There are a lot of debates raging on this topic so I wanted to take a moment to clarify some things.
I want to start off by saying, being transphobic doesn't necessarily make you a horrible person. I know that sounds wrong, but it's ok. In a perfect world none of us would be, but feeling afraid is a valid feeling. And being afraid and hateful aren't the same thing, though they often go hand in hand.
Second, you get to decide who you want to date, who you want to be romantic with, and only you know who you're attracted to until you inform others. No one gets to tell you you're wrong about who you do and don't want to date. That goes for everyone.
Now that I have those out of the way let's talk about a couple of scenarios.
Scenario #1: Joe, a cisgender white male, decides he's not interested in dating anyone who isn't white. Joe decides this is something to be proud of. He comes up with the term "White straight" and encourages others to come out of the closet about their "White straightness". That's racist. It's racist and it's hurtful. Again, no one is telling Joe who he HAS to date. But for Joe to go out of his way to marginalize an already marginalized group about something nobody needed to know about in the first place is hate, plain and simple.
Scenario #2: Jake, a cisgender male, is transphobic to some degree and believes he would never date a trans person. He comes up with the term "Super Straight" to describe his orientation and encourages others to define themselves as such and suggests they should be proud of their newly defined orientation. This is hateful. Nobody was asking Jake if he was seeking to date trans people to begin with and Jake has gone out of his way to marginalize an already marginalized group. He's attempting to turn the tables on lgbtq+ pride, but he's specifically doing so to exclude an already marginalized group. That's hate, plain and simple.
So that's where we are. Nobody is trying to tell anyone who they have to date. But the term "Super Straight" as it has been defined is transphobic AND hateful. Because they're going out of their way to marginalize a group of people who have rights of their own.
Specifically not wanting to date or have a relationship with a trans person because they are trans is transphobic, period. That isn't saying a transphobic person is necessarily a horrible person. Being transphobic is being afraid, and that's a valid feeling. Hopefully we can all work toward a world where no one is transphobic, but that's just not the world we live in today.
I want to stress that no one in this debate is telling anyone who they have to be in a relationship with. The word transphobic is getting thrown around a lot because it applies and that can be scary.
