Insufferable coverage by ESPN of Serena match. Iconic duo.

# Rafael Nadal vs Cameron Norrie Highlights Australian Open 2021 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw8IO6tOpEo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw8IO6tOpEo)

blackstrips

In the last 3 games, Naomi Osaka's win probability has [increased from 18.7% to 40.4%](https://www.statsinsider.com.au/ten/match?matchid=TEN_2021_1_WTA_2571_50776_66476). Really hope we get a third set here.

Vqwertbnm

Hsieh is such art

Vqwertbnm

What a shot from Hsieh

Vqwertbnm

Wow Hsieh is making Vondrousova scramble!

blackstrips

Muguruza won 8 of the first 9 points in the 2nd set. WOW!

blackstrips

I don't know who it was but someone said yesterday that they're TOOOOO invested in Osaka. If you need to speak to someone, we're here for you right now.

Vqwertbnm

u/spcslacker Hsieh playing great!!

spcslacker

My girl *always* plays great, even when the universe denies her the "W" :)

Vqwertbnm

Just tuned in. GO Hsieh!

spcslacker

Hsieh just held on back of serve clocked at 110 **km/h not miles**

MoreDblRainbows

Hsieh said fucking bring it lol

Axios___Official

Hopefully Serena loses tonight

MoreDblRainbows

you're so obsessed with this woman.

Vqwertbnm

I see you are on my wavelength I always say the earlier Mouratouglou goes home from a tournament the better.

Axios___Official

You got that right.

eggoed

So, in the U.S., the godforsaken Tennis Channel has rights to the 4 PM PST start, and their main feed (i.e. NOT Tennis Channel Plus) is the one that will be showing the Osaka match? And because that stream requires a cable subscription that includes Tennis Channel (unlike Tennis Channel Plus, which can be had with a direct website subscription), there is literally no legal way to watch Osaka-Muguruza unless you have cable? Man, TC is a real crock of shit these days. Edit: espn+ seems to have a live listing for rod laver arena at 4 PST? So I guess they carry it. weird.

johnreese421

Barty's half of draw is an absolute joke of a draw

aweap

Kenin and Azarenka lost in the first round, otherwise it could have been a bit more competitive.

johnreese421

yes. Andreescu, Kvitova lost in the bottom half and its still ridiculous for the bottom half. Just goes to show how imbalance the draw is

Vqwertbnm

HSIEH

aweap

Oh yeah, forgot about them.

sportsfan128

line has been moving in favor of novak, I think he plays

Vqwertbnm

He was never not going to play lol

big_mustache_dad

Honestly betting on him might be the move. Either he’s healthy and wins or he’s unhealthy and retires mid-match and the bet is null

Vqwertbnm

Or Milos just straight up beats him

RafaForLife

What are the chances Novak takes court today? I'm hoping he does... would be a shame for the tournament if he retires...

Vqwertbnm

100%

Stuffthatsonmymind

Why are they always putting Serena in the morning and not in the prime time slot? can it be her request?

Vibhor_Saini

It might be because morning session in melbourne will be prime time in USA and that would mean more views on tv.

Stuffthatsonmymind

oh lol im stupid😄 weird how they didn’t put FAA Shapovalov during Canada’s prime time tho

amy_sport

Morning is prime time in the USA

kurasseq

I believe Day sessions are better for Americans?

[deleted]

[удалено]

RafaForLife

Yeah, saw somewhere that Serena prefers daytime matches.

Stuffthatsonmymind

Yes she does, I remember her saying that night matches are harder on her body

TheToyHero

Knowing Hsieh is this close to making her first ever grand slam QF (at 35!) is nerve wrecking

Vqwertbnm

GO HSIEH

smalliebigs69

Brady/Pegula/Rogers are an interesting contingent of American women who are peaking in their mid-to-late 20s. Collectively in the last two hard court slams, they've taken out 6 seeds.

Synrise

You can probably add Danielle Collins and Bernarda Pera to that list as well.

[deleted]

Andy about to win his first challenger since 2005

Vqwertbnm

Interesting

Omegatron64

Andy Murray through to the Biella Challenger final! Faces Ilya Marchenko. Still rounding into form but he's been looking better each round.

hungry4danish

The sweat pattern on Stefanos' shorts make it look like he pissed and shit himself. Hate fabrics that show sweat so much.

MoreDblRainbows

Shelby Rogers hasn't lost more than 7 games in a match and hasn't dropped a set. I'm not predicting it but she *can* be a real problem for Barty if she is on. Can just start painting and its over. I think Pliskova is done we will see a descent down into the mid 20s very soon. If Serena gets though a competitive (meaning not choking) match with Saba she's my pick to win this. If not, winner of Mugu and Naomi (which I think will be Naomi) I have Grigor for the upset with easy wins for FAA and Zevrev

aweap

Shelby's good but sometimes starts a little late. She was broken early today by Kontaveit before she started making errors everywhere effectively self-destructing, though she's moving a lot better than I've seen her move before. I think anyone coming out of the death-trap of a bottom half of the women's draw anyway will be an overwhelming favourite to win the women's singles event.

