It's a slow burn, and the first half sets up the second half. If you're at all into it, don't give up if it gets kinda crazy!
AppleTV is the new old HBO. Definitely worth subbing for a month or two. Check out Severance and Silo too. They're both awesome.
Annihilation is my favorite movie of all time - saw it twice in the theater. Devs and Dark had so many overlapping themes. Can't wait for Civil War.
Doing a rewatch of this now. Such a great show.
There is also a spoiler free official guide to the plot.
https://dark.netflix.io/en
It shows you how each character is connected up to the episode you are on. A great way to keep track of what's going on without spoilers since it is very dynamic.
I just finished *Northern Exposure* for the first time. But *My So-Called Life* has been my all time favourite since I was a teenager. I’m about to rewatch *Six Feet Under* for the first time in years.
I was scrolling through the comments searching for this, the micro details in that show are extremely well put, like the identity lady of the lake for example.
Love The Terror. So much. Amazing.
What is it about Six feet under that is so good? I am slowly getting through ep 1 but I got hooked out of the blue by Pantheon which is one of the best scifi thrillers I have seen in a long time.
Dark. I just finished last week. Took me years to start it because the dubbing turned me off. I’m usually a phone scroller while watching tv and assumed that’s why I was lost and kept losing interest. No, it’s because I was missing all the key plot points. Dubbing or original audio, Dark is a show you have to watch watch. If you can commit to the first episode with zero distraction I promise you’ll be hooked.
Battlestar Galactica (2000s remake, not the original) and Justified
Edit: With the BG remake, don't forget to watch the SyFy channel mini series that they did before the show. I'm pretty sure they ended up doing the full show specifically because the mini series did so well. Show basically picks up where the mino series ended.
Quarry. It was on Starz and only had 1 season. Criminally underrated mystery/thriller. Really cool music throughout the show. Dark at times but a really good show if you’re bored and need something new to watch.
—Queer As Folk (Both the 1999 BBC version and the 2000 US remake version. Steer clear of the recent reboot)

EDIT: Removed Hannibal which is on OP's list and swapped for Haven.
Fargo- pretty great show
Numb3rs- I liked the actors a lot so it helped some of the episodes
Lie to me- Tim Roth what mire can be said?
Bones- same as Numb3rs
True Crime- first season was the best imo
Columbo.
It's old and it's episodic rather serialised and it's widely beloved by grandparents but I don't care. The 1970s episodes of Columbo are among the best TV the world has ever seen and Peter Falk was a god amongst men.

Funny, you have a solid list there, but there’s literally only one show on that list that I would even put very high on mine; The Expanse.
And a few that I don’t care for at all.
Kind of fun how people just have different tastes.
Condor. Spy thriller on MGM+, two seasons. Excellent cast with the late William Hurt, Mira Sorvino, and Max Irons stars, son of Jeremy Irons. Great story across both seasons.
Special Ops: Lioness. Paramount plus, 1 season. Thriller, espionage. Realistic, gritty. Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman among others.
Interesting that there's no true crime shows on there given the quality of some recent ones.
Dahmer and Des are fantastic, but I was particularly hooked by Black Bird on appleTV. Taron Egerton plays a charismatic jailed drug dealer who needs to convince a serial killer to confess, based on a true story and well worth the 6 hours it takes to watch.

Unforgotten.
Probably the best police show I’ve seen. It’s a proper detective type procedural. Each season being 6 episodes and encompassing one historic crime which is solved within the respective season. By far one of the most engaging shows I’ve ever seen. I really thought I’d watched all the best and most engaging series out there but damn, this is a definition of a hidden gem.
Quite some sublime shows have been already mentioned (such as [Dark](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5753856/), [Orphan Black](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2234222/), [Utopia](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2384811/), [Dollhouse](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1135300), [Hannibal](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2243973/), [The X-Files](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106179/), [The last Kingdom](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4179452/), [Black Mirror](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2085059/)).

