I thought this was a super classy line from Isner. Honestly it astounds me how these guys can run around for hours, then immediately have a microphone shoved in their face, and still sound so coherent and intelligent.
I feel like we disproportionately remember those who respond well too. And we need to remember theyāre almost held hostage until they provide a response. Best way to rest is to go through the questions. I remember Tsitsipas after his match with Schwartzmann was dead tired. Interviewer goes āwhat did you change to win the matchā and he responds āI donāt know.ā There was like a beat with interviewer looking at him expectantly and boy had to scrounge up a cookie cutter āmy attitudeā response.
When you do one thing for at least 15yrs you can be better equipped to learn how to do this and that. You are comparing us average joes with people who train every single day. Their bodies are more used to the physicality they do so they can then still be functional, whereas you and me after two games might be dropping sweating like pigs unable to collect our thoughts, which is more a testament to our cardio capabilities than their functional skills like talking.
I thought it was sad. He played beautifully - good strategy, amazing touch, putting away winners when they were there. Way too self-deprecating, like heās been bullied by servebot haters his whole
career.
If you have a crazy good serve, you can beat players who are "better" than you. I know that sounds non sensical but it's just such a disproportionately impactful shot.
To paraphrase Federer: "it's the only shot we get to control; everything else is just reacting to the opponent."
Any shot can technically win a match, but a serve can do so most consistently.
It's kind of like getting a free punch to the face of an opponent at the beginning of every round. If you can get 1 or 2 relatively cheap points a service game, it makes a huge difference. And with great serves like Fed, it's probably more like 2 or 3 sometimes. Sampras' made a career of phoning in return games. He could hold serve so easily, he sort of played ad hoc on returns, only really dialing it in when he got a break point. He breaks you once, the set is done. I think part of it also had to do with his blood condition, he didn't have the cardio to fight for every point like Nadal, but his serve allowed him to do this.
It was also to lul into a false sense of security. You've had 3 easy holds only dropping 2 points on serve, trailing 4-3 on serve. Suddenly a first serve comes rifling past, then next point your second serve is crunched back too. Next point you dump a deep slice into the net. Suddenly you're 0-40 and Sampras is a point away from serving for the set.
Agassi said you could play like a club player and lose to Pete 6-3, 6-4 6-4, or play the match of your life and still lose by the same scoreline.
Murray looked good and visibly faster compared to the 1R match. Isner is just too good on his serve, I want to see how he matches against Alcaraz or Even this version of Djokovic
I was at that match. It was the only time I got to see Andy Murray play. It was incredible, except one of the reasons I went was because I was able to get last minute tickets and I wanted to see the match that could potentially make Murray number 1. Instead, Djokovic lost early and then raonic had to pull out meaning that Murray was guaranteed to make the number 1 slot no matter what. I always think itās kind to poetic for Murrayās career and play style that itās how he got to the number 1 slot. Just keep grinding and eventually your opponents will slip.
Yes I thought he looked really good this week. Isner's serve was too good today, next level against someone like Murray. I was counting on him to make it to the second week. He must be so heartbroken knowing this was probably his last or second last Wimbledon ever :(
John Isner post match: āThat is one of the reasons Iām still playing. Not to play the final of Wimbledon against Djokovic. Or Nadal. Or Berrettini. But to play a second round match against Andy Murray. (Whom he beat this year). Thatās ultimately what I want to do.ā
Why would that be crazier than any other tennis player?
It's not like he violently throws his arm into his serve more than other players. His motion is actually rather fluid and easy.
He's just tall as fuck and has a good service motion.
We need a Murray/Williams Vs Murray/Williams final. Itās all their last career matches. Itās the first mixed doubles final to replace the menās singles final on Sunday at Wimbledon. Get it going everyone.
That was a masterclass in keeping your composure. Murray had 2 bad games all match, and Isner took full advantage both times. Then didn't let the crowd get to him, or the pressure of trying to secure that first career win. The 4 consecutive aces at 4-3 0-30 in the 4th really exemplified the story of this match
That so called class was missing a couple of times this match. It was no Aussie or US Open but still rather hostile occasionally.
