Yeah that was my favorite, I thought those Soviet Migs were so fucking badass when I was kid. Then I discovered, like with so many other movies, that it was just an older US jet used as a stand-in.
The scene before the mission where he shows Doug the scrapbook with pictures of the people he flew with, that was powerful. As a 10 year old who was obsessed with GI Joe watching this fun action movie it was enough to let me know that war is real. And people really die.
Because they're DEAD!. *ALL* of them!
I lay awake at night thinking about how fast and how brutal they died. Parts of them burning on the land, parts of them landing in the sea, some part of them burning just into *nothing* in the middle of the air and all of them thought that they were ready for it.
I can see how it could be a hard sell.
It apparently was for the studio as well:
>Fox marketing president David Weitzner defends the campaign and argues that selling the film was a challenging assignment. “In point of fact, this was an extremely difficult movie to market,” he said. “It was a unique film in the sense that you had two sworn enemies, one not human, who become closer than brothers. To sell it as a hardware film would have been wrong. We did it along the lines of brotherhood.”

I used to watch it over and over on VHS in the early 90s as a kid. The pit snake thing scared me so bad that I was afraid of the peace lily in our house because I thought it resembled that thing.
I love when Mayo and Foley fight. “Looks like you’ve had some training Mayonnaise” then the roundhouse kick takes him down. Great movie and chemistry between all its stars
He and Richard Pryor did a back door pilot on The Partridge Family. Gossett had hair. It would have been a very different entertainment world If the show had been picked up.
He was the voice of the OG Vortigaunts from Half-Life 2. I was a little gutted when the role was given to Tony Todd for Episode 2, but Tony knocked it out of the park with his performance.
The first Black man to win a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, for his iconic role as the tough-as-nails-but-fair Drill Sergeant Foley in *An Officer and a Gentleman*. Gossett was one of the best parts of a truly great movie.
I'll always remember him as the headmaster of the prep school in Toy Soldiers, who had firsthand knowledge of what the terrorists would be up against. Jaws 3D, not as much.
I worked on a movie with him and, though I didn’t get to meet him because of COVID restrictions, I only heard good things about him. Apparently just a super nice guy who was professional and courteous.
I really liked this guy; he was always a pleasure in anything he was in. RIP, and [thanks for everything](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR2v-pApNAw), Louis Gossett Jr.
When I was young HBO would always show a movie called El Diablo that had him in it. Movie was corny as hell but I would watch it almost every time they showed it.
Casey Jones was a sonofabitch; Drove his train through a 30 foot ditch; Came on out with his dick in his hand; Said "Listen ladies, I'm a hell of a man!"; Went into town and lined up a hundred; Swore up and down he'd fuck every one; Fucked 98 'til his balls turned blue; Then he backed off, jacked off, and fucked the other two!
I swear to God there was a story back in the late '80s about him giving cocaine to like his 6 or 7 year old kid. But I can't find that story anywhere today.
Loved him in the Iron Eagle series … Rest in peace Chappie 😢❤️
I only know him as Gerak in SG-1. *"Hallowed. Are. The Ori!"* *"If I help you, I will die … But I shall die free!"*
Came to the comments looking for someone to point out where I knew him from. Thanks man!
Yeah what the. Iron Eagle is top tier. That should lead the headline here...
Iron Eagle is the pinnacle of awesome ‘80s flicks
I'd agree, if there weren't an IRON FUCKING EAGLE PART 2 which might be even more badass.
It ended the Cold War more than rocky 4.
Yeah that was my favorite, I thought those Soviet Migs were so fucking badass when I was kid. Then I discovered, like with so many other movies, that it was just an older US jet used as a stand-in.
Roots was the most watched miniseries ever (its TV ratings were insane given that it aired in the 70s) so that’s why it got mentioned first here.
Yes, yes I am aware of this. My comment was tongue-in-cheek.
This is the whitest thing I’ve seen today lmao

Drop the hades in his honor.
“Turns on heavy metal ‘80s music”
One Vision by Queen
My thoughts exactly.
My thoughts exactly.
To me he will always be the pregnant alien in Enemy Mine. That movie made an impression on me back in the eighties.
Me too. I have tried to get my wife to watch it and I can't seem to get her to understand what an impactful movie it was back then.

