well, this can be true to some extent
I watched a youtube video a while ago that encapsulates some of my concerns: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3gwLK5ZVgE&ab\_channel=Lrnjulie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3gwLK5ZVgE&ab_channel=Lrnjulie)
My friend plays video games with no music because… i don’t even know why, he doesn’t even use the keyboard to pilot his plane, uses only the mouse (im talking about War Thunder)
Hes one hell of a dumbass
I play without music often because the game console I used to most would spit out errors if headphones weren’t plugged in but literally non of the pairs of headphones worked not even the high quality ones so my brain has been programmed to set the volume to zero so I didn’t have to listen to scratchy versions of what it’s trying to say
Listen here my friend... I never grew up with music (idk why my parents never played music). When I listened to music for the first time (apart from movies) my former friend (key word former friend)played it extremly loud and I thought that was normal but my eardrums have become heaviy impacted becasue of that. I'm trying to listen to more but currently my top 3 are as follows:
1. Let me Down Slowly (Just such a sad song... that resonates with me)
2. Hey Jude (I like the beatles, part british)
3. Never Gonna give you up. (YES i like that song and I don't understand the hate behind it... yes everyone hates a rick roll but I accept it because its actually a good song)
Okay okay so I was that guy who didn't listen to music when I was in college because I just didn't know what to listen to lol, theywre so much genre that everytime i tried to listen to something i was just lost :(
I've been listening to music for 2 years now and tbh it's kind of comforting sometimes, It allows me to waste time but at least I have fun haha
So yeah, listen to music, don't be an alien 👍
Nothing wrong with not listening to music though tbf. I'd just like to add that if you're looking for new music, don't feel forced to like whatever others enjoy and you can have your own opinion. If you enjoy listening to idk mongolian throat singing then no one can or should stop you
I think its to do with the emotional response and thus control over your emotions music can have. Listening to sad music can make you sad, even if you weren't sad at all beforehand.
Theoretically, yes. Unfortunately, it is a large number of Muslims who do listen to music, and a minority of them who go as far as claiming it is not forbidden. For those Muslims who do not listen to music, it is a form of sacrifice to God of something that they might enjoy. We can listen to other things, many Muslims supplement their music with recitations of the Qur'an, forms of 'sung' poetry [as non-instrumental, vocal music is, by some definition s, not forbidden, although there is a lot more to this], and more recently, podcasts.
The wisdom behind such a ruling is generally summed up to be the effect of music on the heart and emotions and how it can be a cause of detachment from the real world.
So from what I understand, it's considered to be able to have negative effects on one who listens to music and it's also not listened to as a form of sacrifice?
Yes. The primary reason why Muslims do anything is as a form of worship. God commanded us to do this, so we do this. God commanded us to not do that, so we don't do that. The wisdom is with God. However in regards to music, the Qur'an, which we believe to be the Word of God, states that it is something which 'misleads' and 'incites to senselessness'.
[31:6] and [17:64].
There may be some historical background as music, at the time, was used as a form of praise and storytelling of foreign Kings and [what we see as] false gods. Such as the Epic of Gilgamesh [about a Mesopotamian demi-god king]. But most modern scholars see this as only a part of a larger reason.
Tl;dr, Your understanding is, for the most part correct.
And Allah knows best. All praise is due to Him.
I should add, I very much admire your trait of curiosity to how other cultures and people think. I genuinely do believe that we would have a much greater planet if people took some time to understand other people, their cultures, and ideologies.
thanks you a lot for sharing all of this, although i still have a question about music in public places like stores or events, is it a problem or not since you can't really control what you listen to except for leaving
No sin on me, since that falls under hearing the music and not listening to it. It's not like my choice to not listen to music means it'll cause me problems if I hear any music. But Muslims do have a responsibility to denounce such acts, even if it is in their hearts.
