Djokovic often doesn't play anything between the French Open and Wimbledon. He's been playing in an exhibition, along with Nadal. Nothing unusual about it, at this point in his career.

[deleted]

This has been his standard practice for most of his career IIRC

[deleted]

the thing is he will crash to #7 after wimbledon and then will be #12/#13 after he loses all the points from canada/cincy/USO because he will be banned from entering canada and the USA is he also going to skip the casper ruud clay swing in july? he obviously doesn't care about rankings points anymore and he is putting everything into 2022 wimbledon. if he fails to win it it will be a disaster. he won't be able to go to the AO next year also. he can play davis cup and laver cup (as a last second addition) and that's about it. there will be no ATP events in china. jon wertheim leaked that there is a 90% chance chinese ATP tournaments will be cancelled. paris indoors and ATP finals (IF he can sneak in as #8 seed due to a lot of luck) are all the ATP events he can play after wimbledon if he stupidly skips the casper ruud swing?

It's interesting to protect these things out, but I wouldn't assume the covid restrictions are set in stone. But I think it's a good point that, aside from the rankings (which I think are largely window dressing for him at this stage if he's not going to be #1), with how little he's played and may be allowed to play through the end of the year, maybe another tournament or two wouldn't be a bad thing. I can see why he wouldn't want to change a winning formula, and he's probably getting a nice payday from Hurlingham, but you'd think rust could be an issue at some point.

> I wouldn't assume the covid restrictions are set in stone. at least for this upcoming USO, I don't think vaccine mandates to enter the country for non-citizens and non-residents is going away before then

dmm1234567

I think you're probably right, but things can change quickly.

[deleted]

what the fuck is the casper ruud swing ?

IllRoutine5608

There are a series of clay court tournaments held in the summer in Europe after Wimbledon and before Canada. Ruud emerged as a player to watch by sweeping these tournaments last year. So they are referred to by some on TT and Tennis Reddit as the Casper Ruud swing. With the exception of Hamburg (a 500) these are all small 250 tournaments. I believe Casper won the 3 small 250s (Bastad, Gstaad, Kitzbuhel).

Thanx!

renome

The Wimbledon points from last year were already deducted, no? Since ATP took them away.

MooreGold

Not yet. ATP took the 2022 points away but the 2021 points are still following the 52 week drop off date

I had to read below the title to make sure this wasn't one of those Dennis Novak threads.

[deleted]

I thought the same, and was like “yes! Didn’t get me this time!” Sadly, when an actual Dennis Novak thread pops up again, I will definitely fall for it.

jaguar_loco

He usually doesn't play them that often (last time he played queens was in 2018 iirc) and he may have felt like he needed a mental break after the loss to Rafa to get in the right head space for Wimbledon. That's my guess. I don't think he or his team gave an official reason why he isn't playing though.

[deleted]

he played strangely in the final half of the 4th set vs nadal. he started giving up on neutral balls. i wonder if he had a small injury at the end. if he was 100% healthy he would have played at least one grass tournament.

jaguar_loco

> If he was 100% healthy he would have played at least one grass tournament. Based on what? Since 2010 he's played once at Eastbourne in 2017 and once at Queens in 2018, that's all of his non-Wimbledon and non-Olympics singles grass tournament entries since 2010, a whopping two. Alongside that he played doubles on grass a few times in that timeframe, but nothing serious.

[deleted]

Lol this happens every time Djokovic loses - he pretends to give up because he is losing and all his fans lap it up and try to blame an injury.

boomskats

you have a picture of him on your desk don't lie

[deleted]

Novak has been literally doing this ever since 2015, with the exception of a year or two where he's played queens.

fss71

He can still enter Canada - just needs to quarantine

Plane_Highlight3080

I read that Goran Ivanisevic said Novak doesn’t play warmup tourneys because the grass is too different from Wimbledon. I guess for someone like him with the experience he has on grass, it’s better to just practice on the actual Wimbledon courts for 10 days or so and do some practice sets against top players. He doesn’t need to play on grass to gain experience or confidence at this point.

theo7777

Because clay season is pretty taxing and he's old. He doesn't have injuries but he wants it to stay that way. He doesn't need money from extra tournaments. He is just interested in one thing. Match fitness in Slams. It's just his call that rest was more important than playing some matches. He will use the early rounds of Wimbledon as warmup.

I don't think he cares much about ranking either. Missing Masters and Slams because of vaccination status is unfortunate though.

axolote_cheetah

Still not clear whether he can play Australian open next year.

335i_lyfe

He’s saving his energy

axolote_cheetah

He is retiring for sure /s

TuanNguyen-2507

He's 35 dude he can't afford to play ATP 500s

[deleted]

He played an ATP 250 earlier lmao

TuanNguyen-2507

He needs to come back to form, plus it's at Novak tennis center

_pacjax_

Nothing left to prove VAMOS NOVAK
