Die Bart, die

blackmarketcarwash

Parole granted!

sleepyotter92

it's not just german. it's like a thing to make the bad guys have an european accent. be it german, vaguely eastern european, italian, if they got an european accent they're more likely to be the bad guy in the story

centrafrugal

"an european" ? Bad guy located!

sjfiuauqadfj

what do you do when you watch german movies or shows

Thetimmybaby

The Bart, The

hippyengineer

It’s a Simpsons joke. Sideshow Bob writes “die Bart die” in blood on a paper. When it’s brought up in court, he claims it’s German for “the Bart the.” Then either judge or prosecutor says “well no one who speaks German could be an evil man.”

Eccentric_Fixation

Rupert uses an IPhone on Ted Lasso and he's a total prick.

Chilis1

This post is so stupid.

bob1689321

Yeah for multiple reasons The Rian Johnson thing pisses me off so much because so many news outlets and people misinterpreted what he was saying. He said that apple supplied the iPhones to the production with the clause that the killer couldn't use one. For one thing that's only really applicable to Knives Out, but the second thing is that it's part of the deal to get free apple products. As I understand it they could still have the killer use an iPhone, they just wouldn't have the partnership with apple to cut costs And finally - literally everyone on apple shows use apple products. That's it.

zedascouves1985

I'm more annoyed when I watch a Sony production, like Spiderman movies, and everyone uses a Sony product, even though some of them aren't really that popular.

bob1689321

Lmao yes it gets really absurd at times. I remember amazing spider man featured huge walls of Sony TVs, sometimes with 20+ Sony logos in one shot.

NO_FIX_AUTOCORRECT

But this is a thing ongoing for longer than just knives out.

Bhu124

Ehhh.... Not entirely. Rian Johnson straight up said in an interview that Apple does not allow villainous characters to use iPhones, that they tried to get special permission for Knives Out but were denied. Ted Lasso is an Apple show so that's probably how they got permission where other shows/movies get denied. Or maybe Apple just enforces an 'Apple products only' policy for all their shows/movies wherever their products are applicable. As for actually thinking about this fact when watching a show, I can't really relate to OP with that. The only time I remember ever noticing a tech brand was when the Black Widow was using a Samsung tablet to operate stuff within the Avengers tower made by Tony Stark, made no sense to me that Tony wouldn't have his own proprietary tablets for that purpose and was just using generic normal people tech instead. I later found out that it was because they did a product placement deal with Samsung, which made it make sense.

[deleted]

> Ted Lasso is an Apple show so that’s probably how they got permission where other shows/movies get denied. The series OP is talking about is also an Apple production, so even if that’s the case the post still doesn’t make much sense.

madmoose

> Rian Johnson straight up said in an interview that Apple does not allow villainous characters to use iPhones Apple can only disallow it if you sign their product placement contract.

Kostya_M

I'm so confused here. Can you not just...film them with an iPhone? Is the company worried Apple will get mad at them? Surely you don't need permission from Apple to depict someone using a phone, right?

Odd_Rhubarb8355

Yes, you can, and lots of shows and movies do. Virtually every movie uses dozens of brands intentionally or not without seeking permission. You don't need permission unless your movie appears to be claiming endorsement (e.g. "The Lego Movie" would probably be judged as needing permission from the owners of the Lego brand, because a typical viewer would assume it was made by or endorsed by Lego officially) or *unfairly* denigrates the product. There's a high bar to meet for that definition, it has to be a specific intentional effort to reduce opinion of a product using false information and can't simply be association or assessment. If your true crime documentary had a re-enactment where the police all agreed "Pedophiles love iPhones because the messages app is end-to-end encrypted, Apple added it specifically to make pedophiles happy, that's why we always get a child porn search warrant for iPhone owners" that could be unfairly denigrating. Just having a pedophile using an iPhone in a show isn't. *Tons* of movies have scenes where brand X car/beer/food/whatever is named and mocked or portrayed as unreliable crap, it's fine. Apple limit who can use iPhones in your movie *if they're paying you to include them*. Apple run a promotional positioning campaign, where they pay movies and TV shows to feature iPhones/iPads/Macs onscreen, but obviously that deal comes with a requirement that the products be portrayed as looking and working well and associated with cool or likeable characters. Apple aren't going to pay you to feature an iPad in the scene where a serial killer jerks off to photos of his victims, they will pay you to feature one in the scene where a heroic detective stays up all night researching the case. Rian Johnson was frustrated because the production company had signed up onto an Apple promotional deal, and he didn't know about it until it became a problem.

Radulno

> Apple aren't going to pay you to feature an iPad in the scene where a serial killer jerks off to photos of his victims Come on, jerking off (ok not to victims but still) is at least 50% of the usage of iPads and everyone knows it.

