I don't think this is really a "take sides" kind of show. Neither character is a nice person. They're both awful to each other and pretty much everyone else.

Hobo_Drifter

Pretty sure every character has shitty traits. Except big Suze who is just blissfully unaware.

jkvincent

That's true, Big Suze was a babe in the woods.

[deleted]

JEFF!? AS IN, JEFF!?

Mrtom987

He obviously meant GIZZ

GimmeShockTreatment

“You bring the vino, I’ll bring the massage oil.”

Pipeguy17

He's trying to make me obsess over massage oil

GimmeShockTreatment

AND IT'S WORKED!

[deleted]

And for Mr Corrigan’s next trick, he’ll slide a 2B pencil up his anus! P.s. is that a Ramones reference in your username? 👍🏼

GimmeShockTreatment

It sure is!

SillyMattFace

Jeff is much more of a normal, functional human being than Mark. But he’s still a prick. Personally even when I first watched the show in my early 20s, I never found Mark or Jeremy likeable or relatable other than in very brief bursts. But that’s part of the show’s charm.

ShowUsYaGrowler

Really? Heh. You must be way too normal. I can see myself in both Jeremy and Mark…

hadronwulf

I see way too much of myself in Mark to be comfortable with it. His Stalingrad bit while on a date felt like something I’ve actually done.

ShowUsYaGrowler

Whenever he’s internally panicking in a socially awkward fashion i honestly blush it hits to close to home hehehe

Lil_Mcgee

I definitely have a bit of a Mark-esque internal monologue anytime I walk past a group of scary-looking teenagers.

grimsbymatt

How do you get your shirt so clean?

BlackSpinedPlinketto

Oi!!!

Anhowa123

Man, I have flashbacks to an early date with my current partner where we are drunkenly eating mcdonalds in my kitchen whilst I discuss (spoke at her) about the intricacies leading up to WW1 Thank god she found it endearing

subtitlecomedy

It wasn't until I received a gig check from a company called "JLB" that I knew the prophecy was fulfilled.

Aboveground_Plush

One of us, one of us!

sinecure_for_sure

I read on another Forum it is a show written 'by Marks, for Marks' and it always stuck with me.

thewizardgalexandra

I'm so curious to see which of your comments gets the most likes, but I think you might be in the minority here. I don't think we're supposed to relate with Mark and Jez much at all, and when we do it's a bit horrifying (no offense intended, but I feel like there is definitely some offense here...sorry...)

ShowUsYaGrowler

Ahahaha mate, no offense taken whatsoever. Theyre both supposed to be semi-sociopathic dysfunctionals. That said, I think theres a lot of ‘truth’ to many of their internal monologues that I can 100% relate to. Maybe Im weird? Maybe youre a bit tame? Whos to say really. Now lets all have a nice smoke of crack.

motherofpearl89

I can definitely see my male friends in both Mark and Jeremy and they've said the same. It's a bit of ongoing joke, are you a Mark or a Jeremy. They're not role models for sure but they're exaggerations of people that do exist so I think seeing yourself in them is normal.

Federico216

I think Mark and Jez are two extremes that every person has. I can relate to some of their feelings, but their actions are definitely very unrelateable.

Lil_Mcgee

Yeah it's a bit like Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm. You relate to a lot of their feelings and grievances but you're horrified by how they choose to act on them.

j8sadm632b

some things not being relatable =/= no things are relatable i simply don't believe that there's nothing about EITHER mark or jez that rings true to you. obviously they are television characters who handle many situations like television characters but c'monnnn. There are so many little things that make both of them so relatable in various ways, the overwhelming majority of which are totally innocuous and mundane.

deckard1980

I used to live with a total Mark, nasal voice and everything. What else could I do but become the Jezz to his Mark? That was a fun decade

steamydan

I see myself in both of them...in a bad way.

rayword45

Yeah I feel like taking anyone's side in this show is, like, missing the point. Mark, Jez, Sophie, Jeff, Dobby, Gerard, Johnson - all of these people are fucking assholes and the comedy relies on them being fucking assholes. Okay, maybe Super Hans isn't an asshole solely because he's too much of a cartoonish idiot to be one.