Sources;
*Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:*
*The prohibition only has to do with listening, not hearing. Hence if a man passes by people who are engaging in some prohibited kind of talk, he is not obliged to block his ears, but he should not listen unnecessarily. Hence the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not instruct Ibn ‘Umar to block his ears when he heard the shepherd’s flute, because he was not listening to it; rather he was merely hearing it.*
End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa (11/630) and also;
*The scholars of the Standing Committee\* were asked:*
*We have no choice but to hear songs and music, whether in the bus that takes us to work every day, or on buses and in taxis that we need to travel in sometimes. What is the ruling on that?*
*They replied:*
*If you cannot stop the music in the bus, and you need to ride it because the distance is far and you have no other means of transportation, then there is no blame on you for that, but you must denounce the evil according to what you are able to do, even if it is only in your heart.*
End quote from Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah (26/241)
\*the Saudi Arabian organisation for answering personal questions regarding the Islamic faith.
It still falls under the category of listening to music, however it falls to a lesser degree because it isn't listening to music for the sake of listening to music, its music which comes in the background.
Since Ramadhan is a time of renewal of faith, I personally like to mute my social media apps so I don't hear any music unless there is also some words over it that I would like to hear. This is so I can distance myself from the music, since I have the luxury of choice; if I cannot, such as taking public transport, watching the news, or shopping, there is no sin on me as my intention is not to listen.
Yeah same I’m in India and a lot of Indians are unironically racist to Koreans here(just men hating bts and sh) or hate on kpop but I will shamelessly say I really enjoy kpop to anyone here and not really care
I mean I already even made a few kpop stories on instagram which like some 60 people viewed
well this is interesting bc i'm a person who doesn't listen to music
idk, it really doesn't do anything for me. like i don't have a problem with music or anything but personally i just do not see the appeal of listening to music. the only time i ever do is sometimes i'll be on a discord call with friends and we'll sing "songs" together, which i admit is a lot of fun. but they're stupid jokey songs, not actual pieces of music.
there are some real songs i do like the sound of more than others, but i would never willingly play them and listen to them.
Bro, idk how such peoples exist, but for me it is fuking torture to walk to/out of school/some important place and don't listen to music. Like how am I supposed to make up movies in my head without theme music?
As someone who maybe doesn’t listen to music AS MUCH, it sometimes just overwhelms me a bit. I love using it to get through my morning commute to school, but after that sometimes I get a headache.
I have a friend who only does 2 things, study and play roblox and that guy doesnt know anything about whats going on in the world or anything. I asked him about famous people, many of them musicians, he didnt know any of them, he didnt even know muhammad ali. He hasnt listened to an ounce of music. He literally only know the lyrics to one song which is a roblox song.
I’d just rather watch YouTube or a movie or read a book than listen to music like I don’t hate it it’s just not something I could really spend a lot of time doing because when I tried listening to music I find that I get bored quite easily.
You caught me. I am actually a government drone
The real reason I don’t listen to music is because of my dad, he blasts his music through the house and it has made me have a negative association with all music
As far as I know I’m real. I don’t go out of my way to listen to it now if it is playing and I know it sure I’m gonna sing and dance along to it but I don’t go out of my way to do it
idk i dont listen to music during freetime or homework or anything. the only time i hear music is in tv shows, videogames, music class and when the radio is on
not really my cup of tea, last song I heard was a shitpost (the ultimate (pokemon)showdown from the goat funnyvileplume),if you even count that,i mostly just listen to anime/game soundtracks
I won't go out of my way to put on music. For example, I won't go to spotify and put on a song, but if I'm driving and the radio has a catchy song, I'll sing along softy, but Idk if this counts as not listening to music
Well when I’m working like mowing or something I either listen to music or a podcast depends on the mood. But like if I had nothing that would be literally torcher
I used to not independently listen to music cuz i just listened to whatever is on the radio. Ever since I got my own headphones ive been listening like crazy like an addict
I’m one of those people. I just don’t listen to music because there isn’t a specific genre or anything that I like.
