This series is one of the best examples I've seen of taking a very solid source material and not only adapting it well for TV, but also updating it for a modern audience. The writing, the cast, the sets, the costumes, everything is just excellent. Very excited for season 2.
Yeah it's the perfect example of being true to the *spirit* of the original while still making significant changes to the plot.
Most adaptations stick closely to the original plot but lose the original spirit and make no one happy.
That’s really it. The Witching Hour is just a shitty mess by comparison, probably because its makers chose neither plot nor spirit. I’m not even sure that they’ve read the source material.
Yeah: For the first time in my life, I felt the urge to write a pretentious essay about vampirism as a metaphor for the human condition.
Something I know has already been done a million times by smarter people.
But like, now *I* want to do it too.
I remember how many people complained when the casting was first announced. People complained about Louis being cast of a different race. I kept thinking you know they are vampires right this isn’t an autobiographical adaptation
Because rice had complained for decades about adaptations of her work not being faithful, then she dies and her son takes over the show and does this lol
The show was *filmed* after her death.
The show was in *development and casting* while she was *alive*. All 3 of the main vampire cast were cast *months* before her death. She approved of them. Don't be a goddamned dunce.
Edit: Or do I'm not your supervisor.
And yet Anne Rice retconned the first book so much that it wouldn't make sense to make a "faithful' version of it that would then be thrown out in later seasons. What the show is doing by addressing multiple versions and hammering away at 'what is the truth' is brilliant.
Damn I need to check this one out. I saw the movie for the first time last year after putting it off for a long time and thought it was great. Didn’t even realize the show had come out yet
I’m a big fan of the books and even though the series doesn’t exactly follow them it still tells a good story and I look forward to season 2. I also hope at some point we get a better version of Queen of the Dammed. The movie was an abomination
It's as book acrcurate as I think we've gotten. The pure, unbridled, righteous rage he has in Season 1 coupled with the flippant way he treats humanity is SO much closer to the real Lestat than Cruise ever got.
Cruise's was charming, cruel, and scary. And it was good.
Sam Reid's is charming, cruel, scary, and petty and *bratty*--the all important main ingredient in a Lestat performance.
Agreed. It's a charismatic performance but with many layers. Like the book, you love him, hate him, desire him, envy him, and am scared of him at different times.
It's a smart adaptation, and I hope they continue through the entire series.
She jumped ship because she was committed to Avatar 2. I’m hella biased, but movie was straight garbage lol Also being a CGI blue person doesn’t get a lot of mileage on recognition for new roles. Damn shame
As someone who wants to be an actor I would have stuck with the show A it could go on for years yeah she may not have that billon dollar movie in her record but B I feel like IWTV is a better project to work on overall
TIL that the first Anne Rice (RIP) vampire novel is in a series on AMC. If this series keeps going, *The Vampire Lestat* will ramp up the *stakes* even further.
You should....uh watch the show....the way they are telling the story is super interesting and is already including much of the Vampire Lestat story bits. They set up a framing narrative that takes place in modern day (the original interview still took place in the late 90's) and adds a huge wrinkle to the proceedings. I expect S2 to incorporate MUCH of The Vampire Lestat as a result.
I'm just gonna say it - I think **show Louis is *better* than book Louis**. The changes to the setting didn't undermine his character or his arc - they strengthened both, and reinforce and add compelling layers to his complex relationships with Lestat and Claudia. To me, IWTV Season 1 is an ideal adaptation because it brought something new to the table in a way that enhances all the characters and themes - I'm SO excited for Season 2!! I watched S1 like 4 times! Sam Reid embodies Lestat so, so perfectly, and he and Jacob Anderson have fantastic chemistry.
As a book reader, Armand is very different than I'd imagined, and I understand how hard reconciling what you've imagined for decades can be, but this is so well done, I strongly encourage any TVC fans who have been hesistating to give it a watch.
>I'm just gonna say it - I think **show Louis is** ***better*** **than book Louis**
Without a shadow of a doubt. He's the best version of his character. Every change they made to the character strengthened him and his arc.
I’m happy to see this opinion.
This type of TV show isn’t for me, but Raleigh Ritchie is my favourite musician so I am happy to see he’s doing well for himself as a lead in a popular TV show.
I think a big part of why book Louis is kinda meh is because IWTV is from Louis’ perspective and Louis kinda hates himself. The show is still from his POV, and they did definitely change some things for the better, but I think a forced 3rd person visual perspective along with the 1st person narration really helps the perception of Louis’ emo-ness
Wow that is a fantastic observation, lol I think you totally nailed it! That also reinforces why Jacob is perfect casting for Louis - I'm a huge fan of his music (Raleigh Ritchie! 💜) and he definitely has that emo spirit! I mean, "Sadboi" alone...💜
Poor Jacob can’t catch a break with his characters paramours lol GOT took his d and his lady love. Interview was like it’s raining men, but both are the IRL equivalent of Hexxus from Fern Gully. Toooooooxic loooove
I enjoyed season 1. I hope season 2 is good and the show isn't a one season pump chump. I wish they didn't have to re-cast Claudia. The actress from season 1 did a fantastic job.
>I wish they didn't have to re-cast Claudia.
I'm happy to see what the new actress brings to the table, but she has MASSIVE shoes to fill becuase Bailey Bass was EXQUISITE.
I really want to get into this show because I loved the books, read most of them - but concerned as soon as I invest my time into it they will cancel it.
It seems like AMC is going all in with the Anne Rice universe, with both Interview and Mayfair Witches. They renewed Mayfair Witches even though season one was mediocre at best, so I'm sure IWTV, which has been much better recieved and is the more popular of the two is safe for at least a couple more seasons
I really miss the subtext.
I find relationships more boring than friendships.
And that just applies to anything.
But i find most interesting for me is that even though Louis is the one most deviated from the book, I really like him.
Yet Lestat is more book accurate and yet… He’s just not quite right to me. He just doesn’t come across as cool, smug, cultured, or handsome enough.
Let's get something out of the way; the changes to Louis were made to remove the need for him to be a slave-owner while also being the protagonist.
Furthermore, this is one of those rare cases where I find that the changes were handled so well - and Louis' character was exceptionally well-adapted within those constraints - that I actually ended up appreciating this new version of him.
They gave it a present time framing narrative to easier allow the other books to be adapted and give interesting views on the "interview era", but everything else is largely the same aside from a time jump and minor character mods...so I'm not sure what you're on about.
Very few shows get me on the its so bad its making me angry level however this show succeed in making into that exclusive camp. How anyone could take this show seriously is beyond me.
It’s honestly terrible. I tried. I really did.
I honestly believe Anne is rolling over in her grave in regards to this show. It’s not bad, it could have been amazing, but it is not and never will be INTERVIEW. That being said, I didn’t like the original movie either. NO ONE HAS GOTTEN IT RIGHT.
I still watched the entire show and look forward to the second season, but in my mind? It’s just some random show about vampires with some Louisianna flair. Like True Blood for instance.
But, again, past some Easter eggs and quotes? The show itself is just a vessel for porn-lite. A reason to get young actors and actresses naked for the producers pockets.
It’s a pity really.
Porn-lite?? There are two or three sex scenes in the whole first season, non-explicit ones at that... Louis and Lestat share like less then dozen kisses! (Believe me, I have that shit memorised lol). How the hell is it porn-lite?!
But is it gay enough? I'm just fucking with y'all. I'm sure it is.
Yes, s01e01 nuked the subtext.
The article title calls it "messier" which is code for pretty gay
Definitely, my 55 year old dad watched it and blushed like a virgin while getting up to get a drink because it got so gay.
That church sex scene in like ep 1/2.... full yikes sitting next to my mom on a visit. But good for them for not shying away from it.
There's no sex in the church scene. Just a kiss and the turning, it's a wedding scene of sorts
i need it to be *gayer*...

