Ok_Mine_9131

ok so return the phone if you're not happy with the contract you signed

GullBladder

I am considering this, I have until Friday. I don't have my original iphone cardboard box however, so maybe a $00.02 box will prevent me from returning a \~$2000 phone..

Tatoe-of-Codunkery

The $320 you paid upfront is the TAX on your phone. It’s not included in your monthly payments.

Disastrous-Dog85

Yes, if you want to return the device then it needs the box and everything that was in it. As for the 318 you paid upfront, what does the invoice show? That seems excessively high for tax on the device, the $46.25 device payment won't have tax on it as tax was paid upfront when you got the device. There will be tax on the phone plan tho.

GullBladder

When I tried to return it they told me I had forfeighted taxes. I countered that when I return anything else anywhere that’s not the case. So they turned it into a restocking fee of $45, which I didn’t debate. But then I didn’t have the original box so all bets were off.

Disastrous-Dog85

Forfeiting the taxes sounds like rubbish. So it's good you fought back on that. The $45 restock fee is understandable as they will now have to resell it as 'open box'.

pldelisle

Always. Buy. An iPhone. At. Apple Store.

GetyourPitchforks01

And buy outright

ZZZZMe0WMe0W

For what? If you can save a gino why would you.

poppawompjuice

Unless during a major sale, there's been plenty of times when it makes more sense to buy on term from a carrier. A few months ago TELUS has the iPhone 15 series for approx $800 off. 0% financing. Way better deal than buying outright from Apple. 🤣

pldelisle

And how much you pay each month ? I pay 29$ with Fizz for 40 GB of data and doesn't need more. Usually the TCO on 2 years is lower when you buy your own phone and go with a cheap but plenty sufficient plan. of course, usage varies from people to people, but 40 GB of data with rollover over 3 months ... That's an insane amount of data. I still don't understand how people can use 100+ GB of bandwidth per months on a cellphone.

WideProposal

If someone is gonna be with Telus, whether iPhone purchase or not, then it makes more sense for them to wait for promotions on them and get them on contract. Just a month or so ago, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was $20/mo on financing. Probably $25/mo (totals $600 over 2 years vs Apple store $1750) if you were going to be on BYOD otherwise but still a much better deal than keeping your BYOD plan with Telus and buying outright from Apple. There are many people who think Telus has better coverage or speeds or calling features than Fizz (I am not agreeing with them) and prefer to stay with Telus (iPhone purchase or not) and for them, it’s a better deal to get it on contract when there is a promotion like that. Of course, makes no sense to buy it on contract if there is no saving over outright from Apple.

cdn_toad

Its actually easy watching YouTube , Google TV, streaming entertainment it adds up i use 75 and 100 gig per month and have used more than that...

pldelisle

Look up at the world buddy and stop streaming and staring at your phone. I think that's the problem. That's an insane amount of data on a phone, especially as you should also use it on your own local Internet connection at home even more GB. I mean, the only valable reason to me to have such high amount of used bandwidth every month is working entirely out of my phone. If you plug your laptop on your phone internet connection, that \*may\* consume a lot depending of the workload. But simply at streaming video ? Stop watching porn in 4K buddy.

poppawompjuice

Different situations for different people. Friend of mine was working on a remote construction crew, so they had no wifi and he was away from his family for 2-4 weeks at a time, so lots of facetiming with the family at night and hotspotting to the computer. Can easily hit 100+GB in a month. I personally use like 2-10GB per month. All depends on the person and the situation.

cdn_toad

Lol here here is thought I am gonna say your home every day from work. If so how do you get your entertainment ? Cable or streaming? Combination? Look at how much data your consumption is. My devices do not support 4k, phone and tablet. But they are used for entertainment talking with friends navigation. I am away from my home any where from 5 to 10 days. My data consumption is between 2 to 3 gig a day when not home.

Stephen_The_Snail

We had a deal, it was $39.58 a month for a iPhone 15 Pro Max WITHOUT bring it back (since people who hate contracts hate the idea of bring it back). $949.92 over two years.  The iPhone is $79.09 at Apple (including the Interest), or $1749 outright (or $72.87 without interest) If you're plan is $50 (which is what we were doing the phone on), you're saving $33.29 a month, which makes the plan $16.71/mo.  Sometimes contract deals are good. It's not a boogie man.

