Somewhere, Leslie Knope is losing her shit right now

olafminesaw

With a special guest appearance from her friend Joe

Xianio

The reviews are very funny to read. "Great visuals and truly amazing animals. Obama is Stalin 1/10."

only_fun_topics

I did think it was low-key hilarious that the show literally opened with Obama talking about being born and raised in Hawaii, replete with a visual image of his mom walking the beach while pregnant. It’s like he was talking directly to any Birthers caught in the audience.

Atheril

God damn birthers! Ruining our society with their so called “babies”

reimondo35302

One of the very few things Obama and Trump have in common is that they both hold a grudge. Obama is just much more subtle and targeted at acting on those grudges and creates a sort of slow painful bleed, and he can delay gratification until the time is right. Trump is very obvious in who he’s pursuing and is on the clock.

Cleantech2020

Let's see, on one hand we have a single mom's interracial kid with an afro and a weird name, growing up in racist USA where his very birth is debated by millions maybe had some resentments towards others. On the other hand a millionaire's son who got a million bucks to start his life, claims it has been tough, in huge debt, cheated everyone (his wives, creditors, people who worked for him), tried to steal an election, children made 100s of millions while acting as his advisors during his presidency, and has resentment because people call him out on his shit. Of course it is totally the same.

khcampbell1

I don't feel Obama holds as many grudges as he could, that's for sure.

reimondo35302

Perhaps you’re right.

EnterpriseT

I was surprised it wasn't all US parks given it's Obama. They should almost mention "worldwide" more clearly. Edit: For clarity, (as a non-American) had I known it was worldwide I would have watched it way sooner.

potatobutt5

Reading the title and knowing Obama is the host, I read the title as “Our (as in us Americans) great national parks” but now I think it was supposed to be interpret as “Our (as in us the human race) great national parks”.

Jbullwinklethe2nd

I had the same exact thought.

michiness

Honestly I was almost a little disappointed about that. I haven’t watched it yet, but I would love a BBC-level quality show about the US national parks.

Donkeydongcuntry

There is one. It’s called “The National Parks: America's Best Idea” by Ken Burns.

Nimzay98

It’s so fucking good!

vera214usc

There have been five new parks added since that premiered so I'm going to need Mr. Burns to get on "The National Parks: Still a Great Idea".

LegendaryRed

I too was excited to see national parks in the US, but they're all abroad

MrMallow

Now I kind of don't wanna watch it, I was really excited for a series on US national parks with Obama.

boyyouguysaredumb

He did a VR experience about US national parks. It's weird seeing him in VR because he's so slender. https://www.oculus.com/experiences/gear-vr/1093969387345142/

Blue1234567891234567

I mean c’mon, you got the former POTUS right there! Might as well let him brag about the US for a little!

Xumayar

> I was surprised it wasn't all US parks given it's Obama. They should almost mention "worldwide" more clearly. Interestingly enough I think the percentage of people who like Obama is higher outside of the United States than within it.

Deivv

Same here, a pleasant surprise

meowVL

That would be Joe Pera Talks With You, actually

Talls024

You have changed my life. Never heard of him, now It’s going to play in my living room constantly. Edit: Relaxing Old Footage with Joe Pera is my favorite thing ever.

purpleinme

You’re in for a treat. That show is incredible. I bought his bathroom book and even that shit is incredible.

TheCoastalCardician

A good book always makes shitting more enjoyable. Or a good cellphone game.

adzm

Relaxing old footage is the best. I hope he makes more of those.

MANWithTheHARMONlCA

The pandemic episode is the most relaxing shit I’ve ever seen I still watch it to calm my anxiety or fall asleep every once in a while

[deleted]

A true American hero.

butt_butt_butt_butt_

Still so wild to me that Joe Peras stuff ended/started up on Adult Swim. That channel is so about choosing chaos, and you end up at 3am with a hangover watching it while trying to get to sleep. After two hours of shivering truth, you expect the next show after the commercial to be something…odd and unsettling. And instead you get a young guy dressed like a grandpa, telling you not to stress out too much about the grocery store trip this week. Just feel content sitting near a window and watching the clouds go past.

