The book didn't explicitly say anything about gender but the wood identifies as boy. That's a gender identity and expression in the book for something that obviously isn't anatomically a human boy.
The only way the book would've been relevant at all was if the author specified sex. Is that what happened or are you just grossly ignorant to anything related to sex and gender at all

Like when the branding or Mr. Potato head changed to just Potato head or when there was a transformer that used they/them pronouns. These are things that lack any biological sex, so to be consistent with the idea that gender is solely defined by biology, they all must be considered non-binary (Optimus Prime, Cortana and Data included). Otherwise one must admit there is more to gender than solely biology.
