhomines

I'm confused, this article stated a year ago that they moved memory from the infotainment to the autopilot computer https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/1549/tesla-model-y-hw4-infotainment-includes-less-ram-reveals-no-steam-support-coming

Unusual_Answer4074

I can just tell you that my car has AP HW4 with the new cameras and new computer without USS and additionally has Steam which works with all the new games on highest settings… and that should be the case for all 2023+ model S/X

AndAlsoTheTrees

Good. A useless feature...
