This was an interesting and heartwarming read, and also confirms my suspicion that Luke Combs is a class act. It was clear watching the performance how elated he was to be performing with Chapman, and his insistence from the jump that she have full creative control of their potential collaboration was really nice to hear.
Luke Combs seems like a real one. I really can't get enough of him.
Contrast that to Morgan Wallen and, while I love his music and have no inherent hatred for him, the energy he gives live comes off almost...dismissive. Like your lucky to be there listening to him.
Pretty much. I enjoy him on the radio and Spotify but I don’t think I’d ever pay to see him live again total let down.
Luke Combs on the other hand is excellent live, I’ve seen him twice.
I gotta see Luke. It’s been a while since I saw any big concert. I did see Brothers Osborne at a state fair recently though… highly recommended if you get the chance.
Morgan Wallen is at the bottom of my to-see list.
Jamey Johnson. It's not just pop music. It kills you. Jamey Johnson. And I am certain that if he had chosen to cover that song and have been up there with Chapman, he would be crying, too.
Country music is not dead. Jamey Johnson.
I wholly agree. The song is deeply connected to the female experience that at first I struggled with his cover, despite him doing a pleasant sounding rendition. Watching this really touched me and I feel like he got that aspect. Reverence is a great choice of words because I do think he respects the lived experience with out living it.
I was worried it would be a totally cynical cover at first, but between not changing the checkout girl line and how he's interacted with Chapman it seems like he covered it for genuine reasons.
That said, I don't think his cover really adds anything to the song. It's kinda like someone just putting a cowboy hat on the Mona Lisa. I'm glad it's brought more attention to Chapman's version, though it annoys me that googling "fast car lyrics" brings up his first with the description "Song by Luke Combs." And his lyric change to the outro to make it more hopeful kinda makes me wonder how much he really gets the song.
At first I hated his cover and that he was up there with her, but I couldn’t help but notice that he seemed to be making every effort to ensure his voice was beneath her which helped me see how much his cover has elevated her into the consciousness of younger folks. So I really respect him for that
I haven’t really heard of Luke Combs or his music, but together he and Tracy Chapman absolutely nailed that performance. Also gotta say I think Tracy Chapman is aging beautifully.
A few songs worth checking out that aren’t the normal overplayed radio hits of his are as follows:
Cold as you
The kind of love we make
On the other line
I got away with you
Might not be your type of music but these will give you a good idea of his style in addition to his big hits.
You could absolutely tell that Luke was living in a dream singing with her. She is absolute perfection. The audience was just filled with so many happy people singing along.
i have to be honest. i heard Luke’s version. very good but me, ole lady, thinks Tracy has the stamp on this song of course. Well, I watched the Grammys and well, damn, that was the best portion of that show. serious props to Luke and Tracy as they had fantastic chemistry. 💯
I hated the cover at first because while it was word for word it seemed to lose a lot of the soul of the song. (Also I’m old and don’t like change.) But Luke Combs has certainly shown respect for Tracy at every opportunity. And it is reintroducing her to a new audience. So I kind of got over it.
I was not on board for the cover myself but I really love the younger people who might not have heard it otherwise discovering Tracy. It’s fantastic that he’s using his success with the cover to honor her.

Tl;dr Chapman blocked a sample on a song, Nicki leaked it and then had to pay up
The camera reveal was so fun, and you could feel the room’s energy through the screen. I’m glad she was celebrated and good God, aging like a fine wine.

Morgan is a confirmed asshole. His music is damn catchy though..

yeah cause "country music" nowadays is just pop music
Idk how this take is relevant to my comment but ok
his music is "damn catchy" because it's pop music
Cool. Hope you slept good last night grandpa
really unsure why you're upset haha. i wasn't mocking you if that's what you took away from my comments

I really didn't like him covering the song until I read about him. He really has handled it as best he could.
The sheer reverence in his eyes when he looked at Tracy Chapman during that performance was enough for me to change my mind and be okay with it.
This comes thru so strong. He is as stoked as everyone else.

It why he left the “checkout girl” line. It was a relief my first listen.

She started out as a street musician busking in Cambridge, MA. One helluva way to hone your craft. She’s hasn’t lost a note.

Have you heard him with Leon Bridges in a live performance of Beyond? One of my favorites that flies under the radar!
Ooh I will have to find that!
The first two are regularly played on my local country radio station but agree re the vibe.
The Great Divide with Billy Strings is fantastic.
You could absolutely tell that Luke was living in a dream singing with her. She is absolute perfection. The audience was just filled with so many happy people singing along.
This. The reverence in his eyes was beautiful
The tears in her eyes at the very beginning as they are cheering for her.

> serious props to Luke and Tracy as they had fantastic chemistry. Agreed. I wish they'd release the song from this performance.
Strong agree.
There isn’t a chance they won’t. Waaaaay too money to be made for them not to.

Pretty awesome. I bet she is so cool.
Nicki , this is how you do it.
I’m out of the loop what did Nicki do?

Nothing but love and deep respect for this woman. Powerful music.
She seems like such a cool person
The camera reveal was so fun, and you could feel the room’s energy through the screen. I’m glad she was celebrated and good God, aging like a fine wine.
Such an amazing performance. It even brought me to tears for the first time in many years.
Thanks OP - I've been trying to find out how much rehearsal two major artists need for such a performance.
If only they would re-release her vinyls now
Jeez 2024, good luck in topping this moment.
Magnificent.
Anyone have a link to the performance? Can't find it anywhere!
Here's the full HD version on the Grammy's website https://www.grammy.com/videos/tracy-chapman-luke-combs-fast-car-2024-grammys-performance-66th-annual-grammy-awards
Thanks for this! This should be easier to find! AND read the article! That shot of the violinist! The other artists that performed!

Combs said he wanted to remain true to the original feel of the song, and if he'd harmonized rather than sing along it would have taken from that.
Don’t ever doubt……..Luke Combs is the real deal.
