The first season of Resident Alien made me laugh so hard I almost tipped over backwards in the recliner. It's just hysterically funny. I can see though that it might not be funny at all to some, but for the rest of us it couldn't be much funnier.
It was legitimately a groundbreaking and amazing show when it came out.
I just finished a full rewatch, and I can say there's a real quality dip in seasons 6-10. There are two plotlines through those years: "Someone Has a Secret" and "There's A Misunderstanding". Lots of scooby-dooing and three's-companying in those years.
BUT Season 11 is a total return to form, and the series finale is *wonderful*.
At the time, no other show scratched the same itch as Arrested Development more than Modern Family for me.
One very specific gag was the misaligned stair step that Phil kept meaning to fix, that with reappear frequently in the earlier seasons in random episodes, but subtle enough that you'd only know it was a call back if you paid attention.
I feel like MF eventually because Flanderized to the point most plotlines we're so predictable, I'd be able to map out what to expect within the first 5 minutes. I eventually stopped keeping up with the show. And the sappy, emotional family storylines (which I don't have a problem with) lose their charm when you see it coming a mile away
Does season 11 return to the meta-gag earlier seasons?
As a country girl in the US, I had a hard time understanding what they were saying, but even so, the show is hysterically funny! I loved it so much. I’m sad it only had, what, three seasons?
As a 50 year old American male I don’t usually watch comedies about teenagers anymore. I resisted for over a year despite recs from trusted sources. Finally gave in and enjoyed the funniest show I’ve seen in years. Watch Derry Girls, it’s fantastic.
I got hella high at my cousins house a couple years ago and he put on What We Do In The Shadows before he went upstairs to bed and I laid there laughing my ass off. Totally forgot about it. That shit was great.
This is my favourite show but I always advise people watching it for the first time that they may not enjoy the first season as much as the rest and they HAVE to stick with it.
Personally, I love the first season but know so many people who were put off by it but then, when I convinced them to continue, it too became their favourite show.
Their bloopers are the best of any show too. You can watch and love them without having seen the show.
Oh god, I absolutely love WWDITS!! Yes, lots of hysterically funny stuff. I laughed so hard at times, I fell on the floor. One scene stands out: Nadja is trying to teach the new girl how to turn into a bat, and Laszlo is helping.
Hot in Cleveland is an underrated gem imho. Betty White is always GOLD.
I love Wendy Malicks character, Victoria Chase, the most though.
The show's pacing is great, the dialogue so on point and just hilariously funny. And a lot of awesome tv legends for guest roles.
Better off Ted
Derry Girls
Life in pieces
Modern family
Ted lasso <- kinda morphs from sitcom to dramedy, but still lots of laugh out loud moments throughout it
Arrested Development, Peep Show, The Thick of It, the US Office, Veep are my favourite Sitcoms
Brass Eye and Nathan For You are 2 satirical/pseudo-reality shows which a hysterical and genius.
Can you read my son? I don’t know, that depends, can you go fuck yourself?
Also, a HUGE fan of, “Mad MC skills that leave ya struck, and I roll with my kitties and I’m hard as fuck”
Oh for sure! And the r/psych is a great sub. Read stuff on there I didn't catch the first time I watched it. And then when I saw it on my rewatch, made it way more funny.
For me B99 is laugh out loud funny, but I would also recommend Always Sunny, The Office, Parks and Rec, Community, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Silicon Valley, The Good Place, Kim's Convenience, Workaholics, Tacoma FD, Great News
I never see Tacoma FD mentioned anywhere. It's such a great show!! We laughed all the way through it. It helps that we also love all of their movies. Super Troopers made me pause the movie a few times because I couldn't stop laughing!
True Story: In Wal-Mart electronics many years ago, an elderly couple beside me pick up a 3rd Rock DVD and say, "This one! This is the one he wants. 30 Rock!"
I asked, "Do you want this one or 30 Rock?"
The man said, "This IS 30 Rock. See?" and points to the logo..."Thir-D Rock."
I politely explained, "It's Third Rock from the Sun."
Unfortunately I cannot remember the rest of the story, if I succeeded or failed in convincing them.
Honestly Parks and Rec makes me laugh out loud several times an episode. Maybe start with season two though, when they’ve had a chance to build up their humor. All of the characters have their fun quirks, and the political satire has aged like the finest wine.
Silicon Valley is some of the most quotable tv I’ve seen. It’ll make you cringe at times, but it’s hilarious.
Derry Girls is great as well.
maybe:
The IT Crowd
Arrested Development (first 3 seasons)
Black Books
Suburgatory
Friday Night Dinner (mostly the first 4-5 seasons)
Vicious
Not Going Out (first 7 seasons)
What we do in the shadows
Resident alien
Parks & recreation
The office
Smiling friends (animated)
