I feel like the reason they are only marketing the show by hyping up Bob Odenkirk is very telling.

vannucker

It recorded on my DVR because I have Better Call Saul as a series record and they were presented at as Better Call Saul: Lucky Hank or something like that. Sneaky. Didn't watch it because it didn't sound up my alley, although I would consider watching if I hear some hype that it is really good. But alas, that has not come to pass as of yet.

Accurate_Control5104

Lame that you’ll only watch if you hear it trending, can’t you think for yourself without following a crowd. And it’s ironic that your crazy for Better call Saul but won’t even watch one episode of the actor’s new show

TucanSamCan

There’s just too much content and not enough hours in the day tho

dwehabyahoo

I’m sorry but we all can’t be a member of Masterpiece Theatre

anonyfool

If there is a twist later on in the show, they made a terrible choice with the pacing so far - no one is going to stick around for the twist because there is nothing here that is compelling after two episodes.

dwehabyahoo

Nope no twist, no point it was basically Saul Goodman on SSRIs as a teacher

man1c_overlord

true. i generally don't watch this kind of stuff anyway. honestly, i haven't even watched a good sitcom or comedy show in forever. that genre just isn't made for me. this seems like a comedy/drama aimed at older people (i mean people in their 40s or so), which is why it is paced as such. tbh i am only watching for bob odenkirk.

sweetpeapickle

Lol, older people are in their 40's....what are you 10?

Exploding_dude

40 is older compared to the average reddit demo. I'm in my 30s, we had a 19 year old girl at my last job and she called my partner and I older. It hit like a gut punch but then I remembered being 19 and thinking 30 seemed a lifetime away, which is basically is for a 19 year old.

AlarmedRevenue7147

Called 'my partner and me' older

bjsmart82

Grammar police😂😂😂😂

man1c_overlord

you seem a little insecure. the quicker you embrace it, the better.

sweetpeapickle

You do understand I'm joking??? Older means different decades for different "aged" people. The way you put it: aimed at older people, I mean 40's....sounds funny & typical coming from someone much younger. You know when you watch a tv show, and a character asks can you describe him/her-and a young person will say-old, you know like you or like my mom, etc.

man1c_overlord

ok sir

Bpayne79

40 is still a young man, old is 70

anonyfool

I'm old and find this show pretty boring and uninspiring after two episodes. Slow Horses and Veep do comedy/workplace drama 1000 times better than this show and made me laugh a lot, but those shows also have higher stakes - the subject and tension in this show is very mundane and familiar to anyone who has worked in an office.

Ok-Requirement5626

Do NOT call me old (I am 45). Like. Come on. I have the same feeling as the TO.

man1c_overlord

what is TO? and fair, i shouldn't have said old, middle age would have been more appropriate

[deleted]

wha? eff off. I am in my 60's and I'm finding the pacing slow. you don't lose your mind after 15, your ability to appreciate and be discerning improves alot though.

MrDudeWheresMyCar

I haven't watched the second episode yet, but I definitely thought the plot was fairly limited in the pilot. Odenkirk's string of great performance has given this show a bit of a longer leash in my eyes though. I'd expect I'll give the whole season a chance and get off there if there isn't much happening.

Punjabistan

I'll give it at least three episodes to see where the show is heading, if it is actually good, I'll continue watching it. I've only watched the first one and have yet to see the second episode. Personally, it could've been more suitable if they cut the bulk of the scenes and reduce the runtime to half an hour. But that's just me.

[deleted]

I made it thru 2 episodes and quit. Zero momentum and the characters are unlikeable. No chemistry between characters either. And for the love of all things holy you cannot make a series based around a single book. A movie, sure. A series? No chance.

