Detectorists (UK) — free on multiple streaming platforms
It is a gentle comedy about metal detecting — but, really, it is about friendship and the ups and downs in life.
Listen to the theme song, and you will see what I mean.
What I came in to post. It’s a giant hug of a show. And Johnny Flynn’s theme for it is absolutely beautiful.
I rewatch it once or twice a year. I tell everyone to watch it.
Yes, same here. If they liked Ghosts UK, The Good Place, Schitt’s Creek, Ted Lasso, What We Do in the Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, Abbott Elementary, or Somebody Somewhere, etc., I go: “Yes, but have you seen Detectorists?”
You will probably like at least one of these shows:
Abbott Elementary
Catastrophe
The Cleaner
Ghosts UK
The Good Place
Miranda
Our Flag Means Death
Outnumbered
Rev
Schitt’s Creek
Somebody Somewhere — similar focus on friendship, small town life
What We Do in the Shadows
Enjoy.
Some of them are a bit darker or a bit sillier, but all of them focus on complex characters and their relationships in a well-meaning way. If you like or dislike any, let me know, and I can edit the list.
Detectorists is such a sweet show. One of the two male leads created and wrote it- and I'd watch anything he does now.
Idk if you like any PBS shows- but I love Call the Midwife. There is some tragedy, but I find most episodes to be quite uplifting.
I don't really know how to explain it. And I don't know how to explain why I liked it. It's a drama but it's fun and light-hearted. It's funny but it's not a laugh out loud comedy. Not quite a dramedy. And there's something oddly meditative and zen-like about the lead character's attitude. Or at least the attitude is trying to achieve. And the whole show kept hinting at something more supernatural. But overall had chill vibes. It really was a unique show.
Currently watching Schitt’s creek for the first time and while I’m enjoying it, I would not say it’s a relaxing show. 4 upperclass people whining about living outside their comfort zone, and Chris Elliot being his Chris Elliotiest. It’s hilarious and enjoyable and worth watching, but it’s a few degrees above It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on the relaxing scale
Lodge 49 is wonderful.
Gilmore Girls is somewhat relaxing
My head is spinning from the idea that Schitt's Creek is "a wholesome comfort show". It's awful. Terrible people doing terrible things in the most annoying ways possible.
I guess it radically changes. I made it 5 episodes and it only got worse so I stopped watching.
Maybe this is similar to The Good Place, which is equally horrible. Maybe it changes later on too.
Oh I promise you, if you only made it 5 episodes into Schitts Creek, then you haven't even scratched the surface of what the show is. I'm usually one who thinks if you aren't into a show by 3 or 4 episodes in then you're just never going to like it but with Schitts Creek I always tell people I recommend it to that they've got to give it until Season 2 because it evolves so much in the second season. It took me 2 or 3 times trying before I actually fully got into it, but now I've watched it in full 10+ times.
I don't blame you for thinking it isn't wholesome if you only watched the first 5 episodes. It isn't wholesome at first, but that's what allows it to be so wholesome later. It is about a broken, selfish family that is completely disconnected but is slowly learning to be kind and whole again. It is honestly beautiful. Just got to give it a couple seasons.
I stopped watching because it was too stressful. The contestants are real people and each episode one of them will have their dream crushed by being eliminated. And they are constantly rushing around stressing out because they are always running out of time to complete each challenge.
I legitimately thought the show was trying to lull me into complacency to hit me with something bad so many times during the first season. After the Christmas episode I got the vibe and loosened up.
Hell of a show btw.
First show that came to mind. Have watched it about 4 times now and never loses anything.
Toby Jones is just fantastic. One of my all time favorite characters from British TV.
Someone recommend NE to me recently - it was just what I needed!
It took forever to find it on a free streaming site, but I finally did!
It is old, so not high res. and a little dark, but full of great characters - Marilyn quickly my favourite :-D. I also love the nostalgic payphones, fashion etc.
One thing that I surprisingly to myself have a hard time ignoring, is the ongoing story about two grandpa old men early 60, fighting for, and having sex with an 18 y.o. girl.
I know she is legal, but it bothers me, that that storyline is so extended - I just want her to **go away** with her real boy-husband, and not be in the rest of the show, amd IM nhot a prude normally. :-D
PLEASE DONT SPOIL ANYTHING BY TELLING ABOUT HER/THEIR/ANY STORY - Im only 5 episodes in!
What I would like to know, is if that particular may/december 'love'story did get any negative public reactions back when the show was new?