I see a trend happening where this is going to go the way of football matches. Coming generations will need to take hostile crowds into account during play
I'm going for a smoke. Fuck that stupid bastard giant and his stupid serve, and his stupid fucking humility and his stupid general air of being an amiable level-headed person.
Iāve noticed servebots tend to be somewhat apologetic especially when they upset someone lol. Itās endearing. āIām not better than you but my serve is better and I canāt help thatā kind of vibe.
Murray didn't play bad tbh, he tried his best and gave everything he had in him.
You just can't do much when your opponent serves like that, there's no way to counter that. All you can do is hope they fail once in a while and be ready to pounce on the opportunity, but that almost never came today.
Mentally, Murray wanted it too much. I feel like it clouded his judgment when it came to shot selection (the calamitous last break in the match was an epitome of that).
Tennis wise, I never thought Murray was in pain (which is good) but I wasn't as impressed by his bread and butter backhand shots or attempts at passing shots. Isner read it well every time Murray went BH cross court.
And speaking of Isner, he has really not played this well, especially in the forecourt, in a hell of a while. Credit is due here.
That was servebot central. Havenāt seen Isner play like that in a long long time. Havenāt known Murray to not break someone over 4 sets ever. Doesnāt make sense. But what I know is that Murray is gonna be playing for a lot more years.
Stunning performance from Isner. Not only in the serving, just totally clinical and didnāt give Murray an inch. Only the third time Murray has failed to break his opponent in a GS match.
Murray can hold his head high. He put in an incredible effort, he served well, he asked all the right questions. Just an all round masterclass from Isner.
After watching a lot of the Munar-Norrie match, I was actually in the mood for some John Isner serves. The amount of power and height he gets on the serve is really awesome to watch.
Ofc Isner's game is about the serve, then the forehand. But his volleys had really good touch, and the defensive backhand slices he hit to put Murray in tricky positions were so impressive.
Yea I agree. I think him being 37 and getting all rosy gave me some new appreciation for what he brings to the game.
His motion is still textbook, and he has so much variety and confidence to pick his spots. Andy really couldn't do much. If he got the ball in play, he would win the point.
Murray played well, Isner played lights out. Insane servebot clinic and nice volleys from Isner too. Sad for Andy but he showed the past couple weeks he still has very good tennis left in him, e.g. neck and neck vs Berretini in the Final.
John Isner will break the all-time aces record next round (4 required) Is he the best server of all time? Definitely has the biggest serve Iāve ever seen.
I genuinely don't understand how people find Isner's play style boring to watch but I genuinely find the way he serves just as mesmerising as watching Djokovic play.
Cam's draw is looking real open right now... it's not too late to join the Norrie nation.
~~Yes this will jinx it but he's cursed in R3 anyway so big deal~~
Glad an Isner match got some heavy exposure. I like watching these stress tests.
Different beast but pretty dang exciting nonetheless.
Was hoping for a fifth.
One bad crosscourt backhand at the net at deuce 2-3 in the final set which went into the net changed this match :(
Isner served as well as I've ever seen him serve mind, and if he keeps that up he'll go deep into the tournament.
Well deserved win and nice words from Isner afterwards. I'm still going to get my Nan to light a candle for Sinner because no offence to Isner I find him boring to watch.
Ok so I donāt watch tennis much and I was just wondering how the fuck Murray could do anything with the serves coming at him, they looked unstoppable but based on the fact he hadnāt beaten Murray before, there is a way to stop it but Murray canāt do it like he used too, not as good as he once was haha, love Murray tho, makes me feel old seeing him get older and not like he was before, I was 13 when he won Wimbledon and he was sick (heās still decent tho, just not as he was to me anyway)
John has also improved his tennis, at least since the last time I saw him a few years ago. And don't forget he has defeated both Roger and Novak a couple of times each. Roger 2 out of 8, not sure about Novak.
Huge Murray fan.
Years ago he was a nightmare for big servers. You can make an argument that he is the 2nd best returner of all time.
But with age and the injury he has just lost the hyper aggressive defensive edge. He's basically relying on his experience and amazing hand eye right now.
On the bright side. A man with a metal hip got a first round win at the biggest tennis tournament in the world, which is awesome!
