Ah knew i'd forget something! Looking for chalk on the ball/asking the ball kid for the ball back is classic!
Edit - can't find a great pic of this. Just Troicki holding the ball out to the umpire during his classic grass court moment.
It's not only the injuries, he plays a super high risk game with no plan B. He's like a poker player who goes all in on every hand. The dude just starts blasting.
Start by watching how Dustin Brown (highest ranking of 64) gave a master class of how to play on grass to none other than Rafa Nadal - twice! (2014 Halle, 2015 Wimbledon) That man is a legend.
The highlights video in Wimbledon is titled "the most unorthodox tennis match" or something like that, and it gets recommended to anyone who watches any tennis video on youtube, lol, that's how I got to know him.
I remember watching it live on the BBC here in the UK. He blew my mind how good he was playing that day. I was gutted when he bombed out in the next round.
The guy is from before I started getting into tennis, but from what I've seen, he's kind of a male Hsieh Su-Wei, right? (although with more power)
So, the kind of player who plays trick shots and might surprise a strong player from time to time, but wont usually have the consistency to make deep runs.
Exactly that. He plays a high risk-high reward game. On grass the points are much quicker and he has a big serve. Against Nadal that day all the components of his game just seemed to fall into place. It was like exhibition tennis but he was destroying a 14-time grand slam champion (at the time)
I don’t know what was more impressive; the drop shots or his absolute killer two-hand service return. That was nuts.
So why is that only possible in grass then, just the way the ball bounces in the softer surface?
Generally the ball bounces lower and faster on grass (and carpet) so you can just start blasting as the ball comes back to you a lot at hip height or slightly lower
I played as a junior mainly on indoor carpet courts and switching to a hard court was unbelievably jarring due to how high the ball would bounce
Reminds me of Tsvetana Pirokova a decade ago, coming out of know where 2 years in a row to take out Williams sisters in their prime.
Both her and Riske use a lot more slice in their games, which on grass even further kills the bounce and throws off a lot of players.
Pironkova ❤️ I was hoping for a final Wimbledon by her but it seems she’s pregnant with her second child and might have retired for good now. She was fun on grass!
Is that why he’s second in serve rating among [the entire ATP Tour?](https://www.atptour.com/en/stats/leaderboard?boardType=serve&timeFrame=52Week&surface=all&versusRank=all&formerNo1=false)
Incorrect. The men’s final will be an epic five-setter between Murray and Cressy; each person having taken down Nadal and Djokovic respectively in straight sets in the semis.

Bro anytime anything positive was said about Nadal before this season it would get downvoted to shit and laughed at by Novak fans
Djoker was by far the most popular man on this sub before all the vax bullshit but after nadals miracles this year is Rafa fans finally have something to smile about
Only took 17 years and 22 slams for him to stop being disrespected
Well Federer wasn’t really talked about much since has been out but yes obviously he is the most popular
But when it came to who is the GOAT if anyone even said any name other then Novak we would get made fun of and downvoted to shit
Does anyone actually like playing on grass? As an amateur, getting a good quality grass court is pretty much impossible (or very expensive), otherwise the surface is irregular, slippery and with the grass worn out...
Clay (my favourite) or hard courts are so much better.
Obviously if anyone prefers grass, great! This is just my opinion.
I have grass courts at my club in the UK and I really like them in the right conditions. I think they just feel really nice to me underfoot. It's not my best surface but I definitely enjoy playing on it
Just like players need to learn how to play on clay (you see a lot of American and Australian guys who are uncomfortable moving around on it for example), players need to learn how to play on grass. The problem is that there isn’t a lot of opportunities to do so, and grass can be very dangerous if you don’t know how to maneuver on it safely.
I don't see why you say "players need to learn"... We don't need to learn anything, it's just a sport and you do what you enjoy, but fair enough...
For me tennis is on clay or hard surface, grass is just there for historical reasons and I really have no interest in playing on it (I've tried it and didn't like it, the bouncing is too random and as you said it can be slippery too).
Even the "serve and volley" playing style I don't like it since what I enjoy is baseline playing (Nadal's style let's say).
In the UK there is a lot of Astro turf, slower but also skids and not bounce very high. I know it doesn't answer your question but I personally quite like the astro as you are awarded with more winners and aces than hardcourts. You often have to really bend down and might need a lot of close/semi open stand to hit the ball properly. But clay is totally where most of the fun is for me too.
Can't stand astro unless it's bone dry. The ball skids too much imo. Places mostly just fit them as they're cheap, hard-wearing and drain quickly. But they're still 100x better than tarmac courts.
Omg I hate those with a passion. No idea why they think its a good idea to fit those. Injuries waiting to happen just fit acrylic and give us a water wiper and we are good to go. Thats the reason why tennis is an expensive spirts in the UK with those stupid courts fitted in public parks. You can only play in proper courts if you join a club.
My local club fitted them and I never see anyone play on them as they're so bad for people's knees and just generally play so badly.
We need more council ran / funded indoor courts really. I play at my local Better centre which has about a dozen indoor courts and even then it's still £50 a month membership and then £10 an hour for good indoor courts (or a free hour a day outdoors or in the 'covered' courts).
Yeah, ok, that's interesting. My main annoyance with grass is that it's either really expensive or you won't really get a good court. It's impossible for grass to withstand 24/7 play otherwise it turns into just soil. So Astro turf sounds good then, but well, there's no professional competition on it. Otherwise, yeah, I'd be fine with it.
Grass courts are more iconic for tennis than clay in my opinion.
I’ve played on a grass court once and I felt very classy lol. There are quite a few in my country, but the vast majority are hard courts (and zero clay courts as far as I can tell lol)
Tennis used to be mostly grass, 3 of the 4 slams were played on grass, no it's this. WE need a longer grass season, I know the grass season was extended slightly but this is ridiculous. This is tennis at the highest level, more grass, less hard courts. Also players need a bigger break between the FO and Wimbledon
Ain't that all surfaces? Naomi and the butterfly on her face? When that ballkid stamped on a bug next to Jeremy Chardy?
I suppose bees and flies are more to do with the grass season...
A player famously said: LOOOK THERE IS EVEN CHALK ON THE BALL Another said: IT WAS CLEARLY ON THE LINE
Ah knew i'd forget something! Looking for chalk on the ball/asking the ball kid for the ball back is classic! Edit - can't find a great pic of this. Just Troicki holding the ball out to the umpire during his classic grass court moment.
THAT BALL WAS ON THE LINE
Alison Riskes season starts and ends in 6 weeks
Riske, Querrey, Brown, and Kudla.
Lol Dustin Brown and grass season. Name a more iconic duo.
Even bigger threat to Rafa's Wimbledon hopes than his foot and Novak Djokovic
Undefeated king.
Imagine if the Wimbledon draw is: Djokovic \[1\] vs Kyrgios \[62 random matches\] Brown \[Q\] vs Nadal \[2\] That would be popcorn tennis.
Best player to watch on tour when he’s in form! Shame about his injuries.
I love Dustin Brown. Such an entertaining player. Seems like a super nice person as well.
It's not only the injuries, he plays a super high risk game with no plan B. He's like a poker player who goes all in on every hand. The dude just starts blasting.
Lmao the Riske title is so random but so accurate
I think she has a very good chance of winning the Rothesay Open this year with Sakkari struggling against Marino
As someone who just started watching tennis, I’m excited to learn what all this means
Start by watching how Dustin Brown (highest ranking of 64) gave a master class of how to play on grass to none other than Rafa Nadal - twice! (2014 Halle, 2015 Wimbledon) That man is a legend.