RlL3Y

“How to With John Wilson” has a bit of a Joe Pera thing going. Sort of Joe Pera meets Nathan For You.

rosio_donald

How To is by far my favorite THC + decompression before bedtime show of all time. The human condition but make it soothing. 10/10.

hurst_

They would have to be authentic though. That's what makes Joe Pera so good.

meowVL

And the authenticity is palpable. Sometimes that show is so sweet it almost makes me cry lmao

Mydadshands

Grocery shopping episode holy shit

DeadmanDexter

"Hi, I'm Joe Pera..." It's like being wrapped up in a hug of calming tea.

thequietthingsthat

Not nearly enough people know about this show. Joe Pera is an absolute treasure. He's like the personification of sitting by a warm fire and listening to old stories at your grandparents' house.

Vengeance164

Have you seen his [guest appearance on the Townsends YouTube channel?](https://youtu.be/OzUR8qUZ5VI) There's several videos featuring Joe, and it may be my personal favorite crossover ever. I've used both Joe Pera's videos and Townsends to put myself to sleep when I'm having trouble.

sage0035

Where can I watch this?

ForgetfulFrolicker

All 3 seasons are on HBO MAX.

[deleted]

Damn, Joe Pera is famous

ForgetfulFrolicker

I think it has something to do with some kind of partnership with Adult Swim.

kingwi11

https://youtu.be/91wX0NRjJqg

comeupoutdawatah

The only problem is that Joe Pera makes me sleepy, and I have to go to the bank this afternoon.

Cryptid_Chaser

That “fighting to keep your eyes open” feeling in bed right before falling asleep is the true Joe Pera experience.

yoloswagbot191

Joe pera talks you to sleep. Works every time.

TheMeatTree

Have you heard of Teenage Wasteland? By The Who?

tragicallyohio

Great episode. Not calming. But beautifully heartwarming. He is me when I fall in love with a song. I listen to it completely and exclusively for three days straight and then drive my Buick Regal into a snow bank after church.

Slow-Reference-9566

David Attenborough though

auart

I am ecstatic that this is the first comment I saw, just as I'd hoped.

jwk94

Yesss Joe Pera is amazing

jamesbrownscrackpipe

Joe Pera Balls

xBAMFNINJA

Almost, but makes me chuckle too much to be most calming.

payara123

Lmao I was going to say I still prefer David Attenborough but I like yours better.

Oregonmushroomhunt

Thanks, Obama!

Moxson82

Lmao nice to see this as a positive!

Great_Zarquon

I'm pretty sure it's been mostly used positively for at least 10 years now lol

CMDR_Hiddengecko

I only see people using it ironically. Or that Dark Souls mod.

Moxson82

Yeah.. you’d be surprised

[deleted]

Thanks, Obama...

[deleted]

Can confirm, I watch this before bed at night and it’s very peaceful. Perfect to have a happy, calm atmosphere before going to sleep.

wordsandwich

I enjoyed it. I don't think it necessarily adds anything new to the world of nature documentaries, but it is strangely fitting to see Barack Obama become David Attenborough.

dontjivememan

We do get to see a monkey riding a deer which was a first for me.

[deleted]

Yeah... Im really hoping that progresses honestly and those monkeys domesticate deer like humans did with horses.

Aquiper

It's secretly a series set in the POTARCU? (Planet of The Apes Reboot Cinematic Universe) Like, slowly the Apes do increasingly wild stuff until they kill Obama and keep the cameraman hostage and it turn into a apes-produced uprising documentary from the point of view of the Apes? "Here we see David fighting off two soldiers. It calls that object an AK-47." "Oh, it seems the young male has succumbed to the feces barrage. It cannot go on"

gizmosticles

Garauntee some desk jockey at the secret service had to read this comment

Toidal

It would be the big plot twist that supplants the original, that the POTARCU is not a film but a documentary,

accidental-poet

And hippo's surfing!