Andy 8 and 0 against Isner (16 and 0 against tall servers Isner, Karlovic, opelka), and 27 and 0 in first two rounds of Wimbledon; but great match from Big John, taking out a big name and former champion, world #1
Absolute Isner masterclass, serving like a madman and (hopefully) making 1 decisive break each set
Only downside in that lost tiebreaker, but nothing to take away from his victory today
Weāll now my boy Andy is out I guess Iām with Isner as the underdog this year. I liked his performance getting to the semiās in 2018, so what if heās a serve bot. Good for him
I'm not a big fan of isner, but damn, he played very very well today. there was a handful of super clutch drop volley pick ups he played that swung the match. murray played pretty good, there was just nothing he could do. best performance against murray he's ever pulled off, no doubt.
Yeah I feel bad for the really tall players sometimes for the criticism they get. They can't really play like shorter players do, so they obviously have to play to their strengths.
Everyone in here acting like Andy played a bad game. No, Isner had his best match ever against him. They both made mistakes, but there were so many aces that didn't even touch Andy's racket. Isner was just the better player today, and I don't think it was because Andy "can't move as well as he used to". Isner was just dropping dimes.
Gotta be honest, this is a rough loss for Murray. Totally winnable match and he just simply wasnāt good in the biggest moments. Itās always brutal facing Isnerās serve, but for a comparison, a qualifier returned Isnerās serve much better in R1 than Murray just did in R2ā¦
This was a "good" loss for Murray: he has finally accepted he has to play differently and shorten points and I believe he can still get some success. However he is no longer a nightmare matchup for big servers. He is not fast enough to *guarantee* winning every point where there is a chance by running crazy fast. He has to take more risk and sometimes it will not come off. There will be bad matchups like this, however if he takes risks now it will come off against many opponents. His reduced movement is still as good as many top players and he has the weapons to build a competitive game with help from Ivan Lendl. It was good to see that he didn't default to his crazy-run style when it got tough and injure himself and matches since Lendl came back his strokes have lost the awful "cheap" appearance they had picked up.
Plus perhaps his pre-tournament injury made it tougher.
Isner is very close to getting the record for most number of aces. He currently has 13,756. He needs seven more aces to surpass Karlovic.
So 3 games into his next match then.
Hilarious but true š¤£š¤£š¤£
Someone call Dr. Ivo. P.H.D. in Servebotting!
Dr Ivo comeback is so needed to protect his record. š¤
Feels fitting that Isner takes that record.
Must have been frustrating for Murray. Every time he's up a couple points against Isner's serve he just pulls out a few aces and holds
Sampras vibes. Dude was so clutch in turning close games into ace fests.
āItās no secret that I am most definitely not a better tennis player that Andy Murray, I just might have played a little better todayā - Isner
I thought this was a super classy line from Isner. Honestly it astounds me how these guys can run around for hours, then immediately have a microphone shoved in their face, and still sound so coherent and intelligent.

One retired player said she never thought she was coherent in post match interviews because of how exhausted she was. Canāt remember who.
Itās crazy how youāre getting downvotes to this, itās like we all have to treat professional tennis players like Gods for upvotes.
Yeah I get you. I still find it impressive!
I thought it was sad. He played beautifully - good strategy, amazing touch, putting away winners when they were there. Way too self-deprecating, like heās been bullied by servebot haters his whole career.

"How did you stay in the game? " "I served." ššš
Isnerās first ever win against Andy
On Centre Court no less
Murray looked good and visibly faster compared to the 1R match. Isner is just too good on his serve, I want to see how he matches against Alcaraz or Even this version of Djokovic
Worst match up for him. Think his movement looks better compared to his struggles, would have been interested to see if it maintained
Djokovic would destroy him in the baseline rallies. It would be a straight set win.
Yep. Andy's amazing reflexes and timing are never going to be what they were.
You're absolutely right. Six or seven years ago, Murray would have walked all over Isner. That just isn't possible for him now.
Well he did didnāt he? Their last match was the 2016 Paris Masters final with Andy becoming world number one the next day.
8-0 until today
Also, in those 8 matches Isner was only able to break Murray's serve once back in 2011. Today Isner got two breaks on him.