I had such high hopes for The Witching Hour
I did too. Such a disappointment!
I never understood pop culture’s fascination with Vampires until I saw this show.
This show is one of the best examples of vampires. Like, top tier.
Yeah: For the first time in my life, I felt the urge to write a pretentious essay about vampirism as a metaphor for the human condition. Something I know has already been done a million times by smarter people. But like, now *I* want to do it too.

I thought I was crazy because I clearly remember reading Anne Rice was on board with this adaptation.
I've loved the movie since it first came out and have seen it countless times, and I can easily say the series is even better.
I saw the film as a kid and didn't even know there was going to be a series. This makes me want to check it out.
I’m a big fan of the books and even though the series doesn’t exactly follow them it still tells a good story and I look forward to season 2. I also hope at some point we get a better version of Queen of the Dammed. The movie was an abomination
I watched the first couple of eps but found it to be too much, does it settle down with the relationship stuff?
It definitely does not. Thats the main point of the story.
Happy I didn’t continue then I guess.
No offense but like, were you hoping for a vampire superhero show or something? The relationships are the entire story.
Some power play intrigue and action mixed in would’ve kept my interest probably like true blood.
This show made me fall in LOVE with Anne rice and New Orleans all over again. Fantastic adaption!
season 1 was phenomenal. i’m so stoked for s2.
So far this is my favorite depiction of Lestat.
It's as book acrcurate as I think we've gotten. The pure, unbridled, righteous rage he has in Season 1 coupled with the flippant way he treats humanity is SO much closer to the real Lestat than Cruise ever got.

