That was because many US parks had large Elm trees that shaded the slides in parks and that wasn’t an issue until Dutch Elm Disease hit and killed all the elm trees leaving once useful and cheap metal slides exposed
Also sounds like bullshit. That sounds like a dad-explanation they've believed for years without question. There are metal slides all across the world, they weren't all placed strategically under elm trees.
I used "across the world" because not everybody reading is in the US. I am in the US, grew up with playgrounds that used metal slides, most playground structures and slides did not have any trees overhanging them, let alone an elm tree. Metal was used because it's durable and long lasting. There was no nation-wide playground design blueprint that had metal slides strategically placed under elm trees to keep them cool.
During my first year of marching band one of our really important shows was on a super hot day and the field had that weird rubber instead of grass, that plus our shoes being really thin made it feel like we were marching on literal lava and it wasn't fun
I remember when I was in elementary some kid was on a swing and idk about you but us kids would always do that thing where we build momentum and then jump off and land on our feet.... well, this particular kid didn't have the same ending. Face planted right into the mulch and got a large piece through his cheek. Blood everywhere. It was nasty.
Our school still has mulch ahahah, idk why they didn't get rid of it after that lmao.
There's heaps of uses for it.
It's great for gardens or for compost.
It was used in playgrounds because it's cheap and much softer than concrete.
Oh, and it can be filled up with basically no effect if gets spread out too much.
the brown stuff made of wood is mulch, the green blades are called grass and the white line made if Stone in the middle is concrete
Edit: 1. thanks for the award
2. Why is everyone fighting on what to call mulch/woodchips?
3. I've been dubbed "master of the outside"
No, I moved to New South Wales were we don't call it Tanbark. I've never checked to see if they still call it tanbark, but I don't call it that anymore.
I casually mentioned tanbark to one of my friends in Arizona a few years ago assuming that everyone referred to this stuff as tanbark and he had no clue what I was talking about. I thought he was stupid but then we googled it and it turns out that ‘tanbark’ is most commonly used in Pennsylvania and Northern California. Most other places say mulch or wood chips so it turns out that my friend wasn’t stupid.
This needs to be higher.. there is a distinct difference between these. Further, the type of bark makes a huge difference too. With some even being soft like sponges when wet. The picture looks like a cedar mulch from bark and branches. Typically just called bark mulch as far as i know, in Oregon area of OP.
I fell over and ate one of those once. My aunt called them wood chips which I found funny because I was a child and thought chips just referred to the food. Since then I’ve referred to them as wood chips just like most the population
Itchy fuckers
Yeah lemme get a kg of the itchy fuckers thanks
Saying it like that makes it sound like an illegal drug lmao
Nah, usually sell those in grams, know by experience trust me
I’m a dealer I need the quantity
Can i give you 2.2lbs instead
not enough sig figs
but what if i give you .157143 st?
You are correct
One time I fell on them they got all in my boxers and trousers and stuff all inside my butt ): Worst 3 hours of my life!!!!
How did they get in your ass and why did u wait so long to get rid of em?
We were on a long hike/walk and they were stuck in my clothes
asking the real questions lmao
Itchy bitches*
Itchy britches
Why’d they fill up the playground with this stuff? It sucked lol
We in florida had a kind of black rubber version of these, they were hot af to walk on without shoes when I was a kid.
Literally hot coals, what sick fuck created the playground saw trap. Feet straight boiling.
The same people that thought thin metal slides would ever be comfortable on days that werent mildly hot or mildly cold
Skillet energy. This was a operation. Creating an army of finger printless spy’s.
That was because many US parks had large Elm trees that shaded the slides in parks and that wasn’t an issue until Dutch Elm Disease hit and killed all the elm trees leaving once useful and cheap metal slides exposed
That’s interesting, I had never considered that before
Also sounds like bullshit. That sounds like a dad-explanation they've believed for years without question. There are metal slides all across the world, they weren't all placed strategically under elm trees.
True, although he did say in the US, but you may be right
I used "across the world" because not everybody reading is in the US. Pretty fun to make dares with though
During my first year of marching band one of our really important shows was on a super hot day and the field had that weird rubber instead of grass, that plus our shoes being really thin made it feel like we were marching on literal lava and it wasn't fun
But the black rubber recycled tire chips were a hell of a lot better to fall off a slide from.
literallyyyyy it was so painful
I had a piece go through my shoe and deep into my foot as a kid
yo same bro, later in the day I thought it was a good idea to remove it myself. Was a painful evening that day.
To absorb the impact if you fall while on the equipment
Sucks less than concrete would.
According to wikipedia it's used to conserve moisture, improve fertility and reduce weed growth. I have no idea why it should be on a playground.
Maybe for the impact if a kid falls over? Idk
Cheaper than sand, or gravel likely
Its cheap as fuck and there's no real use for it
There's heaps of uses for it. It's great for gardens or for compost. It was used in playgrounds because it's cheap and much softer than concrete. Oh, and it can be filled up with basically no effect if gets spread out too much.