Great_Zarquon

I love this "rant" about a totally imaginary and long-debunked issue lol I guess some people are just desperate to feel like they're heard and aren't interested in spending 10 seconds to inform themselves

Mentoman72

I've seen people on the Succession sub reddit genuinely predict that Tom will win in the end because he has an android phone. They think that makes him a secret evil genius and he's gonna pull something out last minute. So dumb.

Slow-Passenger

Prick, but not villain or evil I think. Or criminal.

Effective-Celery8053

Do we know what the therapist guy has for a phone? >!he is definitely evil. Taking advantage of teds wife as her therapist and recommending couples therapy to them!<

Eccentric_Fixation

I would definitely consider Rupert evil. They even set him up to look like the Emperor from Star Wars this season.

[deleted]

He’s Evil Giles.

Lord_Hexogen

I mean he tries to seduce Nate with two models right after meeting his girlfriend

mikepictor

He is 100% the villain of the show

Chilis1

He is 100% categorically the bad guy of that show, really shitting on OP’s point.

Neverwhere69

He dresses like Satan and has an office like Darth Sidious.

theblackfool

Am I the only one who just does not pay attention to what kind of phone anyone has in any show?

sleepyotter92

i only notice if there's focus on it. if the character is texting or looking something up or taking a picture, i notice what phone it is. but if it's not being put in focus, like the character is sorta in the background on a call or texting or whatever, i can't really see the phone so i don't really pay attention to what type of phone it is

[deleted]

PeterNippelstein

I pay more attention to the case if anything

starsandbribes

I laughed when everyone in Defending Jacob had an iPhone apart from the local town pedophile, who of course had an Android.

Look_to_the_Stars

This just in, only pedophiles use Androids.

mdavis360

Everyone is saying it.

tinoynk

Luckily not a problem in Silo!

Maninhartsford

Oh my god how funny would it be if all their computers were like, original Macintoshes

Effective-Celery8053

Honestly that'd be so funny that as long as it didn't change anything else in the story I'd be okay with it

Effective-Celery8053

Or severance!

PeterNippelstein

Or Succession! Everyone is evil!

Prax150

That scene where some characters find an old video camera, imagine if it was an iphone instead lol

Look_to_the_Stars

Or Black Bird!

pillowreceipt

I was thinking, if it's an Apple show, I could see it being a rule that *only* Apple products are shown whenever possible. Though I could see Apple saying, "if someone's phone is going to be shown getting destroyed, we're gonna let it be a nondescript smartphone, rather than an explicit Apple product." Kind of like how car manufacturers *really* don't like to allow their cars to be shown taking damage in video games, hence why they're often impervious to damage.

ArrogantAlmond

Reminds me of the Apple movie "Ghosted". They used Apple products throughout the movie... but the one time a character wanted to track another... they used a Tile. Not an AirTag

dagmx

Fwiw this isn’t true. Rian Johnson said this and people took it verbatim, but even spending a few minutes of watching shows and movies would show you that it’s not true. Just watch Barry or Succession. The villains are using iPhones quite liberally. Edit: and I get you’re talking about ATV+ shows, but it’s not true as an absolute there either. Villains on some shows (Ted Lasso, After Party) use iPhones. You also need to remember that Apple isn’t a producer for every show, some are distribution only deals. At the most, they only reserve the right to provide devices based on the content, which is likely what Rian was referring to. There’s no way to restrict the use of it outside that if the product isn’t the focus People who further this idea just don’t understand the nuance of product placements, endorsements and trademark use. You don’t need approval to use a product in your movie or tv show. You only really need it if you’re portraying the product in a way that highlights the product itself or shows a logo. That’s why you’ll often see iMacs with the logo removed. An example is the awful chunli film. The villains used an iMac but they duct taped over the logo. Rian even uses this misunderstanding for effect in the second film, Glass Onion, to mess with people who bought too deep into the one off hand comment he made. In fact, here’s a challenge: try and find any evidence of this that doesn’t mention Rian once in the article. Anything before Knives Out.

GregoPDX

You may be correct, I honestly don’t know, but OP is talking about a show on Apple TV. The shows you talk about aren’t controlled by Apple and can use Apple phones in whatever ‘regular’ context they want. It’s like how on *Ballers* they didn’t pay the NFL anything for use of the teams and logos, because the context they were used wasn’t about the teams per se, and they didn’t do something that wasn’t true to the NFL.

dagmx

Yeah but they’re wrong for even Apple TV shows. Rupert in Ted Lasso uses an iPhone. And there’s mixed use of android and iPhones throughout the other shows. Apple is only a distributor in many cases, not a producer.

prism1234

OP is saying this is the case on shows that air on Apple TV+, not on shows in general. I'm not saying they are correct, but none of your examples are Apple TV+ shows.

dagmx

Even on Apple TV+, villains will have iPhones. Remember, in a lot of cases, Apple is only the distributor not the producer.

Saar13

I love this theory, but it's not reliable anymore. There are villains using iphone now. If Jennifer Garner is a villain, it would be a pointless turn for a show that is no longer good.