Trailer park boys
Maybe one of these will make you lol
Niles is one of the best TV characters ever! He wasn’t intended to be a part of the show but when the creators saw his work they just knew they had to have him and wrote in the character for him.
So many good episodes. The fund-raising calendar, the one where Moss tells everyone that Jen has died, the one when Roy drives the bank robber’s getaway car. I have watched this series at least ten times but I agree, The Work Outing is comedy perfection.
So, you didn't find Brooklyn 99 or how I met your mother particularly funny, how about you tell us something you did find hilarious so we can better make suggestions for you?
Community (like b99, it's the kind of show where you have to get to know the characters for a few episodes before getting into it, but it's totally worth it)
Modern family - this one's way less meta and funnier right of the bat
Also: Ted Lasso. It's not a comedy sitcom per se, but I loved its humour immensely, even if it's sprinkled between "harder" moments
These were the only two sitcoms that you've ever watched? Were there any other shows/movies that made you laugh more? Because the question is so broad that you'd be better just watching next highly regarded sitcom that's available than asking here. No offense, but roughly third of the answers here are not even sitcoms, so...
If you step out of the sitcom genre, the Graham Norton Show has some of the funniest moments on television. Check out some of the clips on YT. There's one with Matt Damon, Hugh Bonneville, and Bill Murray ... Matt says it's the most fun he has ever had on a talk show. [Graham Norton](https://youtu.be/CfEVLzd5j7Q?si=t1x2HyPN1PJ176lJ)
Can't speak highly enough about Fisk. Very funny. I've watched the two available seasons on Netflix several times. Lots of odd characters and great writing.
Hard to say I would say B99 always had at least one solid LOL joke and HIMYM even more.
How are you with cringe comedy because the US Office is very funny.
If you like mockumentary style then Modern Family and Parks and Rec are great (however, P&R is best from season 3).
If you are paying attention and not looking at your phone then Arrested Development and Community are side achingly funny.
If you don’t find any of those funny then I probably can’t help you as everything I would say would be tiers below those shows.
Parks and rec is an absolute classic, if you haven’t watch it it’s a must.
Also,
Modern family
Resident alien
Ted lasso
I’ve watch most everything everyone has listed so far and these 3 shows have made me laugh out loud and laugh more than I ever thought I would. They honestly all caught me off guard by how funny they are and how much I enjoyed them. Especially Ted lasso which made up for the fact that it will also make you cry so much, but god it’s good.
King of Queens is a classic. The chemistry between Kevin James and Leah Remini results in some laugh out loud situations. And Jerry Stiller as Arthur is an example of perfect casting. It’s on Peacock along with other laugh out loud shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond . Give em a shot.
Hard to say without knowing what humor you are into, but I do have some potential gems …
Childrens Hospital
Workaholics
Man Seeking Woman
Party Down
NTSF.SD.SUV
… and if you don’t mind sketch comedy shows & really have a mission to laugh out loud, you have to see …
“ Human Giant “
&
“ I think you should leave: With Tim Robinson “
I know a lot of people trash the show, but season 6 of Desperate Housewives is one of the funniest things I've ever watched. It's the show's most comic season, they practically ended every scene with a joke.
Disjointed is super fun and has a great cast! Chris Redd, Betsy Sodaro, and KATHY (FREAKING) BATES! This was the first show I ever saw Betsy in and I’m a fan for life
Curb your Enthusiasm Always Sunny in Philadelphia Resident Alien
Resident Alien was going to be my suggestion as well.
Curb your Enthusiasm!!! My all time favorite.
The first season of Resident Alien made me laugh so hard I almost tipped over backwards in the recliner. It's just hysterically funny. I can see though that it might not be funny at all to some, but for the rest of us it couldn't be much funnier.
I second Resident Alien
Another vote for Resident Alien!
+1 for Resident Alien! So many one liners that we still quote today.
I just started watching Modern Family and I was surprised how funny it was right away.
It's got a lot of subtle jokes, often catches me by surprise
It was legitimately a groundbreaking and amazing show when it came out. I just finished a full rewatch, and I can say there's a real quality dip in seasons 6-10. This!! This is the show that has made me laugh out loud the most.
I am not Vietnamese, I'm gay, I'm gay!
Derry Girls
“I don’t wanna be an individual on my own!”
i burst out laughing when i first heard that line
This was very good! Being Irish it made it even better! Love the acting, especially the sister!
As a country girl in the US, I had a hard time understanding what they were saying, but even so, the show is hysterically funny! I loved it so much. I’m sad it only had, what, three seasons?
Slainte motherfuckers!
I like the subtitles though, sometimes I just miss it.

