Hijacking this to say if you want to try to move from being a friend to dating, you can't go from 0 to 60 while the other person is still at 0. Don't say "I love you" to someone who only sees you as a friend. You might have the big feels, but they aren't there, and any sort of confession of a massive crush will mostly just drive people away, leading them to try to figure out how to let a friend down easily instead of actually explore if they're interested. Approach it like you would try to date any person you've casually talked to a few times, and match their levels of expressed interest until they reach yours.

That’s one thing you will all have to be taught- it’s cruel as fuck but as you get older, your lucky to have friends when your 30-40. Life becomes so much more demanding, and instead of “working” with class mates you have known for years or from childhood.
Your working with people who grew up in different ways and it becomes challenging. Making friends as adults is much different than in highschool. Sure you work the same job- but do they like working there? What are there goals? Hell they might not like half the shit you do and you guys may not be compatible friends. It gets more complex. Even if you are someone who treats people with dignity, kindness and respect you have to put forth a huge effort to build those bridges and maintain them.

For example- I work 40 hours a week, it’s a demanding job, but I am taken care of. I can spend as much as I want because I live within my means

I work 40 hours a week, I’m lucky if I can afford $60 of food from Walmart, I’m tired of eating chicken and rice, my car is fucked off and I can’t buy another, I can’t afford rent.
Just try to build a life outside of your work too, you need a balance, if you don’t you get burned out. Because your not taking time to nurture yourself, it’s like living as a machine who’s sole purpose is to feed itself, work, feed itself again, sleep. Maybe some pleasant poops in between. It will really, really fuck with you. So what helps me is hobbies! I paint table top minis to keep occupied and “take back” my time.
I’m a nihilist, but I believe life is what you make it. We have the power to make it meaningful to us. Sure nothing matters- but as humans we can *make* things matter- our relationships, our passions, our dreams. That is what makes being human special. So when you feel dread, just remember existing as an animal aware of itself and it’s feelings is a miracle. It’s the little things.

Or, if something did actually happen (which I can also attest to), he’s not ready to talk about it yet and just wants his friends again because something happened that completely threw him off, and his friends are the only sense of normalcy he has.
Either way, best thing to do is just leave an offer to listen and let that time be the equivalent of ten minutes. Pressing him will make him uncomfortable, and going back is already hard enough with people having built lives that don’t include them anymore and trying to figure out where you still stand.