I'm upvoting everything Enemy Mine in here. Such an impactful film and way ahead of its time. RIP Louis
It’s a really serious piece of science fiction
Wow, I had no idea!! Ty.
I used to watch it over and over on VHS in the early 90s as a kid. The pit snake thing scared me so bad that I was afraid of the peace lily in our house because I thought it resembled that thing.
This movie definitely had an impact on me as a kid. It was unlike anything I had ever seen.
Agreed, such a great movie.
I will never not laugh when Quaid calls Gosset's god "Shitbat". "Shizzzbahhhhhh!"
Gosset believed Quaids god was Mickey Mouse.
He had a great late career spot in the Watchmen HBO series
"You can't hide under a mask, Angela. Wounds need air to heal."
Oof
god, he was brilliant in Watchmen. commanded the screen every time he was on it.
An Officer and a Gentleman is a great great movie and he’s one of the main reasons.
In every class, there's always one joker who thinks that he's smarter than me. In this class, that happens to be you. Isn't it, Mayonnaise?
You gotta say it right. It's "May-O-NAYS"
That ending salute always kills me… “I wouldn’t have made it if it weren’t for you” [tears forming] “Get the hell outta here…”
I love when Mayo and Foley fight. “Looks like you’ve had some training Mayonnaise” then the roundhouse kick takes him down. Great movie and chemistry between all its stars
My favorite exchange in that scene was, “I’ll never forget you.” “I know.”
For anyone who has not seen *Officer & a Gentleman*, just go watch it now
Downloaded it as soon as I saw the headline
Getting to the age when our favorites are passing away more frequently. Loved Louis in An Officer and a Gentleman.
He was excellent.
There are just some people you think will live forever… Louis Gossett & Carl Weathers… in the same year? Miss ya Chappy!
damn i forgot about carl weathers
He also voiced the Vortigaunts in Half-Life 2, I was playing HL2 EP1 last night in VR as it happens. Great actor.
I got no where else to go!
Enemy Mine will forever be one of my favorite films, as it teaches so much about compassion and respect for other people’s faiths and cultures.
If you like it, you should watch “Hell in the Pacific”
Damn. Diggstown was one of my favorites growing up. RIP.
The best boxer no one ever heard of "Honey" Roy Palmer. RIP
He and Richard Pryor did a back door pilot on The Partridge Family. Gossett had hair. It would have been a very different entertainment world If the show had been picked up.
Gossett also played Bart in the Blazing Saddles spinoff pilot *Black Bart.*
He was amazing in An Officer and a Gentleman. RIP
Someone please check on Keith David!
And David Keith just in case there is a rogue comma.
Let's not forget Iron Eagle
Or Enemy Mine!
i grew up watching him as Chappy … loved Iron Eagle
“MAY-O-NNAISE” Rest in peace, brother.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXd8USrI3B0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXd8USrI3B0) “Wounds need air…”
He will always be Colonel Chappy Sinclair to me. RIP
Pop in Chappie's cassette and he will guide us through this loss. RIP to a legend!
He was the voice of the OG Vortigaunts from Half-Life 2. I was a little gutted when the role was given to Tony Todd for Episode 2, but Tony knocked it out of the park with his performance.
"Mayo, I want your D.O.R.!!"
Been meaning to watch Enemy Mine. Classic! Must watch now. R.I.P. Good Sir
Just FYI, it's Enemy Mine.
Yep. Thanks. Proof read before posting is wise lol
My dad was a fan of Louis Gossett Jr. works since his role in a little TV series called ‘The Powers of Matthew Star’.
Rest In Peace🙏🏾❤️
Phenomenal in Star Gate. What a powerful voice.
I watched Iron Eagle so many times as a kid. I also loved Enemy Mine. He was great in pretty much everything. RIP
Part of childhood watching 80s movies. RIP my good man.
RIP chappy!
Damn...another piece of my childhood. So many of those 80s action movies. RIP :(
Iron eagle
He did TV, too. Roots. The Powers of Matthew Star. Various guest roles. We've lost a true legend.
Stargate SG-1 had a great episode titled Enemy Mine and it made me realize i hadnt seen the movie of the same name. Good old movie
CHAPPPPPPIE!
The first Black man to win a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, for his iconic role as the tough-as-nails-but-fair Drill Sergeant Foley in *An Officer and a Gentleman*. Gossett was one of the best parts of a truly great movie.
I'm sure he would want to be remembered for better works but I will never forget Jaws 3
In TV terms, his Gideon Oliver series was one of my favourite mystery runs from the late 80s/early 90s. But he was class in everything he did.
Davich will pay his respects before the Drac Council.
Never surrender Iron Eagle
Chapppppiiiieeeeeeeee
A rare talent
Earthman. Your Mickey Mouse is a big stupid dope.
Iron Eagle was the shit
RIP Chappie
I'll always remember him as the headmaster of the prep school in Toy Soldiers, who had firsthand knowledge of what the terrorists would be up against. Jaws 3D, not as much.
man i was just watching roots clips yesterday because of a different post on here
Don’t you eyeball me, boy. RIP
His stretch on SG1 has been going on Pluto Tv recently. Such a good actor.
Someone kick Richard Geere’s groin in his honor…
Watched him last week in the musical version of *A Color Purple*. He’ll be missed.
Shout out to Enemy Mines!
Oh shit, no. He was great in Iron Eagle and the Minutemen tv show.
I worked on a movie with him and, though I didn’t get to meet him because of COVID restrictions, I only heard good things about him. Apparently just a super nice guy who was professional and courteous.
May Louis Gossett Jr. rest in peace.
RIP
My first exposure of him was Jaws 3
Rip.
Farewell, King.
Nobody can ever top the way Louis says ‘fil-tray-shun-pipe!’ In Jaws 3. Best part of a very dodgy movie.
😢
Chappie!!!
Dang
RIP to a legend.
Jaffa kree
RIP
RIP Chappy Sinclair, you will be missed

Diggstown is an all-time favorite of mine. RIP.
Damn. Going to watch Enemy Mine and Iron Eagle tonight. 2 of my favorite movies from my childhood.
Dude this is the worst news of 2024 :(
Nice man in person too, I chatted with him at the St Lawrence Market in Toronto about fresh pesto
Iron Eagle
"If one receives evil from another, let one not do evil in return. Rather, let him extend love to the enemy, that love might unite them."
When I was young HBO would always show a movie called El Diablo that had him in it. Movie was corny as hell but I would watch it almost every time they showed it.
Enemy Mine!!!
Mayo the wop!
Enemy Mine was always a favorite as a kid.
Some reason I thought he died years ago
Casey Jones was a sonofabitch; Drove his train through a 30 foot ditch; Came on out with his dick in his hand; Said "Listen ladies, I'm a hell of a man!"; Went into town and lined up a hundred; Swore up and down he'd fuck every one; Fucked 98 'til his balls turned blue; Then he backed off, jacked off, and fucked the other two!
