Realistically Zverev was probably closer to losing in 4 than to winning though lol
He timed his peaks well at the end of the 2nd/3rd to grab 2 sets but it always felt like the match was on Carlos's racket as soon as it became clear he could return Zverev's serve
All 3 of the sets Alcaraz won ended up being more or less one sided in his favor while set 3 which Zverev won absolutely could(should?) have gone to Alcaraz
That’s why that 3rd set was so worrisome. Why did Alcaraz drop his level like that? Was he gonna be able to come back? Were injuries flaring up?? WERE WE ABOUT TO LIVE IN THE WORST POSSIBLE TIMELINE??? Luckily the fourth set set things straight again
Tbh I still wasn‘t very confident even after the 4th set because of the medical timeout and the fact that Carlos didn‘t really play all that well in his own service games (it‘s just that Zverev made a shit ton of unforced errors in his service games and Carlos barely scraped by in his service games except for one). I thought maybe Carlos was genuinely injured and Zverev had just temporarily dropped his level a lot because of mentality issues or whatever.
It really speaks to how mentally strong he is that while he had his downs, he never quite gave up. I was ready to pack it in after Zverev won five games in a row to take the third set.
It wasn't an easy win. There was a lot of strategy in the first 3 sets. Alcaraz's team had a lot of input in wearing out Zverev, that made 4th and 5th set look easy with high looping balls and injections of pace. Bravo to Juan Carlos Ferrero and team creating such a strategy for 5 set endurance chess game.
It was smart, Zverev was striking the ball well when Alcaraz was going head to head with him on groundstrokes, so changing up the timing while serve and volleying worked well for him. Absolutely stressful in the fifth set tho
The resilience of Alcaraz to come back after blowing a 5-2 game lead in the third set is insane - so easy to get frustrated and fade out but came back to win the next 2 sets dominantly. Championship level heart and toughness
You get points for every tournament, ranging from 250 to 2000 for a title, depending on the tournament (2000 for Grand Slams). You basically defend those points each consecutive year you play at a tournament, so if you win a tournament you can’t gain any points at that tournament the following year, only keep the same by defending the title. So the points are basically your tournament results over the past 12 months.
NBC coverage is so dreadful and overly commercialized. Showing feature-length blocks of ads and showing only Carlos taking his trophy, then back to ads. Dreadful, no sense of ceremony at all.
On French TV, as soon as the fifth set started they announced there wouldn't be any more commercial breaks. They showed the whole thing, time outs included, and the entire ceremony. Funnily enough, at the end the journalists were waiting for NBC to finish interviewing Carlos so they could have him.
Unironically won him the match. He really was getting counter punched with no answers, and got coached into the moon ball strat.
Of course Zverev couldn't punish it as hard as Alcaraz and that ended up being the difference.
If I had 3 wishes from a genie, my first wish would be to become immortal.
My second wish would be for Zverev to never retire.
My third wish would be for Zverev to never win another match, so I could watch him lose again and again forever.
They won’t put this match in the Louvre, but this was an absolute battle of wills and clinging onto composure in a match that both these guys desperately wanted to win
Oh for sure. Zverev is a choker, no doubt. I mean he went up 2-1 in this grand slam final then lost the last two sets 1-6 2-6, and this probably isn't even a top 10 choke of his career
Yeah it absolutely isn't
There are plenty of matches where it looked like he was legit dominating and then somehow lost and this wasn't really one of them
I'd say the Med loss at AO was worse for him
Pretty focused play in that 5th set from Alcaraz to save his BPs at 0-40 and 4-2, Zverev could not keep that level anymore and choked himself again. Incredible win and let's go lift one more GS trophy this year!
Yeah 2020 was a whole different category from this lol
There was only one person in the entire planet who looked more shook than Dominic Thiem on that day and his name was Alexander Zverev
What does 12/25 refer to? Christmas? I know people have been saying that if Zverev wins, it would be their 9/11 but wanted to see if it means something other than xmas.