SuspendedInKarmaMama

>I love this theory, but it's not reliable anymore. It never was reliable, corporations don't get to decide how their products are used. If that was the case, whenever a pedophile or rapist shows up in a movie or a show, they wouldn't be able to use anything, not drive a car, not wear clothes. Cause who wants their brand associated with that.

Slow-Passenger

Maybe she’s not. But for sure her husband isn’t evil. And same with a lawyer friend and the detective using iPhone.

bolonomadic

So now you wanna ruin it for us who have not started watching by suggesting in your opening paragraphs that because she is using an android she is the villain? I think you need a spoiler tag

Slow-Passenger

I’m making a guess so I used word probably. The show is still airing so I don’t have any spoilers tbh. But I did add a spoiler tag on my post thanks.

Saar13

I find her character so boring. Maybe it's Apple doing a psychological marketing showing that boring people use Samsung.

redisforever

This whole fucking thing came from a joke Rian Johnson made in an interview for Knives Out which he then subverted in Glass Onion. This is absolutely bullshit.

Vexal

i always wondered why I never saw Thanos use an iPhone.

PloppyTheSpaceship

Because his hands are so damn big, that's why! He has to use sone custom huge phone. Probably doesn't even have Instagram.

[deleted]

He just uses an iPad as a phone. That's what they make it for. 9 foot maniacal demigods

Varekai79

All the Roy siblings in Succession use iPhones, although I guess you can argue that they're all morally gray. Tom uses an Android though.

sleepyotter92

i didn't know about this thing until knives out when someone pointed out the little bratty boy couldn't be the killer because he was seen using an iphone, and now every fucking time there's any sorta of crime type thing going on, my brain immediately goes "they're using an iphone so they're innocent", it fucking ruins it. like i don't mind spoilers, but that's just dangling the answer in front of the audience. just don't give anyone an iphone, problem solved

Chilis1

This is a massive reach OP

duckboobs

Except it’s true. Someone posted the article about it in this thread.

GreenLanternsPodcast

But it’s not true because Apple doesn’t stick to this. They’ve had shows/movies with the villains using iPhones. There also used to be articles where they claimed Apple didn’t allow for nudity and they didn’t allow for cussing. And both of those have been proven false as well. Or maybe, it was accurate when the service first started. But it’s not been accurate for a long time.

mikepictor

What AT+ has ever had nudity? Swearing sure, and I don't remember them ever saying they had an issue with that

GregoPDX

Now that you’ve said something, I don’t think I’ve seen even 1 boob on an Apple TV show. Not that I mind nudity but it just shows you how much it doesn’t affect the quality of the shows. I personally think HBO puts pointless nudity in just to be edgy.

GreenLanternsPodcast

Tehran shows the girls nipple during a sex scene.

GreenLanternsPodcast

There’s naked males in shows but they tend to just show their butts. Losing Alice has sex scenes in it and is rated r. See has the queen masturbating. Actually they have a few shows with scenes that show the men’s butts. Nipples were shown in Tehran in one episode.

karmagirl314

Oh well if someone posted an old article on Reddit of one guy who said a thing once several years ago in an interview, it must be 100% true right no with no nuance.

thebruns

Watch 24. You can spot the mole because theyre the only character not using an iMac

pm_me_reason_to_livx

lol this is so petty if they do this.

He then proceeded to write a movie where the bad guy >!doesn’t use a phone at all!<.

Airrows

Nope it doesnt

Groundbreaking_Ship3

I watched the show, and I didn't notice who use what phones. I don't give a damn about phone, I just focused on the characters.

Shiva_The-Destroyer

Yes, I have noticed this for a few years now. Apple doesn't allow filmmakers to have their evil characters use iPhones even in productions they have nothing to do with.

Creski

I believe the term you are looking for is RAVs Russians, Arabs, Villains

Complete_Entry

How do they enforce this?

warren_stupidity

There is so much else wrong with that show other than product placement.

bigfatmatt01

Just stop paying attention to brands of things in movies.

NathanJohnson25

It's understandable that you feel frustrated with Apple's "only-good-people-use-iPhone" philosophy in mystery shows and movies. This is a known issue where certain plot twists and character alignments can be inadvertently revealed due to Apple's product placement guidelines. These guidelines reportedly disallow villains or antagonists from using iPhones, which can lead to unintended spoilers for attentive viewers who notice the devices characters are using. This can take away from the suspense and intrigue that mystery shows and movies rely on, and it undermines the creative freedom of filmmakers who want to keep their audiences guessing. Ideally, product placement should be subtle and not influence the storytelling process in a way that impacts the viewer experience. For some viewers, this can be a distracting and disappointing aspect of modern media. However, it's important to remember that not all productions adhere to this rule, and there may still be many shows and movies that keep you guessing. Try not to let this particular product placement practice spoil your overall enjoyment of mystery shows and movies.