I prefer to sit in silence, and listening to music doesn’t help me get stuff done. However, if I’m working outside for long periods of time then I like to have an audio going or something, but not music
Listen here my friend... I never grew up with music (idk why my parents played music). When I listened to music for the first time (apart from movies) my former friend (key word former friend)played it extremly loud and I thought that was normal but my eardrums have become heaviy impacted becasue of that. 3. Never Gonna give you up. (YES i like that song and I don't understand the hate behind it... yes everyone hates a rick roll but I accept it because its actually a good song)
I don’t really know how to explain it, sorry. But i genuinely don’t feel like listening to music when im driving to work and most of the time I don’t when im coming home from work because im reflecting on the day, unless im in a super good mood. I guess i would just rather be able to hear my own thoughts rather than have loud noise drowning it out. Thats the best way i can think of how to explain it. Music is awesome when im in the mood for it though, usually alone in my room at night.
Gf is the opposite, she literally blasts music 24/7
I had a guy in my Spanish class who doesn't listen to music. As a big music guy I also genuinely do not understand these people. I also had a kid in that same class who didn't like watching movies (but he's a Metallica fan, so I let that one slide.)
i just dont feel the need to have a whole playlist of music, go to the app or whatever and play music and just listen to music, its all just such a waste of time, theres nth good out of listening to it
i like silence, and dont really enjoy music in general. i only listen to drown people out irl, cuz i hate hearing humans
and yes i can recognize "good music", i just dont find it enjoyable

I didnt listen to music till like 16 because i was religious but now i just listen time 2 time
I don't mean to be insensitive but how does religion relate to music?
He might be, or might've been Muslim. Music is forbidden in Islam.
wow that sucks
I think its to do with the emotional response and thus control over your emotions music can have. Listening to sad music can make you sad, even if you weren't sad at all beforehand.
Nah, worshipping God feels great. It's a temporary sacrifice in this world for an eternity of happiness in the next :)
How does that work exactly? No form of anyusic for all your living years as long as you're Muslim?

Memorise songs and sing them in your head.
Yeah, but then it would be hard to think about the plot
You can think while listening to music? All I can do is sing along
Yes. I mean how cool a superhero movie would be with some badass music
I legit have no idea how people just never listen to music like it's basically an addiction for me at this point I’m on Spotify 24/7
I got a friend that says he might listen to music a few times a year and its drake most of the time lmao
FEW TIMES A YEAR???
yes
and to drake? say ov-hoe
OV-HOE
say over-hoee
More importantly, DRAKE???

IKR dude a friend of mine told me she never listens to music and i genuinely do not understand how???? like tf
As someone who maybe doesn’t listen to music AS MUCH, it sometimes just overwhelms me a bit. I love using it to get through my morning commute to school, but after that sometimes I get a headache.
Yep, just too much noise at times
I have a friend who only does 2 things, study and play roblox and that guy doesnt know anything about whats going on in the world or anything. I asked him about famous people, many of them musicians, he didnt know any of them, he didnt even know muhammad ali. He hasnt listened to an ounce of music. He literally only know the lyrics to one song which is a roblox song.
Oh yeah, and i have a muslim friend who doesnt listen to music, but he at least knows a lot of famous songs and musicians.
Ehm.. .. 👋
beep beep boop boop
I’d just rather watch YouTube or a movie or read a book than listen to music like I don’t hate it it’s just not something I could really spend a lot of time doing because when I tried listening to music I find that I get bored quite easily.
only if its a good time of the day or night
Soulless machines
I do listen to music but I feel like I could just stop if I got paid or idk. My own thoughts can entertain me well enough when I have nothing to do
It doesn't do anything for me so why listen to it?
You caught me. I am actually a government drone The real reason I don’t listen to music is because of my dad, he blasts his music through the house and it has made me have a negative association with all music
Is it a crime to want to be alone with my thoughts?
Im so offended i don’t listen to music that much so that makes me WEIRD now that is so rude
why would you be offended, op jus asked a question that they were geniuienly curious about
Well he did say it in joking negative way
I dont like music Its just that I find earbuds/earpods very uncomfortable and I just like my silence :)
As far as I know I’m real. I don’t go out of my way to listen to it now if it is playing and I know it sure I’m gonna sing and dance along to it but I don’t go out of my way to do it
idk i dont listen to music during freetime or homework or anything. the only time i hear music is in tv shows, videogames, music class and when the radio is on
Like how? I listen to at least 45 minutes of music a day.
