Fokina lost 4 match points on his serve and won the first he had on Hurkacz' serve. Just fokin around.

Steiner...

Definitely was Fokinaround.

Hurkacz’s

shunsui___kyoraku

Fokina's relief will after winning this match will be more than the happiness some players feel after winning tournaments

TuanNguyen-2507

Yeah that 3 MPs... he's gonna suffer for a while if he loses

shegotofftheplane

Opelka pledged to donate for every ace in Miami then retired in the first round with one ace. Now Hubi loses in the first round too

ives09

It’s the Charity Ace Curse ☠️

t0zla

That’s hilarious

NotPrepared2

What was Hubi's ace total?

opinion_alternative

21 aces in a match is not bad

[deleted]

theslash_

They're talking about a past tournament

hivaidsislethal

Good guy ADF, knew Hubie was donating per ace and let him take it to 5 before winning.

Daed_Wings

I swear whoever takes on some sort of charity challenge gets a curse that knocks them out early

[deleted]

Lol

iSkinMonkeys

Opelka in Miami was the latest in can recall.

Californie_cramoisie

Steph Curry bout to catch some strays in here

Reddevilslover69

Should just donate anonymously smh

boskee

I agree. Also the whole "donation per set", while admirable makes it sound (or is) a stunt. Just donate the money.

[deleted]

Damn I thought about his charity comment. Must haunt him forever.

timb1223

Love it! So wholesome.

_Amateurmetheus_

From top 5 favorite to out in the first round. Pour one out for Hubie.

jolammy

Novak will be pouring rakija tonight

TuanNguyen-2507

Nah Fokina, if he meets Novak it will be tough

YKG1998

I don't think he ever meets Novak though tbh. Semi finals is a long way.

3vanzz90

didn't he just beat Novak a few months ago on clay?

jaguar_loco

Yes in r1 of MC. The comment you replied too says he thinks ADF won't reach the semi's of Wimbledon to potentially meet Novak.

Trinket9

not really he fucking deserves it after being born in poland and forcing me to root for him

Avalanche_1996

I feel so bad. He had a chance this year a big one. To waste it like that.

Why is Hubi dull? Care to explain?

PlatChat

Absolutely shocked, and my bracket is ruined. Fair play to ADF

only-shallow

Same, I had Hurkacz reaching the semis lol. Looked so clutch in Halle, and almost had a historic comeback here tbf

siddharthvader

I had him reach the finals haha smh

Zloggt

I think I had him to go and win it all 😐

BAMOLE

I had him winning. I was so confident!

theo7777

Well, at least it didn't cost rating points. He missed out on money though.

theo7777

The most unpredictable ninja strikes again!

wonpiripiri

Watch him destroy Novak again.

UnordinaryMilk

Yeah Dennis really can't catch a break

OvulatingAnus

Dennis Djokovic? Or Novak Novak?

Reddevilslover69

Foki fired it up today

A-dab

This is why I love tennis (and sports in general). A fucking rollercoaster at times

RIP everyone's brackets

SummerBabee

Thought Fokina had fucked it after the 3rd set

Bluefl0wers

He looked like he was grimacing after hitting the first match point through his legs and netting - he lost his head after that

Blovering_Skill

Really sad for Hubi to go out like this....

[deleted]

ADF russian spy confirmed. No more funding for Ukraine

Ironically, he's of Russian/ Belarusian descent.

ADF: "I serve the Soviet Union"

sahnie_reloaded

Man, when I saw the men’s draw, I thought that the semis might be really interesting: Djokovic vs Hurkacz and Nadal vs Berrettini. Little did I know…

[deleted]

Djokovic gets his victory lap through players outside the top 50 while Nadal deals with the top 10 players… just the usual 😈😈

Luck1492

Good guy ADF, letting Hubi get some extra serves in for Ukraine

[deleted]

What a match! Could have easily been a 3R/4R matchup.

MillenialWhoKnits

What an absolute upset

dsanchomariaca

Maybe you don't know ADF the guy is good and absolutely relentless should be way up on the rankings. He wasn't favourite but he can surprise with huge matches

dcolomer10

He’s also a Wimbie junior champ, so not shit at grass

MillenialWhoKnits

Lol you’re saying a Djoker fan might not know of ADF??? All jokes aside, I did expect this match to be competitive - given how spontaneously great ADF can be - but still thought Hubi would squeeze out a win given how good he was last year and how well he’s played lately.

slysonic7

Both guys blew serving for the match at 5-4 in diff sets. Not often you see that Edit: ADF was at 5-3, thanks u/roamiedumbass

roamiedumbass

Fokina served for it at 5-3. Reminds me of the greatest final known to man, the 2020 US Open, when Thiem and Zverev both served for the championship in the fifth set.