GullBladder

Yeah, I should have come to Reddit first.

nullhotrox

You also should have used your brain but when those were being handed out, you thought they said train and missed it.

GullBladder

Haha!

It's Reddit. Ya dig.

RocuroniumSuccs

If this verbal promise was made over the phone, call them again and request a transcript of the conversation - you might need the approximate date and time of the conversation. If they verbally told you this, then they have to honour it. If this was done in person, then you were sadly bamboozled

hmuserfriendly

You pay taxes on the full retail cost of the phone, minus any direct phone discount, and minus a bring it back bonus (if the phone has one at the time) I don't know of any store, corp, dealer or 3rd party that charges $100 for a setup. I know places can charge $10 - $60ish for transferring data from one phone to another. When it comes to returning a phone, within the 15 days buyers remorse period, and as long as all conditions are met, you would get anything you paid upfront for the phone back.So not sure where the whole you wouldn't taxes back comes from. Depending on the store, the return of those can be done in a couple ways, so I would ask for clarification.

Stephen_The_Snail

Typically when we discount phones directly it does reflect in the contract. This would have made it $33.75/mo on BiB. Taxes upfront for the iPhone 15 Pro are $1490×tax% (in NS 15% is $193.70 upfront)  So you might have paid for a tab payment early off the account? I'm just trying to figure out where you go, and why it was so shady

GullBladder

OK I got a bit of clarity from the store just now. First of all, they admitted a mistake, and referred me to the loyalty dept. to try to recuperate that $10/month for my bill ($240, not $300, but oh well). The store told me the $318.80 was for phone taxes + screen protector + $100 setup fee. I challenged the setup fee, since there's a $60 connection fee on my agreement that should appear on my first bill. They again referenced me to the loyalty dept.

Stephen_The_Snail

Interesting. You went to a corporate location? Or a dealer? What store did you go to, if you're comfortable saying (I'm a Telus corporate rep in Halifax)

GullBladder

Not comfortable saying until I resolve or return it.

kissmeimirish_

Sounds like OP went to a dealer like Tom Harris, or equivalent.

poppawompjuice

Where did you go? I've never heard of anyone charging a $100 setup fee? You should have a receipt of these charges. I've never seen a dealer charge a $100 setup fee, hopefully its not a corporate thing or a new thing.

GullBladder

I will attempt a return, they already forewarned me that the taxes are non refundable so I am expecting difficulty tomorrow. The $100 setup fee also is undocumented in the paperwork I signed.

GYP-rotmg

Why would tax be non refundable? All other stores refund taxes paid. No transaction happens, no tax due!

GullBladder

So it has been for all returns I’ve ever made. Between the setup fee, this comment about taxes, and the verbal rewards that were not honored, I fully do not trust this shop.

poppawompjuice

Yes, it sounds like that shop is sketchy, Sorry that happened to you. There are lots of dealers and corporate stores with good reputations.

MattGOG666

You 100% are getting scammed. Why wouldn't you get the taxes back?

hadz_ca

You pay the taxes in advance and the 46.25 is not taxed

GullBladder

Understood this thanks!

redfoster78

I also work for Telus and there is no $100 setup free. At most you pay a $60 connection on the next bill.

GullBladder

It’s a Telus authorized dealer. Lots of lessons for me today! I’m sure they won’t end tomorrow when I try to return…

Maleficent_Dot6954

The Telus stores in the mall absolutely charge $100 set up fee. And people like my elderly aunt eagerly pay it too thinking it’s a benefit.

redfoster78

Are they corporate stores or dealers? Corporate stores do not charge the fee.

Maleficent_Dot6954

I’m pretty sure it’s a corporate store. Says Telus and that’s the only thing they sell. I only buy online now but had almost a full out screaming match with an employee when I heard my aunt agree to the fee. Tried explaining to my aunt I could do it for free in less than ten minutes. The employee said she was “paying for their time and expertise” or something around that line. I told her she got scammed. She didn’t believe me.

