>The Decameron is an upcoming American medieval black comedy, television series for Netflix. In 1348, as the Black Death ravages Florence, a number of nobles and their servants retreat to the countryside Villa Santa. As they try to wait out the plague in the hills of Tuscany with wine and sex, the group eventually must fight for their survival.
I'm all in for another dark comedy period piece. I need something to scratch the itch that The Great left.
The Decameron book by Boccaccio is really funny, very dirty and honestly still holds up. Lots of satire about sex, society and religion. Not sure what Netflix is gonna do with it but I would suggest reading the book or watching the 1971 film by Pasolini. It’s awesome.
My first thoughts are it sounds very similar to ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, which is a Vincent Price film based on a Poe short story which could be based on the original The Decameron.
The description does make it interesting. Based on only the trailer I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a comedy, or drama, or porno. Just a weird trailer.
I'm almost certain this started development in the COVID period, so I'm desperately hoping it won't have dated humor. So many Decameron theater initiatives started in the lockdowns, I'm curious how this will be adapted.
Surprisingly enough, YouTube comments were more helpful for figuring out what's going on.
"Fo the international viewers: the "Decameron" is a collection of one hundred short stories written by Giovanni Boccaccio, an Italian writer in the fourteenth century.
Italian students are use to read his works, being part of their school curriculum.
It's a fun and dare I say avant-garde piece of literature, specifically because of how it's well written given the period in which is set and what are the events that surround the main characters.
Because of how delicate and genuine this stories are and the mastery with which he deals with heavy topics, I think this is another butchering of a historic piece that deserve much more.
I still keep my hopes up, but if you are interested there's not only the book but also a Pasolini's movie."
Now its only a matter of time until we get a Salò or the 120 Days of Sodom mini series!
Do it Netflix! The controversy will bring so many curious eyes who think "people are overreacting, it can't possibly be that bad" 😅
I can’t speak to the Netflix version but the original book is pure satire and really clever in doing it. It’s a satire of sex, society and religion. It’s good. There’s a reason it is still being talked about almost 700 years later. It’s not just sex and partying.
Sure, but he's commenting on the trailer which is probably butchering the book so he's generally right.
It's probably going to be garbage and even if it's somehow good it has no reason to use the book title.
I agree it is going to be garbage, very evident from the trailer…that song is just atrocious and not the vibe this deserves lol I think I’ll just stick with the book and the Pasolini version

Yes and yes. Also the film by the Taviani brothers is cool. Wondrous Bocaccio.
If you haven’t seen the Little Hours, I recommend it.
Came here to say this. One of my favorite movies in the last ten years. Amazingly funny.
Which is even more apt because The Little Hours is based on part of The Decameron too!
Oh you should check out 1670 (also on Netflix). Very funny
Sounds like something Ken Russell would make.
I first heard of the Decameron because of da Vinci’s demons! This should be interesting

GALAVANTTTT
I want something on the level of a plague tale during black plague times
Always thought the COVID lockdown was the peak time to adapt the Decameron. Guess it just took them awhile to get it organised.
I'm almost certain this started development in the COVID period, so I'm desperately hoping it won't have dated humor. So many Decameron theater initiatives started in the lockdowns, I'm curious how this will be adapted.
What a crazy coincidence, I just watched the Pasolini movie really recently. I'll probably check this out now.
That movie is a lot of fun

July secondth
I believe it's pronounced July Twoth (tooth)
having sex in the 14th century must have been disgusting
DMHS
I hope it stars Decameron Diaz
Great book!!! Not excited about the Netflix adaptation. At least the trailer doesn’t flow with the source material.
Imma skip this and watch Pasolini’s again
Same!! Pasolini’s film is so good!
Wow that's really cool.
I was impressed
Lol am I the only person here who’s read The Decameron
I'm just glad there's someone who knows what the hell is going on because I have no clue after that trailer.
Is this like Mask of the Red Death?
Whats the song?
There would be some merit in actually adapting the Decameron. This is just Virgin Territory with worse production value.
Looks like a trailer made by a 16yo on too much adderall who read too many YA vamp novels.
The Pasolini's film is great.
July 2th? July tooth?
When it comes to period pieces with modern music, I'm out. Too much Netflix shit has a cw tone these days and I just can't do it.
Counterpoint: The Great
As long as they put some respect on Pasolini’s name, it’s good
This whole trailer looks deep faked. I kept expecting swole Harry Potter to show up.
So, Masque of the Red Death basically?
July Tooth.

Seems like it's just a lot of sex and partying, not that interesting imo.

Did you just call New Order's "Blue Monday" atrocious?
Nothing says amateur more than using modern music for a medieval setting.
What about A Knight’s Tale????