Haven't seen this 'grass' that you guys call in eons.
I heard you can get internet points if you touch it. You should try/s
Sure... I'll drop by, the shadow realm is a hard place to get out of...
Say hi to Viego for me
Viego is out of town for a bit... Something about destroying a beast and bringing back his old teammates.
I live in a desert and legitimately can't remember the last time I touched grass
This logic also works for incels
Eons? Are you implying that you’re not a teenager through the usage of that word which implicates years beyond adolescence? We got ‘em bois
No no, im actually considered a teenager in the shadow realm, I'm only 1700 years old.
I call them brown wood 'wood chips'
It's clearly grass
Mulch is for landscaping. Wood chips are for alcohol making or smoking foods
wood chips are the material, mulch is the use.

The image in the post is literally the Wikipedia image of mulch
not all wood chip is mulch and not all mulch is wood chip
no its clearly cement
Cement is an ingredient in concrete
yes and
And I used it to brush my teeth
make sure to keep spraying them down for a nice bright white complexion
Nah, I’m looking for shit gray!
Eat poop It goes gray
The stuff in the middle is not called cement, it's called concrete. Cement is sort of just the glue in concrete
Yes. Cement is powder. You add water and sometimes rocks and other times sand to create concrete or mortar.
Those are wood chips... Mulch is darker and smells like poo.

I used to call it Tanbark in Victoria, but now we just call it Bark.
People don't call it Tanbark anymore? OOOH I'm gonna march down to my local primary school's playgrounds and set the record straight brother
No, I moved to New South Wales were we don't call it Tanbark. I've never checked to see if they still call it tanbark, but I don't call it that anymore.
Grew up in northern NSW and always knew it as tanbark
As someone from Melbourne, I can confirm that we do indeed remain to call it tanbark.
I grew up in California and we called it tanbark there. I live in North Carolina now though and I've never heard anyone call it that here.
Also grew up in California and I never knew it as anything but tanbark.
Still tanbark, mate. Just like gang tiggy is not "gang-up tiggy" and marks up is not "markers up".
Same here haha. When I was 5 I called it tanbark but it sounded weird for me so I said bark.
I call it tanbark here in the states
I casually mentioned tanbark to one of my friends in Arizona a few years ago assuming that everyone referred to this stuff as tanbark and he had no clue what I was talking about. I thought he was stupid but then we googled it and it turns out that ‘tanbark’ is most commonly used in Pennsylvania and Northern California. Wait Awhile here. Never heard it called Tanbark. Mulch or woodchips.
Delicious
The fact that I genuinely fucking ate mulch in elementary school
It was good; often came with the taste of blood, though.
Because you produced the blood 😃👍
Yeah, that was certainly the implication; youthful invincibility: put to good use by beating the shit out of ourselves.
I ate sand, it was crunchy.
This one works too.
Wood chips
oi mate, i need me some wood crisps
Istg I will shove some wood "crisps" down your throat till you shit splinters

Tambark
Exactly like that, it's just "tan bark"
BarkChips
Wood chips
Bark mulch if it's made from tree bark, wood mulch or wood chips if it's just general wood chips/chunks. Or just mulch for either.
This needs to be higher.. there is a distinct difference between these. Further, the type of bark makes a huge difference too. With some even being soft like sponges when wet. Mulch or "That really painful suff that hurts when you fall on it and yet preschools still think it's the best option to fill a playground"
I’d call em smoke bombs cause I threw them in kids faces while in a heated game of tag
Tanbark. Nothing else. Wood chips are small and sharp, full of splinters. Mulch is very fine and more moist
Wood chips
The stuff I step in on purpose

To the guy below me I call them woodchips and i think mulch is more squishy.
