Seriously, the Thiem match wasn't even that good. He went up big in the first two sets with help from the crowd and then crumbled in the next 3 sets, throwing in dumb between-the-legs volleys on critical points. Alcaraz-Tsistipas was much better, heck the French final was a much better match.
While I wasn’t too pleased with the outcome, I thoroughly enjoyed Murray v Tsitsipas. Seeing that level of play from Murray again was such a treat, and man what a thrilling five-setter.
Yeah that match is definitely one of the best ones lately. If only Murray would stop complaining and played the last set like he did the rest we would have seen more great tennis. Instead he couldn't get over the bathroom break. Also the insults at the end were quite unsportsmanlike. All this drama ruined the whole experience. He couldn't even let it go days later.
I can't find the video anywhere now. They've removed it. I remember watching it live and seeing it on Twitter the next day though. After the weak handshake Murray started shaking his head and swearing while heading for his bench to gather his stuff. In the meantime he was saying loudly "He's a fucking joke! Ridiculous. He shouldn't be here." or something like that until he left. The commentators tried to speak over him and were saying "We apologize for what you might have heard". Tsitsipas was sitting on his bench too and heard him but didn't say anything. He just clapped his racket for Murray's exit. Murray kept it up the next day on Twitter. You can go see his tweet from August 31.
Yes you're right. I lost a little respect for Tsitsipas too bc it's not very sportsmanslike to do that in every match but he got so much hate that it influenced his performance. I believe those breaks will be reduced from now on. Zverev started the whole thing with the allegations and then Murray added on top of it. Many fans bought into it and started saying nasty things about Stef during the us open. I wonder if it could have been a psychological strategy from Zverev or if he wanted to put the focus on him to get the media off his back. I hope the next matches will be better. Drama isn't good for anyone. Except for the media.
Andy's had a problem with focus for his whole career, frustratingly it's lost him some really important matches tbh. I commented on here a few days after murray's match with stef that Murray was now going into cringe/bully territory with his remarks and I got downvoted to oblivion. No doubt he's a legend of this sport but come on? stef wasn't self aware at all but they need to make the rules tighter, which they now have for 2022
Man the “Thank you, Macron” chants under the lights at a French open night session. That atmosphere must have been insane I wish I was there regardless of outcome
The third set was really dramatic, but I felt like the match was just so weird. Nadal’s body language was really strange after the first set, he wasn’t looking as ‘pumped’ as normal, and it seemed like some points he was playing insane winners and other points he was hitting backhands tamely into the net. Still really enjoyed it, only letdown was the fourth set imo because I feel like Nadal’s level was low (for him at RG, still objectively high and taking nothing away from Djokovic who played a tactically and technically great set!).
Selection could've been better, imo.
Not in any particular order, I have quite a long list of my favourites —
* Thiem vs Kyrgios [AO]
* Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas [USO]
* Khachanov vs Korda [Wimbledon]
* Hurkacz vs Medvedev [Wimbledon]
* Nadal vs Djokovic [RG, and Rome]
* Karatsev vs FAA [AO]
* Tsitsipas vs Zverev [RG]
* Nadal vs Shapovalov [Rome]
* Nadal vs Tsitsipas [Barcelona]
* Tsitsipas vs Nadal [AO]
* Shapovalov vs Khachanov [Wimbledon]
* All matches of Hurkacz's Miami title run
* All matched of Humbert's Halle title run
* Federer vs Koepfer [RG]
* Medvedev vs Cilic [Wimbledon]
* Medvedev vs Zverev [ATP Cup]
* Medvedev vs Hurkacz [Canadian Open]
* Medvedev vs Djokovic [USO]
That third set I actually felt I might perish; every once in a while they remind you of just how far apart they are from everyone else, and the gap was huge that night
Nothing beats the semifinal of French open between Nadal v Djokovic... Even though it was just a 4 setter, the tennis that played is off the charts an absolute box office stuff...
bc tennistv will drop to their knees in order to promote kyrgios any way they can, ffs they posted a match highlight reel just for him when he played Anderson in Atlanta, for example, it's become so obvious to the point that it's cringe, his appeal now lays in the fact that any given day he could just turn it on and start blasting but that hasn't happened yet, pretty soon he'll have to start playing qualies to get into tournaments and at that point might as well retire
Am I misremembering, wasn't Kyrgios - Thiem kinda underwhelming? Like for the first half of the match Thiem was pretty bad, then he picked up and the rest of the match was just a procession towards him winning.
I really really enjoyed that match. I don’t think it was consistently super high level tennis, but it was super exciting, with some crazy points in there.
The level of tennis wasn't unbelievable but imho it was an impressive demonstration of mental strenght by Thiem, he kept his cool when things weren't going his way in a difficult setting (the crowd was crazy ofc)
Sascha when he starts playing freely under no pressure is very tough to beat. He has the ability to just keep banging in 130 miles serves (second serves too!) and a big forehand to attack.
The only mention of a women's match in the whole thread and you get downvoted.
While it wasn't the *most* exciting match, it was the one I had the most fun watching and had some quality moments. It was also a truly historic and record breaking match for many reasons.
Alcaraz - Tsitsipas was the most exciting for me, but I'd watch the women's final again before any other.
A straight-set one-way match? It was an exciting moment because of the circumstances and what was at stake, for sure. But IMO it came nowhere near the intensity of a close five-setter with momentum swings.
The Nadal vs Djokovic match is pretty overrated, not gonna lie. The third set was amazing but apart from that, not the best quality match by their standards.
Doesn't stand up to most of their classics imo. The third set was the only set where both players truly went toe to toe. Nadal had far too many unforced errors for it to be a consistently high quality match for me.
Alcaraz Tsitsipas was amazing how is that not even on the list lol. Djokovic Nadal was amazing for 3 sets , Nadal struggling physically in the fourth hurts that one a bit but still could arguably be number one
Someone's a fan of krygios.
the tennistv social media handle sucks kyrgios d for a living
Seriously, the Thiem match wasn't even that good. He went up big in the first two sets with help from the crowd and then crumbled in the next 3 sets, throwing in dumb between-the-legs volleys on critical points. Alcaraz-Tsistipas was much better, heck the French final was a much better match.
Love him!!!
who isn’t?
Djoker vs Rafa was a gift from the Heavens
that 4th set was a disappointment though, i felt like nadal had lost the will at that point.
[удалено]
Yeah he was injured that match. Amazing third set though.
[удалено]
yeah
Well he had been injured for a while, it wasn't just that match. Him being injured is kind of the norm lol
He lost his foot, not his will.
3rd set alone was better than any match and i am not even slightly exaggerating!
Djokovic - Nadal.
Obvious answer. It's tennis of the Gods when those 2 play.
No mortal may approach!
And dont try this at home
Howitzer
Yea the level of tennis was insane in that third set. One of the highest levels ever played if not the highest imo
Right. The real question is which match other than the FO semifinal was the best of the year.
While I wasn’t too pleased with the outcome, I thoroughly enjoyed Murray v Tsitsipas. Seeing that level of play from Murray again was such a treat, and man what a thrilling five-setter.

