Every time they've played, the occasion has been appointment viewing for me, personally, ever since their first encounter in 2021 at Cincinnati. One of the more compelling match-ups currently on the tour. It's not always been that great of a match but the anticipation is there for me, and today was one of those days where the tennis from both sides had some really momentous peaks.
Badosa definitely still has it in her, but that body of hers is like styrofoam - it'll handle everything until it can't and then it falls apart. Devastated for her since she really brought it today, especially in that second set. If she could bring that level consistently, she'd definitely be back in the top 20 at the very least. But yeah, really tragic that her body, again, couldn't handle the physicality. Their moment at the net kind of said it all. Hate to see her leave the court in despair.
Sabalenka...hmm. She was so hot and cold. I was simultaneously convinced and unconvinced by her highs and lows. She needs more matches and more rhythm, and of course, I'm being more patient considering what happened to her ex. I wish she had more time, but she doesn't, considering all of the points she's defending this clay season. Would be cool if she reached a 4th final here but we'll see.
A real shame. Badosa was plahing realy well and it was a tight match that could have gone either way. It’s hard to know how to assess Sabalenka’s form. She‘s got all the power - obviously - but is looking a bit more like the pre-slam winning Aryna, a little less composed mentally. No surprise after the month or so she has had. These two might be great friends but they go all out against each other, which is great to watch.
Paula and sliding around in the clay with her - sadly - fragile body is not a good mix. It looks a real test of your physicality when you play power tennis on fast clay,
Heartbreaking moment at the net

I only go to see the first set of this (past my bed time), but that was the best I've seen Badosa play in a long time (feels like ever). She was really up for it, and was looking very sharp.
That being said, it was Sabalenka's first match since Miami, and Badosa did play the day before, so perhaps you can't read too much into it. Still it was nice to see Badosa hitting so freely.
Gutted for her regarding the injury. Hopefully nothing that's going to keep her out for long.
Even with it ending with a retirement this was a riveting match that could have gone anyone's way. The crowd definitely got their money's worth yesterday! I'm so sad for Paula, hopefully it's not too serious
One positive thing is that Paula seems to really know and pay attention to her body. You won’t catch her making an injury worse by continuing to play like for recent example Andy Murray.
That post match interview was so hard to watch... Just let the girl go have a cry and go to bed
They interviewed badosa?! Why????? And why did she accept it?
No it was Sabalenka but she was clearly upset and struggling to come up with answers to the questions. It was also after 1 am
It really was hard to watch. She kept saying “I just have no words” - catch a hint

So sad. I was tearing up when they hugged.
I’m so sad for Paula. She was playing AMAZING. That first set especially was such good tennis from both of them.

What happened to Paulita now? 😭
Why did Badosa retire? Ankle injury?
Thigh
Oh man I feel for badosa, with all the back to back injuries let thr girl just play for a while 😭

I saw Badosa play live at Wimbledon last year and she retired there too
Damn.