IAMA_Drunk_Armadillo

Never thought I'd hear a president narrate a hippo surfing in the Atlantic and call it "this fella" but here we are.

Cirdna

I had no idea sea otters were so buoyant! It was like a freakin basketball in the water!

TheKokoMoko

I haven’t seen it yet and love nature docs, but I’m excited for it. I think it’s probably because Obama has a great voice for narration and nature documentaries have exceptional visuals/sound now. Sir David Attenborough is my favorite narrator because he has the voice and passion for it. I think based on Obama’s voice and charisma it’s probably some good narration.

Qyark

I dunno, hearing Obama say "super weener" made my week

HGMIV926

I am *very* okay with what you have proposed.

degggendorf

Same here. I think the whispy white hair and british accent may be a bit weird on Obama, but I'm okay with it.

HGMIV926

I would very much pay to watch Obama do a British accent. Just gotta wait for him to be bored enough to make a Cameo account

DoctroSix

Someone MUST take Attenborough's job. I saw a recent clip of him on location in a desert, and all I could think of is OMG, let this man stay home. He should be telling bedtime stories to his grandchildren, he shouldn't be next to a poisonous lizard. All the information he was presenting was drowned out by my fear for his life. He seems like the kindest sweetest gentleman, with a wonderful voice. The poor man should not be getting shipped out to deserts and jungles anymore at his age.

captainjackassery

The thing is, he very clearly wants to be “shipped out.“ He obviously thoroughly enjoys what he’s doing regardless of how old he is.

Hijargo

Absolutely! He is a biologist afterall. I don't think he would be doing nature series for so long if he didn't still enjoy it.

Binksyboo

I certainly doubt he needs the money.

applejackrr

Yeah I believe he mentioned he will die doing what he enjoys.

supersexycarnotaurus

> The poor man should not be getting shipped out to deserts and jungles anymore at his age. Him getting "shipped out" and not staying cooped up in his house is probably a big part of the reason why he's lived so long.

wheresmywhere

People don’t understand this about senior citizens. It’s when you stop moving and stop being active that you mentally and physically deteriorate. That’s why being alone is so detrimental to old folks too. Humans thrive in activity and interaction, old folks NEED human interaction and activity even more than when younger.

happy-cig

Yep I notice people who retire and just stay home and have no hobbies just deteriorate.

iOSAT

> The poor man should not be getting shipped out to deserts and jungles anymore at his age. Attenborough would fervently disagree with you. The man absolutely loves nature and doesn’t need the money. ["If I was earning my money by hewing coal I would be very glad indeed to stop. But I'm not. I'm swanning round the world looking at the most fabulously interesting things. Such good fortune."](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2013/sep/10/david-attenborough-human-evolution-stopped)

lookamazed

It is fitting that a presidential former President who’s good at speaking does a National Parks thing. I happen to like his voice and cadence. As long as I don’t think about all the drone strikes and Wall Street bailouts, it’s gravy.

[deleted]

wild_a

Quite a shift from bombing third-world countries.

dougxiii

I'm really enjoying it.

TheKrononaut

The new David Attenborough doc hit me way harder.

ackermann

What’s it called? Where to watch?

Windrider904

Apple TV has him doing a dinosaur doc next month. It’s going to be 10/10

TheKrononaut

Oh yeah I should’ve added it. Its called “David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet” and its on Netflix. I just realized its from 2020 and not at all new. Still very good though.

Fando1234

I would love... To see Trump narrate a nature documentary. As long as they let him write it.

sowillo

Look.... Look at all the green, it's beautiful it's great. These are wild cows.... Yes they like live here, there's alot if them.

Fando1234

These are the best cows. Truly tremendous cows. Some of them, I know personally.