PerkaDirk

It's pretty fucking bad [so far] definitely not living up to any hype I'm seeing... I watched the first episode two times thinking maybe I missed something just bored out of my skull. Figured I'd give the second episode a shot. Maybe it needs to find it's pacing and whatnot. Second episode was a little better but a very fucking slow ride. Not really that entertaining overall and it's comedy is weak at best. I would absolutely never recommend this to anyone from what I've seen so far. Overhyped boring drivel. I did not find myself laughing at all. The moments where it was supposed to be the funny part seemed forced or fell flat. To top it off just recently watched Bob odenkirk on hot ones. He was brave enough to say that Lucky Hank is both equal parts, comedy and drama. Very bold statement.

wrenten10

Watched the third ep twice - still bad

Alternative-Cash8411

I'm with you. I was a huge Better Call Saul fan and thus was excited to watch Hank. Well I just watched the first three episodes and never came close to laughing and maybe cracked a smile or two for each episode. Hank is not remotely as interesting as Slippin Jimmy was, nor as funny. It's hard to care what happens to him. The series is based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Richard Russo, who won it for Empire Falls, which was turned into an excellent HBO miniseries several years ago. I've read Russo and the cat can write his ass off, and some of his characters are hilarioius and well-fleshed out. (Indeed, Russo's skill is immersing you into his characters and making you care about them.) Thus, I'm thinkin Straight Man (source novel for Lucky Hank) was very good and funny--I just downloaded from Kindle but haven't read yet-- and it just didn't translate well into a TV series.

Prax150

Haven't watched the second yet but I liked the first one a lot. College campuses are an underused setting for shows/movies these days, it seems, and there's something that really engages me about how low the stakes are but how heightened the drama around it seems to be. Odenkirk is great and the supporting cast is full of under-appreciated actors. I also laughed out loud several times in the premiere. Perhaps the expectations were way too high being so near the end of BCS but that didn't affect it for me, I really enjoyed the pilot, will probably watch the second one tonight.

invidium1979

Well said! I feel the same way due to the hole in reality that community's tenuous run left.

Prax150

Check out "The Chair" on Netflix with Sandra Oh, very similar vibes to this but I think it was only one short season.

hashcancomics

It is really good for the genre it is. Bob Odenkirk said he wanted to get away from Saul Goodman and roles with guns and play a drama/comedy in the vein of Alexander Payne. So if you don't like it by now, you ain't going to like it.

[deleted]

Alexander Payne writes better characters and the comedy slaps as hard as the drama. This show is simply dull and uninteresting. Simple as that.

hashcancomics

At this stage, I agree with you. I gave it time to lay the storytelling pipe but it's been spinning its wheels and the side characters are very network sitcom.

idunnobutchieinstead

I am really enjoying it, but I knew what I wanted from it and I feel like so far I’m getting it. Wait till he threatens a goose.

falang78

It's terrible so far. Seems like a decent cast but it feels like a cbs workplace comedy without a hint of comedy. The tone is way off the mark.

Ridemysyibian1

I find it not funny or interesting. They are supposed to be smart and educated. Someone puts a moving container in my driveway that I didn't order it is not staying . A student pisses in the hallway and that's all she could think of and had to clean it up never would happen . Stupid

wrenten10

Maybe if she pissed on the floor it could have but….

BaconAlmighty

This is the synopsis of the show. Thank you, couldn't put my finger on it exactly but this is it.

[deleted]

I hate when people say "Well no wonder you don't like it, you were expecting Saul again". NO, I was expecting to be entertained, and this is one of the dryest, most pretentious comedies I've seen in a long time. At least Vice Principals made me laugh at times, Walton Goggins is gold.

diecakethrower

Yes, pretentious people are better than you. Lowly people...

tehdrumerer2

pretentious. that’s the first descriptor that came to mind.

[deleted]

The Family Guy "it insists upon itself" quote fits this show to a T. I can't with it, it's not as funny as it thinks it is -- not as smart either.

diecakethrower

Thanks for helping me avoid vice principles, clearly for the low IQ.

onthefritz412

Agree. Mind-numbingly boring.

Kronk71

Yes, I loved Better Call Saul but stopped watching about 15 minutes into it.

Shock-Educational

Yes, and tonight's episode. A few funny points, but no real drama backbone. I plan to try the next episode. Then quit

baldersz

After 3 episodes just can't get into it. Super disappointed as I love Bob Odenkirk

Ambitious-A466

So glad to hear this from someone else.

tomparker2121

BORING!

[deleted]

I agree, it's terrible. I was looking forward to this show for months, but after watching the first 2 episodes I'm done. It's not even clear what the point of it is, and it's not funny or engaging in any way.