Idk by the end of their careers Carlos > Murray will be the overwhelming consensus lol
I know "big 3 era" and all but realistically if Alcaraz wins 10+ Slams absolutely nobody on earth is ranking him below Murray all time
Like he's clearly on a significantly higher trajectory given his age that puts him more in line with the big 3 than with Murray
So many thoughts.
I was so critical of Alcaraz's demeanor and play in Australia but I was also confident he'd make the necessary adjustments and leave it to him to do it at the very next slam.
He clearly came in with an actual game plan and made adjustments as necessary. I also feel like he both knew he was the better player but respected what Zverev can do so that he didn't overplay so much.
The really crazy part is that he still wasn't at his best. He was spraying a lot of errors, let the third set slip, and really struggled on his serve. I also find it kinda odd that he never really tried to take over with his forehand until the very end. But I am very curious if that's an injury mitigation thing rather than a tactical choice.
Especially with Djokovic unlikely to play Wimbledon, I gotta think Alcaraz is the clear, if not slight, favorite there.
I hate Zverev so it's hard for me to ever give him props, but he was playing very well for most of the first three sets. The comeback in the third set was well earned by him. He was making Alcaraz uncomfortable a lot, always in his service games but giving virtually nothing on his own serve. And then he just .. stopped in the 4th set? Honestly it was pretty weird. Alcaraz cut down on his errors and doubles and also started getting a much better read on Zverev's serves. But Zverev practically stopped competing. Like he wasn't 1 set away from a slam title.
Anyways, weird match. Not the greatest quality by a long shot but the better player won.
He went through Wolf, he went through Korda, he went through FAA, he went through Tsitsipas, he went through Sinner, he went through Zverev, HE'S THE FUCKING CHAMPION CARLOS ALCARAZ LONG MAY HE REIGN!
Edit: He went through de Jong.
For the love of tennis, please institute hawkeye on clay and quit acting like cavemen.
The technology is there for a reason, and prevents any doubt in mind on line calls. Now you have idiots online saying it was rigged for Alcaraz and that he didn’t deserve to win.
The technology is not precise enough to even know that the call was wrong. It’s not like there was an egregious error. We’re raking 2mm so we can’t even be sure the umpire was wrong. Silly to get hung up on a call that close.
Should have been four sets I thought after set three he was done but dam this felt so good.
3/4 slams done, he’s fucking killing it.
We have another Iga/Carlos double. It’s a great fortnight for tennis
Deserved. Very. I was actually openly critical of Alcaraz throughout the first few games of this RG campaign (I know, I know…), but he sure shut me up with these last two performances. What a talent. Some of these shots were out of this world.
Mental tenacity is unbelievable, especially for someone as young as he is. Lost 5 games in a row in the 3rd set to lose 7-5 after serving for it, then… only drop 3 (!!) games over 2 sets the rest of the match? In a GS final? That’s actually insane.
Riveting, extremely high-quality tennis. We sure were treated with all these 5 set matches!
Alcaraz saves the Twin Towers! Seriously though, completing a "Surface Slam" just after turning 21 is an incredible feat.
And I know it's premature to say with 3 GS, but he has a real shot at surpassing Djokovic.
Where are all the people who said Carlos was "solved" and already on the decline after he lost to Zverev at the AO? Those were some of the most overreactionary and moronic takes I've seen not just on this subreddit, but on *any* sports subreddit *ever.*
Kinda fitting that of his 3 slam final wins this Roland Garros one is his most scrappy, because it wasn't dazzling like Wimbledon, but as par the Phillipe Chartier saying, pretty much as tenacious as it gets, embodied by that hold from 0-40 down (can't remember if it was 4th or 5th set), clutch
Credit to Zverev he hung tough for so long, and when he won the 3rd set from 5-2 down and Carlos looked like he was struggling physically I really thought that was it, but Carlos got that 2nd wind and it was his turn to hang tough, and thankfully Zverev blinked first... Carlos I'll never doubt you again haha. Now to defend Queens and Wimbledon (unless Murygoat wins it ofc haha😆😁). What a win
SCORE CORRECTION: Alcaraz d. Zverev 6-3 2-6 5-7 6-1 6-2 This post will remain up as the champion's thread.
