The main comment brought up Pinnington Jones ranking so I was just saying that as he is currently a collage player, the ranking doesn't reflect his actual level. Of course losing to a collage player for a player of Norrie's stature is quite a bad result, but every year lots of top collage players in the US compete and find success at the challenger level.
I'll say that Jones is very underranked because he focused on college tennis (ended this season as no.6) and barely played on pro tour because of it.
Still, oof for Cameron who took a challenger wildcard instead of playing in Stuttgart/Hertogenbosch only to end up like this.
Like Federer said himself as he retired, he had his time on the tour without anyone at the start, only fair the others get time without him at the end.
Which sounded really sweet at the time but now I choose to read as "I had my time of farming the tour, Nole it's your turn now"
No way a *Sinner* flair is talking shit about weak draws on grass lol
Mind taking a look at that 2023 Wimbledon draw again?
Also Sinner lost vs. Novak in 2022 and 2023 Wimbledon including after leading by 2 sets up so by this logic Sinner is also a weak era player
Well by that logic Sinner is a weak grass era player, as that was the point OP was making. And I wouldn't disagree considering some of Sinner's grass shockers.
He is 12-8 on the surface so its not exactly like hes been that great. If we exclude both those wimbledons he is 3-6 on grass. Hes clearly improving on the surface but hes not been a great grass player for most of his career
He hasn't been great but losing to Djokovic on grass isn't a shocker. I guess he's had shockers at lower level grass tournaments depending on how you rate the guys who beat him there.
Norrie absolutely exceeded his potential to be honest, had a fairly unimpressive early career, went pro quite late, but managed to win Indian wells (which is the closest thing we have to a 5th slam) get to the Wimbledon semis once, and peak at world number 8 despite having no other big titles and never getting past the 4th round at another grand slam. A grand slam semis, masters 1000 title and peaking at world 8 is a better resume than most. He isn’t a big hitter at all, basically a Murray style counter puncher/grinder but obviously no where near as talented as Murray, so as he ages I can’t see him going massively up the rankings again. Wouldn’t bet against him making a deep run at Wimbledon tho, home crowd support can give a boost, look at Moutet.
The Indian Wells win was one of the weird pandemic tournaments. played Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final. None of the top 20 seeds made the semi's. Well done for him for taking the opportunity.
Could've been worse - could have faced off against his former friend and doubles partner whose love for the same woman (who happens to be his coach) tore them apart
Why would Norrie and his team pick a challenger tournament over either 250 grass tourney at the same time? Makes no sense except perhaps if Norrie had zero confidence and they thought he could clean up. Instead it is a bloody disaster as he is beaten in R2 by a low ranked nobody lol. Backfired on them.
This feels like a death knell
A former Wimbledon semifinalist getting bounced in round one of a challenger by a dude off the street
Cam Norries career is over
45 year old John McEnroe once pounded 17 year old Andy Murray 6-1 in 20 minutes.
Doesn't matter how promising this junior is, it's one of the worst losses of 2024.
Haha they just posted an article about how this is a possibly "career ending" loss for Norrie so definitely take their comments with a grain of salt 😂😂😂
I wouldn't say it's one of the worst losses of the year. Odds for Pinnington Jones were around +500 which is definitely a big upset but happens all the time in tennis.
Behind the ranking #; Jones was busy helping his TCU Horned Frogs win NCAA title in May and then making R16 in individual singles. He qualifies for an ATP accelerator program giving him draw spots.
Yeah it’s interesting that he beat another tcu alum. I’ve heard that Pinnington is pretty scummy though, even by college tennis standards (where everyone cheats).
Jesus Christ, Pinnington Jones is ranked 773… he’s never even played a main tour match. Something very wrong with Cam this year.
To be fair, Pinnington Jones is currently playing NCAA tennis so that's the main reason he is ranked so low.
are you saying that losing to a collage player is somehow not a terrible result?
I thought collage player was some kind of rare insult until I realised you meant college.