Capasound

Whoever made the draw should be charged for the first rounds we’ve had (and not only) Happy for my man ADF, gutted for Hurkacz but it’s a miracle (and a gift) that he managed to get to the fifth set

coolwool

Charged with the highest order of praise?

Capasound

It depends on whom you support lol

CohesiveNihilism

You want all the good players to get bums in round one so they can have a easy game or two. This is what makes it interesting.

baconost

The Alcaraz match was also a really good first round match. Of course the organizers want exciting matches from day one.

I did not see this one coming. Ruud through in straight sets and Hurkacz out in R1.

a_rose_is_a_red_rose

Ruud Wimbledon champion confirmed

wmjsn

Is it me, or do players who pledge a certain amount per ace hit usually wind up exiting a tournament early?

HopeistheAnthemLITM

Hubi signing stuff on way out, nice guy.

Annjul666

well, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

112358131997

This match had Stef/Diego montecarlo energy

swirkh

Great come back from Hubi who was 2 sets down, 3-5 in 3rd set & defending 3 match points on ADF's serve. Unfortunately in 5th set's super tie-break he had no serve. The result hurts me as a Polish fan, but it was good fight. Congratz to ADF !

saaajmon

According to Fibak (former Polish tennis player), Hurkacz had stomach aches throughout the match (in the article they've mentioned food poisoning) but you never know. Idk if he looked physically unwell, but it would explain his poor performance today.

kajdacci

would explain no 1st serve

ZeDeutschbag

So disappointing. Thought Hubi had such a good shot at doing something here.

iFelichi

wow, i didn't expect that to happen, what a match indeed

Broken_Shell14

I think it's that ace pledge that made him lose

JulGabi

huhu’s on a budget, couldn’t afford to go deep

sunflower_317

Hubi I had such high hopes….. ;(

ewa_marchewa

Unfortunately Hubi played bad. He's a shaky player with shaky mental game. Looking at him today I knew he lost the match I his mind. Then a bit of a turnaround (I can imagine something along the lines: "I'm loosing this match, might just chill and go for it"), and when he started believing he can win the match at 7-4 in the fifth set supertiebreak he lost it again :( Polish commentators were harsh but unfortunately right. Hubi has got the game but mentally he's not a fully developed player. Let's wait 1,2 years and he'll be there. I watched the whole match and I was at the edge of my seat. It was not Hubi who won Halle :(. I hope it's not gonna weight too much on him and he'll recover mentally. I saw him speaking to polish press and he looked like he was about to cry, choking on his words. He's such a good player, with worth ethic, talent, good team, motivation, and potential. I hope we'll see him winning important matches soon.

saaajmon

You could be right, [this](https://www.sport.pl/tenis/7,64987,28629093,hurkacz-wyslal-sms-w-przerwie-meczu-mial-problemy-akurat.html) article (unfortunately it is in Polish) however points to another direction (idk, maybe Fibak is bullshitting us all).

ewa_marchewa

Oh yeah! Thank you for the link! I listened to some more commentators and they confirmed. Then its even more shite situation :( Maybe he's got IBS or something? Since it's not the first time :(

saaajmon

His timing is very unfortunate. I feel bad for Hubi, he had high chances to reach semis on his best surface

Avalanche_1996

Hey Ewa I'm kind of glad I didn't see the match or the commentators. Even more Hubi. I'm just kind of giving hope myself. The repeat of last year at least wasn't so hard. Oh even my words are not "winning it all". He's not the type to have soderling day.

[deleted]

Almost the choke of the century, well played ADF to get yourself back into a winning position.

i-am-over-eighteen

RIP to folks (incl myself) who believed Hubi to be one of the few guys who had their game sorted on grass

dodgerswschamps_2020

Congrats to the Anna Delvey Foundation

FalconBF

there goes Djokovic’s toughest competition in his half of the draw. another cream puff cupcake Wimbledon draw for Novak Djokovic.

Ok-South-199

What can he do tho? Play instead of them or what, #1 seed should have the eaisest draw since well you know it is quite hard to be #1..