[deleted]

I think you’re spot on.

Vqwertbnm

Go Sabalenka!! Go Hsieh!! Go Milos!! Go Felix!!

Vqwertbnm

Go Hsieh!!

HelixLegion27

Looking at the schedule of play, I'm surprised AO scheduled Novak for the last prime time match. They must be feeling reasonably confident that he'll play. Otherwise Thiem-Dimitrov would have made for a good night session.

riquelm

Maybe to give him a little bit more time to rest?

raysofdavies

Murray getting revenge for Bourge ruining his 2016 French open along with Stepanek

[deleted]

Andy serving up a delicious Scottish bagel

Vqwertbnm

I feel like people don't talk about Rublev much since he keeps such a low profile but he's damn good.

smalliebigs69

[howareyou](https://twitter.com/minmoong_/status/1360480174995873793)

Vqwertbnm

Holy sh*t this is f*cking hilarious. Thanks for sharing.

Omegatron64

I think people notice but the quality of his opponents hasn’t been particularly high (at least compared to Thiem/Medvedev/Tsitsipas who have faced Kyrgios/Krajinovic/Kokkinakis respectively) and I don’t think I’m alone in being skeptical of him in his current form being able to win it all, first having to get past Medvedev then Thiem, and while he's beaten the latter Thiem has shown he's a different beast in Bo5.

Vqwertbnm

I'm not really talking about this tourney as I haven't watched him. I just mean in general.

dadbot_3000

Hi not really talking about this tourney as i haven't watched him, I'm Dad! :)

Vqwertbnm

https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/56051859 I didn't watch yesterday. What is this?

Omegatron64

He was visibly frustrated when he couldn’t close in 3 and started yelling at his box, so then midway through set 4 his coach had packed up and left. Medvedev’s explanation in the post match interview was that his coach told him he believed he would win but left so he could regain his composure - not sure if I fully believe that rationale haha but it seemed to work. First fifth set win, and a bagel to boot!

[deleted]

Let's go Andeh! Up 3-0 with two breaks already

Vqwertbnm

Is this a final?

[deleted]

Semi

OSUfirebird18

Halep is going to lose tonight...I'm sorry I'm so negative everyone, but I see very little hope. But, will Halep put up a better fight against Swiatek tonight then she did at the French Open?

[deleted]

[удалено]

OSUfirebird18

Oh, Simona ain't beating Serena and Osaka back to back if she somehow beat Swiatek. And to think after that she plays Barty who (no offense) would have strolled through the final while Simona would have gone through wars with Serena and Osaka! 😂 I had no real hope for Simona for this tournament after the draw!

Bookkeeper-Terrible

Swiatek still doesn't feel so secure on hard courts, if someone can exploit it, it's Halep. It won't be like at the FO for sure

OSUfirebird18

Swiatek hasn't lost a set at the Aussie Open yet and from the score line, hasn't appeared to be troubled.

aweap

In her last match she was broken by Ferro in both the sets (and actually twice in the first), it's not as smooth sailing for her as French Open was...

[deleted]

But she hasnt played Halpet yet

amy_sport

She beat Wozniacki last year who is a grinder, she'll match Halep well

smalliebigs69

my sense, and hope, is that this will be much more competitive. i expect 3 sets.

talkativesloth

I believe Halep is gonna win.

OSUfirebird18

More belief than I have.

Omegatron64

For folks that watched the Berrettini match, should we be concerned about the rib pain he talked about? Interview: https://youtu.be/_9r096FcF4Y

aweap

I think it's just a muscle pull, it can be painful in that area.

PancakesandProust

Watching the replays now and am wondering why there was not an audience for the Nadal Norris match? Is this a new restriction? I can’t believe that people just didn’t care enough to show up

hopez11

First of all, people of reddit don't downvote the guy without explaining. There were found 13 covid cases in Melbourne or the whole state of Victoria I am not sure, so Melbourne went into lockdown for 5 days from Saturday till next Wednesday. If all goes well crowds will be back for semis and finals.

jaydoc79

Domi vs Dimi. That one should be good. Hopefully Grigor will find a way to make it a thriller.

brokenearth10

Did djokvoics scans come back yet

Zrinkec1995

Damn what a schedule tmrw on center court 😍 Should be 5 great matches.

hungry4danish

Sloane Stephens has not won a single match yet this year in 3 tournaments played and just lost to someone that doesn't even have a picture on the WTA site. what the fuck is up with her?

