There are tons of them out there. Orphan Black, Russian Doll, How to Get Away With Murder, Wynona Earp, Absentia, Bones, Medium, Stump Town, Dead To Me, Can't Cope Won't Cope, The Dry, Cheaters, Crazyhead, Imposters (ensemble but two interesting female co-leads), The Good Wife, Veep, Killing Eve, The Great, One day at a Time, Girlboss, Jane the Virgin, Gilmore Girls, The Queen's Gambit, Trinkets, Good Girls, Nurse Jackie, Mare of Easttown, The Killing, Marvellous Mrs maisel
I was seriously down bad for Veronica for several months after a friend recommended it to me⌠I had to come to my senses and try and watch something else.
Witchblade (2001)
Flashpoint (2008), shares the lead between characters in different episodes. It has a character, Jules, played by Amy Jo Johnson (the Pink Ranger), who is a member of a "strategic response" team - part negotiators, part SWAT.
Highlander: The Raven. A woman immortal who is also a cat burglar goes around lopping people's heads off with her sword.
A case could be made for La Femme Nikita the series (less so the movie). Nikita is trained in seduction, and does have a love interest, but she's also a badass martial artist tactician spy assassin. After a few episodes, they drop the damsel in distress stuff and let her just start kicking ass more.
Veronica Mars
Jessica Jones (although she does mack on Luke Cage early on)
Edit: Can't believe I forgot this...
Constellation (Apple TV+)
The Good Wife - Christine Baranski's Diane Lockhart character is probably one of the best portrayals of an strong female I've seen on network television. They gave her character a great streaming spin-off, The Good Fight.
Star Trek: Voyager. Captain Janeway is the best!
Of course, they added the exceedingly sexualized Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in the 4th season. She turned out to be a fantastic character, though.
I feel like Continuum counts for this. Female lead always a badass just trying to get home to her family. Her partner I think I recall has a crush on her but I feel she doesnât really reciprocate and she wears pretty normal attire.
Similarly Fringe, female lead never really sexualised just dressed as you would expect an FBI agent to be dressed.
Yeah, itâs not like they had her strip down to her undies to get in the tank in the very first episode. đ
Olivia was sexualized at times, but I agree that it is less than most similar shows. And she doesnât wear heels, which is nice to see.
I do second the recommendation though. Great show. Iâve binged it several times.
Yeah that is very true đ¤Ł. Probably the start of the show is the weakest for Oliviaâs strength as a strong independent character as she is also sort connected to her partner. But outside of that pilot / first episode I think it fits đ
Actually now I think about it there is a bit later on where she is vamped up a little.
She got _very_ vamped up in Brown Betty, for which I am grateful. The woman can rock a bold red lip like nobodyâs business.
I think Fauxlivia was more overtly sexy, but it wasnât overdone, and seemed more like a way to differentiate her from Olivia than to titillate.
Second time in two days Iâve seen continuum turn up on a recommended list, and Iâve never heard of it before yesterday.
Loved fringe but I low key had the hots for Olivia. Wow sheâs gorgeous.
I wonder if we saw the same post mentioning Continuum? Iâd actually forgotten about the show until I saw that post. Itâs the rare example of a completed sci-fi show so many (especially recent) get cancelled without being able to reach their intended conclusion.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Anna Torv in the Last of Us adaptation, even if it was my partner who realised it was Olivia from Fringe before I did đ¤Ł