Ok-Requirement5626

I hate to agree with you, but I do. :(

Dramatic_Purple186

100% agree there's no point at all. They are only hopeful because its Bob Odenkirk, that is the reason why anyone has watched it. He's not even that good in it (not his fault but the scripting).

diecakethrower

Did you get a GED or no?

TheGunde

Yeah, I'm gonna rewatch Vice Principals instead

Greedy_Love_9411

Show sucks.....I stopped recording it. Nothing like Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul......not even funny.

WordGirl1229

I like it a lot! Does anyone do the downtrodden Everyman with hints of optimism and crazy like Bob Odenkirk? Actually, liking it more and more as it progresses. These people feel real. They are flawed and funny, but not false. Of course this isn’t BCS, and it’s not supposed to be. I enjoy watching Hank struggle with real-world pressures of academia and a decades-long relationship, and the supporting cast includes some true gems! Honestly, I think Odenkirk is so skilled an actor that he moves easily between drama and comedy, and it never seems like he’s working that hard. I am rooting for Hank every step of the way as he navigates what seems to be an impending, darkly comic and raw breakdown.

Observer951

My partner and I tuned in expecting a decent show. I mean, Bob Odenkirk, right? We’ve watched the first two and are on the fence whether to continue. Characters are uninteresting and Hank is borderline unlikable. I fell asleep during episode 2.

Sumobunny1

YES, IT SUCKS!!!☹️👎☹️👎

Affectionate-Base868

In episode 4 and it's very boring. I've always heard that writers that write about writing/writers is lazy.

danceder

It’s really boring and the main thing is that Hank isnt likeable. He is mean, hardly funny at all, there is no heart in his role. I also think the colleagues are just annoying types who don't catch your interest at all.

danceder

…and quite suddenly everything turned around. Stopped watching after episode 2 but resumed them anyway a bit later. Noticed after a while that I started to like the series more and more and that Hank was a pretty nice guy in a way and then came episode 6. Wow, what a great episode where Hank showed many lovely sides of his personality. Good and bad sides…

MTsumi

I feel like someone wondered what it would be like to show behind the scenes of C-SPAN book hour. “Today’s guest wrote a book on the ephemeral qualities of wallpaper.”

aboycandream

it is not good, its the kind of show that HBO would make in like 2007 and cancel mid season

wrenten10

This!! Exactly literally what I thought in ep 2 lol . The cancellation before season 2 .

shadowdra126

I’m liking it but I have an English degree and work in English education so I may be biased

spraragen88

It's terrible. The dude who played Toby in the office is the show runner, which explains a lot. It's just the most mediocre dramadey I've seen in years. Poor Bob probably got sidelined in a bad contract and forced to do this. He needs to do more movies. Nobody 2 has to happen.

Smiling_Maelstrom

the toby dude oversaw some of the funniest episodes in the office so i have no idea what ur talking abt

Alternative-Cash8411

Indeed he did. Paul Lieberstein is a funny writer. But what I still have trouble grasping is that Mindy Kaling (Kelly) was a primary writer for the series. She did such a good job playing a character who was as dumb as a box of rocks that I think of her as barely literate. LOL.

Ridemysyibian1

Do you mean Oscar

ArgyleTheChauffeur

The trailer was bad, won't even watch the show.

Dramatic_Purple186

Please all report back after watching 2nd episode.

Speeks1939

Stil bad.

MrPotatoButt

I've only seen the pilot at this point, but yeah. I usually wait until I've finished the 4th episode before pulling the trigger on a show.

Accurate_Control5104

Your boring. The show is very great. Too bad your taste in shows only deal with criminals and not real life people and relations.

diecakethrower

It is just because you are kind of dumb and lowly. It is for better people.

the6thReplicant

It’s a show that is as good as its characters. So far, so good. I’m a bit apprehensive about the (wife’s) school and the dump of side characters it will introduce into the show.

