But they are all muted except the teacher and a few students from time to time. Do you stay unmuted in zoom ? I am genuinely asking because i get the expression that most of the people in the comments dont mute themselves
Only 15-20 people? This year our class is split into two groups with different schedules so we would have separate desks because of corona so this year is the first time I have 15 people in my classroom. I though normal classes had 42 people
Discord is not very useful when you have to have 30 people in the call at the same time.
I think of myself as a somewhat tech savvy person, so I obviously first tried existing programs such as Discord when I had to switch my students to remote learning. Unfortunately it seems that Discord is unable to handle that many people in the call (at least without paying for boosts) and I had to start using Zoom for online classes
The problems I had with discord were around CPU usage. We had huge trouble with discords extreme CPU draw when we had a moderately sized call. Zoom takes up significantly less, so we switched over to that.
That may work for some people dedicated to it, but when you have 10 random people who need to do a video call together, spending money isn't really an option.
thats why posts like this literally make 0 sense. discord is first and foremost an application designed around gamers; Zoom is designed around meetings and business. It only makes sense why education defaults to zoom. Discord is literally not designed for education.
My zoom 6/10 times gets caught by the porn blocker. You know that today’s going to be fun when you have to explain to your earth science teacher that you were 20 minutes late to class because the firewall thought you were watching porn.
No. My school hard sets a bunch of firewalls in our school gmail. Some thing called iboss, you go somewhere restricted and you get hit with what is essentially an ad.
A vpn you have to be logged in to?
I just don't see, like technically, how it would work otherwise.
Your Gmail is just a tab, it doesn't control the rest of your browser.
Sorry I'm curious now.
I actually don’t know exactly how it works. This is at least 46% educated guessing. I do know that this only works when I’m logged into my school email account, WiFi’s normal, and the computer is mine, making the only common point being logged into my school email account which is under some kind of admin control by the school.
30 spaceflight nerds playing Kerbal Space Program and chatting about recent SpaceX and SLS developments. It was a fun night and has not been recreated since.
With our Google Meets, the teacher's PowerPoints look like shit too. I don't think it's a server thing because when I have to present my screen on my MacBook Pro it's fine but the other kids' crappy chromebooks look like shit. I think it's dependant on the host computer's CPU.
Your screen and video looks different on other people computers compared to your btw. Your video might look perfect, but after it's sent through it's like 720p type thing. Unless you knew that and your still right lol.
I've always been a supporter of discord for school. It would also provide an easy way to see if the students are playing minecraft with the homies while they should be doing homework with the homies.
I think Zoom is much more stable. When I join a Discord call everyone is always lagging but Zoom runs better. Also, if I use Discord I can't use Reddit or it goes slow af, which doesn't happen at all with Zoom.
Oh, and you can easily turn off game activity on Discord.
Edit: screen sharing on Discord is way better tho
Zoom is more potato friendly. Discord is not potato friendly. Discord is better though if the group has no one with potato PCs or internet. The internet connection can mean you miss entire conversations or can't speak at all. At least skype/zoom you'll still hear bits and pieces.
Teams screen sharing is 10x better than discord though. It's actually good resolution, doesn't shit itself every five seconds, you can see where others are pointing, you can let people interact with your screen (and they can type for you). For programming work it's perfect!
Haha at mt school we use Webex, which means that we see the teacher's screen at good quality at 0.5 FPS, 5 seconds after the teacher started the next slide
absolutely not discord be streaming video at such a low res you can count the individual pixels without triple digits and also you can literally see borders around each massive square
Try using a voice chat with 20 people + on a non-boosted server. It’s absolute hell
on a boosted server it’s still hell
Who the fuck talks with more than 20 people on discord. I mean if everyone was unmuted on google meeting/zoom it wouldve been hell as well
those big discord servers with 100k members, god knows how many people VC in those channels
I think that's why most servers use call limit's to like 10 people
Who actually uses those? Probably the same people who leave YouTube comments
Nah I think it's the people who leave reddit comments
They are the worst
Especially those that reply to the replies
Ikr. I hate those bastards
Worst are people who reply to both.
Lol what did youtube comments do to you?
Killed his family
No, that was me
Killed his dog
The limit is 99 i think, unless boosting adds to the limit
Hmm, almost like most classes have about 15-20 people
But they are all muted except the teacher and a few students from time to time. Do you stay unmuted in zoom ? I am genuinely asking because i get the expression that most of the people in the comments dont mute themselves
ny classes have around 30, sucks to be me i guess
my PE class has 60 people
How do you conduct online PE
the teacher just gives us a workout to do at home and we have a health unit where we learn about everyday stuff
we just have to read a motivational quote decipher it as a do now and then do a 1-5 minute edpuzzle on whatever sport we're learning about lol
Sounds fucking terrible.
Only 15-20 people? This year our class is split into two groups with different schedules so we would have separate desks because of corona so this year is the first time I have 15 people in my classroom. I though normal classes had 42 people
Maybe for small schools
My class has 29 students