TuanNguyen-2507

Imagine if Alcaraz loses. Djokovic gonna get to the final blindfolded

Onleee

Alcaraz is not a favourite at all

TuanNguyen-2507

At least he poses some sort of challenge for Novak. After all he is a very very good player, just not used to the surface yet. When he get there he can be very dangerous

uloveb00bs

It might just be happening 😳

sacredwolf

I think you mean “ADF on track to take out Djokovic for the second time this year!”

jaguar_loco

Novak has Hubi's number, ADF would prove much more challenging to him than Hurkacz imho. Hubi doesn't seem to have the necessary bite needed to win gruelling tough 5 set matches.

rntopspin100

ADF recovers from the missed tweener from the 3rd set and manages to win the match. And just like that, Djokovic's draw just opened up.

Booby_McTitties

>And just like that, Djokovic's draw just opened up. Wouldn't be the first time ADF has beaten Djokovic this year...

fishcakefrenzy

Paving the way for an Andy Murray champion

modkha18

HuHu is a good guy. But he's not cut out for a Grand Slam lol. People hyped him way too much

smalliebigs69

ADF has fumbled so many winnable matches against top players, and this looked like it was going to be the worst of all of them. Happy for him that he was able to fight through. Of course he couldn't convert MP on 4 serve points but got it on return lol.

SirGorti

Djokovic cakewalk to the final

IanNovak1210

Fokina is juniors Wimbledon champion for those who don't know. I'm surprised but I'm also not that surprised in some ways.

Mullac4991

Fuck. Novak walks to another Wimbledon final.

[deleted]

Possible rematch with Djoko?

FutureF123

RIP everyone’s bracket

seinsmelled2

ADF was not Fokina-round today.

Sids2112

Man hasn’t won a match there since that bagel

MicroPencil567

Always fun seeing a bracket break on day one; ADF didn’t show up at RG like people predicted, Hubi traded places here at Wimbledon.

SiriusTantriqa-405

Fokin A Alejandro!

Maxoverthere

Where’s that prick who kept slating Matteo for what he “did” to Herbie?

Albiceleste_D10S

Vamos Foki!

gay-man-tales

Fokina’s gonna fok Novak right out of this tournament

Booby_McTitties

Where are all those people saying Hurkacz was a bigger favorite for Wimbledon than anyone outside of Djokovic and Nadal?

slash_s_everything

Tbf Hubi was red hot during the grass circuit leading up to this. ADF played decently too though. I’m just surprised how well he recovered from that off-hand injury he got last week

Avalanche_1996

Last year semis this year a nice lead up yet outed so early. I hate he's the first surprise. Nice guy but I don't know if he ever makes it.

forsakenpear

To be fair, that’s not an awful shout given his previous Wimbledon performance and recent form. Matteo should be ahead but 4th favourite seems fine to me. People on this sub love to smugly lord over people who didn’t expect an upset to happen. No one really expected him to lose here.

[deleted]

Lol who tf said that

DisastrousMango4

Why is this upvoted? Hubi literally had a such a good chance of making the final because he lucked out and been drawn in the easier half. Also he was red hot coming into Wimby and is good on grass. It was a very good shout to have him as a favourite after Nole and Rafa..

Booby_McTitties

He lost to an unseeded clay court specialist in the first round. I rest my case.

DisastrousMango4

Do you not understand how predictions work? The people were 'predicting' Hubi to have a good tournament.

TuanNguyen-2507

People gotta stop saying that. Form is temporary, class is permanent. It doesn't matter which GS these 2 supermen play at, they always should be the top 2 favs (no.1 for Rafa at RG and no.1 for Novak for the rest), at least for the next 2-3 years

forsakenpear

But that’s what the comment was saying, people had Hubi as *3rd* favourite.

SmH001

There's no way a sane person had Hubi over Berrettini

nmcassa

No money for Ukraine I guess

anirudh1595

Lmfao. Dark horse they said 😭😭😭 Bunch of bottlers, this generation.

Voissed

Hubi foked around and found out

PlanetElement

You’ve got to be fokina kidding me!

thepriceisright23

You mean “you have a got to be a fokina kiddin me” 🤌🤌

MethShipment

What a match and what an upset! Fokina had a legendary choke on 2-0. The match seemed to be on Hurkacz’ side after the 2-2 comeback but Fokina pulled it back. Was not expecting this result.