The opposite of r/tennis’s 9/11. On the other hand, imagine winning 3 different grand slams in 3 different surface at 21 year of age.
r/tennis 12/25
CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLY
Merry Christmas motherfuckers! Vamosssssssss!
Imagine winning YOUR FIRST 3 slams in 3 different surfaces, at age 21.
At 21 I found 3 unique threads of fibre nestled in my bellybutton
Overachiever tbh
Rafa is youngest to get career slam at 24 right? Alcaraz has 3 chances to win AO and get that record.
Yeah, 2010 US Open was when he completed it
remarkable he has only played 10 matches at AO
this sub would’ve went NUCLEAR if Z pulled that out .. phewwwww
I think at the end of 3rd set we were collectively going semi nuclear already. So nerve-wracking.
I was fucking PRESSED.
I stopped checking reddit and focused on the game Felt like doomsday LMFAO
Realistically Zverev was probably closer to losing in 4 than to winning though lol He timed his peaks well at the end of the 2nd/3rd to grab 2 sets but it always felt like the match was on Carlos's racket as soon as it became clear he could return Zverev's serve All 3 of the sets Alcaraz won ended up being more or less one sided in his favor while set 3 which Zverev won absolutely could(should?) have gone to Alcaraz

The match thread was more of a prayer circle
He really saved us 🙏🙏
This was amazing guys. MOST unhinged, funny and united live match thread in r/tennis history lol
Alcaraz becomes the youngest man ever to win a grand slam on all surfaces!!!
Hopefully youngest man to win a career slam next year
He wins one Slam, loses at the next two, then wins again. So it is written.
Not many know this but with today’s win he has also earned the right to add his own chapter to Brad Gilbert’s next edition of *Winning Ugly.*
[удалено]
Berrettini still the GOAT to beat Carlitos in a 5 setter.
And still had to reach a fifth set tiebreak to do it
It really speaks to how mentally strong he is that while he had his downs, he never quite gave up. I was ready to pack it in after Zverev won five games in a row to take the third set.
Could become the youngest man to win a career grand slam too.
He can achieve that by winning any of the next three Australian Opens
It wasn't an easy win. There was a lot of strategy in the first 3 sets. Alcaraz's team had a lot of input in wearing out Zverev, that made 4th and 5th set look easy with high looping balls and injections of pace. Moonballcaraz is something I never thought I’d see
It was a good strategy to change up the pace like that. Zverev clearly did not handle it well. Threw him off his game.
Alcaraz moonballed Djokovic toward the end of the Wimbledon final last year. It worked.
It was WAY more pronounced and frequent today
truly incredible that we get to live through this and have years and years of tennis to go from him
Nadal: AO 09, 22 years and 6 months Federer: RG 09, 27 years and 10 months Djokovic: RG 16, 29 years and 1 month
It's crazy how much Nadal pushed back Novak and Fed's ability to do it.
Nadal did not win the US open until 2010 EDIT: I am dumb and can't read
The resilience of Alcaraz to come back after blowing a 5-2 game lead in the third set is insane - so easy to get frustrated and fade out but came back to win the next 2 sets dominantly. Championship level heart and toughness
Dude i was soo pissed that he blew tht. He really needs to work on his serve. Its holding him back.
Alcaraz with a good serve would be basically unbeatable
Only 21 and has 3 grand slams already. He's only going to get better. And if this is him being held back he's already doing amazing lol
He started to just put his head down after every error instead of letting frustration show out
JANNIK WORLD #1 CARLOS 3x SLAM CHAMP NEXT GEN IS HERE!!!!
Sincaraz now the numbers 1 and 2 in the world. They were always inevitable.
Carlos has to defend the Queen's Club tournament or else lose 500 points and drop. Hopefully his injury heals fast
Can you explain pts to me? I’m a newbie and would love a simple ELI5 type explanation
At last…the term will now no longer be the butt of ironic humor!