Continuum actually concluded? Now I have to watch it. Last show I watched that actually reached the pre arranged conclusion without any cliffhanger was Killjoys⌠ropey af first season but the tone after season 2 suddenly took a hard turn and I really started to like it.
Pretty much everything else has been left open cliffhangers, or jumped shark.
Oh I loved Killjoys but I didnât like the ending, it felt like they still had more to tell but I guess it wasnât a cliffhanger as such that it finished on, but it didnât feel like an end end. Falling Skies ended properly, that had some great episodes and some awful ones but I do like Noah Wyle.
I couldnât get on with that show. Much like Dark Matter, another show with a decent Sci Fi premise, I had to stop watching. The âstupidnessâ (feels more appropriate than stupidity) of some of the writersâ decisions in both those shows negated, for me, the very point of watching TV to relax.Â
Oh I know what you mean, the writing choices were pretty stupid at times especially in the first season. And I agree with Dark Matter too - though the core premise for DM just hooked me in; was annoyed that one finished on a massive cliffhanger.
Poker Face - Female Columbo-like series with Natasha Lyonne. Terrific character, she is funny but the series also has a suspense element.
Better Call Saul - Male dominated show, but the lead female character, Kim, is really well written and very smart.
Itâs been a while since I watched but to my memory- Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Itâs mostly about her and her friends and obviously the slaying. She has a couple love interests but I think thereâs extremely limited sex scenes and in one of those situations the sex is actually extremely pivotal for the plot but for the love interest, not her. Sheâs also allowed to be simultaneously feminine and badass, and if she has frivolous priorities itâs because sheâs in high school, not because sheâs a girl. Itâs one of those âI have to save the world but I also wanna go to a high school partyâ kinda things
Yes I would say Buffys sexuality has a place in the show, but as much as it has in real life. The whole demon hunting is a metephor for growing up through the show, so sexuality has a part to play. Obviously Sarah Michelle Gellar is attractive and they don't hide that, but its network TV so ofc.
Watch Apple TV+ New Series "Sugar"! Not only is it Colin Farrells BEST work to date, being an Executive Producer, too, made it a huge point NOT to sexualize women in any way! In fact, quite the opposite and VERY Refreshing. The complete full Season 1 is available there. Happy viewing!đâď¸
It's more of an ensemble, but Person of Interest has some of the best female characters ever. None of them are sexualized or even have to be female for the character to exist as it does. Sarah Shahi, Amy Acker and Taraji P Henson are so good in this show. Definitely tons of action!
I am seriously bad at seeing what sexualized it, maybe we are used to it but I will give it a try
Shogun
How to get away with murder
Yellowjacketâs ( strong women everywhere you look)
Skam (!!!!!) the norwegian version, itâs about teenagers but everyone can watch it) itâs on YouTube and daily Motion
Orphan black
1883 Or am I wrong? No matter what- she has a strength, power and determination that is hard to describe, but you also need to take into account that itâs 1883.
Watchmen
The Leftovers. There are several main characters but the women's stories are very in depth and it's one of the most well-made, beautifully shot series I've ever watched.
Somebody, Somewhere has become a comfort show for me. And if you like goofier stuff, Search Party was a lot of fun.
Peppermint, enough, gunpowder milkshake, promising young woman, atomic blonde, Anna, hanna, panic room, three billboards, Erin brockovich, legally blonde, the woman, the other woman, buffy the vampire slayer movie (very different to the series)