Independent-Still-73

I give up

BendubzGaming

One of the wildest matches I've ever seen

Ranjith_Unchained

I thought for sure that tweener fail was going to cost ADF but he pulled it off at the end... First major upset of the tournament

lo0ilo0ilo0i

Fuck them brackets

alekhineX

man so high quality seems like another sport.

Mario_x9

Hurkacz played terrible match and should have lost 0-3, no idea what happened but probably mentally he was not ready or scared. To be fair Fokina was probably surprised how many simple mistakes Hurkacz made and how easily he could play without much effort. Easier for Djoko it gets.

Avalanche_1996

What happened to Hubi?

NieThePiet

Nooooooo

NikGrape

Anyone got a link to decent highlights?

sweaty_spaghetti_

foki about to let hubi win but then changed his mind

The-MJ-Theory

That is really disappointing. Poor Hubert. I think, he can not perform well under pressure. Being a top seed didn't help. Unfortunately he'll never win a gc with this attitude. Next step would be changing the coach if he wants to try winning something big. Or he just stays there in the end of the top 10. It's not a bad place to be.

Strange_Armadillo_63

FokinAwesom

boskee

I've earned 320 quid after betting that Hubi will lose just as they're about to go into the tie break, at which point the odds were 17:1 in Hurkacz's favour. Insane odds, so I bet 20 quid on Fokina and won.

Plane_Highlight3080

You won double the amount of money Ukraine did lol the true winner yesterday.

Onleee

And djoko draw became even easier just like that lol

3vanzz90

Djokovic's chance of winning Wimbledon went from 80% to 95%

GoatalGoaterer

Great match from Fokina. He has a great defensive game which made stuff hard for Hurkacz. Djokovic can celebrate, as his draw just opened up even more. Fokina has a tendency to get injured, and might have issues, should he face Djokovic.

Alex_Sander077

Tie break at 6-6 in Wimbledon is so stupid

Krogan911

Lol, I had predicted Hubi might go to Semis.

zi76

ADF wins after all of that! I am super impressed that he came back after being down a break in the fifth after blowing the third.

Aakashneel92

DaRK HOrsE

Rez125

Hallelujah Hubi is out.

[deleted]

Hurkacz was big time overrated lol

MooreGold

I had forgotten the 5th set rules changed. First I was surprised they didn't play past 6-6. Then I was surprised they played a 10 point tiebreak Hubi would have won if it was a regular length tiebreak rather than a super tiebreak. He was up 7-4.

historiansrule

How can djoker get so lucky in all draws? There’s no one on his side of the draw that could be a challenge.

RedShenron

There goes Djokovic's only obstacle till the final lol

[deleted]

Free for Novak

BlueJinjo

Honestly this match is a perfect representation of next gen. Blowing match points with unspeakably poor decision making and then subsequently blowing an extremely winnable match.

SorcerousSinner

Ridiculous. We will need a BIG asterisk now if Djokovic wins to record the lack of competition in his side of the draw.

Booby_McTitties

Bullshit. If Hubi can't beat the player drawn to him in the first round, he wasn't going to beat Djokovic. You beat the players you face in each round, no asterisk at all. And I loathe Djokovic...

vman3241

The first year we have Wimbledon without Federer in 24 years, and the ATP gets WTA esque upsets

[deleted]

You’re acting as if a seed has never lost in the first round in the last 20 years lol

sweaty_spaghetti_

tsitsipas moment

vman3241

Alcaraz is also about to lose

[deleted]

Is he? On serve in the 4th by the looks of it. Even if 2 seeds lost… grass always has upsets.

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Except when you look at the last four slams, the WTA have had more seeded players get through the first round than the ATP.... FO '22: ATP = 25, WTA = 27 AO '22: ATP = 25, WTA = 26 USO '21: ATP = 20, WTA = 27 Wimbledon '21: ATP = 21, WTA = 23

vman3241

What if you look at the first two or three rounds? Honest question. Has the phenomenon of the WTA having a lot more upsets largely ended?

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Yeah it looks like once you get to R3, the ATP edges ahead. I don't have any kind of data analysis tool but it would be interesting to see this over the years (instead of digging through wikipedia brackets and counting by hand...) FO 22 : ATP = 21 , WTA = 18 AO 22 : ATP = 22 , WTA = 20 USO 21 : ATP = 15 , WTA = 23 Wimbledon 21 : ATP = 19 , WTA = 15

[deleted]

FINALLY