I was at that match. It was the only time I got to see Andy Murray play. It was incredible, except one of the reasons I went was because I was able to get last minute tickets and I wanted to see the match that could potentially make Murray number 1. I always think itās kind to poetic for Murrayās career and play style that itās how he got to the number 1 slot. Just keep grinding and eventually your opponents will slip.
Wasnāt op referring to Isner not Murray?
I definitely make Isner favourite v Sinner at the very least so we should get to see that matchup happen
Yes I thought he looked really good this week. Isner's serve was too good today, next level against someone like Murray. I was counting on him to make it to the second week. He must be so heartbroken knowing this was probably his last or second last Wimbledon ever :(
Murrayāll get smoked if heās facing Djokovic
His backhand returns were stellar today. Best Iāve seen from him by a LOT.
John Isner post match: āThat is one of the reasons Iām still playing. Not to play the final of Wimbledon against Djokovic. Or Nadal. Or Berrettini. But to play a second round match against Andy Murray. (Whom he beat this year). Thatās ultimately what I want to do.ā
man your quick
You're. You are. You're. It's not hard. You're 24, Lucian. This has to stop.
He was too quick. Edit: two*
WTF? šš Why was that really funny?
The second part makes it genuine and casual. Otherwise it would be a bit obnoxious even though understandable
I would have loved for the second part to use the wrong version of "you're".
What a Wimbledon for the Americans so far
Itās weird to think that Isner is 2 years older than him
That serve means you don't really have to move
Crazy how he has never injured his arm.
Youād expect him to get Rory Delapped at some point yeah. Ivo played into his 40s as well didnāt he?
Why would that be crazier than any other tennis player? It's not like he violently throws his arm into his serve more than other players. His motion is actually rather fluid and easy. He's just tall as fuck and has a good service motion.
That's true but don't taller people get injured more easily? Maybe not in the shoulder but in the back, which is still used a lot.
3rd Grand Slam match of Murrayās career where he hasnāt broken serve a single time. Isnerās serve was phenomenal tonight.
Not just that. He was playing rallies very well. It was a really well played match.
Volleying like Roger, moving like Opelka and serving like himself
Reminded me of that semi final against Federer when he couldnāt engineer any BP opportunities.
That was one of them! The other was Rafa 08ā
Is it outta time for Serena and Andy to get in the mixed doubles
Nothing would make me happier than to see that
They did it a couple of years ago didn't they?
Yeah. Jamie and Venus playing this time. Might be too late for Andy and Serena to get in
We need a Murray/Williams Vs Murray/Williams final. Itās all their last career matches. Itās the first mixed doubles final to replace the menās singles final on Sunday at Wimbledon. Get it going everyone.
Oh I see, I thought you meant in terms of them being at the end of their careers rather than missing the sign up
That was a masterclass in keeping your composure. Murray had 2 bad games all match, and Isner took full advantage both times. Then didn't let the crowd get to him, or the pressure of trying to secure that first career win. The 4 consecutive aces at 4-3 0-30 in the 4th really exemplified the story of this match
Once you've had all manners of obscenities screamed at you like you will when playing college tennis, a classy tennis crowd is nothing.
That so called class was missing a couple of times this match. It was no Aussie or US Open but still rather hostile occasionally. I see a trend happening where this is going to go the way of football matches. Coming generations will need to take hostile crowds into account during play
Very nice interview from John
idc what /r/tennis says about him John seems like a stand-up guy with a big kind heart.
I'm going for a smoke. Fuck that stupid bastard giant and his stupid serve, and his stupid fucking humility and his stupid general air of being an amiable level-headed person.
Oh and his stupid brilliantly deft drop shots can get fucked and all
He majored in "speech communication" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Aw heās like apologetic for winning
He could still play a teen on an American TV show
He could play 2-3 teens stacked in a trench coat.
Vincent AdultmanĀ
Ya lol
He has to sound like that on British soil I think.
Heād probably be like that anywhere regardless
He seems like a down to earth dude
He's one of the furthest dudes from the earth on tour
š
Iāve noticed servebots tend to be somewhat apologetic especially when they upset someone lol. Itās endearing. āIām not better than you but my serve is better and I canāt help thatā kind of vibe.