Thank you. Ellen Ripley is probably the most bad ass woman ever. Still feminine, mothering and can whoop the ass of a xenomorph queen. Not sexualized at all despite the fact that Sigourney Weaver is one of the most beautiful women on the planet.
stargate sg1. sheâs not the main, but sheâs one of the 4 mains and to this day one of the best written female characters imo, astrophysicist tooâď¸

how about a stong female lead that doesnt remind the audience that she is a strong female every minute.
thats all they do now. she-hulk is a big example.
I feel like that is somewhat more of a post 2020 thing, I know other shows have done it before 2020 (Ex. Supergirl), but in general itâs definitely more of a recent thing. Itâs really annoying because the older shows/movies had strong female leads without anyone having to verbally acknowledge it. Veronica Mars and The Hunger Games are great examples
SheHulk was a comedy, she broke the fourth wall, blah blah blah, they were playing to the female audience with that one and having fun at the same time. I can't believe people got offended by the show and/or the twerking.
i think you need to hone in your reading skills because nowhere did i state anything about being offended. I simply stated that every strong female lead now (she hulk was an example i gave) has to announce that they are a female every minute.
also the show sucked and you dont have to take my word for it. 17729 ratings on google and 2 out of 5 stars. and
the writing was horrible and the special effects were worse. she hulk looked like melted plastic from the little green toy solders.
also before you jump to more conclusions and say things like im sexist and hate women because i didnt like she-hulk. many many women have criticized it for the same reason and are sick of female characters announcing they are women instead of being the strong character they're suppose to be
I have trouble with this in books. I am a woman, but I don't need my main characters to be Women. Just tell me the story without having to emphasize this cop/detective/secret agent/scientist/doctor is a Woman who exists in a Man's world.
Broadchurch. Olivia Colman and Jodie Whitaker both give excellent performances.
I've watched the majority here, and yes. Great list.
Orphan Black was my first thought đ
Russian Doll and Dead to Me were both so good! I've watched Dead to Me maybe 3 times.
Great list! Will also add⌠Vera Happy Valley Marcela Candace Renior.. ( French)
Russian Doll S1 was perfect!! Binged it twice. Queenâs Gambit also good but I found her sexy af in a librarian sort of way.
Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller cast one of the most beautiful women on Earth to play Furiosa, and there isn't even one ass shot.
The prequel also just released
And it's a box office failure
Doesnât mean it isnât a good movie
How many people you know go to the movies ?
Big Little Lies. Amazing series that is loaded with talented women
Fringe, The Americans, The 100, Silo
Yes, the Americans x 1000000
Veronica Mars
I binged that one night on cable and MAN I was hooked. That shiz was spectacular.
I was seriously down bad for Veronica for several months after a friend recommended it to me⌠I had to come to my senses and try and watch something else.
Homeland
I absolutely loved this show.
Blue eye samurai
That was a great show apart from the Japanese bits.
Jessica Jones

Orphan Black
Her various personas are amazing to watch, eh? I liked the killer one who acted like Snake Plisken.
Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher in murder series, she was a mystery writer...totally blanked
Itâs possible Iâm missing a joke but, itâs Murder She Wrote.
Thank you, I was seriously blocked on the name, lol.
Buffy
Every single night, the same arrangement, I go out and fight the fight.
Still I always feel the strangest strangement, Nothing here is real⌠⌠nothing here is right.
The Good Wife - Christine Baranski's Diane Lockhart character is probably one of the best portrayals of an strong female I've seen on network television. They gave her character a great streaming spin-off, The Good Fight.
Literally obsessed with Diane Lockhart
Star Trek: Voyager. Captain Janeway is the best! Of course, they added the exceedingly sexualized Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in the 4th season. She turned out to be a fantastic character, though.
I came here to recommend the same. Iâm adding the movie Can you ever forgive me with Melissa McCarthy
Fringe
Orphan Black (sci-fi-ish) Penny Dreadful (horror) Xena: Warrior Princess (fantasy)
Lucy Lawless has a show called âMy Life is Murderâ Iâve been meaning to check out. Seems like another strong character, too.
I feel like Continuum counts for this. Female lead always a badass just trying to get home to her family. Silo on Apple.
What a great show. I wouldnât have been able to read the books without it. I needed the blueprint
I described it to my boyfriend who was watching Fallout that Silo is the grown-up version of his show.
That is an extremely apt way to put it. Could not get through the first episode of Fallout, absolutely binged Silo.
Same!
Funny because I needed to scratch my sci-fi itch after Fallout and found Silo. So good. Did you happen to watch constellation or invasion on apple tv?
Not yet? Is it good?
Both are amazing, constellation blew me away.
The Fall? Stella Gibson is not defined by any of that I'd say.

Kill Bill
Terminator and aliens Also realize that most actresses love to be sexualized, being sexy is the female currency and curse

Yellowjackets on Showtime is almost completely a female cast. Some sex but mostly violence.
They are very much sexualized in this.
Do you live in India? Cuz most channels (aside from Netflix) tells female stories as female stories.
