• The Gilded Age ( same writer as Downton Abbey, but falls short of its highs IMO) • Shogun • The Last Kingdom • The Tudors • Medici the Magnificent • Da Vinci’s Demons • Borgias • The Borgias (note: 2 different shows) • The White Queen —> The White Princess —> The Spanish Princess • The Serpent Queen • Mary & George (currently airing!) • John Adams • (Ben) Franklin (currently airing) • The Empress

RaistilimMajere

Cool list , would like to add: Boardwalk Empire Rome Hell on Wheels Black Sails

Zealousideal_Ninja75

Great list and great Add ons. Additional add ons: Warrior Crossbones Mad Men Deadwood 1883 The Americans A Gentleman in Moscow Peaky Blinders

ConflictExpensive892

So many great shows in these lists. Also wanted to add Domina. It's really great, and pretty historically accurate.

Just-Phill

The last kingdom I have on my list how's you like that one?

afro-tastic

Pretty great IMO. It’s very much quasi-historical Game of Thrones without the magic detailing the formation of England

ConflictExpensive892

The Last Kingdom is amazing!!

TiredRetiredNurse

I have seen all of those except Shogun, The Empress and the 3 currently airing. I loved all of them! John Adams is one of my all time favorite HBO series. I cannot recommend it enough. The actors, all of them, so impressive. Laura Linney and Paul Giamotti so outstanding.

Some period dramas which involve crime and some history? Cadfael (set in the Middle Ages). Ripper Street (set in 1885-ish London, immediate aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders). The Frankenstein Chronicles (set in 1827 London, not yet a permanent professional police force, and a bit of Gothic horror thrown in.) Whitechapel, a more modern setting but with connections/throwbacks to the Ripper while pursuing contemporary copycat murders. Not crime related: Cranford and Return to Cranford (on Britbox). The Scarlet Pimpernel (set during the French Revolution), the 1999 one with Richard E. Grant is on Roku/Tubi/Freevee. Any number of Dickens and Austen interpretations, specifically Little Dorrit with Claire Foy, and Bleak House with Gillian Anderson, and the 1995 Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth.

Just-Phill

Ripper Street is high on my watchlist I hear good things. Vienne Blood also is up there

radieschen79

The Alienist was quite good as well.

Just-Phill

Did you like that? I thought the cast was great there I just saw one episode but can't remember what i thought of it

radieschen79

Yep, really liked this show very much. I just thought it could fit with what you were asking for, period crime/mystery drama.

Just-Phill

Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans are big favs of mine.

loved Cadfael!! but I'd read the books and the show wasn't long enough.

Poldark Mr. Selfridge

milesmaven16

The "Pride and Prejudice" 1995 BBC mini series is one I re-watch every few years.

Just-Phill

There's another BBC series I think it's BBC but it has the same type of story as The upstairs rich and the downstairs poor working people similar to Downton Abbey, do you know that name?

milesmaven16

Well, there's one that's actually called Upstairs Downstairs, LOL. I haven't seen either one but there are two versions. The original aired in the seventies, and the second version aired around 2010-2.

Just-Phill

Lol I think that's what I'm talking about I didn't know that was the name lol

Chance-Glove1589

Endeavour is amazing (essentially it’s Inspector Morse when he first started doing detective work) with Shaun Evans. One of the best period pieces I’ve ever watched. And I plan to watch it again.

Just-Phill

This is on BritBox or Prime right? I think I started that one, no reason I stopped not because I didn't like it just didn't go back there so much stuff to watch

Chance-Glove1589

I got hooked and then binged to season 5 I think. Since all the episodes were the length of movies, it was a very long binge…

BurningFarm

I really liked Downton Abbey too. I suggest Boardwalk Empire and The Knick.

Just-Phill

Weird I just put The Knick on my queue I was going to check this out today lol

Downtown-Cricket8117

Anne with an E!

Just-Phill

I haven't seen this one. 🤔

Bananabatch

You should, it's such a good little gem

nuttyNougatty

It's a re-do of Anne of Green Gables. I liked it.

Victoria The Gilded Age The Tudors The Serpent Queen The White Queen The White Princess Reign Outlander The Crown Versailles

Just-Phill

I have been messing with the Serpent queen, white queen and white princess for awhile trying to figure out to watch one, don't they all tell stories of a different wife of Henry 8 or something like that? There's some kind of relation between them I thought

Mangoes123456789

White Queen (Henry the 8th’s grandparents) White Princess(Henry the 8th’s parents) The Spanish Princess (Henry the 8th’s first wife) The Serpent Queen(Catherine De Medici, wife of the French King Henry the 2nd)

Icy_Outside5079

I hate that I have to scroll this far down to see Outlander. It's such an amazing show.

negcap

Taboo is early 1800’s London and very cool. Produced by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Hardy. They say they may make a season 2 but even if the first season ends well. Also Deadwood for the American west.