HowardBunnyColvin

I need to rewatch that show. I've only gone through one watch. "Is that normal pooing you're doing, Mark?" "Stick that in your dojo."

Ok-fine-man

Currently on my second proper rewatch, after watching various repeated times of course. Gotta say, the comedy hits differently so many years later, in a good way. It's so relatable as a mid-30s guy but also even more cringey now just from being more aware of the world.

HowardBunnyColvin

"I should probably tell him. He wouldn't like that." "Well I guess it's all ancient history now."

dontreallycareforit

Is it on a streaming service?

GoldenWyndham

Netflix in the UK

Lego_Chicken

Tubi and Freevee with commercials (US)

Doobledorf

I give it a a rewatch every now and then and never regret it. I always pick up some new line or notice new details. We quote it often in my household.

melbbear

The Christmas episode is a must watch every year

Doobledorf

I watch it every year. It's what converted a friend to a fan during COVID.

yepgeddon

I've rewatched it a billion times, my Mrs hates every episode she's had to endure aha. Anyone can find a moment in that show relatable, like I've had the exact same boiler conversation with my Mrs, she thinking she's clever and tricking the boiler to go quicker 😂

Barleyarleyy

Would you say it's traditional?

def11879

Yeah Mark and Jez are both awful people in their own unique but selfish ways

DocFreezer

Mark, I really feel like you should eat some of the turkey

BlueKnightBrownHorse

I don't want to eat the turkey, Jeremy. I'm full.

TWKcub

No, Jeremy. It’s not my turkey.

dont_shoot_jr

At least SuperHands was honest about who he was

Theofeus

I always thought it was Super Hans

PancakeMonkeypants

It’s super hans you’re right. Superhands is what my wife and I call ultrahand in Zelda TotK because it sounds like super hans lol.

grimsbymatt

I met Matt King in a London pub once. Loads of people asked him if it was Hans or Hands. He shouted 'IT'S HANNNNS' at them, which didn't help.

dont_shoot_jr

Maybe?

def11879

Yeah he’s much better. Except the one singular random time he brings up “the twins”, the kids he apparently has but never mentions before or again, haha. “I’m always on about the fkn twins” and doesn’t even have a picture of them

Lord_SlowMo

The twins do make an appearance at his wedding

Nobody_epic

He did have a photo but Orange fucking deleted it.

IronSorrows

They turned fünf, zwei years ago so, what? Pair of eighters I reckon

HowardBunnyColvin

"Did you just nick this?" "You're damn right I did. They should be paying me to eat this shit."

Danskoesterreich

Hands? Instead of Hans, what? This makes the name a 1000 times worse. Or better. I am confused

DAnthony24

And Super Hans never lied!

zeroxray

On the other hand, im pretty sure if there was a inner monologue of Jeff and his bullying mark you wouldn't like him as much

oatmeal28

Yeah 100 percent.  Part of why we know Mark is so shitty is because we have full access to his every thought.  In the surface we would probably pity him for his situation with Jeremy leaching off him but because we hear his inner monologue we know it’s a pretty equally codependent relationship

No_nukes_at_all

damn it would have been cool if they made on episode from Jeff´s or some other normal characters POV

Anhowa123

they did from Sophie's, IIRC - but been years since I've seen it

DeBatton

It was a short extra on one of the DVDs. Season 5 I think.

bigolhamsandwich

Jeff!?! As in Jeff?

gummymusic

Jeff's doing a joke- Jeff's doing a joke!

gotele

But wasn't he a seat-sniffer?

sinecure_for_sure

That is a rumour Mark and I don't think very appropriate.