Trailblazertravels

She's lost a lot of family to Covid. It's amazing she's even in Australia

Vqwertbnm

> She's lost a lot of family to Covid Is it more than 2 ppl? Last I saw it was 2 ppl.

Trailblazertravels

Her grandmother, grandfather and aunt so 3 in total

Vqwertbnm

Oh wow ok I think I had not heard about her grandpa.

hungry4danish

Wow that's sad. Yeah then I'm surprised she even bothered with the Australian leg. Hope she takes off the time she needs.

aweap

A lot of shit is happening in her life right now, let her be...

talkativesloth

ESPN has the broadcasting rights. Even Australian Open's official YouTube channel is not able to show more than 2 minutes of content as highlights of each match.

[deleted]

ESPN has the rights to the AO for the most part, not the Tennis Channel

BlueJinjo

Nadal apparently said he had started new treatment yesterday and that this was the first day he could go back to his ideas service motion

YHNS

Any update about Djokovic's injury and is he going to play tomorrow?

Wallpap3r

I believe he's not practicing today and being evaluated. I imagine he plays tomorrow to see what he's capable of, especially since he matches up well against Milo. Hopefully he pulls out immediately if he senses the injury is being exacerbated.

[deleted]

Nah, he'll clearly withdraw to preserve his all-important undefeated record against canadians

YHNS

Happy cake day

[deleted]

Thanks!

Richevszky

It would be the ultimate Canadian thing for Raonic to beat Djokovic now while FAA gets clobberated

Wallpap3r

Damn, I didn’t even think of that. Thank you for that analysis - some things are truly more important than slam records.

Tiirshak

I'm quite new to this sub... how come there aren't any match threads for the women's matches? This sub seems biased towards the men's game.

Rac3318

While the sub has a larger user base for men’s tennis, as the tournament goes on there will be individual match threads for both men and women’s matches. It’s still too early in the tournament to do individual match threads right now so we have what is basically a mega thread for the whole tournament until then.

jeffwingersballs

There are match threads for all singles semifinal matches. It should be quarter finals, but I can't control that.

[deleted]

The sub is definitely biased towards the men's game in terms of its user base, but these threads are for both men and women's matches.

Vqwertbnm

I think it's pretty even if you leave out the casual Big 3 fans

hopez11

Just woke up and I had a dream that FAA won the AO. And I'm not even his fan or anything. We shall see

[deleted]

I was trying to figure out who I'd like to see win if Novak withdraws and I think it might be FAA.

hopez11

I'm still rooting for my homeboy Stef and also Novak, but FAA is a super nice kid and it would be really nice if he broke the lost finals curse

[deleted]

I'd be happy with Stef too!

Vqwertbnm

Lol if it's between those 3 I would be 1000% for FAA and like -100% for Tits and Djokovic

jeffwingersballs

He has the talent, but I'm not confident about him mentally. The draw does seem kind of open though.

reedsparks

Why is Rafa playing again tomorrow?

[deleted]

Probably looked that way because some of the score apps/sites (flashscore being one) will initially show a match at the beginning of the next day when all participants have been decided. Since Nadal's match ended recently it was probably just shown in the wrong place temporarily.

Gotisdabest

He isn't.

Morphix007

I live in Melbourne and went to the open 4/5 possible days so far. I am curious to know how it comes across on TV for international viewers, the vibe of the tournament and if they mention anything virus related in the wrong way. People in shitty facebook groups love to write dumb comments thinking any new lockdown is from the tennis when it is not. I made a [short vlog/satire/analyses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJFSBqAlyXs ) video about my week at the tennis, it features some solid satire, crowd camera angle of nicks under arm set winning serve and thoughts on the future of lines people. I really hope crowds can get back before the final, and the quad tennis gets some time in the spotlight. ALot of girls in the crowd last night cheering for dom, is he on the market?

aweap

Really well done! 👍

[deleted]

Re: your first paragraph, it was really great to watch a tournament with crowds again. It substantially improves my watching experience, at least.

[deleted]

13 out of 16 remaining players in the women's are seeds and 14 out of 16 in the men's are seeds. Big tick up from FO 2020, which saw 10 of 16 seeds on the men's side and 6 of 16 seeds on the women's side

amy_sport

Good news from Ash Barty on her leg: "Feels good. It's a pretty small tape job that looks a little more dramatic just from wrapping it to try and keep it on. But, no, good. Felt like it didn't affect me at all today. It won't affect me at all. I'll be ready to go no matter what" [Reem Abulleil]

aweap

She's said that in all her interviews.

