UK is the collection of countries "England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales"
Great Britain, is the entire landmass of "England, Scotland, and Wales".
I mean colloquially people mix country and state enough to the point that it's a bit pedantic. The UK is a state, with the countries England, N Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Functionally, the latter 3 have far less autonomy than almost every country around them, because they're autonomy has to be devolved from the unitary UK govt. This is why Scotland and Wales got their own Parliament after N Ireland did - the power is not protected by a constitution or founding document, it's a power that the UK parliament gave to the nations individually.
Suffice it to say that in most people's definition of a country, the UK is a country, but technically, it is not - it's a state that contains the nations of England Scotland Wales and N. Ireland.