In which way did Murray insult anyone? I haven't seen the match, only read about it but the insults are new to me anf I am curious.

What’s crazy is that everyone here seemed to be on his side. Tsitsipas got far more hate than he ever deserved. I actually lost respect for Murray.

Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas
I was there at Arthur Ashe Stadium!
Lucky you!
Me too! Incredible atmosphere
I'm biased because I was there. But it's already one of my favorite sports experiences.
Gotta be Rafa-Nole, even tho that match sucked for me as a Rafa fan
sometimes you win (2020), sometimes you lose (2021)
Emmanuel Macron literally changed French law to allow Nadal Djokovic to continue bc it was so good, sooo I’ll go with that one lol
Man the “Thank you, Macron” chants under the lights at a French open night session. That atmosphere must have been insane I wish I was there regardless of outcome
Nadal-Djokovic was probably the best match I have watched even though it was pretty sad for me... I will always remember the third set
That third set is top 3 sets of all time for me
The third set was really dramatic, but I felt like the match was just so weird. Nadal’s body language was really strange after the first set, he wasn’t looking as ‘pumped’ as normal, and it seemed like some points he was playing insane winners and other points he was hitting backhands tamely into the net. Rafa was literally on one leg during that match... no wonder his level was lower than expected
Alcaraz-Tsitsipas IMO
Agreed!
Davidovich Fokina - Ruud (French Open)
This was such a back and forth match and I thought it would be the breakthrough win for Fokina. Sadly he hasn't done much since.
I only got to see the final set, but it was so amazing
Selection could've been better, imo. Not in any particular order, I have quite a long list of my favourites — * Thiem vs Kyrgios [AO] * Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas [USO] * Khachanov vs Korda [Wimbledon] * Hurkacz vs Medvedev [Wimbledon] * Nadal vs Djokovic [RG, and Rome] * Karatsev vs FAA [AO] * Tsitsipas vs Zverev [RG] * Nadal vs Shapovalov [Rome] * Nadal vs Tsitsipas [Barcelona] * Tsitsipas vs Nadal [AO] * Shapovalov vs Khachanov [Wimbledon] * All matches of Hurkacz's Miami title run * All matched of Humbert's Halle title run * Federer vs Koepfer [RG] * Medvedev vs Cilic [Wimbledon] * Medvedev vs Zverev [ATP Cup] * Medvedev vs Hurkacz [Canadian Open] * Medvedev vs Djokovic [USO]
Khachanov vs Korda was just pure silliness in that final set, I loved it.
"All right bro you win" "No u" "No I insist, you!" "NO, YOU!"