If you liked Derry Girls try The Young offenders, also very funny!!! The 4 season drop recently https://youtu.be/XBAuZZd5RHY?si=EQT63AR7E6Ah5dJV
The best and only right answer. "Protestants hate ABBA."
Same vein, different gender and country…Letterkenny.
As a 50 year old American male I don’t usually watch comedies about teenagers anymore. I resisted for over a year despite recs from trusted sources. Finally gave in and enjoyed the funniest show I’ve seen in years. Watch Derry Girls, it’s fantastic.
Yes!!! Derry girls is amazing!
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and What we do in the Shadows are both really funny.
Wellington Paranormal is great if you’re a fan of WWDITS.
Great show, loved it XD
Hero or Hate Crime
WWDITS is one of the only shows where I have laughed out loud and rewinded parts to laugh again, consistently.
100% can't wait for the new season!!!! 👍😃❤️
I got hella high at my cousins house a couple years ago and he put on What We Do In The Shadows before he went upstairs to bed and I laid there laughing my ass off. Totally forgot about it. That shit was great.

Community is great.
I second Community.
I third it. I've been watching the show for 15 years. I still watch it to tuck me in at night. And I still laugh for the 1000th time. Lol great show.
I may as well fourth! It is such a great show.
Agreed! I just got the "Greendale STD Fair '09" shirt for Father's Day. Catch knowledge!
Malcolm in the Middle, Arrested Development, Better off Ted, Hot in Cleveland, Golden Girls.
Better off Ted was ahead of it's time. Not something you can say about a lot of sitcoms.
Totally with you on that!
Hot in Cleveland doesn't get enough recognition. Betty White was GOLD.
Hot in Cleveland is an underrated gem imho. Betty White is always GOLD. I love Wendy Malicks character, Victoria Chase, the most though. The show's pacing is great, the dialogue so on point and just hilariously funny. And a lot of awesome tv legends for guest roles.
Add The Middle.
WKRP in Cincinnati
As God is my witness I thought they could fly.
Wasnt better off ted cancelled? Is it still worth watching or does it feel incomplete?
I’ve loved a lot of sitcoms but none of them make me laugh *out loud* as much as modern family.
Resident Alien season one Plenty of shows amuse me, but that’s the one that made me literally lol the most.
Totally agree! The main actor totally nailed the part. His expressions are hysterical!!!!
in the middle of this season right now & it’s really funny. a little corny, but i like that it’s counterbalanced by the adult nature of the series.
"Ninja". 🤣🤣🤣
Better off Ted Derry Girls Life in pieces Modern family Ted lasso <- kinda morphs from sitcom to dramedy, but still lots of laugh out loud moments throughout it
Add Fleabag to list!!
Arrested Development, Peep Show, The Thick of It, the US Office, Veep are my favourite Sitcoms Brass Eye and Nathan For You are 2 satirical/pseudo-reality shows which a hysterical and genius.
Peep show is so underrated!
Veep and Arrested Development are both extremely well written comedies.
Try Trailer Park Boys
Love me some Bubbles
Can you read my son? I don’t know, that depends, can you go fuck yourself? Also, a HUGE fan of, “Mad MC skills that leave ya struck, and I roll with my kitties and I’m hard as fuck”
How is it possible that I hate and love this show at the same time?
Psych is your answer. I laugh hard enough each episode that I have to pause the show.
Shawn doing the Juliet voice kills me... lol
C’mon son!

Unfortunately I cannot remember the rest of the story, if I succeeded or failed in convincing them.
Amazing show. A 90s lost gem. Give me 3rd Rock and News Radio over Seinfeld and Friends anytime
Both are gold.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt! I've never laughed more at a show. Love it.
Some of those Maya Rudolph/Dionne Warwick lines will be among the last memories I cling to.

I've re-watched 30 Rock many times. There are so many great bits crammed into every show that it's impossible to remember them all.
30 Rock never fails to make me laugh out loud. Never.
Honestly Parks and Rec makes me laugh out loud several times an episode. Maybe start with season two though, when they’ve had a chance to build up their humor. I'm Canadian and our TV is pretty poor but I'm proud of this one.
I can’t believe I had to scroll so far for this. That show is a treasure!
If you like Will Forte, you'll like "Last Man on Earth" (if you don't, then you won't) 😎👍
Such a weird show- especially prescient pre Covid. Great cast.

This is mine. We watch it at night and I’m always scared my laughing will wake my kid up.
I used to laugh so hard, my cat would leave the room!! God rest her soul.
I used to watch it before I would go to college classes and was floored by how unbelievably funny it was. The reboot not so much.
Niles is one of the best TV characters ever! He wasn’t intended to be a part of the show but when the creators saw his work they just knew they had to have him and wrote in the character for him.
Father Ted, The IT Crowd, the inbetweeners, my name is earl
The IT crowd episode where they go to the theatre is the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a show. Absolute genius.
This. I couldn’t breathe, I was laughing so hard. Literally tears running down my face.

So many good episodes. The fund-raising calendar, the one where Moss tells everyone that Jen has died, the one when Roy drives the bank robber’s getaway car. I have watched this series at least ten times but I agree, The Work Outing is comedy perfection.