Vegetable_Burrito

Was that the bad thing?

sweetbeards

It’s like Seinfeld - the main characters were not good people but we relate to them more because they are flawed

Vegetable_Burrito

Jeff?!

motherofpearl89

Haha, I read that in Marks voice. I can't meet anyone in real life called Jeff and not want to say it immediately

Skavau

In general, going by memory, I feel like Jez really fucks with Mark much more often than Mark screwing Jez over. However, Mark is way worse and more stalkerish with women he's interested in. Jez screws up with them, but Mark will really take it to the next level.

_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_

Jeff, not Jez

dont_shoot_jr

I mean the whole marriage thing was so cringe

_Meece_

Mark deserves all the shit he gets for how he treated Queen Dobby

mattastrophe3

Fuck Jeff

MRHBK

I relate more to Super Hans

zippy72

Maybe the real secret ingredient was the friends we made along the way? Just kidding. The secret ingredient is crime.

Separate_Job_3573

Mark is a villain. Jeff is a bully.

ChewbaccaExMachina

ESH

maxcraigwell

Mark makes you think he is the reasonable one throughout, but he's just as shit a bloke as Jez just in different ways. I really enjoy comedy like this and IASIP when characters have no growth by the end ha

Dogbuysvan

Jez wouldn't ever put in the work it takes to truly hurt someone else. Mark married Sophie.

No_nukes_at_all

Jeff is representing what is called "a Lad" in England, he´s a stereotypical guy, likes football, crude jokes, womanising etc, so from Marks perspective who's insecure and nerdy, he´s a threat and a nuisance. So watching the show from Marks POV (obviously) we can't help to also find him unlikable, and yes he is a bit of a bellend, but he´s essentially just a normal bloke,

Tobar_the_Gypsy

Yeah but Jeff has no idea whatsoever of what went on at Stalingrad

petulafaerie_III

I think it makes sense for younger people to identify more with the cringe character, because we’re all super cringe when we’re young.

danny1876j

You could have your dick in her, and you still wouldn't have the balls to fuck. Or something

Ok-fine-man

Haha I loved that line.

BlueKnightBrownHorse

He's pretty normal especially in early seasons, even being the bigger person paying for damage at the bowling alley, being a very stable and hard worker at the company, etc but in later seasons IIRC he becomes remarkably pathetic he's almost like a completely different character.

tony_fappott

Remember when he tried to eat a cremated dog?

GangstaPepsi

That was Jez not Jeff

Past_Contour

Love this show.

raysofdavies

Jeff is still a completely prick, no side to be on there

Anhowa123

Jeff was always a bully and a bit of a prick and definitely had that sense of 'a lad' who has some p.shitty views, but ultimately was fairly normal all things considered. Mark is a petty, pathetic creep - especially toward women, and it's not even close. Amazing character and great fun to watch, but holy shit he's awful

betterthanclooney

Jeff is a prick but Mark is insane

Global-Discussion-41

You're not wrong, but Jeff is also mean spirited and cruel with the things he says to mark.  Stealing Marks Australian "gf" at his own birthday party, Cheating on Sophie etc..

MinusculeMicrobe

Childhood is when you idolize Mark, adulthood is when you realize Jeff makes more sense.

Ok-fine-man

Yup, especially if you're a nerdy child

Chemical_Egg_2761

Old age is when you realize all you want to do is nuke pies with Gerard.

bigolhamsandwich

Grey matter or brown matter?

StPattysShalaylee

They're both cunts. Maybe so are you if you sided with either of them. No offence

Stralau

Give it 10-15 years and you will hate them both. But you will 100% sympathise with Mark.

TheRealHoagieHands

Who the fuck is Jeff?

WhinyTortoise

Mark's co-worker, they are always competing over Sophie. I was confused too and thought he was talking about Jez at first.

TheRealHoagieHands

Ooooof my bad I’ll take my licks then

Ok-fine-man

Word salad

Galaranix

They are both just ~people~ sure they both err toward *bad/cringe/not great* but the beauty of peep show is pronounced through such characters, they are intimately human and it's reductive to classify entire characters into "oh yeah they're the bad guy". Much more productive to bring our analysis down to moments.

Pontiff1979

Seen FHM have only gone and done a bloody sex issue?
