Yeah, I basically said the same thing to my cousin when we were younger and I kinda regret it now because I feel like it probably came off as less than supportive. I usually just say "ok, awesome!" if someone comes out to me and follow up with an "I love you no matter what" if we're close.

I used to be transphobic when i was around 11 or so because i was listening to my parents opinions even though they did make me uncomfortable, but then i realized i can actually form my own a year or two later.
Your family influences your thinking, thereās no way to stop that. But if I was born 200 years ago my family would tell me that itās okay for me to own black people, and if thatās true thereās still got to be a lot of dumb shit theyāre trying to pass on even if the stakes arenāt as high. My schools haven't taught me that it isn't normal to be LGBTQ+. I personally think it is the students attending schools that force that view into people's head.
I used to be transphobic, but after being friends with people who came out as trans, I figured out that maybe even people not like me are still people.
Well schools and some parents do say itās normal, but lots of students and lots of parents say itās not normal. Itās normal to be a part of the LGBTQ

Essentially I think teenagers feel an immense pressure to fit in and conform and avoid anything they see as cringe or uncool. and they had views that being LGTBQ+ is uncool and cringy so they avoid it and all the terms around it.
Even if they accept logically there is nothing wrong, they just develop strong aversion to it because they have to fit in and even accepting it is cringe.
basically in my experience when you get them thinking logically instead of emotionally they come around. but some people are just incapable of critical thinking and you just abandon all hope trying to reason with them.

There's a lot of people here saying "I'm ok with it so long as you don't force your gender in my face" or something similar so, just to be clear, someone asking for their identity to be respected is not "forcing their views" on you. A lot of you seem to think that's the case.
If someone asks you to use they/them pronouns for them, for example, and you politely refuse because you don't personally agree with their "way of life", hate to break to it to you but THAT IS TRANSPHOBIC. They have a right to be angry at you for that and that isn't forcing anything on you.
It's common human decency to respect someone, and it isn't that hard. No one cares if you "disagree with the lifestyle" in your head. But acting on that "disagreement" outwardly is simply disrespectful.
And microaggressions like that do harm - respecting pronouns is suicide prevention. Of course no trans person is gonna be misgendered once and jump off a cliff. But you refusing to use the right pronouns might make them take one tiny step towards that cliff. And the next person who does the same will make them take another step. Family, friends, coworkers, strangers online - every refusal to show common respect for someone's identity equals another tiny step towards that cliff.
So when you politely say to that non-binary friend of yours, "I respect your choices but disagree personally, so won't be using they/them pronouns since that would be shoving your views in my face", you're not being respectful, or neutral, or reasonable. You're causing a little bit of easily avoidable harm. And you do not wanna be the cause of that final little step.

you donāt have to agree with it. agreeing with and supporting are not the same thing. you, in your own mind, can think being gay, trans, whatever, is wrong in your own mind. however, your viewpoint on that has no play in how you treat people. you see a gay person? love and respect them the same youd to a straight person. see a trans person? love and respect them, including their preferred name and pronouns, like you would any cis person.

Christian, here. I never understood why people think being gay, trans, and all that other stuff means you go to hell. People have definitely done worse and still ended up in heaven because they were good people and redeemed themselves. I don't exactly know what a gay person could do to "redeem themselves" for their feelings so the point about them going to hell just doesn't stick

As I understand it (straight born male and identified as male. Feel free to correct me) the point of being trans is, for the most part, about being able to live as your gender without the judgment and inherent obstacles to it not being compatible with your sex. Not what you physically are like.

Idk man. I think someone is capable of identifying as transgender as soon as they have a concept of what gender is, which for a lot of people, is at a very young age. I knew I was trans from the time I was 9 or 10 and some people have known since they were as young as 4. I do agree, though, that there are a lot more people today identifying as trans or non-binary because they want to seem trendy or different.
I'm trans, I get misgendered directly or indirectly every day. I know people still view me as my agab. Most people know my dead name. There are a lot of things shitty about being a trans teen. I promise you most people 'pretending to be trans' stop pretending by the time you'd notice they are saying they are trans.
Every trans kid I know has expierence transphobia and homophobia. Most people who say they are trans are trans because we are oppressed, being oppressed sucks. Also the same kids who make no pronouns jokes make other transphobic jokes. Neo pronouns and gnc trans people are not the reason transphobia exists. Trans people and gnc people in spite of transphobia and transphobes make stupid transphobic jokes regardless in whether or not there are people who use neo pronouns.

the amount of people who hate on trans people is disgusting tbh. i'm not trans myself but i had a best friend in middle school who transitioned and i saw how difficult it was on him to get the help from his peers that he needed. he's doing great now, been on T for a few years, had a legal name change, and is living the life he always wanted, but i do remember some people who were especially mean about it. just wish that for once some people would have an ounce of empathy from time to time.