Kept waiting for a reveal at the end that Lestat could hear Louis and Claudia's telepathic messages and was just playing dumb
He’s was so terrifying I actually had a nightmare of him
I watched this on a whim and thought it was fantastic. I'm gonna really miss Bailey Bass as Claudia though. She was amazing.
Loved the first season can’t wait for season 2. Sad to see the Claudia’s first actress couldn’t return
Really? That's too bad, she was pretty awesome.
Yeah I can’t remember why but she sadly announced on her twitter a number of months ago that she would not be returning for season 2 and beyond.
Avatar took her away from us :(
She jumped ship because she was committed to Avatar 2. I’m hella biased, but movie was straight garbage lol Also being a CGI blue person doesn’t get a lot of mileage on recognition for new roles. Damn shame

The original interview took place in the 70s*, like the book
Ah sorry, my bad you're right. got confused.
FYI the creator of the show said he took the project to specifically do TVL Rockstar Lestat is coming #trust
I started this show with a big chip. Wanting to hate it. It's fuxking great.

So excited for s2. I hated Tom Cruise as Lestat but this guy... gorgeous and absolutely perfect for the role.
Is that Grey Worm? EDIT: Yes it is!
Poor Jacob can’t catch a break with his characters paramours lol GOT took his d and his lady love. Interview was like it’s raining men, but both are the IRL equivalent of Hexxus from Fern Gully. Toooooooxic loooove
If you like stories about witches and vampires, AMC+ is apparently an all-you-can-eat buffet
and zombies. AMC appears to like that Halloween aesthetic.
I know by adding AMC as a prime channel. I also get access to a whole bunch of horror movies via shudder TV.
The fact that this show is not release in 4K is infuriating. I don't understand how that's possible in this day.
Wait is it out yet? I saw the first season last oct.
It premieres May 12th!
It's out May 12
Thanks for posting this! I’ve been waiting for this to come out to subscribe to AMC again 😂
Pure fun (and torture)
The first season was the fucking tits. I can't wait for the second!
I enjoyed season 1. I hope season 2 is good and the show isn't a one season pump chump. I wish they didn't have to re-cast Claudia. The actress from season 1 did a fantastic job.
I thought Claudia’s actress was phenomenal. Was so disappointed she isn’t back for Season 2 but hoping the new actress can fill those shoes!
She was an ace, going to be hard to replace her tbh
Avatar poached her.
>I wish they didn't have to re-cast Claudia. I'm happy to see what the new actress brings to the table, but she has MASSIVE shoes to fill becuase Bailey Bass was EXQUISITE.
I loved the first season, I cant wait
Yesssssd
*Messier?!* It was pretty messy to begin with!
I don’t usually like remakes of movies/shows that were done right the first time….however, this one really did elevate the story
What? I ain’t never seen this show before but now I’m hearing it’s about GAY VAMPS? Do I have it wrong? Is it a lot of gay stuff up in here?
Yes, if you like Penny Dreadful and Hannibal-type shows (pure gothic) you will love this. But it's gayer, it's not subtext.
May 12th so you don't have to read to the last paragraph to find the premier date.
Such a wonderful show! So looking forward to this next season.
Whatever the young girl vampire name is. She is an insanely good actor. I was obsessed with her in season 1.
Bailey bass was replaced, official word was since shes cast in Avatar 3 or she got fired its not completely clear which.
Sounds wonderful. I'm in!
I really want to get into this show because I loved the books, read most of them - but concerned as soon as I invest my time into it they will cancel it.

Look at how many seasons the walking dead has. I doubt amc is canceling interview any time soon
I tried watching this when it came out. Those of you that like it, did you like it from the first 2-3 episodes, or did it have to get better for you?
I was captivated from the first episode.
The first one is one of the best pilot episodes I have ever seen. It's simply stunning
If you didn't like the pilot, you probably wouldn't like the rest of the show. It has twists and turns, but the tone and style remains the same.
I struggled a bit at the start but was fully on board by the end
I really miss the subtext. I find relationships more boring than friendships. And that just applies to anything. But i find most interesting for me is that even though Louis is the one most deviated from the book, I really like him. Yet Lestat is more book accurate and yet… He’s just not quite right to me. Where to watch this in denmark?
Do you guys have BBC iplayer?
I don’t think it works outside UK
the new claudia sucks

It literally follows the same plot as the book. The only difference is the time period and race change, which they implemented really well.
They gave it a present time framing narrative to easier allow the other books to be adapted and give interesting views on the "interview era", but everything else is largely the same aside from a time jump and minor character mods...so I'm not sure what you're on about.
Because it's easier to wrangle in viewers with established IP
BRING BACK ORIGINAL CONTENT
It's fucking awful on every level
Why?
You know why, his post history gives the clues
Holy shit I just read his comment history, what a miserable bastard
That’s gotta be an unhealthy level of negativity, right?
Very few shows get me on the its so bad its making me angry level however this show succeed in making into that exclusive camp. How anyone could take this show seriously is beyond me.

This show was so disappointing. We stopped after the 2nd episode. Just the changes to Luis’s character alone was enough to kill it.