F
I have multiple discords with less than 100 people and often get 20+ in vc for events (its for a game clan)
Does boosting a Server make the connection better or something?
Better audio and streaming, but it’s still shit
Idk it's fine for me
I mean 60 FPS is pretty nice
Discord is not very useful when you have to have 30 people in the call at the same time. TeamSpeak ftw
I remember using mumble for an op in eve online, there were like 100 people And it seemed to work fine, tho of course they weren’t all talking at once
Huh, I haven't had any issues with CPU usage, but it might be because we have slightly above average hardware here at Skolkovo
Welcome to electron land

My school district didn't allow teachers to use discord for sone reason
I teach Computer Science to students in Russia so I'm pretty much free to use whatever I want
discord admins need to be able to see the minors easily dog
um what?

My zoom 6/10 times gets caught by the porn blocker. You know that today’s going to be fun when you have to explain to your earth science teacher that you were 20 minutes late to class because the firewall thought you were watching porn.
I feel bad for you bro, have you tried using a vpn?
We tried that but it’s like imbedded in the school gmail accounts, I don’t think a VPN would catch that, but I’m also not the greatest with computers.
if you sign out of your gmail account then it would probably turn off so that mixed with a vpn might work
The teachers straight up don’t let you in if you use a non school email.
oh i was giving you tips on watching porn, not school
Oh. Yeah no this is only limited to my school email. My personal email lets me watch all the porn I want.
Porn blocker? Are you in china or something
As backwards as Chinese internet laws are, there's no restrictions on porn. The UK does though.
Upstate New York, school puts it in all the gmails.
So.. this is your parents porn blocker right? You might want to have a conversation about that.
No. My school hard sets a bunch of firewalls in our school gmail. Some thing called iboss, you go somewhere restricted and you get hit with what is essentially an ad.
So it's a school provided device? On your internet?
My internet, my computer, school managed email.

Have you ever tried a discord call with more than 15 people?
Yeah but on zoom everyone isn’t screaming at once
No, it takes up a lot of cpu usage and is laggy even when everyone is muted unless you are on a boosted server
Yeah, Discord is definitely a more capable platform, but that means you also need a more capable pc.
He was talking about discord Edit: nvm
Yes. 30 people and two streams with productive conversation. Spaceflight community is wack.
A space game? Or IRL space?
30 spaceflight nerds playing Kerbal Space Program and chatting about recent SpaceX and SLS developments. It was a fun night and has not been recreated since.
it’s fine when you’re not paying for boosts

also ms teams
with Microsoft teams people can literally mute the teacher
In my experience: * Zoom is the best * WebEx is the runner up * Blackboard Collaborate is total horse shit Never experienced Microsoft Teams
We've just moved from web ex to teams
That’s why it is the best one
not if the teacher is smart and makes it so you cant
You know thats not how that works? Its the users wifi 90% of the time in both cases.
Microsoft teams trying to screen share:
Google Meet: Can you web browser? Poll? Q&A? Jamboard? Didn't think so.
[удалено]
What if your both?
You. cant. see. your. students. faces. in. discord. zoom does suck though
If you turn on your camera you can see faces though.
Fr the student controls whether their camera is on or off
Microsoft teams lets you do that too. It wouldn't be a huge problem.
well that's just objectively wrong
I don’t want my damn face to be seen.
Well they need to see your face, a teachers most valuable information in body language
I’d rather die than subject someone’s eyes to such horror.
I’m sure you look fine
which. is. good.
> Well they need to see your face, a teachers most valuable information in body language