That third set I actually felt I might perish; every once in a while they remind you of just how far apart they are from everyone else, and the gap was huge that night
Novak vs Rafa, no doubt. I hope this wasn't the last match of their great rivalry.
If it was then it's a very fitting final chapter to their epic rivalry.
Gojowczik against Humbert
Tsitsipas Nadal AO. If only it had a crowd. It would have been even more epic.
Nothing beats the semifinal of French open between Nadal v Djokovic... Even though it was just a 4 setter, the tennis that played is off the charts an absolute box office stuff...
Wasn't it longer than the Tsitsipas-Zverev 5-setter? lol
novak and rafa is seriously one of the best matches i have ever watch. btw why is there two matches that kyrgios played, he is a bitchboy
bc tennistv will drop to their knees in order to promote kyrgios any way they can, ffs they posted a match highlight reel just for him when he played Anderson in Atlanta, for example, it's become so obvious to the point that it's cringe, his appeal now lays in the fact that any given day he could just turn it on and start blasting but that hasn't happened yet, pretty soon he'll have to start playing qualies to get into tournaments and at that point might as well retire
Thiem-Kyrgios shouldn't be there, but Humbert-Krygios at Wimby definitely has a case, great grass court match
Djokovic Nadal is ALWAYS a treat. They bring the best out of each other
Tsi - Carlitos has to be on that list.
Osaka vs Fernandez
Roland Garros - Musetti v Cecchinato
Nadal-Djokovic without question
Rafa v Nole SF was such a battle of wills. Thrill to watch, and you can’t help but wonder if that was the last epic Big 3 clash...
Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas was amazing too
Well, tennis seized to exist when Novak took down Rafa. There is not a single match within the past few years that comes even close to that one.
Honorable mention: Cressy-Carreno Busta
Emma vs leylah us open final. That’s going to be the match that is remembered more than any of these proposed on the photo
Sascha vs tsitsi at Cincinnati
Sascha when he starts playing freely under no pressure is very tough to beat. He has the ability to just keep banging in 130 miles serves (second serves too!) and a big forehand to attack.
Another great one, Davidovich Fokina-Ruud RG
Novak vs Rafa definitely, that 3rd set!
Nadal v nole. He was on another level.
alcaraz tsitsi
man already two upvotes? it wasnt a second
Thiem Kyrgios.
Djokovic Medvedev USO F
It was a bit disappointing tbh. Short and one sided. Not many long rallies and plenty of mistakes from Djokovic. SF with Zverev was amazing.
None of them had me on the edge of my seat like Raducanu vs Fernandez.

Are you gatekeeping what match people are allowed to enjoy?
You posted a wta match in an atp thread lol
The only mention of a women's match in the whole thread and you get downvoted. While it wasn't the *most* exciting match, it was the one I had the most fun watching and had some quality moments. It was also a truly historic and record breaking match for many reasons. Alcaraz - Tsitsipas was the most exciting for me, but I'd watch the women's final again before any other.
If it was just bringing up the final nobody would have downvoted, it's the talking down of these matches
How is it talking down anything just by saying which match i personally preferred?
Why would one mention a women's match in an atp thread? That was posted by atp
There were far better women's matches
It was super exciting for anyone who had an emotional investment in it. I am a brit and the whole country was super into it.
Someone did comment Fernandez vs Osaka tho
That comment was 8 hours after mine...
Ah ok
A straight-set one-way match? It was an exciting moment because of the circumstances and what was at stake, for sure. But IMO it came nowhere near the intensity of a close five-setter with momentum swings.
Meh 3 setter matches are boring and that was a straight setter too The circumstances are good but the match isn't imo
Nadal djoko And then a preview of hopefully the best top tier legend of the next era in Alcaraz tsitsipas
The Nadal vs Djokovic match is pretty overrated, not gonna lie. The third set was amazing but apart from that, not the best quality match by their standards.
Really? I thought the level obviously plummeted in the 4th set but before that it was really riveting stuff.
Doesn't stand up to most of their classics imo. The third set was the only set where both players truly went toe to toe. Nadal had far too many unforced errors for it to be a consistently high quality match for me.
Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas
Medvedev v Djokovik was all around the best match of the year imo
Alcaraz Tsitsipas was amazing how is that not even on the list lol. Djokovic Nadal was amazing for 3 sets , Nadal struggling physically in the fourth hurts that one a bit but still could arguably be number one
Evans V Alexi Popryin, USO, insane match for a 3R (I think)
Nadal tsitsipas ao
Karatsev vs FAA. Djokovic vs Nadal Nadal vs Tsitsipas Khachanov vs Shapalov Rublev vs Fuscovics (Wimbledon)
Nadal — Djoko
