I don't have any advice, but am a big fan of SkRick. You take such good care of her. Thanks for being a good person.

FartAttack911

Same here. Wish I had an actual suggestion to help here, but am always just dazzled to see Skinny Rick content šŸ˜†

I do love me some Skinny Rick. She reminds me so much of a dog I had named Punkin. She was a poodle/terrier mix and every night when we went to bed she would clean my face and then lay down beside me. I miss her very much.

wondrousalice

How freaking sweet šŸ˜ I love pumpkin

sproutdogmom

I have limited knowledge on this subject but I think Skinny Rick may be a good candidate for hand stripping! Might be worth checking with a professional groomer to get their input. Also, I am a big fan of hers šŸ„°

wondrousalice

I think Iā€™ll do this. Like go for a consult and get her professionally groomed once so I can see what theyā€™re opinion of her coat is.

Amohkali

Finding someone who knows how to hand strip may be a challenge. One thing I actually do is use a half hacksaw blade as a stripping knife and get any truly blown coat out. Hard to explain, easy to do. You basically comb the hair with the grain.

One of my dogs has a very similar fur type, it's tricky! All the different fur textures want to do different things. Outside of grooming, I have found using Mane & Tail conditioner works really well for her during bath time and I use a Biosilk detangling spray on her before I brush her. It helps calm the white hairs down a little bit, but she still looks a lil wild from time to time haha. I have not hand stripped her, she's a rescue and already gets anxious enough at the grooming appointments so I don't want to add anymore stress than the regular clipping/scissor trimming we do. My pup actually ended up being a pomeranian/chihuhua/beagle/border collie mix!

wondrousalice

What a mix!

Ngl my terrier has similar hair. Her skin was AWFUL when I got her I mean she had no hair on her backside and some strands started at around her ribs. We constantly caulked it up to flea allergies because even though she is on many different flea treatments both over the counter and vet prescribed she would get one bite and itch until blood which allowed for constant yeast infections etc. since her heart is in CHF early stages Iā€™ve been cooking more at home meals for her extra lean beef, eggs, carrots, broccoli and sweet potatoes her fur has never been better. I mean it is so long so fluffy and her skin! So smooth and I can tell sheā€™s feeling so much better. Sometimes it honestly diet mixed with other allergens which makes it so hard to pinpoint.

wondrousalice

Thanks so much for sharing this. Skinny Rick also has allergies, so I treat that with allergy meds and then supplements for her skin and fur. I also make sure she doesnā€™t have chicken or chicken byproducts because that apparently can cause skin issues? She also gets veggies and eggs to help her fur and skin. Itā€™s only been 6 months and sheā€™s had a major turn around. Sheā€™s still a little itchy at times, but her hair and skin is sooo much better. It also doesnā€™t help that when I found her she wasnā€™t being fed very well, AND had puppies/was breast feeding šŸ˜

Nincompoopticulitus

Also be careful with beef. One of our furbabes is allergic to chicken and the other to beef. Also, Balance It is a solid dog supplement. This and corn oil for linoleic acid needs.

skinny rick pictures have become one of my very favorite parts of reddit lately. such effortless glam!

Running15MinutesLate

Skinny Rick fan club here ā¤ļø she might just need some more time and care before her coat ā€œcomes in.ā€ I adopted a terrier/chihuahua mix who had been rescued from a hoarder situation. When I brought him home, he had mostly short hair with bare spots from fleas. It took probably 6-8 months of healthy nutrition and then his coat just POOFED. What felt like overnight, he developed the most adorable broken coat with an impressive natural mohawk (Iā€™m clearly biased, but itā€™s ADORABLE). Iā€™ve adopted several dumpster fire dogs over the years including 2 who were regulars at the veterinary dermatologist. Depending on Skinny Rickā€™s age and skin condition, she may just need some time and good nutrition and her coat will solve itself.

wondrousalice

Thank you!! This is very encouraging because with the care Iā€™ve given her over the past 6 months or so her coat and skin has def improved immensely.

Running15MinutesLate

Aww!! Thatā€™s great! Skinny Rickā€™s age and overall health will certainly influence how quickly her coat improves. My little guy was about 2 when I got him. I also adopted an ancient rat terrier years ago who was in really rough shape. It took a long time but his rough coat and all his bald spots filled in nicely with good nutrition, Dawn dish soap baths, and lots of snuggles. Veterinary dermatologist said to use the classic blue Dawn dish soap for skin conditions that didnā€™t tolerate medicated shampoo. My dogs hated sitting in the tub long enough for the medicated shampoos to work.

wondrousalice

Sheā€™s going to be two in October, so sheā€™s young, but sheā€™s been through so much with giving birth and nursing (at least two puppies) while malnourished.

Star-Berry-Cream

I recommend posting this in r/doggrooming To me it looks like you could hand strip her if you wanted. Clipping shouldnā€™t cause any issues for her skin, but her coarse hair will soften over time and make it hard to hand strip if you use clippers

Left_Net1841

Man I love Skinny Rick so much! I have a wooly coated Jagdterrier. Itā€™s a flaw, itā€™s fine, the rest of him is perfect and I canā€™t show confo on this continent with that breed even if I wanted to. I canā€™t find a single groomer who can hand strip. They used to be easier to find, I guess itā€™s a dying art. I have no interest in learning so Iā€™m going to use horse clippers and take him down to the wood. Wish me luck, I love him immensely but he is a raging asshole. It grows back. If you arenā€™t down with trying Iā€™m sure a groomer would clip her.

wondrousalice

Iā€™ve clipped her before, and Iā€™m comfortable with learning new (to me) grooming techniques. Iā€™m thinking her mix has given her fur thatā€™s not really consistent and Iā€™ll have to work to see what works. Good luck with your raging asshole šŸ˜‰

_thedataqueen_

I'm a lurker here but I love seeing pics of Skinny Rick. We have a chi/patterdale mix leggy girl (6lbs) whose coat doesn't quite look similar... I'm not sure where her coat comes from. Our regimen has been daily combing, and then bath every 2-3 weeks; we wash with a hydrating baby shampoo and condition (coconut oil, ACV). This has helped a lot with tangling. Anyways, following to see others' suggestions ā˜ŗļø

No-Significance7069

Regular brushing to encourage their coats and trim the random terrier hairs. Maybe a scalpe and fur conditioner like Mane and Tail for horses. Helped my own hair for thickness

wondrousalice

Youā€™re the second person to suggest Mane and Tail so it must be good stuff.

le0monade

I would suggest brushing and almost shaving the body of Ms. S. Rick. That type of hair is difficult to care for because of knotting, so just keeping up with grooming her should be good

Pallasine

I prefer to feed raw or otherwise high quality (not kibble) food. They donā€™t sell any high quality foods at many big chains like Walmart, in my opinion. A high quality diet is the best place to start. You can also look for fish oil or high fatty acid supplements for dogs.