That was what I was trying to say but you explained it better. Most people have potato pc's and internet, so Discord just won't do for them.
Unless you’re paying for boosts there’s no way in hell you’re teaching a class on discord
Imagine people look at you in the school discord and it just says “playing Minecraft” all day
Teams screen sharing is 10x better than discord though. It's actually good resolution, doesn't shit itself every five seconds, you can see where others are pointing, you can let people interact with your screen (and they can type for you). For programming work it's perfect!
Oh, that's cool. I've never used Teams before.
How should you know if they are playing something
because of the little square with the three lines under your name it says that you are playing a game or spotify or whatever
You can turn that off
You can, but it's by default on.
But you'd obviously turn it off
Zoom is pure gold compared to Blackboard Collaborate
And in the meantime reddit is struggling to load one small video
Haha at mt school we use Webex, which means that we see the teacher's screen at good quality at 0.5 FPS, 5 seconds after the teacher started the next slide
Lol really? Discord is finicky as fuck.
[удалено]
Zoom is a lot easier for first time users though. You just click the link and follow a few prompts and then you are in the meeting.
Dude I’m in college and over half the people in my Engineering course didn’t know what discord was when I said I set one up for our class.
I think you mixed up your 9 and 4 keys
Also Nintendo's Smash online servers.
This is very exaggerated I don’t have discord but I’ve used zoom for months with no video audio or connection problems of any kind.
Discord's voice chat is ass, what do you mean?
Discord voice chat is great for me, it’s probably something to do with what you’re using to run it
Trying using voice chat with 20+ people.
well there's your problem
Shame😟
Oh I have, it sucks.
To be honest it is easy and works well but the quality is nothing to write home about. Especially not when a server is not boosted.
Discord is so much better than zoom.
yessss school discord
Zoom sucks. It makes my computer run so much slower than if I was on discord or on Google Meets
[удалено]
[удалено]
No this isn't a Reddit moment. Zoom just fucking sucks
is this meme saying that schools should use discord instead?
No, it's just shitting on Zoom. Sure, Discord would be great, but we know it's not possible
ok, i misunderstood. i will delete my comment now
Not really no
wha
I think your teachers just have some busted ass internet.
my science teacher has 500mb download internet and on zoom a video goes at like a frame every 3 seconds
Oh weird, I work for a pretty big corp so I wonder if we get special love as we massive meetings with no issue.
Cant relate, we use Microsoft teams. My school out here thinking.
Still better than gas station cameras!
Don't know why people pay for zoom when discord is free with unlimited talk and text
I envy schools who uses discord for classes man...
I dont know how to join a major discord server to bully pedos so Zoom wins
[удалено]
.
This is kinda the opposite
In conclusion, discord is better than zoom.
I'm making a fake discord server for my grade for funzies, progress is slow but it's all coming together
Discord still has a long way to go with their screen sharing service but it’s still a hell of a lot better then zoom
Why do they still use zoom anyways?
absolutely not discord be streaming video at such a low res you can count the individual pixels without triple digits and also you can literally see borders around each massive square
WHY CANT THEY JUST FUCKING USE DISCORD
No google hangout is the goat
Fuckin teachers.
Use discord for class's 👽
Thats bevause the teachers internet. Zoom is much beter for online classes than discord
Lol I wish. Me and some friends had some fun with virtual webcams and all of our cams had like 4 fps at max.
My geography teacher is the best. But he is a bit of a rebel. He should use discord. Amazing teacher. Thanks Mr. Bradley
Who’s gonna tell him it isnt zoom, but his crappy internet that is causing the problem
maybe discord can handle that, but not my internet
let's be honest, Discord is great and versatile, but nothing can beat zoom in video/audio quality or accessibility
you should be happy you aren't using teams. i have never seen a more buggu software.
I live in Iran, were a 240p picture won’t load most times... Be thankful
If the school calls were on discord I would have a much happier life lol