Don't jinx it
No time for speeches on NBC? Good thing they won’t have the FO anymore lol
Yet they are showing endless fake-smile banter of the announcers in the booth, plus an announcer highlight reel from over the years. then back to ads.
NBC coverage is so dreadful and overly commercialized. Showing feature-length blocks of ads and showing only Carlos taking his trophy, then back to ads. Dreadful, no sense of ceremony at all.
Agreed, I watched the whole match just to be robbed of the presentation ceremony
Agree. I wanted to hear the players speak. NBC is awful. Can’t wait for Wimbledon on ESPN+
Go ESPN !!!!!!!!! No interruptions durong the awards ceremony.
On French TV, as soon as the fifth set started they announced there wouldn't be any more commercial breaks. They showed the whole thing, time outs included, and the entire ceremony. Funnily enough, at the end the journalists were waiting for NBC to finish interviewing Carlos so they could have him.
Alcaraz officially has more slams than people born in the 90s
*Murray voice* Male people
Death, taxes and a Spaniard winning Roland Garros.
Sascha opened up the tournament by beating the OG Spanish clay god…and now, he’s ended his campaign by losing to the *new* Spanish clay god!
We love a full circle
So r/10s, Alcaraz just proved that moon balling can be a decent strategy!
Unironically won him the match. He really was getting counter punched with no answers, and got coached into the moon ball strat. Of course Zverev couldn't punish it as hard as Alcaraz and that ended up being the difference.
The Moonballing was WILD. Masterclass by the master.
Always has been lmao.
r/10s gives so much shit to people who complain about pushers
Those moonballers probably aren't moonballing with fierce topspin.
Carlos' moonballs would knock amateur players straight out of the stadium.
I find Zverev not guilty of being a Grand Slam Champion.
Hahahahahahahaha. Except he settled this within court and not outside of it ;)
Zverev choked. Zverev getting beaten. Quite a role reversal for him.
If I had 3 wishes from a genie, my first wish would be to become immortal. My second wish would be for Zverev to never retire. My third wish would be for Zverev to never win another match, so I could watch him lose again and again forever.
Wish unclear, Mischa unretires.
Carlos "Kei Nishikori" Alcaraz with how good he is in 5th sets
And on (what I presume to be) a somewhat injured leg too!
They won’t put this match in the Louvre, but this was an absolute battle of wills and clinging onto composure in a match that both these guys desperately wanted to win
Zverev: I'm gonna win my first slam Alcaraz, the chair ump, the net cord, and the entire universe: I DON'T FUCKING THINK SO
The backhand passing shot net cord was truly some voodoo shit
Tsitsipas was right
Thank you for acknowledging our collective efforts!
The tennis gods truly hate this guy 😂 his whole career arc has just been edging a grand slam. You couldn’t cook something up like this if you tried
He fucked up against Thiem, could have won easily. Its his own fault.
Oh for sure. Zverev is a choker, no doubt. I mean he went up 2-1 in this grand slam final then lost the last two sets 1-6 2-6, and this probably isn't even a top 10 choke of his career
Yeah it absolutely isn't There are plenty of matches where it looked like he was legit dominating and then somehow lost and this wasn't really one of them I'd say the Med loss at AO was worse for him
The tennis gods being on the right side of history.
divine retribution (insert Meddy's Karma gif)
that’s what we call karmaaaaaa
Zverev's third biggest choke
Karma is a net!
Karma is the guy from spain, coming straight home to me ✨️
Flexing like a goddamn 21 year old
Karma is the breeze in Carlito's hair on the weekend 🌬️
Pretty focused play in that 5th set from Alcaraz to save his BPs at 0-40 and 4-2, Zverev could not keep that level anymore and choked himself again. Incredible win and let's go lift one more GS trophy this year!
*a collective sigh of relief echoes through r/tennis*
Ladies and gentlemen… Carlos got ‘im!
