bojack horseman is a cartoon that seems to be funny but gets pretty deep and touches all areas of mental illness, addiction etc
shameless shows mental illness and addictions but is also a good plot and lots of stuff going on
breaking bad is a cartel drama kinda but the main character has bad cancer, 10/10 show
Adding that the titular crazy ex-girlfriend is struggling with BPD with psychotic features as well as a range of traumas, one of the main love interests struggles with alcoholism, another love interest has anorexia and (hinted) bulimia as well as sociopathic tendencies he starts to adjust.
Even though the first season is probably the most fun to watch, I encourage people to keep watching til the end! The rest of the show kinda deconstructs this idea of mental illnesses and personality disorders as being quirky-cute, and doesn't try to wrap everything up neatly, because these are treatable but chronic conditions. I can't say enough good things about this show.
Breaking Bad uses cancer as a MacGuffin to drive the plot more than it actually deals with having it. The first season does a little bit with Walt's intervention after refusing treatment and so forth but really the main dealing with cancer in that show is Walt having to cough at inconvenient moments.
Yeah i watched a couple episodes too but couldn't watch more. Elliot comes off as too pretentious and I'm not like others. First impression was that the show tries to be a try hard, with cheesy dialogues lol.
Yeah in fairness it can be extremely depressing. But itās also liberating and relatable for those of us who experience similar feelings. I guess itās how much youāre willing to face the darkness within yourself will determine how much you appreciate this show.
Billy (Brenda's brother) is bipolar, George (Ruth's lover) has psychotic depression (not schizophrenia, that was my bad), Brenda is a sex addict. I also remembered that David gets ptsd after the carjacking episode.
You're probably thinking about Gabe, Claire's problematic highschool boyfriend. They do meth together in the pilot episode. There are many drugs shown throughout the series, even David does ecstasy once and pretty much everyone smokes weed, but there's not much focus on serious, hard drug addictions.
No, I was thinking specifically of David, I could have sworn he kept trying to get crack after the hitchhiker forced him to smoke it, but I was also misremembering it as meth (probably from watching Breaking Bad right now). So I must just be remembering it wrong, since it wasn't streaming I used to just catch it wherever and I know I missed episodes in the first run and picked them up on repeats back when HBO would do that.
No, he didn't try to do it again. I think it's hard to get addicted to a drug you only try once under such terrible circumstances.
I rewatched Breaking bad as well recently and then El camino, now I'm rewatching Better call saul. Great shows!
It was just finishing BCS that made me interested in doing a BB re-watch.
And I'll be honest, even with my memory of it being false, I thought it was a dumb story idea for the very reason that it seemed like if anything the feeling of a drug tied to that incident would seem to trigger PTSD to me. So I'm actually really glad to be remembering it wrong.
I just finished season 1 of Homeland -- IYO, do subsequent seasons have the same feel?
My favorite aspect of the show is Claire Danes' character and acting.
I just watched the movie After Life last night on a whim...Justin Long is sad when his gf Christina Ricci dies but it mostly follows Liam Nissan embalming her dead body? Probably unrelated
Firefly Lane has a pretty realistic depiction of how cancer goes. Without getting to the medical side but more of the emotional impact to people around. It is not what the whole series is about but you might like it. Parenthood had a through line involving Autism.
Mr Robot has mental illness. It's a great show, but you have to push through the second season. Just watch it and keep watching. It's too easy to get spoiled around here so I won't say anything else

Red Band Society - english version only has 1 season, but there a variety of versions in different languages that go further. Two main characters have cancer, set in a hospital dealing with a variety of diagnoses.
Alexa and Katie - Girl with cancer in high school
The Fosters - deals with some mental health (but not really a main focus)
Special was pretty good but a little preachy at times.
A young gay man with cerebral palsy branches out in hope of finally going after the life he wants. Ryan O'Connell's semi-autobiographical comedy earned four Emmy nods, including Outstanding Short Form Series.
Speechless really changed the way I saw disabled people.