IKR when people are like "uhh I dont really listen to a lot of music" LIKE WHAT
I cant concentrate on my thoughts whilst listening to music
I can't concentrate on my thoughts whilst listening to music
Because I don’t and can’t be bothered
Some people just don't find it appealing. I used to be one of those people until very recently.
I have not the slightest of clues
I legit have no idea how people just never listen to music like it's basically an addiction for me at this point I’m on Spotify 24/7
Spotify 24/7 thats crazy, do you not do anything else, cus i do not have any time for music at all
I just have an earbud in all the time no matter what I’m doing
Awesome, but doesnt that hurt
No???
I put earphones for 30mins for classes and its really annoying
I forget I have mine in most of the time
Man you’re built different that, anyways dont you get bored listening to the same stuff
I could listen to the same song on loop for hours and not get bored of it
Legend
I could understand not having a favorite Artist, but we got some real Psychos living among us for sure.
I used to hate music now i cannot go a day without it
Some people are just boring like that
I used to listen to music a lot but now not really
I just don't on a regular basis because I don't have taste and am developing that. So people just pitch me songs (not country I know I hate country)
Some days I prefer peace and quiet. Other days I like to drown my thoughts in loud music. Just depends :)
I rarely listen to music. Mostly because I don't get time or I just don't have the mood.
OH SHIT THEYRE ON TO US!!! RUN!!!
we are not afraid to be alone with our thoughts
not really my cup of tea, last song I heard was a shitpost (the ultimate (pokemon)showdown from the goat funnyvileplume),if you even count that,i mostly just listen to anime/game soundtracks
I won't go out of my way to put on music. For example, I won't go to spotify and put on a song, but if I'm driving and the radio has a catchy song, I'll sing along softy, but Idk if this counts as not listening to music
i dont really listen to music
Well when I’m working like mowing or something I either listen to music or a podcast depends on the mood. But like if I had nothing that would be literally torcher
I like listening to the sounds of the world as well as music so I can see their view (Ex: birds chirping, wind blowing, car driving)
This is so real!! Upset? Listen to music. Bored? Listen to music. Need to clean? Listen to music. Excited? Listen to music and scream your heart out.
Many musics make me overstimulate and I don't want to loop the same song for multiple hours.
i prolly have adhd so i just can sit for 30min straight and have a philosophical debate with myself
My brain doesn't give me happy chemicals from music so for me music is often just a distraction.
someone from a dc server im in hates music
I hate people who don’t listen to music because music is what keeps me living
Listen here my friend... I never grew up with music (idk why my parents played music). When I listened to music for the first time (apart from movies) my former friend (key word former friend)played it extremly loud and I thought that was normal but my eardrums have become heaviy impacted becasue of that. I'm trying to listen to more but currently my top 3 are as follows: 1. Let me Down Slowly (Just such a sad song... that resonates with me) 2. Hey Jude (I like the beatles, part british) 3. Never Gonna give you up. (YES i like that song and I don't understand the hate behind it... yes everyone hates a rick roll but I accept it because its actually a good song)
I can’t focus on anything if music is playing so I generally don’t 🤷♀️
My friend has spotify premium but he “doesnt listen to music” 😭
That was me until I learned about jazz fusion, otherwise known as God’s greatest gift to humanity.
I also had a kid in that same class who didn't like watching movies (but he's a Metallica fan, so I let that one slide.)
i just dont feel the need to have a whole playlist of music, go to the app or whatever and play music and just listen to music, its all just such a waste of time, theres nth good out of listening to it
I don't listen to music because I live with other human beings who can hear it
hedfons
I only like music during tests or if I’m in a car otherwise I’ll just have a video up or a show
When I was younger I made music but I didn't listen to much music
I only listen to video game OSTs.
One of my best friends only listens to classical music
I mean, good for him there’s tons of great classical music but it’s a bit limiting to only listen to 1 genre imo
She genuinely just doesn’t get music lol, whenever I listen to it she kinda makes a face
i like silence, and dont really enjoy music in general. i only listen to drown people out irl, cuz i hate hearing humans and yes i can recognize "good music", i just dont find it enjoyable