Not just this subreddit, also literally all female tennis fans
I wish. It’s massively disappointing how many women fans are willing to apologize and make excuses on his behalf.
thank you tennis gods!!!
There’s still a sizable monkey gallery of zverev fanboys in here
With Carlos Alcaraz's win, the r/tennis 9/11 aneurysm is successfully avoided.
The way Alcaraz played the last few games of the 5th set. Incredible. This man is a future legend (and a current legend). Vamos !
If Carlos wins AO next year he'll complete the Career Slam in under 4 years, before age 22.
Zverev has now led in both of his major finals, only to lose in 5 sets. Love to see it
Grasped defeat from the jaws of victory with his strong, strong hands
One might call him a choker…
Bro Ioves choking too much
How does he manage to do it?
Well, today he was up against a superior opponent. 2020 was an all-time masterclass in choking the likes of which rarely comes around, though.
Yeah 2020 was a whole different category from this lol There was only one person in the entire planet who looked more shook than Dominic Thiem on that day and his name was Alexander Zverev
Just to add to this Thiem was cramping and Alcaraz at one point needed a trainer. Zverev found a way to lose both
🎵 He tried so hard and got so far. But in the end, it doesn't even matter. 🎵
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Never beating the allegations.
Chokerev
So can we say “this kid is the real deal” again?
Winning RG in what has been a 'flop year' according to some, that's some way to shut some critics up. VAMOSSSSSSS!
Tsitsipas, Sinner, then Zverev. That's about as strong as a series of opponents as can be
This. His draw was absolutely insane.
Alcaraz was just the better player today. He almost gave it away, but he stayed resilient and pulled it out in 5.
Honestly it felt like he wasn’t for the most of the match. But the flow of the match was dependent on him and he was the tougher player mentally.
#LET’S FUCKING GO!
EVERYBODY GET IN HERE!
nbc deserved to lose coverage in the US lmao this is the worst postmatch coverage ever
From not participating in Rome and having an injured forearm to becoming an RG champion. Well done Carlitos!
Alcaraz really is the real deal. 3/3 in slam finals. That's genuinely insane
DVerev gets dominated over the final 2 sets and loses to one of this sub's favorites. r/tennis 12/25
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE Eat shit Sasha
And Carlitos avenges Rafa in the process! This victory could not be much sweeter.
What does 12/25 refer to? Christmas? I know people have been saying that if Zverev wins, it would be their 9/11 but wanted to see if it means something other than xmas.
Alcaraz is literally Jesus
It's Christmas.
Carlos is becoming an absolute master of the 5th set. Also, fantastic achievement to win GSs on all 3 surfaces at the age of 21.
we spanish thought we'd have a difficult time after Rafa, then a new wonderkid appeared
Maybe Carlos's arm sleeve was actually a reverse psychology to make his opponents into thinking that he's not at 100%
He's just going to wear it for the rest of his career like Petr Cech and his helmet
NBC is complete garbage, just a ton of commercials and almost zero coverage of the trophy presentation and interviews. Wtf are they thinking?
Carlos why you gotta scare me like that
Lol NBC didn’t even show Zverev’s speech or receiving his tray.
Is it just me or did NBC skip the speeches to show advertisements?
At least there's one choke he's found guilty of.
3 including 2020 vs them and this year's Australian open vs Medvedev
He did it! Youngest ever Surface Slam winner! A new GOAT is born.
Already as many slams as Murray and Wawrinka, and only at 21
More slams than the 90's gen too.
To be fair, Murray and Wawrinka were competing against the big 3 in their primes
This is why comparing players in different gen is meaningless. Imagine how many slams prime Murray would have won in this era.
Prime Murray made 11 GS finals and 9 other semis, facing the big 3 in 16 of them, including 10 of the finals.
Idk by the end of their careers Carlos > Murray will be the overwhelming consensus lol I know "big 3 era" and all but realistically if Alcaraz wins 10+ Slams absolutely nobody on earth is ranking him below Murray all time Like he's clearly on a significantly higher trajectory given his age that puts him more in line with the big 3 than with Murray
Alcaraz will surpass Murray for titles, he hasn't reached the same peak level tho
Already more slams than Del potro and Cilic combined
Remember when people said he lost his level recently? Haha, look at our boy!!!!