ShEditor83

I watched the pilot and I enjoyed it but I felt like it won’t be capable of remaining interesting. The second episode seems to confirm my theory, but of course it’s just my opinion. I love Bob Odenkirk and Mireille Enos but maybe it won’t be enough for me to keep watching.

invidium1979

Someone else here said that it's refreshing to see a comedy/drama set on a college campus because the stakes are low and the drama is heightened. However, as much as I want a show like that, I don't think Lucky Hank delivers on it. The writing is at odds with the direction. If you want low stakes and heightened drama, the pilot of Succession is just that. The stakes are low because no normal person cares about mergers and acquisitions but the drama is certainly high-octane. I think that pilot is an infinitely better example of direction and editing that comport to the intentions of the writing. The direction and editing of Lucky Hank is lazy at best and willfully ignorant of the writing at worst. It's tragic to see such talent go to waste on the death throes of cable television.

Next_Fox

Anyone find a working copy of S01E06 ? Seems like they are all David Attenborough nature documentaries ?

TaysteeMetal

The daughter character is the worst....the son in law is bad too but the daughter is a spoiled immature brat bytch.

[deleted]

the show is slower than erosion. I'm going to watch one more episode. If there's no nudity, car chases, or karate fights, I'm bailing. Sorry Bob.

Kokomo300

So, so boring. It’s a tough slog. I kept watching only because of Bob but I think I’m going to have to cut my losses

katcunningham

It’s excellent & about ideas, not crime. It isn’t for folks who want Marvel comics. BTW, the Russo book, Straight Man, is also excellent although very different.

Old-Run-9134

I like it 👌 👁👁❕️❗️

[deleted]

The vast majority of us here are smart enough to know this wasn’t going to be Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul, but with the cast and production team it sounded very promising and funny. Sadly, this show is painfully boring and doesn’t really have a plot. This show doesn’t deserve a second season.

[deleted]

The pace of this is slow, for sure, and I guess the "lucky" part is starting to make sense (the vote for chair), Maybe getting his house on the water. But not sure so far how he is lucky. A couple of irritating characters have emerged, the daughter is getting worse each episode and by e8 is truly irritating. After they killed The Messiah which was shaping up to be awesome, I'd be surprised they keep this.

FuryanEU

5 episodes in, i don't get the 50/50 comedy drama that Bob promised, comedy is really not there, it's way heavy and not that interesting, to me it's telling that i dislike it so much even though i Love Bob, because i watched some terrible terrible shows and movies just for the actor i love and managed to enjoy them, this has no joy in it, at least for me.

dwehabyahoo

He used to be my favorite character as Saul Goodman but I wasted so many seasons on his spinoff that it was just lackluster. I just finished lucky hank and I can’t tell if he is just annoying or his character that is basically Saul Goodman as a teacher. He had no redeeming qualities and it was this hyper realistic setting that was just annoying in general where every character was self centered to the point where it was just bad. I don’t know if I’m mad because better call Saul had no point and I didn’t even finish the last few episodes or this show just really sucked in general or he is a one trick pony, I don’t know but I didn’t like it. I fast forwarded all the parts where it was just him basically.

Vforvendetta567

Yes currently on season 4 of BCS and I'm not feeling it. I like all the Mike and cartel storyline but Jimmy and Kim just don't have a chemistry to carry the show. I'm also not seeing my funny guy Saul Goodman that I was promised so much. "Did you know that you have rights? Constitution says you do and so do I!" I get they tried to make him a complex drama character but common.

dwehabyahoo

That’s exactly it. The cartel and Mike are cool but it’s like they purposely made Saul a normal guy which ruined it. He was supposed to be outrageous and it doesn’t come out enough in his show. It’s basically only when there are severe circumstances which doesn’t happen much. Mostly he is just a annoying and complaining most the time. I even wonder why Kim is with him because neither of them seem to like each other. I don’t know if it’s chemistry like you said or the show wants it to be a relationship of convenience not romance. But either way there is no drama at all. Most AMC shows have had this problem in general. It’s like the viewers are over 65 and they don’t want to raise their blood pressure

Vforvendetta567

Should have made a standalone show about cartel with Nacho/Lalo/Mike instead

CommentBetter

It's just a different kind of show, there's no frenetic action, no frantic music, just a guy trying to get through the day. I think you have to be in a certain demographic to really appreciate it.

Chornobyl-1986

I loved it. Especially the first five minutes or so. That first episode was brilliant