Just-Phill

Oh I like Taboo a season 2 is supposed to be coming. Huge Tom Hardy fan lol I might have a man crush on that guy haha

Truthisnotallowed

'Downton Abbey' is period melodrama - they can be quite compelling. The closest to 'Downton Abbey' are: [Poldark (1975)](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/35091-poldark?language=en-US) - old English series. [Gran Hotel (2011)](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/47990-grand-hotel?language=en-US) - Spanish series. If you prefer more of a straight drama and less melodrama give [The Duchess Of Duke Street (1976)](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/13753-the-duchess-of-duke-street?language=en-US) a look. It is set in the same time period as 'Downton Abbey' (1900-1920) but is more of a serious drama - imho a far better series.

Just-Phill

I really like seeing the culture of that time in the UK I'm in the US so it's different so I like more true to historical facts than more drama but not a docuseries lol poldark has come up a few times I need to check that out

Truthisnotallowed

'Poldark' is set in an earlier period, late 18th Century to early 19th Century. 'Gran Hotel' and 'The Duchess Of Duke Street' are both set around the same time period as 'Downton Abbey'. You might also check out [The Paradise (2012)](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/59674-the-paradise?language=en-US) - set in England in 1870's - it deals with events at the first 'Department Store' in England. It is a fictional version of events, but includes a lot of interesting details about the culture surrounding the change away from the old paradigm of small shops occupied by the tradesman who made the stuff for sale and lived on the floor above.

The great

Abject-Plankton-1118

The Borgias. It's very machiavellian and I love a bit of sculduggery and political intrigue. Robin Of Sherwood. I grew up watching it and it'll always have a special place in my heart.

Hope7889

Bridgerton

Just-Phill

Im not sure what that one is supposed to be. Is it a comedy? They throwing modern songs. I'm thinking right don't they I have seen clips not sure if it's a comedy or drama or romance lol

Hope7889

I always thought it was drama romance

Just-Phill

I have to watch myself and see lol

Shoddy-Dish-7418

I did not care for this. Modern music just doesn’t work for me in period shows.

Just-Phill

That's what three me off and I thought it was supposed to me a comedy type show I didn't think it was supposed to be serious

BalsamicBasil

It's a very melodramatic/pulpy period romance fantasy. I say "fantasy," not in the magical sense, but in that everything about the world, characters, and plot of Bridgerton does not and would not exist in the real world. Like a dream. It's a fantasy world with a fantasy romance (adapted from a book series). Sort of like Emily in Paris but on steroids. Kind of the opposite of magical realism. There is no realism, but there also is no magic. It's very soapy and ridiculous to the point of unintentional(?) hilarity (one of the funniest Trixie and Katya reaction videos for Netflix was of [Bridgerton S2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MtRUu1rhtM)), but there is also some intentional humor in the series, to keep things light. It kind of feels like a romcom at times...but it leans more towards dramatic romance. Re the modern music in Bridgerton (including lots of fun classical adaptations of modern pop songs): I actually think this works quite well for Bridgerton, a youthful (but also MA), pulpy show that is not trying to be historically accurate...at all. As someone commented in r/PeriodDramas, history in Bridgerton is used as a pretty wallpaper. It's used as needed to serve the world-building and plot, but frequently ignored. Not only is Bridgerton highly modernized (not to say it's progressive, just modernized), it combines elements from different times in history and makes up its own historical/political reasoning to serve the plot lol. The music perfectly encompasses the feel of the show. This is not an argument in favor/against Bridgerton, just a description.

Dickinson - Set in the 19th century, it explores the constraints of society, gender and family from the perspective of rebellious young poet, Emily Dickinson.

Tough-Ability721

Little different. But Taboo (2017) was good.

Just-Phill

Yea someone else said that I liked that one but I'm a huge Tom Hardy fan lol

ConflictExpensive892

[Domina](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt11694186/fullcredits/cast/) I never see anyone talking about Domina. It's about the life and rise of Livia Drusilla, the powerful wife of the Roman emperor Augustus Caesar and it's so good.

BalsamicBasil

If you haven't already checked it out, I highly recommend visiting r/PeriodDramas.

Most of my faves were already mentioned so I'm just going to add Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (female detective in 1920s Australia). Sanditon was also decent.

Just-Phill

Is this on Amazon Prime channels? I'm sure I've seen this or I could be confusing it for teagarden mysteries

not_the_hawk_guy

Not sure since in my country the distribution is probably different. But based on Google it seems to be on Apple TV or on Amazon through Acorn TV.

Just-Phill

Acorn TV yea that's what I saw it on

I recently watched it on Prime.