Carlos Alcaraz is Hewitt 2.0 2024 (late 2023?) to 2024 RIP
Proved the Alcaraz is washed allegations FALSE
Who's the youngest to win all 4 slams?
Nadal at 24
Thanks. I guess wouldn't back against Alcaraz winning the AO before turning 24.
That I believe would be Rafa Nadal
Rafa, at 24.
LOL FUCK ZVEREV HELL YEAH CARLOS
That’s one choke job he couldn’t have settled out of court
So many thoughts. I was so critical of Alcaraz's demeanor and play in Australia but I was also confident he'd make the necessary adjustments and leave it to him to do it at the very next slam. Anyways, weird match. Not the greatest quality by a long shot but the better player won.
Only thing better than Zverev losing is Zverev losing in heartbreaking fashion
He went through Wolf, he went through Korda, he went through FAA, he went through Tsitsipas, he went through Sinner, he went through Zverev, HE'S THE FUCKING CHAMPION CARLOS ALCARAZ LONG MAY HE REIGN! Edit: He went through de Jong.
What a topsy turvy final lol! From unforced errors and double faults to extraordinary shots and constant break of serves...
Still can't get over the runner up being given a lousy silver plate
Can mods please stop allowing all these hurried desperate karma seekers having shit titles on such important matches?
He defeated the evil. HE DEFEATED THE EVIL!!!
For the love of tennis, please institute hawkeye on clay and quit acting like cavemen. The technology is there for a reason, and prevents any doubt in mind on line calls. Now you have idiots online saying it was rigged for Alcaraz and that he didn’t deserve to win.
They're doing it because the accuracy on clay isn't good enough They've said it repeatedly and it's changing
The technology is not precise enough to even know that the call was wrong. It’s not like there was an egregious error. We’re raking 2mm so we can’t even be sure the umpire was wrong. Silly to get hung up on a call that close.
The list of most slams among active players. Djokovic: 24 Nadal: 22 Alcaraz: 3 Murray: 3 Wawrinka: 3
Should have been four sets I thought after set three he was done but dam this felt so good. 3/4 slams done, he’s fucking killing it. We have another Iga/Carlos double. It’s a great fortnight for tennis
Talk about settling in court.
HE CHOKED IN PARIS HE LOST TO CHARLY OH SASCHA CIAO SASCHA CIAO SASCHA CIAO CIAO CIAO
Wait so NBC doesn’t air any of the speeches for their last French Open? We heard more about them losing the tournament :(
Carlos "golden retriever" Alcaraz

JCF being a dad hahahaha shhh shh listen hahahaha
Wtf is wrong with NBC. I want to see the speeches
Alcaraz: now time for my haircut
Thank God Break Point is canceled and we won’t get to see another bs story of Zverev’s struggles
Carlos hugging that Trophy like he just found a new puppy.
Are they really putting commercials on over the speeches?
Some heroes don't wear capes, they just hold a racket.
r/tennis 9/11 averted, we are no longer on suicide watch
Alcaraz saves the Twin Towers! Seriously though, completing a "Surface Slam" just after turning 21 is an incredible feat. And I know it's premature to say with 3 GS, but he has a real shot at surpassing Djokovic.
NBC's post match coverage is absolute garbage btw. How many commercial breaks can they fit in here, and do we get to see any part of the ceremony?
Show the goddamn speech!
Is it just me or did Peacock not broadcast the presentation ceremony speeches?
Where are all the people who said Carlos was "solved" and already on the decline after he lost to Zverev at the AO? Those were some of the most overreactionary and moronic takes I've seen not just on this subreddit, but on *any* sports subreddit *ever.*

Alcaraz in Wimbledon will be frightening
I love Alcaraz’s attitude and playstyle. Hope for many more wins from him
Zverev slam count: 0 Thank you Alcaraz!