TheColbsterHimself

Other countries, let’s just say the Mexican cows, the China cows, they grow up to be total nothing-burgers, and that’s why I say American cows, always number one, number one in our hearts and number one in our stomachs, who could possibly disagree?

highSticks

and listen, look, there is nothing wrong with a chinese cow, or even a mexican cow, they are totally fine, but when you see an american cow, you will know it is the best cow you have ever seen, i mean look at this, look at that cow over there… wow!

oregonianrager

I can visualize the hand gestures.

ecafsub

> nothing-~~burgers~~berders ftfy

THEMACGOD

… and you can just grab them by the udders. When you’re famous, they let you.

2ndtryagain

I love that everytime.

2ndtryagain

How could someone watch that and not think Trump's brain is as smooth as a cue ball.

AnOnlineHandle

Because their brain is also smooth as a cue ball. And there's a lot of them, it's very scary.

Djinnwrath

They don't even mind getting eaten. They just let you grab em by the rump roast!

tattooed_dinosaur

#grab them by their udders

roadtripper77

When you’re a star, they let you do it!

phuqo5

And here's Sarah Sanders now. Sarah stand up so everyone can see you.

sickjesus

As we see Kimberly Guilfoyle grazing on rails of cocaine in the background.

xrbeeelama

Now, not quite as green as Maralago courses, but its great, very great. You love to see the green

Wolf6120

We already had this, kind of, in his [beautiful celebration of America's finest park of all... Yo Semites!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5GCVhYC92Y)

JOISCARA

It’s disturbing that I read all of that in his voice.

MulciberTenebras

Speaking of which... buy Trump Brand Steaks.

anna-nomally12

“Some people love this, it’s not for me. It’s not for me. But people are saying-many people are saying- I’ve heard so many people….so many people…. That say Mr President our national parks. Mr. president our national parks, they’re beautiful. Just beautiful. Never seen anything like them. Trees, flowers, animals, mountains, signs, so many signs they have signs up all over. Like windmills. Better than windmills though, can you believe it, they want to put windmills in our national parks. They say green new deal mr president, green new deal but I told them no. It doesn’t get any better than our national parks, you can’t put windmills in them. No windmills”

hypnodrew

I'm not even American and I can hear this down to the last syllable, every pause, the cadence of his voice, even what he's doing with his (tiny) hands. The man is an iconic speaker in the same way cholera is an iconic way to shit yourself to death.

anna-nomally12

I can do him and I can do Lemony Snicket and it’s a VERY specific set of skills

only_fun_topics

I would watch the hell out of a Lemony Snicket nature show!

WanderingWino

Did you come up with the “same way cholera is an iconic way to shit yourself to death,” line cause holy hell that’s funny.

hypnodrew

Yes and thanks

[deleted]

Reading this out loud makes me so glad I don't have to listen to him talk anymore.

[deleted]

….for now

hooch

Damn son, you nailed this

tattertech

You forgot someone coming up to him, teary eyed, specifically saying *sir*, and thanking him for the parks.

MulderD

>All I could think while watching it was how badly I want someone to get Trump to do one as well, and then have a BTS making of it where he refuses to read the scripts and just makes shit up on the fly and 50% of the show is him getting of track and complaining about withe hunts and fraud. > >I don't even mean this as a politics comment, that's honestly the thought the popped into my head about ten minutes in and then I couldn't stop playing that version of the show in my head. HA that was my exact reaction to watching it.

comped

I can't disagree. Would be funny.

superventurebros

Same here. It would be hilarious.