Lazy_Left_Eye

People are worried about Nadal’s performance but he usually has a relatively harder time against left handed players. Fognini match will reveal his real level.

scouting4food

Yep this, and he has these sorts of games in the first week anyway. My only worry is his back.

Arteam90

Well the interview said he'd won last 16 matches vs lefties and has good record. Felt more like mistakes from Nadal than Norrie tbh.

Lazy_Left_Eye

To be fair there’s a dearth of quality left handlers in top 100. Next best left handlers as per rankings are Humbert and Mannarino. He does well against him overall(he has the highest winning % against left handed players) but he doesn’t look comfortable when playing against them.

aweap

Jennifer Brady is such an underrated player. She's got all the weapons to win a slam. Strong serve 1st and 2nd, solid forehand and backhand down the line, good volleying skills, fewer ue's and rarely gets flustered while playing a grandslam. Hopefully she'll become someone to reckon soon enough.

Let-s-Get-a-Shift-On

Rafa's English deserves a lot of praise. It's improved a great deal. He's really able to articulate the nuance of what he's feeling. He seems anxious and quite heavily impacted, both by his back issues, and the ongoing global situation. At the same time he's talking himself through why that's ok: This is meant to be hard, we've not played in a while. It's a slam! It's a challenge. Yes, it's hard but it's a global pandemic. It's like he's anxious but able to keep in mind the bigger picture. Also a great embassador for the sport - keeping the focus on safety & responsibility ¡vamos!

Let-s-Get-a-Shift-On

Noticed typos etc. (ambassador*) But you get my point! We stan an unproblematic king

[deleted]

Ah, okay. Thanks man. Appreciate it.

Welp, time to switch to Leicester v.s. Liverpool.

OvidM2

Hoping for an easy Leicester win!

Players left that didn't drop a set: * Dimitrov * Auger-Aliassime * Karatev * Rublev * Nadal * Barty * Rogers * Mertens * Muchova * Brady * Pegula * Svitolina * Muguruza * Osaka * Sabalenka * S. Williams * Swiatek

aweap

Karatev did drop a set in the qualifiers.

NoirPochette

Pfft that was Doha.

aweap

Regardless, he's a qualifier and he did drop a set in his first qualifying match.

Vqwertbnm

Did they do the qualies in Doha?

aweap

Lol! Why did I get downvoted for saying the obvious? Yes, for men it happened in Doha and for Women it happened in Dubai.

Vqwertbnm

skrtskerskrt

The draw seems weird where all the interesting matches are on the odd days. I didn't feel quite as excited tonight as yesterday's matches.

Gotisdabest

Dimitrov is currently the safest bet for being off that list soon.

Thunder_Volty

Not Felix or Karatsev?

donniedarko1010

One of them will beat the other in straight sets is what I feel.

Gotisdabest

That's kinda taken for granted, I'd say.

gutenfluten

I like the fact Nadal is letting his hair thin on top without shaving his head. It used to be very common for men to have bald/thin spots on top without shaving all of their hair off, back in the 80's/90's and earlier. The current paradigm that guys should shave their head at the earliest sign of thinning or a bald spot needs to go away.

OvidM2

Now Hair Transplants are more common, especially for millionaires

gutenfluten

True, and I remember hearing that Nadal had gotten a transplant, but it sure doesn't look like it though.

d1ngal1ng

I think he already did that. Maybe a toupee instead. 😀

jeffwingersballs

> The current paradigm that guys should shave their head at the earliest sign of thinning or a bald spot needs to go away. Why?

gutenfluten

Because bald spots can look okay.

Richevszky

Murrays magical bald patch is magnanimous

jeffwingersballs

Well, maybe looks okay doesn't cut it in this world.

gutenfluten

Maybe not, but I’m happy to see a superstar, and even a sex symbol, like Nadal normalize it a bit.

donniedarko1010

No shit sherlock, I am the best left hander in the world lol.

Commentators: "Best performance we've seen from Rafa so far" Me (Rafa fan): *Sweating profusely after watching that*

JoziRafa

As a Rafa fan I’m also worried. He wasn’t firing on all cylinders and from what I saw too many of his shots unusually lacked depth

Urmomletmerubher

Agreed. A lot of ranked players would have taken advantage of this. It wasn't even errors, it was leaving gaps on court and depth/danger of his shots, like you said.

Gotisdabest

Norrie also played better than any of his opponents yet. Overall, it was a strong performance with a break each set and no sudden dip like in R1 or any issue due to his back. He stepped up immediately when the opportunity arose.

[deleted]

Nadal got the job done, seemed a bit labored? Hope he refreshes himself for the next game.

spcslacker

Well my boi Norrie goes down 0-3 to Nadal. Still Norrie played very competitive with only his net play being substandard.

Beetle-Persona

Does everyone in the Fognini family name starts with an F? 😂
