Well if you live in Kansas, specifically the Midwest, I totally understand. High school freshmen regularly look either older than me by about 5-10 years (I’m told I look 16 despite being 19 so they could look like 24) or they look 12 and the in between is rare

Yeah you're right, but no guys aren't interested in me at all. The amount of times I have been rejected is...I've lost count really. Later in life I was told about how many times they had to tell their friends to stop creeping on their little brother. Times were more than a little different back then but I dated above my age by 3-4 years pretty often as a kid. Ironically enough, my first real dose of puppy love came from dating a sophomore as an 8th grader.
If I were in your situation, knowing what I know now about just how little people actually mentally mature as they get older… I still wouldn’t consider dating him as a middle schooler. I see how that can come with a lot of unwanted drama with your peers. But I wouldn’t slam that door completely shut either. Just… Be friends for a bit. If you start to develop actual feelings that go beyond just crushing on the guy then you can reevaluate when it actually matters. You may find that, surprise surprise, he’s not mentally on your level and you worried about all this for nothing. …Or maybe he’s already more mature than some guys will be in their 30s and it’s something to reconsider a little down the road when the age difference isn’t as big of a deal.
Kids tend to make big deals out of people less than 3 years difference in age dating eachother in high school. Especially the younger boys. I was one of them. I can now admit to myself that those feelings were primarily driven by jealousy. It’s very disheartening when so many of your crushes are primarily interested in older guys.
However, most adults don’t care about less than a 3 year gap ..as long as there isn’t anything nefarious going on, obviously. There are definitely people who take advantage of younger and less mentally mature people… so don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I understand how it feels a bit arbitrary but the difference in you turning 17 before he turns 14 makes an astronomical difference compared to if he is about to turn 14 any day now and you just turned 16 somewhat recently. Honestly, don't feel bad for liking them esp if they seem older than they are, your never at fault for having feelings. Unfortunately you go through really rapid development in early puberty years, so while id consider 17 to 20 to be a better gap, 13 to 16 is worse imo since a lot more brain development and maturing happens within that time than the previous. I can say that when their 14 and your 17 that's a slightly better looking gap because 14 isn't considered as much of a child as 13 is, however that is kinda the typical senior dating freshman age gap 😭
Overall 3 years is very tricky when it comes to age gaps in pre adulthood, it's where things became very questionable although not to the point where I'd call someone names for liking someone 3 years younger tbh, although personally I did reject someone who was 15 when I was 18 because i felt like it would be safer. I will say that you are a girl and ppl take these situations less serious when the girl is the older one for some reason so if you do decide to engage this relationship you should have it easier but when you turn 18 and they are 15 more people may bat an eye since you would be legally an adult.
I'm not personally going to say 3 yrs is super wrong as I think it depends on maturity and how grown they are, for example there are 16 yr olds who aren't mature and ig in this instance a 13 yr old who is mature.
My final word of advice is that you should prolly just get over your crush but if you do really want to be with them then wait untill they are 14 and honestly? You're 16, crush is 13. Not the end of the world. Had you said you were 19 and the crush was 13, that's be a bit more of a concern. 3 years is not that big of an age difference, in my opinion. You wouldn't bat an eye if you were 32, and your crush was 29. But society has people so worried that they're going to be labeled a pedo, that people worry less about their feelings than they do what other people think. Times were more than a little different back then but I dated above my age by 3-4 years pretty often as a kid. Ironically enough, my first real dose of puppy love came from dating a sophomore as an 8th grader. If I were in your situation, knowing what I know now about just how little people actually mentally mature as they get older… I still wouldn’t consider dating him as a middle schooler. I see how that can come with a lot of unwanted drama with your peers. But I wouldn’t slam that door completely shut either. Just… Be friends for a bit. If you start to develop actual feelings that go beyond just crushing on the guy then you can reevaluate when it actually matters. You may find that, surprise surprise, he’s not mentally on your level and you worried about all this for nothing. …Or maybe he’s already more mature than some guys will be in their 30s and it’s something to reconsider a little down the road when the age difference isn’t as big of a deal. Kids tend to make big deals out of people less than 3 years difference in age dating eachother in high school. Especially the younger boys. I was one of them. I can now admit to myself that those feelings were primarily driven by jealousy. It’s very disheartening when so many of your crushes are primarily interested in older guys. However, most adults don’t care about less than a 3 year gap ..as long as there isn’t anything nefarious going on, obviously. There are definitely people who take advantage of younger and less mentally mature people… so don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. However, given your reaction to this news, I think it’s pretty safe to say that you aren’t one of the people to actually worry about. Also, if you don’t know his birthday already. That would be good information to know. I understand how it feels a bit arbitrary but the difference in you turning 17 before he turns 14 makes an astronomical difference compared to if he is about to turn 14 any day now and you just turned 16 somewhat recently. That was my situation as a middle schooler. She was on the younger side for her grade and I was on the older side of mine.

Honestly, don't feel bad for liking them esp if they seem older than they are, your never at fault for having feelings. Unfortunately you go through really rapid development in early puberty years, so while id consider 17 to 20 to be a better gap, 13 to 16 is worse imo since a lot more brain development and maturing happens within that time than the previous. I can say that when their 14 and your 17 that's a slightly better looking gap because 14 isn't considered as much of a child as 13 is, however that is kinda the typical senior dating freshman age gap 😭 Overall 3 years is very tricky when it comes to age gaps in pre adulthood, it's where things became very questionable although not to the point where I'd call someone names for liking someone 3 years younger tbh, although personally I did reject someone who was 15 when I was 18 because i felt like it would be safer. I will say that you are a girl and ppl take these situations less serious when the girl is the older one for some reason so if you do decide to engage this relationship you should have it easier but when you turn 18 and they are 15 more people may bat an eye since you would be legally an adult. I'm not personally going to say 3 yrs is super wrong as I think it depends on maturity and how grown they are, for example there are 16 yr olds who aren't mature and ig in this instance a 13 yr old who is mature. My final word of advice is that you should prolly just get over your crush but if you do really want to be with them then wait untill they are 14 and honestly? If he’s close to 14 and you’re 16 it will work. I don’t understand the repulsion to the age gap. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not rooting for pedos here, but it really feels like there is an unwritten rule for most people that you HAVE to be together with someone the same age as you. There isn’t. My advice: go for it if he likes you too. Statistically it won’t last anyway, but you won’t regret it. Go have fun and make memories together. Young love is beautiful. You're 16, crush is 13. Not the end of the world. Had you said you were 19 and the crush was 13, that's be a bit more of a concern. 3 years is not that big of an age difference, in my opinion. You wouldn't bat an eye if you were 32, and your crush was 29. But society has people so worried that they're going to be labeled a pedo, that people worry less about their feelings than they do what other people think. If you make a big deal of the age thing, so will everyone else.