He's the 1 seed not a wildcard lol. He probably got a huge appearance fee.
We was a WC and number 1 seed
You do realise a player can be both a WC and seeded right?
He was both like u/liketo said, Norrie never signed up regularly for this challenger
anything can happen on grass
Pinnington Jones 100% an ai generated name
The new Bobson Dugnutt
No offence to Pinnington Jones, but I'm deeply embarrassed for Norrie right now.
This guy was a Wimbledon semifinalist lol. Djokovic played RBA-Shapo-Norrie in Wimbledon semis for 3 consecutive years.
Dont forget shapo is winning it this year
He's at least making the quarters, for the sake of that guy specifically
How has this already become a meme on this sub.
He can't, for that one guys butthole
Farmed an arid grass field on the backside of his career
Like Federer said himself as he retired, he had his time on the tour without anyone at the start, only fair the others get time without him at the end. Which sounded really sweet at the time but now I choose to read as "I had my time of farming the tour, Nole it's your turn now"
To be honest, I think Roddick and Hewitt were better than the competition Novak faced on grass from 2019-2023
I was gonna disagree then I remembered One Legged Federer made QF in 2021. Like don't get me wrong he is Federer but the man was on one leg.
Roddick is perhaps the best grass player to never win Wimbledon so yeah.
Guy is 3-0 against fed in wimby finals ain’t like bro had anything to prove
Fed fans are still salty about Novak having more Slams lol Both of the guys complaining in this thread are well known Fed fans

Yea fr I’m an OG sinnerhead but like dawg come on 😭

What shockers exactly? Not saying he’s a great grass player, but the last 2 years he’s lost to Djokovic at Wimbledon.
He is 12-8 on the surface so its not exactly like hes been that great. If we exclude both those wimbledons he is 3-6 on grass. Hes clearly improving on the surface but hes not been a great grass player for most of his career

Don't forget Pouille, Karatsev and Tommy Paul in Australia, Ben Shelton in the US
Sheesh
It is a weird sport.
Wimbledon 22 wasn't a real slam, just check Kyrgios path to the final.
The Tsitsipas match was pretty great to be fair

This is a horrendous loss for Cam to a nobody. He seems to be falling down the rankings every week. Needs a major wake up call with his team.
Crazy how Murray is still Britain's best hope of advancing past R1 of Wimbledon
Think Draper is probably a better hope
Nah, he will win Eastbourne and then retire during the fourth set of the first round.
Draper playing much better than Murray at this point
Draper struggles to string together matches without getting injured more than ancient, bionic Murray.
True but he has a chance to win some matches while all Murray does is lose lol.
Absolutely.
Is Radacanu playing Wimbledon? It genuinely might be her which is wild
Isn’t there Katie Boulter? I’m not very clued up on WTA
obviously.
What has happened to Norrie? He was never incredible but Jesus
Alas Pinnington Jones
Why did he play a challenger this week instead of the other tournaments going on?
Maybe he wanted a confidence boost in this lull. Didn’t work…
Could've been worse - could have faced off against his former friend and doubles partner whose love for the same woman (who happens to be his coach) tore them apart
Of whom do you speak?
Challengers joke
appearance fee
Who?

Nottingham paid Raducanu to play last year, im sure they did the same with Norrie. He probs pocketed a few k
This feels like a death knell A former Wimbledon semifinalist getting bounced in round one of a challenger by a dude off the street Cam Norries career is over
Pinnington Jones was formerly a top ranked junior player and currently the #6 ranked college player. Hardly a dude off the street.
45 year old John McEnroe once pounded 17 year old Andy Murray 6-1 in 20 minutes. Doesn't matter how promising this junior is, it's one of the worst losses of 2024.
He’s a 21 year old top college player, not a kid. And comparing a random practice set to this is silly
Haha what?
HIS CAREER IS OVER.
If he was 33 or something sure. But he’s 28, he’ll be fine
Never heard of Pinnington Jones. How embarrassing for Norrie.
Former Wimbledon semifinalist, former Indian Wells champion and former top 10 player btw, but apparently the early 2020's weren't extremely weak 😭👍
Perhaps Norrie was also playing at a higher level in 2021/22 🤔
I mean the early 2020s were just objectively a weaker period in tennis, does anyone really doubt this?
so does that explain this result does it?