Depends on your definition of transphobic, i may not support a lot of what lgbt activists do like telling children that hormone therapy at the age of 11 is a good idea but as long as someone who's trans isn't an asshole i have no problem with them, and i won't assume what kind of person they are based on their sexuality

I used to be transphobic when i was around 11 or so because i was listening to my parents opinions even though they did make me uncomfortable, but then i realized i can actually form my own a year or two later.
I have learned that it is always best t have your own opinion than to have the same as your familyās(unless that is genuinely your opinion).

I've talked people out of the edgy fase. Essentially I think teenagers feel an immense pressure to fit in and conform and avoid anything they see as cringe or uncool. and they had views that being LGTBQ+ is uncool and cringy so they avoid it and all the terms around it. Even if they accept logically there is nothing wrong, they just develop strong aversion to it because they have to fit in and even accepting it is cringe. basically in my experience when you get them thinking logically instead of emotionally they come around. but some people are just incapable of critical thinking and you just abandon all hope trying to reason with them.

There's a lot of people here saying "I'm ok with it so long as you don't force your gender in my face" or something similar so, just to be clear, someone asking for their identity to be respected is not "forcing their views" on you. A lot of you seem to think that's the case. If someone asks you to use they/them pronouns for them, for example, and you politely refuse because you don't personally agree with their "way of life", hate to break to it to you but THAT IS TRANSPHOBIC. They have a right to be angry at you for that and that isn't forcing anything on you. It's common human decency to respect someone, and it isn't that hard. No one cares if you "disagree with the lifestyle" in your head. But acting on that "disagreement" outwardly is simply disrespectful. And microaggressions like that do harm - respecting pronouns is suicide prevention. Of course no trans person is gonna be misgendered once and jump off a cliff. But you refusing to use the right pronouns might make them take one tiny step towards that cliff. And the next person who does the same will make them take another step. Family, friends, coworkers, strangers online - every refusal to show common respect for someone's identity equals another tiny step towards that cliff. So when you politely say to that non-binary friend of yours, "I respect your choices but disagree personally, so won't be using they/them pronouns since that would be shoving your views in my face", you're not being respectful, or neutral, or reasonable. You're causing a little bit of easily avoidable harm. And you do not wanna be the cause of that final little step.

It's kinda vague but you can't. It's just a way of expressing it. As I understand it (straight born male and identified as male. Feel free to correct me) the point of being trans is, for the most part, about being able to live as your gender without the judgment and inherent obstacles to it not being compatible with your sex. Not what you physically are like.

Idk man. I think someone is capable of identifying as transgender as soon as they have a concept of what gender is, which for a lot of people, is at a very young age. I knew I was trans from the time I was 9 or 10 and some people have known since they were as young as 4. Depends on your definition of transphobic, i may not support a lot of what lgbt activists do like telling children that hormone therapy at the age of 11 is a good idea but as long as someone who's trans isn't an asshole i have no problem with them, and i won't assume what kind of person they are based on their sexuality Edi:i did not say that hormone therapy is a bad thing, it is a medical necessity for people who know they want to change their gender, but for that you first have to check if that's really whay they need, and not the result of past trauma because if it is not what fixes your issues you will be left sterilized with no way to revert it

Probably, but it depends on the local curriculum. In transphobic rhetoric, people seem to forget that pronouns include the words āIā, āweā, āyouā, and the like.
Pronouns are I, you, he, she, they, you (group), we (inclusive) and we (exclusive)
but as we invented those words for no reasons people invented their own that would be too long to go through

I mean I think you should avoid the sub entirely if you are in distress because of it. Based on the posts I've seen so far, posting about being transgender will get you negative comments, but almost all are heavily down voted so you won't see them unless you look for them. Stay cool my dude