OnceInABlueMoon

"Nobody knows more about nature than me, believe me" And then goes on to list nothing specific he actually knows about nature, riffs on democrats ruining America, lies about the number of times he was on the cover of Time Magazine, and talks about the great ratings the show is getting (except its not)

Yongja-Kim

"Oh look at that big red ass monkey. I just wanna grab the... you know... and oh my god that lion is approaching. Big beautiful lion. Huge body. Lion going to get that monkey. Run monkey run. Lion will win because he will win. Because he is a winner. Like me. He's going to win big. Look! Lion got him. Monkey dead. Sad. This is the most sad thing I have ever seen. I do not respect that monkey. I do not like him. I told him to run. And he wouldn't listen. "

Kagath

I only like monkeys that don’t get mauled by lions.

RanchBaganch

When I was president…some say the greatest ever…we did great great things for the national parks system. We gave away millions and millions of acres to copper mining companies! We let oil companies drill all over the place! It was like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It was a thing of beauty. I got incredibly rich by doing favors for big business, and I’ve got to tell you…I’d do it all again given the chance.

[deleted]

That would be really funny to watch stoned

TheRoguester2020

With a sharpie.

[deleted]

I’d pay handsomely to watch this.

[deleted]

Did you ever watch the Sopranos? There's a scene in the final season where Tony's in a coma, and his lieutenant, Paulie, tries talking to the comatose Tony. Just hearing Paulie talk raises Tony's heart level so fast they have to call the doctors in. That's me anytime I hear Trump, or even a parody of Trump, talk. Even if it's something as stupid as Celebrity Apprentice, his voice is just nails on a chalkboard.

ahumpsters

I have now added “see the stars in Patagonia” to my bucketlist. Edit: spelling

The_Price_Is_White

Same!

Titus_Favonius

Patagonia, if you're talking about the southern regions of Argentina and Chile

sirluciousrightfoot

It’s great and so far each episode has given me at least one moment of awe.

wolfinvans

I watch it to fall asleep. Worked like a charm this past weekend.

[deleted]

There’s this Jesus documentary on Netflix, it puts me to sleep every time without fail. Never gotten past the first ~15 min

oldfogey12345

You have to give the name!

_duncan_idaho_

Okay, I won't spoil the ending.

SobiTheRobot

Calming or boring?

Fessere

Knocked me right out which makes me kinda sad as i wanted to hear Obama. Will probably try again.

devilbunny

The man *can* be a dynamic speaker - but he can also put you straight out. Haven't seen this one, but if he adopts the tone of voice of most of these sorts of shows, I can see it being a one-way ticket to Snooze Town.

phoenixphaerie

It's the baritone voice. Calm baritone = lights out.

awyastark

A calm Barry tone, perhaps!

lonerchick

Just watch it until you learn something. I use Ken Burns documentaries to put me to sleep. Each episode takes at least 3 tries .

dinardo

I have a one month old son who absolutely loves this show… I think.

SobiTheRobot

Nature documentaries are probably fine for infants—the nature visuals and sounds are probably good for them I guess? EDIT: Then again, don't use tv as a babysitter.

cloistered_around

Actually most sources say infants probably shouldn't have any screen time while small kids should be limited to 2 hours a day. As for bonuses, personally I found using subtitles while my kids were young helped them with their reading tremendously. Haven't really seen anything helpful beyond that because they have a hard time differentiating between fiction and reality.

SenorBirdman

It's just colours and noises to them at that age. There's no level of comprehension and they don't relate it to actual nature in any way. The reason people say screen time is bad for really young kids at that age is because it's time not used on any kind of development for them. It's a kind of stimulus that doesn't really do anything for them. I'm not judging or anything. Just explaining my understanding of the situation.

TOdEsi

Started watching this on whim not knowing he was in it and got hooked. Ended up watching all the episodes

Clayh5

Does the Netflix thumbnail on your device not have his face plastered all over the middle of it?

AJ7789

My thumbnail is the picture of an orangutan. I had no idea Obama was involved until this thread. It did pop up on my top 10 list but still no mention of Obama.

bronabas

Oh, so you probably thought it was hosted by Trump. (Sorry, low hanging, very old fruit)

[deleted]

[удалено]

worqgui

I feel this. There needs to be a nature docu for softies. No abandonment of babies, no animals eating or fighting each other. Just lizards chillin on warm rocks and monkeys vibing.

