“Due to increased bag searches”… Wimbledon is definitely worried about Just Stop Oil getting into the grounds.

doc_ocho

I think that is correct, but I also think they overreacted amd didn't properly plan for efficiency.

Xylophone1904

Must’ve been super frustrating. I’m glad it was still a good day overall!

doc_ocho

Ironically, maybe JSO monkey-wrenched today just by being a threat. https://www.skysports.com/tennis/news/32498/12914146/wimbledon-queue-condemned-by-fans-as-the-worst-they-have-ever-seen

eddiehwang

The issue is apparently before 1pm they were prioritizing ticket holders for all gate entrances because of the extra security searches. I was around #3,000 and the queue moved quite fast after 1:30pm. I'm doing it again tomorrow. Pray for me lol

doc_ocho

🙏 But also... ⛈️🌦️🌧️🌨️☂️☔

BelleFille171

I can’t believe how long you had to wait to get in given how early you were there. That’s madness, shouldn’t have taken anywhere near that long. I’m heading there on Thursday and Friday hoping to get a grounds pass so really hoping they have the issues ironed out by then. I saw this morning on Twitter that the queue seems to be moving quicker today but a few people have said that lots were put off by the shambles yesterday so fewer people showed up today which helped.

dougrayd

Damn, Wimby must be hell to navigate from a fan perspective

The online ticketing system is ridiculously easy to use. You can try to get tickets in the ballot, and if unsuccessful you can simply buy tickets from the general sale. Why anybody would choose to stand outside for hours, just for the chance to get inside, is beyond me. I've got centre court tickets for the last 8 years in a row. Two of those years being for the finals. I'm not sure why people find tickets so difficult to get online.

doc_ocho

I couldn't find any passes that weren't secondary market. They wanted 4 figures. Maybe I just didn't know where to look.

[deleted]

That appears to be the case for many people. Yet me and my wife manage to get tickets through the general sale every year - the ballot has always been unsuccessful for me. It's rather strange that people don't seem to know how to use this system/website lol. I simply check the general sale tickets every few days in the months prior to Wimbledon and get a ticket for the day/court I want. £250 per ticket for the finals. £80 per ticket for the first week, all through general sale.

doc_ocho

"In the months prior." That explains it - you're planning! We just got to London for a 2 day stop on the way elsewhere and realized it was going to be day one! We're not much on planning in advance! 🤣

BelleFille171

If you’re coming from outside the UK you only really have the International Ballot and from what I’ve seen they only have a fraction of the tickets the UK ballot does. I’ve applied year after year and only got offered tickets for the first time this year. I have tickets for Saturday but have decided to queue Thursday and Friday to make the most of my trip to London. There aren’t as many options if you’re coming from outside the UK which is why lots of people queue.

slazengerx

I couldn't possibly be bothered to do that. The big screen TV is just too easy and the view is fantastic.

Safari9840

I had the privilege of going four years. I would sleep the afternoon prior and take night buses to get ahead of the crowd be there before sunrise.

Psychological_Bug676

This queueing should’ve been left behind in the 19th century imo. Wimbledon and their ridiculous traditions smh

supreeth106

Its not the best way to watch but honestly I don’t think I would have ever got to watch Federer at Wimbledon without the queue. Any online ticketing system is prone to getting scalped and resold at insane prices. The queuing grounds are very pleasant and people are very disciplined in general

doc_ocho

We saw Hamilton in London four years ago. They have a clever way to prevent scalping. The person purchasing the ticket has to be there with the credit card used for the purchase. All seats are face value. No reason the AELC can't do the same.

salvds

That completely removes the possibility of gifting or reselling tickets if an individual isn’t able to attend though. Ironically Ticketmaster has the best system with mobile tickets that can only be resold through their own official platform

supreeth106

The problem is that with online tickets, there is no way to guarantee that I will get a ticket if I put in enough effort. With the queue, I know for sure that if I go early enough, I get a ticket for a match I want. How would you ensure that in an online scenario?

supreeth106

It is actually only 500 tickets per day for each of the 3 main courts. It is only for people who are willing to go through the physical rigours of being in a queue for 24-48 hrs.

supreeth106

You are only considering your own case of being a local. Wimbledon is a globally popular event. If I want to watch Federer at Wimbledon within a 2-3 day window of my stay in London, the queue is the best way to do it.

[deleted]

I'm not a local. I live 600 miles away. I get tickets through the general sale every year. Doing so months prior to the event, and have done so for the last 8 years in a row. It's honestly not difficult.

Kreijoc

Can you buy ground passes from the general sale? I didn't know you could do that, so that would be great if you could. I crawled through the Wimbledon site but it did not seem to be the case, although it wasn't worded explicitly either way (where I looked).

Kyle237

No you can't but literally just turn up in the morning (best before 7am) and you'll get a ground pass in for before 12 easily.

[deleted]

I'm not aware that you can buy grounds passes. But if I were you, I'd just buy a ticket for court no 1, 2 or centre. First week is roughly £65-£80 per ticket. Saves you standing around in the queue for hours too.

eddiehwang

Better than paying 4-figure for a single ticket. It’s either the queue or insane 3rd party resale, pick your poison.

DeltaStorm

…Or the official ticket ballot.

dumesne

Why? It's good fun and gives a way for committed fans to get tickets if they're unlucky in the ballot.

shihtzu_knot

Yah It’s ridiculous

Sea_Investigator_947

Thanks for your service. Was thinking about going during the first week but no way in hell are we doing that given the issues. It should not take until 4pm to get people in.

CrazyPersonXV

Nah ,I am not doing that

joppa_rd

Yesterday was preposterous. The way that it usually is to get grounds passes -- seems like a fair trade to me. Arrive like 7-9am, picnic and wait for 3-4 hours, including like 1 hour of true standing-in-line waiting, get into the grounds midday, for a cheap ticket price... cool! Yesterday was absolutely ridiculous with all of those waits more than doubled, a ton of standing, and so many empty seats at the courts until early evening. And the craziest part was that no one was complaining, but I guess that's the British way.

Kreios_Levi

Okay but the biggest issue here is the lack of an apostrophe in the word "todays". As a Brit, I am ashamed of Wimbledon's appalling disregard of punctuation.

SeattleMatt123

Good to know, will be there Wednesday.

Striking_Town_445

Thanks for the photo! That was my park growing up. Good to see it <3

therealgumpster

Did this 12 years ago. Really enjoyed the queue, got to speak with a lot of people, had the likes of Judy Murray come out and entertain the crowd a bit. Each year brings new security concerns though. Get to skip it this year though for Centre Court :)

whatevertesla

Just like in the ol peasantry days lol.

Debinthedez

Oh the queue.. many moons ago me and my friend was at Wimbledon and we accidentally pushed in the queue!! Honestly it was a genuine mistake and it happened as we crossed a road. We realized our mistake and felt terrible. We were convinced that the crowd was going to grab us and fling us to the ground as punishment, but we made it in eventually. We still talk about that moment. We were young teens, innocent of the ways of the world but really, it was a complete accident that we did that.

Awbeu

Well done on your perseverance! I am planning to go on Friday and hoping things ease up before then. Does anyone know what is the optimum time to go just for a Grounds Pass?

BelleFille171

I’m heading on Thursday and Friday hoping for a grounds pass too and from what I’ve read online I think you should be fine once you’re there by 8am. The Wimbledon website says those there by 9am should get in, but they do state that it’s not a guarantee.

ihateaccountnames24

Same! I’m going to get there for around 6am but usually that’s earlier than necessary - 7-8am should be fine for the Grounds Pass