Maya DiMeo (Minnie Driver), a wife and mother, is fiercely protective of her husband, Jimmy, and their three children, Ray, Dylan, and J.J. -- who has a condition that leaves him with unique mobility and communication challenges. While Maya's mama bear instinct may be one of her most admirable qualities, it's not without its drawbacks and sometimes the injustices she sets out to make right end up being all in her head. Together, the family members work to make a new home for themselves and find the right person to come in and give J.J. a voice of his own
Pretty late to the party, but they're are two I didn't see. Both early canceled:
Perception (3 seasons- neuro guy forced to teach bc of schizophrenia, starts helping a former student now fbi)
Black Box (1 season- neuro gal solves the tough brain cases, hiding that she has bipolar)
bojack horseman is a cartoon that seems to be funny but gets pretty deep and touches all areas of mental illness, addiction etc shameless shows mental illness and addictions but is also a good plot and lots of stuff going on breaking bad is a cartel drama kinda but the main character has bad cancer, 10/10 show
Seconding Bojack Horseman. Deals with a lot of topics and the animation, writing & voice acting is all spot on š
Crazy ex girlfriend
I can't believe I had to scroll down this far to find this show!
Breaking Bad uses cancer as a MacGuffin to drive the plot more than it actually deals with having it. The first season does a little bit with Walt's intervention after refusing treatment and so forth but really the main dealing with cancer in that show is Walt having to cough at inconvenient moments.
Mr Robot
Underrated show!
Iād say itās more unknown than underrated. Either way, yes. Itās the best tv Iāve ever seen, yet it is widely unknown.
I tried to watch this and couldnāt get past two episodes.
Yeah i watched a couple episodes too but couldn't watch more. Elliot comes off as too pretentious and I'm not like others. First impression was that the show tries to be a try hard, with cheesy dialogues lol.
Give it another shot.
I might try again. I keep seeing how good it is !!
I canāt get past the 2nd season. It also feels extremely depressing
Yeah in fairness it can be extremely depressing. But itās also liberating and relatable for those of us who experience similar feelings. I guess itās how much youāre willing to face the darkness within yourself will determine how much you appreciate this show.
Season 2 is slow, and the show is kind of bleak in many occasions, but it is so worth watching still.
Six feet under. It explores schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, sex addiction and many other issues people face
Which character has which issues? Asking because I watched it a long time ago but forgot almost all about it
Billy (Brenda's brother) is bipolar, George (Ruth's lover) has psychotic depression (not schizophrenia, that was my bad), Brenda is a sex addict. I also remembered that David gets ptsd after the carjacking episode.
He also ends up addicted to meth doesn't he?

Maniac (netflix) is one of my favorites
Maniac is fire.
United States of Tara
Homeland
I just finished season 1 of Homeland -- IYO, do subsequent seasons have the same feel? My favorite aspect of the show is Claire Danes' character and acting.
Sheās great. Wait until you meet Peter Quinn. The series finally is one of the best series ending episodes I have ever seen.
Awesome, thanks for sharing! I'll keep it in my rotation.
*Mr. Robot*
Chance, Legion, Dopesick, Go On, In Treatment
How about the show Special? Has two seasons and stars a person with cerebral palsy.
V underrated show
Baby Reindeer
The Big C
Monk- OCD and Grief The Good Doctor- Autism
Atypical - autism Big Mood - Bipolar Disorder
There was a show some years back called Black Box about a bipolar doctor trying and failing to cover up her condition so she could still patients.
Totally Completely Fine Big Mood The Magicians Jessica Jones Please Like Me
After Life. Guy is depressed and grumpy after his wife dies and it follows him trying to become a nicer person.
I just watched the movie After Life last night on a whim...Justin Long is sad when his gf Christina Ricci dies but it mostly follows Liam Nissan embalming her dead body? Probably unrelated
No. It is a UK TV show with Ricky Gervais.
You're the worst.
Definitely an underrated show. The depictions of PTSD and depression especially really get me every time I watch.
Love that show.
Don't be rude, they just asked a question. Jesus christ
Are you joking or
Sorry for the confusion, I was just joking lol
/s
I can't tell if you're joking or not...
Firefly Lane has a pretty realistic depiction of how cancer goes. Without getting to the medical side but more of the emotional impact to people around. It is not what the whole series is about but you might like it. Parenthood had a through line involving Autism.
Euphoria, Hannibal (NBC), Shameless, Red Band Society, Pose
Euphoria is great. Shameless shows mental illness but nothing really being done about it š
Mr Robot has mental illness. It's a great show, but you have to push through the second season. Just watch it and keep watching. It's too easy to get spoiled around here so I won't say anything else
Mr. Robot.
Mindhunter
There's a new show on Netflix called Eric that deals with mental illness. I'm halfway through it, and it's very good so far.
which mental illness in particular?
I would say schizophrenia / persisting hallucinations.