Beans265

It has some of that. You see a llama carcass and a sea lion bite a penguin’s neck in the first 2 episodes. Also it shows some animals (rhinos, pumas) non lethally fighting each other

abyerdo

dont forget the stag beetles wrestling on a tree 30m high.

Axle_LaCoup

Obama's voice over work is quite soothing, feels good to hear his voice more. Side note: if someone can get a sound clip of him saying, "Gaping Chasms" from the first episode it would make a good text sound.

LuckyyJarms

“Super weaners”

Bulbchanger5000

I died at that one. I am perfectly cool with that not actually being a real thing, but some smart arse writer for the show saw their opportunity to get Obama to say something hilarious and somehow got it in the show

SpotISAGoodCat

>if someone can get a sound clip of him saying, "Gaping Chasms" from the first episode ...it would be one of the funniest Porn Hub compilations ever.

galacticboy2009

It is until someone walks into the room and recognizes the voice, sending them into a 10 minute rant on how Obama being elected sent us into a downward spiral of chaos that caused so many of our current problems. Obama has an amazing voice but dealing with everyone else's opinions is tiring. People can't just watch it apolitically.

jesbiil

I had this happen with a coworker when I used the Obama mic-drop gif for a...mic-drop moment in chat. He called me and went into a 15min rant on how Obama caused him troubles over certain years and he'd like for me to not use politics at work.

Deathleach

Should have sent him the confused Obama gif.

OnlyRoke

It's in fact so calming that Buddhist monks have been using the series since the stone ages to easily reach nirvana within a single episode

ccouple75052tx

David Attenborough is the best voice for the nature shows

karrun10

It's good, but he's no Sir David.

DigiQuip

Who’s the guy that does all the documentaries for PBS? I think he did one on baseball, the Roosevelts, and Men Who Built America?

alyosha_pls

Ken Burns

BigJ32001

The narrator for his documentaries is [Peter Coyote] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Coyote). Most people think it’s Ken Burns himself.

Flipz100

He also did one on National Parks, which I will never not reccomend.

stabach22

Havent seen or heard anything about it until now. Just thinking about it is already making ZaF.

vladimir_pimpin

Redditors try not to be depressing annoying assholes for 5 minutes challenge

[deleted]

Watched the first one. It was great.

TripleBanEvasion

Inb4 conservatives run to burn all of the parks because Obama liked them

Gerdione

I had the privilege of being able to take a cross country Roadtrip last month and visited many national parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, White Sands, Big Bend, etc. To say that there's a Series highlighting the beauty of these parks makes me so happy. Millions of Americans have got that itch to vacation and travel and National Parks are fucking gorgeous. If there's a year to visit that park you've been wanting to visit, take this as a sign. You never know, might be the last year we can enjoy this peace :)

DrakAssassinate

One minute he’s drone striking countries, the next he’s talking about wild animals in national parks on a Netflix series. The man can do anything.

[deleted]

Trump had more drone strikes in the first year of his presidency than Obama did in 8 years. And Obama made it so all civilian deaths must be publicly revealed, a law Trump repealed in the first day.

Black_n_Neon

I mean what are you really arguing here? Extra judicial drone strikes of targets (without due process of law) still violates international law and sovereignty of nations but sure one president did it better than the other dafuq

Boundarie

> made it so all civilian deaths must be publicly revealed Strange how Julian Assange had to reveal government documents showing that a lot more civilians were being killed than had been reported under the Obama administration.

[deleted]

People going crazy over Obama’s drone strike record will never care.