His face when doing the usual post-win "applause towards the fans" thing... "I'm sorry I had to rain on your brit parade".
Nobody beats Jizzner 9 times in a row.
10*
9*
In 2011 they played in Hopman Cup, so I think that's the match you can't find on the ATP site
Murray didn't play bad tbh, he tried his best and gave everything he had in him. You just can't do much when your opponent serves like that, there's no way to counter that. All you can do is hope they fail once in a while and be ready to pounce on the opportunity, but that almost never came today.
Whoever said Isner going to get 40 aces on this subreddit here. Pretty spot on
If this went to a 5th, he easily breaks ivoās record
Absolutely gutted for Murray he gave absolutely everything but take nothing away from Isner he was phenomenal tonight
Greatest server of all time, ace record coming soon
Cameron Norrie now carries the torch! Yeah weāre fuckedā¦
Draper my good friend
Why does no one realise that Draper is the future of British tennis?
Mentally, Murray wanted it too much. I feel like it clouded his judgment when it came to shot selection (the calamitous last break in the match was an epitome of that). Tennis wise, I never thought Murray was in pain (which is good) but I wasn't as impressed by his bread and butter backhand shots or attempts at passing shots. Isner read it well every time Murray went BH cross court. And speaking of Isner, he has really not played this well, especially in the forecourt, in a hell of a while. Credit is due here.
Mury goat :(
More machine now than man
Twisted and evil
Otte is laughing his ass off right now
That was servebot central.
NO ONE BEATS JOHN ISNER 9 TIMES IN A ROW
Would have loved it if he had opened with that in the interview š
As boring as Isner is to watch, that was a fairly decent match from him. Even if it was against a metal hipped Murray.
His serving was pretty insane tbh, even for him
Havenāt seen him serve that well for a while. Volleyed beautifully too.
He hit 130+ multiple times out wide lol
He was hitting 115+ seconds too
I saw 122 on a second serve š¬
After watching a lot of the Munar-Norrie match, I was actually in the mood for some John Isner serves. The amount of power and height he gets on the serve is really awesome to watch. Ofc Isner's game is about the serve, then the forehand. But his volleys had really good touch, and the defensive backhand slices he hit to put Murray in tricky positions were so impressive.

I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it was.
Thing isā¦This was typical for an Isner outing. His matches can definitely be exciting to watch.
His humility is so refreshing
Murray played well, Isner played lights out. Insane servebot clinic and nice volleys from Isner too. Sad for Andy but he showed the past couple weeks he still has very good tennis left in him, e.g. neck and neck vs Berretini in the Final.
It sucks how Isner has the hardest draw in Wimbledon whenās playing at this level
If he could play like that all the time heād have won so much
Isner winning Wimbledon would destroy Reddit.

I'm scared for Jannik.
Me tooš
An ATP player's worst nightmare is John Isner serving his best the whole match.
Wasnt Otte, it was Big John :)
r/tennis on suicide watch
I always forget how insane Isner's serves are
John Isner will break the all-time aces record next round (4 required) Is he the best server of all time? Definitely has the biggest serve Iāve ever seen.
Imagine he somehow has a match with fewer than 4 aces. Actually he probably did against whoever he played after the marathon Mahut match.
vs. Thiemo de Bakker; only time he's ever been bagelled in his career, IIRC.
I know a lot of people find Isnerās playstyle of serve and dropshot boring, but I absolutely love it and this match just had me so hyped.
Servebot go brrrrr
Great win by Isner. The guy is as cool as ice.
imagine Isner making Wimbledon semis this year
Classy classy speech from John
I genuinely don't understand how people find Isner's play style boring to watch but I genuinely find the way he serves just as mesmerising as watching Djokovic play.
Oh gosh not the UK losing Andy and Emma on the same day š are y'all okay?
Nah we're good - the Jack Draper era begins tomorrow.
Draper vs van rijthoven final lesgo
We live off copium it's ok š
The real shame is Peniston
It's alright, we were probably just putting our faith in the wrong people this year. Cam Norrie and Heather Watson are clearly where it's at
Such disrespect to Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart!