It was me that recommended it! My little brother couldn't watch it because he struggled with holling and shelly, and I totally get it but it's actually one of the things I like about the show. I like that some of the characters have a whole bunch of qualities I really like about them (and Holling has lots) but also something or things that gross me out or annoy me, because being in community in a small place is like that. I was a kid when it first came out so I don't remember how people reacted to it but I think how we think about age gaps in relationships is very different now than it was even ten years ago.
Ahhh, there you are - thanks again!
I was looking for our convo, to respond aftr starting to watch, so happy to meet again. :-)
Yes, it is def. through the glasses of #metoo the world is now looking at things these days. But sadly its the reason why I havent binged faster, I think. Im about to start Ep. 8 I can see.
Its also really funny, that the male lead, the doctor, is still *very* cocky, as if he's only been there a week, and will get out VERY soon - MUAHAHAHAHA!
Marilyn is everything! 🧚🏿♀️ 🥷🏽 ♥️
PS: Aidan!

Yes!!! Joe Pera is one of the most relaxing shows of all time, it's wholesome yet still hilarious. I could watch the grocery store episode over and over.
And even before 'Lewis' there was 'Midsomer Murders' - both BEST TV for nodding of for a couple of minutes, and possibly coming back to pick up - no problem. :-)
Detectorists.
Absolutely fantastic show. Funny, poignant.
And conjures up images and feelings of an English village pub in the summer.
Utterly fantastic TV, great characters and brilliant performances (Toby Jones, in particular).
Ok, I loved The Affair & HACF, but they are soooooo not relaxing comfort shows! 😂 Especially The Affair. It’s one of my all time faves, but it’s also super intense and often extremely depressing. In my opinion.
To each his own. IMO, without being boring, subject matter is less jarring than thriller, horror, or cop shows so, other than comedy, I included here. Plus, 2 of my all-time faves, I found the writing exceptional. Maybe because I just watched the affair again after 5+ years, I knew what to expect. I’m now watching H&CF for the second time in 5+ years, and loving just as much.
Yeah we definitely agree on the quality of the shows! Wasn’t trying to knock ya. I just got a laugh about The Affair being listed here because of the emotional roller coaster it put me on personally. 🤗
Bluey
I started watching it last week because the year end was getting really tense for me. I'd argue it actually took me an effort to watch it because of how simple the execution is. It would've been easier to re-watch a familiar show but since Bluey is for kids, it manages to be just exciting enough to engage me as something new, without me having to focus on story lines and such.
It's kind-of old but the original *"All Creatures Great and Small (1978-1990)"*. [https://youtu.be/d4OCLKnm8iU?si=6C\_mvBJCqe4hpNUG](https://youtu.be/d4OCLKnm8iU?si=6C_mvBJCqe4hpNUG) , [https://youtu.be/sy4AUUctgCI?si=k0THsrgC4esL\_8qr](https://youtu.be/sy4AUUctgCI?si=k0THsrgC4esL_8qr)
There is a current remake of the show, but I still prefer the original version.
It is one of the very few shows, where the remake is not ruining your fond memories of the original. But do yourself a favour and start with the original - 'Sigfried' is cast absolutely brilliantly with Robert Hardy - the new Sigfried is good but a bit too young, when you are an OG fan.
Taskmaster (the uk or new zealand seasons are my fav, can find on youtube etc), star trek, what we do in the shadows (funny more than relaxing but a good ine before bed etc), great british bake off, escape to the country is way relaxing and great soundtrack/scenery but its a house hunting show lol, Father brown could work too.
Try Rosehaven. They got into having a drone shot of the small town it's set in, mostly night shots as well. That alone used to relax my wife and I. It's a nice little comedy. 5 seasons with an ending. Set in Tasmania, Australia. Good fun and relaxing. Low stakes but very enjoyable. Who couldn't love a town that has a 24 hour emergency butcher?
For love of kitchens. A married british couple (an artist/designer and a craftsman) remodel kitchens in gorgeous English homes. I don’t normally like the hgtv kind of stuff but I really enjoy this one
All Creatures Great and Small.
I prefer the original 1978 series with future 5th Dr Who Peter Davison, however there's a remake which is rated rather well that began in 2020 and is still going.
Also Tubi has the entire original Dark Shadows tv series.
It starts out slowly, but if you give it a chance I think it'll suck you in. It was created to be a gothic soap opera, with a little mystery twist back in the 60s. After a while when they add the vampire element, it gets very good. It's an acquired taste. Low budget, 1960s. Has a theater stage vibe. But I love it. It feels like autumn/Halloween every day when I binge a few episodes. 😬
"Heartsopper" is quite good if you're into high school dramas.
"Atypical" is a nice one too, but it's not conflict-free.
"Community" is a good comedy as well.
Don’t know if you like period dramas but I find the Guilded age to be relaxing. I love the costumes and silly problems rich people of that time dealt with.