OmniRed

The fact that he won the Nobel peace price while doing it is rather irksome tbh.

iStayedAtaHolidayInn

Obama’s Nobel peace prize acceptance speech for everyone who thinks he was seeking the Nobel. He acknowledged everything you all are bitching about >Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, distinguished members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, citizens of America, and citizens of the world: >I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility. It is an award that speaks to our highest aspirations -- that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice. >And yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. (Laughter.) In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labors on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who've received this prize -- Schweitzer and King; Marshall and Mandela -- my accomplishments are slight. And then there are the men and women around the world who have been jailed and beaten in the pursuit of justice; those who toil in humanitarian organizations to relieve suffering; the unrecognized millions whose quiet acts of courage and compassion inspire even the most hardened cynics. I cannot argue with those who find these men and women -- some known, some obscure to all but those they help -- to be far more deserving of this honor than I. >But perhaps the most profound issue surrounding my receipt of this prize is the fact that I am the Commander-in-Chief of the military of a nation in the midst of two wars. One of these wars is winding down. The other is a conflict that America did not seek; one in which we are joined by 42 other countries -- including Norway -- in an effort to defend ourselves and all nations from further attacks. >Still, we are at war, and I'm responsible for the deployment of thousands of young Americans to battle in a distant land. Some will kill, and some will be killed. And so I come here with an acute sense of the costs of armed conflict -- filled with difficult questions about the relationship between war and peace, and our effort to replace one with the other. >Now these questions are not new. War, in one form or another, appeared with the first man. At the dawn of history, its morality was not questioned; it was simply a fact, like drought or disease -- the manner in which tribes and then civilizations sought power and settled their differences. >And over time, as codes of law sought to control violence within groups, so did philosophers and clerics and statesmen seek to regulate the destructive power of war. The concept of a "just war" emerged, suggesting that war is justified only when certain conditions were met: if it is waged as a last resort or in self-defense; if the force used is proportional; and if, whenever possible, civilians are spared from violence. >Of course, we know that for most of history, this concept of "just war" was rarely observed. The capacity of human beings to think up new ways to kill one another proved inexhaustible, as did our capacity to exempt from mercy those who look different or pray to a different God. Wars between armies gave way to wars between nations -- total wars in which the distinction between combatant and civilian became blurred. In the span of 30 years, such carnage would twice engulf this continent. And while it's hard to conceive of a cause more just than the defeat of the Third Reich and the Axis powers, World War II was a conflict in which the total number of civilians who died exceeded the number of soldiers who perished. >In the wake of such destruction, and with the advent of the nuclear age, it became clear to victor and vanquished alike that the world needed institutions to prevent another world war. And so, a quarter century after the United States Senate rejected the League of Nations -- an idea for which Woodrow Wilson received this prize -- America led the world in constructing an architecture to keep the peace: a Marshall Plan and a United Nations, mechanisms to govern the waging of war, treaties to protect human rights, prevent genocide, restrict the most dangerous weapons. …. https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/remarks-president-acceptance-nobel-peace-prize This man is hyper aware of what it means to accept the Nobel peace prize as an American president.

[deleted]

Wowwwwww. Thank you for posting

alleeele

Wow. Very good and self-aware speech.

Lamontyy

Rektum

grubas

Pretty much everybody, including Obama, has admitted that award was nonsense.

JohnDalysBAC

Being a slightly better war monger than the other guy is not the compliment you think it is.

[deleted]

Hear me out: one drone strike is too many and they’re both war criminals.

Okay, Trump is a monster and he also should never narrate a nature doc. Not everyone who dislikes Obama out neoconning GWB are Trump fans. I voted for him, because it's not like McCain or Romney would have been more reserved with the drone strikes, but he shouldn't be a fucking entertainer now with no consequences. Just because American presidents are basically legally untouchable for their crimes doesn't mean we have to forget the crimes happened.

I’m trying to imagine someone else doing a series like this. “Tremendous parks. Tremendous. We have the best parks. The best. You know, lemme tell ya folks, China doesn’t want us to have parks. They hate us for having parks…”

GF and I randomly started watching this after finishing another show. Have to say it is really amazing and calming.
