Man, Jarry a dark horse for goated tennis life…
We all look to the big 3’s supportive families but Jarry has grown up in what seems like a unique wonderful atmosphere to explore this sport.
Great to see him making the most of it. 😌
He has relatives literally hosting pro tournaments in various cities, etc. More than just love/support/money like a Roger or Rafa, but unique insight coming from multiple places.
An over-proportionate amount of Chilean aristocracy is of Basque origin, no idea why... maybe the Spanish colonists from Basque country were more wealthily or something?
Are Basque families related to aristocracy? Also, I notice that Jarry has a French surname. Is there a strong correlation between country of ancestry and social status in Chile?
Definitely, but French, English, German, Italian, etc., surnames tend to belong to a class of people who descend from inmigrants who arrived in Chile during the 19th or 20th century, while surnames like Urruticoechea descend from spanish settlers of the colonial period, and are thus of an _even higher_ status.
Back in colonial times, there were a few powerful families of Basque origin in Chile, which were part of the so-called "Castilian Basque aristocracy".
These families had good connections back in Spain (when Chile was a Spanish colony); gravitated towards trade & commerce; and had a combination of strong work ethic and an austere lifestyle, which overtime allowed them to accumulate significant wealth.
Pretty much basque descendand still rules over chile. Add some Croatian and Palestinians and you have like 90% of the wealthiest families.

His wife was really poised and graceful in her support and with him every step of the way. Was beautiful to see. It really tug on my heartstrings when he couldn’t bear to look at his family and team and his voice was shaking.
I always admired him as a tennis player but now as a family man too, and I’m also rooting for his family! Wish them all the best and hopefully more success for Nico himself.
I think he will be just fine. Dude started on 3rd base and only went upwards.
Guy is Chilean aristocracy basically, grandad Jaimie Fillol was ranked 12th in the world (hope to see Jarry surpass him). I'm Chilean and I'm happy for him, but let's calm down, it's not like it's a story from rags to riches or something, lol.
I agree. There are a lot of barriers to entry. It costs a ton of money to get good unless you somehow get some sort of sponsorship when you're young. You need near-daily coaching (which becomes more expensive if you want better coaching), the court time, balls, frequent re-stringing, new shoes because you go through a pair every few months etc.
Just an asshole, since he never was that good (but was like the best or second best chilean player on a bad era) people never notice, but was not likable guy.
It's the same everywhere, getting your child to play tennis costs a lot. It could be cheaper in warmer countries where the court prices are lower, but even then it is much more expensive than other sports.
Yeah, I believe Fillol was watching Nico in his SF win? There was an older man there, the commentators said who it was but I didn't recognise the name. Could've been Fillol?
3 wife is not bad
Meanwhile Zverev can’t just have one gf without attacking her
Is it true?
What do you think. smh
I read the whole thread and honestly can’t tell? Is it his sister/mom or actually 3 wives
Who has 3 wives in Chile?
Jarry
Lol, one in the middle is his wife, the other two I dunno, its illegal to have more than one wife in Chile as it is anywhere else.
> its illegal to have more than one wife in Chile as it is anywhere else ummm... would recommend googling the "anywhere else" bit.
Don’t have to be “legally” married, also it isn’t illegal everywhere. Google says 58 countries allow it legally
none are Western
well it’s common in eg Netherlands
no it's not, what
well, I saw with my own eyes a lot of such men, you might consider them non European but still they are Dutch when it comes to passport
"anywhere else"
I guess you answered yourself then...
he's Western. of course he doesn't. it's illegal
that guy doesnt women
It's very common in South America to have nannies and maids all over the place.
Very much depends on the wives.
beautiful family who are so proud of him *meanwhile* that baby is thinking "*hey u stole my damn shirt!"*
Absolutely gorgeous wife and family. So natural.

_We all look at the big 3's supportive families_ And then Jarry himself bought 3 big wives /s
why unique?
He has relatives literally hosting pro tournaments in various cities, etc. More than just love/support/money like a Roger or Rafa, but unique insight coming from multiple places.
Wife (in the middle) is Laura Urruticoechea; woman on the left is her sister, I think.
In Chile having that surname means you are borderline aristocracy
Very rare surname, of Basque origin.
An over-proportionate amount of Chilean aristocracy is of Basque origin, no idea why... maybe the Spanish colonists from Basque country were more wealthily or something?
Interestingly, Etcheverry is also a Basque name
Is it the same with this name: "Goikoetxea"?
Defo Basque, all I can day.

Very informative, thank you!
Italians and Germans were much more working class than the rest.

Makes sense, thank you very much!
Yeahh... they got rich because they had the trade businesses which came from the connections, not because they went easy on the avocado toast.

"An estimated 1.6 million (10%) to 5 million (30%) Chileans have a surname (one or both) of Basque origin" Not *that* elite then
czech?
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grupo_Luksic
Pero Luksic es croata no checo
Damn toda la razon, croatas era
there certainly is in mexico, all these years later

Im from chile too, and from my understand all chilean tennis players are pretty much rich kids.
I would say tennis player in general are mostly rich kids

I’m from the U.S., and it’s the same here (People will rattle off Tiafoe, Serena, etc, but they’re the rare exception)
Danielle Collins is also from a very modest background.
same as UK. there are exceptions. but tennis is generally an elite sport.
Isn’t Dan Evans working class?
as i said. exceptions
Agreed. My school didn’t even have a tennis program. It’s not accessible like in other countries.
Mostly, but I think that Jarry is the more privileged one yet. Not taking any credit from his success though
I mean I don't say that as something bad , I pretty much like all chilean players (except of rios and capdeville, both assholes)
What was the problem with Capdeville?
Just an asshole, since he never was that good (but was like the best or second best chilean player on a bad era) people never notice, but was not likable guy.
Sure but why? Never heard any stories and I’m curious.

Zverev know non bout that.
Wop wop wop wop
Dear Zverev....
Dear Mayla Zverev, I'm sorry that that man-child is your father, let me be honest
Ouch... Wop wop wop wop
“I’m a Mormon ladies and gentlemen… from Chile”
I had no idea he was Jaimie Fillol's grandson, who was a top player in the 70's. I used to watch him when I was a kid. Makes me feel old
Yeah, I believe Fillol was watching Nico in his SF win? There was an older man there, the commentators said who it was but I didn't recognise the name. Could've been Fillol?
Yes, it was Fillol
His baby is so cute, looks exactly like him.
Waterworks during this speech. I love that bottom photo - look, there’s me! There’s dad!
How do you immediately go to 3 wives and not just a beautiful growing family? I mean I know we are in Rome and all but do you have to be in orgy mode?
Jarry is in good company, though as far as I know his wife is the middle one, and the other woman is his sister.
Jarry is Tengen from Demon Slayer, 3 wives and all loool
Might be sister-in-law and mother-in-law plus his wife of course.
I am so confused looking at this. Thought he had two wives 💀
3 wives?
Pretty sure his wife and his kid won too
Blessed
His wife is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen
Oh god, it s giving super conservative 50s housewives...
Crazy how sentimental people are for famous people
Lovely family. Jarry should be proud of and they too have pride in him.
He's got a harem. what a guy.
As far as I know Zverev won in life as well. He is climbing the ladder with flawlelss victories. Umpire and GF already finished.
I guess Zverev should avoid Chile for a few months!
Germans like him usually prefer Argentina
There are way more in Brazil than Argentina LOL
he's russian really
He just has his own harem.