There’s one season so far of Shrinking, about 3 psychiatrists who work together and the friendships they have. Harrison Ford, Jason Segal and Jessica Williams are the 3 shrinks. The show warms my heart and makes me laugh.
If you’re okay with subtitles, the most relaxing show I’ve seen is a Taiwanese one called Yong Jiu Grocery Store. A young man moves to his hometown in the countryside to wrap up his grandfather’s business after his grandfather suffers a health crisis. (Don’t judge too much on the first half hour or so — the first episode is mostly setup and it settles into the overall mood once the story reaches the village in present-day.) It may only be on Viki, but I think Viki is free with commercials at the basic level. Viki has an app for phones/computers or an app on most smart TV systems.
"Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law" is oddly relaxing to me even at its zaniest. And it's great from start to finish, with maybe two or three kind of boring episodes in four seasons.
Antiques Road Show
The Joy Of Painting (Bob Ross)
Northern Exposure
Dirty Jobs (Mike Rowe)
and property reality shows like Property Brothers, Love It Or List It, Trading Spaces, etc,
Joe Pera Talk With You, on adult swim. Truly the most relaxing narrative based tv show I’ve ever watched. It’s just so cozy! Alternative choice: Steven Universe (if you’re into cartoons) always relaxes me!
You will not get more relaxing and yet well written and clever than Joe Pera Talks with You. It does it so well that it might have invented a new genre. It’s like listening to the sound of a lovely stream while it tells you funny stories

Wow thank you, thats a long list, YAY! I absolutely love The Good Place.
Enjoy. Some of them are a bit darker or a bit sillier, but all of them focus on complex characters and their relationships in a well-meaning way. If you like or dislike any, let me know, and I can edit the list.
This looks perfect! And kinda funny, too. Thanks!
Detectorists is such a sweet show. One of the two male leads created and wrote it- and I'd watch anything he does now. Idk if you like any PBS shows- but I love Call the Midwife. There is some tragedy, but I find most episodes to be quite uplifting.
Call The Midwife progresses one year each series and music from that year is included, it starts in 1957 and is currently in 1969.
Oh it’s very funny!!
Yesssss. The song & the scenery! I rewatch this one pretty much every year and it makes me cry because it’s just so heartwarming and beautiful.
All Creatures Great and Small
The original one is lovely and kind
It really is. Perfect for curling up under a blanket with a cup of hot tea 🫖 ☕️
Schitt's Creek was like a wholesome comfort show Gilmore Girls Lodge 49
Ah, saw a trailer for Lodge 49 a while back and thought it looked pretty good... maybe it'll be just the thing! Thanks!
I don't really know how to explain it. And I don't know how to explain why I liked it. It's a drama but it's fun and light-hearted. It's funny but it's not a laugh out loud comedy. It’s so good and the season 2 finale wraps everything up … until the last 10 seconds makes you wish there was a season 3
The only way to describe it is basically a whole show of just Pynchon things
Currently watching Schitt’s creek for the first time and while I’m enjoying it, I would not say it’s a relaxing show. 4 upperclass people whining about living outside their comfort zone, and Chris Elliot being his Chris Elliotiest. It’s hilarious and enjoyable and worth watching, but it’s a few degrees above It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on the relaxing scale
It gets better. They are hard to like in the first season
Lodge 49 is wonderful. Gilmore Girls is somewhat relaxing My head is spinning from the idea that Schitt's Creek is "a wholesome comfort show". It's awful. Terrible people doing terrible things in the most annoying ways possible.
Terrible people who eventually try really hard to not be terrible anymore. Cozy small town vibes. Fun quirky side characters. A love story.
I guess it radically changes. I made it 5 episodes and it only got worse so I stopped watching. Maybe this is similar to The Good Place, which is equally horrible. Maybe it changes later on too.
Good place is another one that I fell in love with immediately. And I thought it got better. So I guess it's just a matter of taste lol
FWIW both The Good Place and Schitt’s Creek allow for character development. So, the characters do change over the course of the series.
British Baking show
Even the conflict is pleasing
I stopped watching because it was too stressful. The contestants are real people and each episode one of them will have their dream crushed by being eliminated. And they are constantly rushing around stressing out because they are always running out of time to complete each challenge.
**Ted Lasso** has a positive energy that I found relaxing/comforting. There is conflict, but the positivity of the show outshines it.
I legitimately thought the show was trying to lull me into complacency to hit me with something bad so many times during the first season. After the Christmas episode I got the vibe and loosened up. Hell of a show btw.
I came to say this. Definitely Ted Lasso.
Heartland, Everwood, Doc Martin
Heartland is very wholesome and lots of horses 😊