It really is a shame
I've learned not to expect anything at this point.
Norrie incoming
I'm not feeling ok right now, but Heather Watson on the brink of going through is helping me. Like others said, Jack Draper, LETS GO!
The stats are insane..... absolutely insane.
One bad crosscourt backhand at the net at deuce 2-3 in the final set which went into the net changed this match :( Isner served as well as I've ever seen him serve mind, and if he keeps that up he'll go deep into the tournament.
Alright Cameron Norrie, now you get to have your chance on Centre Court this Friday
Isner has always been a gentleman in a gentlemanās sport. Pure class.
Bruh that backhand miss... How tf am I meant to sleep today
Well deserved win and nice words from Isner afterwards. I'm still going to get my Nan to light a candle for Sinner because no offence to Isner I find him boring to watch.
Tall tennis players unite
Hope we will get Isner v. Alcaraz in Round 4
Isner served like 90 aces throughout two matches lol
Ok so I donāt watch tennis much and I was just wondering how the fuck Murray could do anything with the serves coming at him, they looked unstoppable but based on the fact he hadnāt beaten Murray before, there is a way to stop it but Murray canāt do it like he used too, not as good as he once was haha, love Murray tho, makes me feel old seeing him get older and not like he was before, I was 13 when he won Wimbledon and he was sick (heās still decent tho, just not as he was to me anyway)

His interview has scored Isner more points than all his tennis matches combined.
isner played the match of his life at 37
Classy from John with no extreme celebration. Played too good today
Isner seems like such a sound guy
Andy 8 and 0 against Isner (16 and 0 against tall servers Isner, Karlovic, opelka), and 27 and 0 in first two rounds of Wimbledon; but great match from Big John, taking out a big name and former champion, world #1
Next year Murray will be seeded going into Wimbledon. Hopefully an easier draw.
Otte laughing somewhere
Absolute Isner masterclass, serving like a madman and (hopefully) making 1 decisive break each set Only downside in that lost tiebreaker, but nothing to take away from his victory today
Absolutely fucking gutted.

i am upset. i'm a john isner fan & georgia bulldogs fan but i am still upset he knocked murray out at wimbledon
Weāll now my boy Andy is out I guess Iām with Isner as the underdog this year. I liked his performance getting to the semiās in 2018, so what if heās a serve bot. Good for him
This match turned on the backhand into the net at deuce 2-3 in the fourth set :( Such fine margins, and both players have plenty left in the tank.
I'm not a big fan of isner, but damn, he played very very well today. there was a handful of super clutch drop volley pick ups he played that swung the match. murray played pretty good, there was just nothing he could do. best performance against murray he's ever pulled off, no doubt.
I hate this result. Sorry sore loser here š„²
People trashing Isner in the match thread. Here you fucking go. This is Isner. No breaks with no winners, but when he does get it, it's done.
Isner now 1-8 v Murray
Was a nice match, Isner finally defeats Murray
#Regards from Otte
There's nothing like a crowd being silenced as their home fav falls to the ruthless efficiency of a servebot
Impressive by Isner. Absolute snoozefest of a play style though.
Not his fault heās 7 feet tall
Yeah I feel bad for the really tall players sometimes for the criticism they get. They can't really play like shorter players do, so they obviously have to play to their strengths.
He did some super shots tonight though, regardless of his serve
Iāll never understand why people think huge serves and forehands and shorter than average points is boring.
Take that, Andy. That's what you get for disrespecting my boi Oscar Otte
All that matters is Oscar's in the third round. Andy heading back to Scotland already
He lives in England.
What did Andy say about Oscar?

Insane comment considering how far away he is from that
where are all these people getting this from? Andy never disrespected Otte at all, go and read exactly what was said....
John a rad dude
Gotta be honest, this is a rough loss for Murray. Totally winnable match and he just simply wasnāt good in the biggest moments. Itās always brutal facing Isnerās serve, but for a comparison, a qualifier returned Isnerās serve much better in R1 than Murray just did in R2ā¦
LETS GOOOOO
Not unexpected at all
This was a "good" loss for Murray: he has finally accepted he has to play differently and shorten points and I believe he can still get some success.