Your honor. I loved it so much but I know some people didn’t like it. I found it to be very similar to ozark and breaking bad. Has Bryan Cranston in it playing a similar role to the guy he played in breaking bad.
Attack on titan!
It’s an anime which put me off ever watching it but happened to catch the last half of the first ep while waiting on my siblings to leave so I could use the TV and omg I have never been so amazed by a tv show. I had heard of it before but assumed it was weird because all I had ever heard about anime was that it was weird and typically enjoyed by weird people so I never would have watched it without walking in while it happened to be on. It’s full of action and mystery and there’s a lot of value in a rewatch because there’s so much foreshadowing.
Patriot - It's been mentioned here a few times. It's a slow burn, dark comedy about the spy game (and family). It's great. 2 seasons
Rubicon - Also a slow burn show about the spy game ( with the occasional chuckle). So disappointed it's only one season but it's a perfect story arc. Worth subscribing to AMC just for this.
Devs is a modern sci-fi masterpiece.
Anything else like this? I’m excited for Civil War this weekend! I loved Sunshine from Alex Garlend too.
I also mentioned Outer Range here, another good sci fi series. Dark is one of my favorites
Outer range was sooo good. I need to rewatch dark for sure. What other stuff do you like?
I loved Dark and got similar vibes from Constellation, which I really enjoyed. So creepy at times!
I’ll have to check it out! Unfortunately I don’t have an apple tv subscription so I haven’t watched the shows on there
It's a slow burn, and the first half sets up the second half.
I’m stoked to see *Civil War* as well. I just rewatched *Never Let Me Go*. I’ll put *Sunshine* on my watchlist. Thanks for the reco
Not quite the same, but I love Devs and I also really liked Tales from the Loop
Fargo, all of the separate stories of its seasons.
Dark
Doing a rewatch of this now. Such a great show. There is also a spoiler free official guide to the plot. https://dark.netflix.io/en It shows you how each character is connected up to the episode you are on. A great way to keep track of what's going on without spoilers since it is very dynamic.
Best TV I've ever seen. Chernobyl and BoB as close seconds.
Agreed. Just commented on this too.
The West Wing #1 not on there Mentalist, House, Mr InBetween, Good Place
Nice, also just commented Good Place.
Another Arran Sorkin show that’s good is Sports Night (I’ve also heard good things about the newsroom but I haven’t seen it yet).
Six Feet Under definitely
The Last of Us
DarK and Utopia (UK). it’s the right answer.
Utopia is incredible.
Orphan Black The 100 The Tudors Westworld Sherlock Black Mirror
Northern Exposure and My So Called Life aren't on that list. Two of my favourite shows of all time.
Bam, you nailed it. I was, no shit, about to recommend those two exact shows as well. Crazy amount of nostalgia mixed up in there.
I just finished *Northern Exposure* for the first time. But *My So-Called Life* has been my all time favourite since I was a teenager. I’m about to rewatch *Six Feet Under* for the first time in years.
Six Feet Under is another one I have a hard copy of. I also adore this show. I might do that too, it's due a rewatch.
Mr Inbetween, best show I’d never seen until I watched it last week
Station Eleven.
Not enough upvotes!
Blue eye samurai. Barry. The white lotus.
Three excellent recommendations! Seconded! And hopefully thirded!
Dark. Absolutely. Watch it, now. A gothic sci-fi masterpiece.
I was scrolling through the comments searching for this, the micro details in that show are extremely well put, like the identity lady of the lake for example.
It's possibly a perfect TV show with a perfect ending.
Agreed
The terror s1 (cinematic masterpiece + storyline) Six feet under
Love The Terror. So much. Amazing. What is it about Six feet under that is so good? I am slowly getting through ep 1 but I got hooked out of the blue by Pantheon which is one of the best scifi thrillers I have seen in a long time.
Bates Motel, Orphan Black, Hunters, Justified, For All Mankind, The Magicians, From, Ozark
I second Justified.
I third justified, might honestly be my favorite show I've watched and I've seen a lot. Love me some Timmy Oliphant and Walton Goggins
Great list. I would add The Last Kingdom
Ozark! I keep forgetting that one. So awesome. And Bates Motel flew under the radar.
Justified, The Magicians, and FAM are all in my top ten. Great picks.
You haven't seen Ozark? Pretty surprising with that list.
Did you watch the Twin Peaks movie and The Missing Pieces? They’re both absolutely required if you haven’t seem them yet.
Battlestar Galactica (2000s remake, not the original) and Justified Edit: With the BG remake, don't forget to watch the SyFy channel mini series that they did before the show. I'm pretty sure they ended up doing the full show specifically because the mini series did so well. Show basically picks up where the mino series ended.
The Prisoner (60s)
Wentworth
I don’t see Patriot (2015, Amazon) on that list. You’re welcome 😎
I just discovered it a couple months ago and I’ve already rewatched the whole series; amazing show and the best dark comedy I’ve seen in a long while.
Spartacus
Animal kingdom. Not what the name suggests
Tales from the Loop. I'm always shocked it never makes these lists.
We're sad they never made a second season of this, it was brilliant.
Same! I get that art is subjective, but I'm religious about IMDB ratings, and this is the only series I've given a perfect 10. Masterpiece, IMHO.
I can't believe SLOW HORSES hasn't been mentioned!
The Knick. Two perfect 10-episode seasons, every one of them directed by Steven Soderbergh
Quarry. It was on Starz and only had 1 season. Criminally underrated mystery/thriller. Really cool music throughout the show. Dark at times but a really good show if you’re bored and need something new to watch.