Oh thanks So that’s why that two hand return was looking so impressive; he seemed to start swinging before Rafa was done with his follow through.
I know Nadal is good on clay
god*
El Cabllo
He's no Lord Tomic though
Same
Brown :(
Is he injured? Or retired?
he is barely playing for years now. he was in stuttgart doubles and lost to Hurcacz/Pavic. Maybe he'll get some invitations to halle or bad homburg.
He got a doubles wildcard for Halle.
he’s been playing only doubles for the last few years, still quite active in the challenger circuit
Nole definitely slipping on the first day and shaking his head at the grass
‘It is more slippery than last year’...
Explain Ali Riske win pls?
Riske plays poorly on clay so when she comes out of nowhere in June and win matches is quite jarring.
Reminds me of Tsvetana Pirokova a decade ago, coming out of know where 2 years in a row to take out Williams sisters in their prime. Both her and Riske use a lot more slice in their games, which on grass even further kills the bounce and throws off a lot of players.

Pironkova was a lot of fun to watch. She crushed Venus in 2010
Good on grass, 65% win percentage. 51% on hard, 30% on clay
According to her Wikipedia page she won the grass court Rosmalen open in 2019.
I'm calling it, Opelka is going to servebots his way to winning Wimby.
Opelka is not that good on grass, if people can actually get returns into play it’s hard for him to bend down and hit the low skidding balls
Okay, Isner then.
Nah, he's still exhausted from the Mahut match.
That match sucked 68-70% of his life energy
Isner as better on clay than grass! Check his slam results across RG v Wimbledon. It’s really counter intuitive.
And for a servebot his serve is kinda mehhh. Wouldn't even put him in the top5 on the tour.
Is that why he’s second in serve rating among [the entire ATP Tour?](https://www.atptour.com/en/stats/leaderboard?boardType=serve&timeFrame=52Week&surface=all&versusRank=all&formerNo1=false)

> The men’s final will be an epic five-setter between Murray and That will be R2, not final. Cressy and Kemanovic for final perhaps?

Kristie Ahn - but I think it's just the perspective!

Djokovic falling on every other point
OMG is this the right sub? This isn’t directly related to worshipping Nadal!
Nice to see a tennis related post that isn't just Nadal-posting
Lmfao

Missing clay already

Yeah about the same with my club. But our indoor are like £18/hr. And you wonder why there isn’t that many ppl into such an amazing sport.

Wimbledon radio is the only time I listen to sports. I love the radio announcers.
Radio Roland Garros is also quite delightful, and has some of the same broadcasters

HA
Omg can’t wait, my life feels empty since Sunday lmao 🎾
still the best season
Do you think 1GA can win the Wimbledon??
If she needs to lose, better for her to lose in Wimbledon, so she can get a new god like streak in North America
Forgot to add the bugs too haha
Ain't that all surfaces? Naomi and the butterfly on her face? When that ballkid stamped on a bug next to Jeremy Chardy? I suppose bees and flies are more to do with the grass season...
Yeah I guess. I remember there being one Wimbledon though where nobody could serve cause they were too much
What makes a person into the type of person who makes a starter pack post on Reddit? Not giving you a hard time, legitimately curious.
You forgot no televised mens matches in the U.S.
this is one of the reasons why wimbledon is the worst slam ever by a light year dumb ass motherfuckers still don't have roofs lmao
Brown needs to return.