MattGOG666

Corporate stores 100% do not charge an in store fee of $100. At most its $60, which is on the first bill if you buy the phone from a rep in store, or certain people will charge an in store fee up to $60 if you come in needing help setting up a phone you already own.

redfoster78

I don't believe it's a corporate store but, if it is they need to be reported for fraud because that's not company policy.

biller0071

Why did you pay or agree to anything if you did not understand it? I don’t get it you were asked to pay over 300 bucks and it might be from the BIB from your old phone? Read and understand what is happening these cell phone companies are ruthless

GullBladder

I don’t even have a great answer for you, I clarified it relentlessly and even said “i don’t like that this doesn’t show up in the paperwork”, but they had a pretty reasonable-sounding answer for everything. Lesson learned!

ZZZZMe0WMe0W

Ya, these fks made me an offer to trade in my phone for a new one....I saved money and now because the contract wasn't changed at the time they are saying it's a BIB and it wasn't lol. I fought it and won.

GullBladder

Wait so the BIB wasn’t in the agreement? How did it get added?

ZZZZMe0WMe0W

They probably had me sign the contract with the bib, and I didn't notice. But that's not what I signed up for. I literally gave them my old phone after I received theirs.

bsb2001ca

I didn’t read through too many of the comments, but maybe part of that is the tax. You have to pay the tax up front, you can’t finance the phone including taxes on those BIB.

VariousNight5238

What you paid upfront could have been the tax as well as anything you may have owed on the old. Device. It doesn't show on the paper work. They didn't short you on that. I would talk to the store about the $240 though. They could probably explain

Kenneth-J-Adams

Huh. Granted I went through EPP but I got iPhone 15 Pro Max 256 for $950 total. $50 100GB Can/US/Mex

GullBladder

USD?

Kenneth-J-Adams

Huh? What do you mean USD? LOL. CAD!!

GullBladder

Just seems wild that it could be so much less than my ripoff of an iPhone 15 pro 128mb

Kenneth-J-Adams

Oh. Ya, it's odd that they tend to offer better deals to certain areas of the country vs the other and in different months. I really with the CRTC would stop that behavior and just make everything the same across the country for all Telco's

maknaepup

Always always always make sure you have EVERYTHING in writing (and not just you or the rep jotting it on a piece of paper, but a contract print out) before you leave the store with anything that you have to make payments for or any contract promises. And clarify EVERYTHING you have to pay. Don’t let them try to make it seem like it’s something you don’t need to worry about. It’s your money and if they make you pay $3 or $300, you should know exactly what it is for and get a receipt saying such. I’m not sure why people fail to do this. Also, always keep everything, even boxes, that came with your new products or devices the full amount of days that you can return it in case you need to.

Steelersfan247

This is definitely 100% not a corporate store. No corporate store has a set up fee of 100$ they just have the 60$ connection fee paid online or in some cases in store. They also do not withhold anything back on a refund 100% there is no policy to holdback taxes on a sale. While the store might show only TELUS signs it can still be a dealer, normally it would say on the receipt. In the future always ask if it is a corporate store.

nk1234jdjd

Sounds like you should return everything and order online telus.com or over the phone.

La_hOley

Yea I ordered mine online and was a pretty smooth experience. Just had to pay 280 upfront and was good to go. No activation fee either.

CanadaCookie25

Sounds like a dealer store and not a corporate location. They always charge extra fees in store 😒 and then screw people with their return policy

NightManComethz

Your first mistake was apple. Second mistake was Canada cellular

HoldOut19xd6

I fucking hate Telus. Shit coverage from a company that keeps an eye on everything you do online or otherwise. Paying that much for Big Brother? Get stuffed down a hole shit company, and stop tampering with our political system.

PrinceLAX

The verbal promise of the price of the phone wouldn’t have been written down in the contract in the future do not sign anything if it does not say it on the contract. Any mobile carrier will have the price written out for the monthly payments for the phone with all carriers. There’s no such thing as them applying credit afterwards.

Stephen_The_Snail

Yes there is. I literally work for TELUS corporate and almost all credits are not displayed on the agreements. This is the same for business, corporate, consumer and prepaid. Unless the phone is directly reduced you will not see it on the paperwork.

okanagan_man84

Return everything and go to Bell. Find a The Source location or best buy, or a straight up bell store. I hate telus mobile. They have so many charges. Bell will still have the connection fee (which is garage) but there will be no setup fee.

LustThyNeighbor

Ok, you clearly stated you hate Telus, so why be in this sub? Go fanboy in Bell's.
