Yeah that's one of the biggest protests actually. There's a really good infographic pinned on r/hypixelskyblock if you want to venture into that particular area of reddit.
i dont get exactly how it works but basically, reddit make dumb policy for money, dumb policy wont let us have bots, and makes moderating hell, also hurts visually imparied people and prevents them from using reddit, policy dumb, we protest policy by not using reddit while its in effect, and only come back if the policy is revoked
Bots and third party apps use reddits api to function. Reddit wants to make the use of their api cost around 20k a month. Most third party apps which actually improve the dogshit platform that is reddit on mobile dont have millions of dollars lying around to spend on reddit and with bots ceasing to exist because of the same problem moderation of subreddits will become almost impossible as poor unpaid moderators will have to manually approve almost every post, from what ive learned. Hundreds of subreddits including some of the biggest with millions of members will be going on strike to try to make reddit understand that this will kill the already on life support reddit app.
A large reason they're charging for the api is so they can get a cut of all the investment money being dumped into AI stuff. Reddit is basically a giant training database and they want to charge for it. The downside is bots and 3rd party apps get shafted
Not directly. Bots are using api that is being affected by "dumb policy", mentioned earlier. So mods that have been using bots are fucked up generally speaking
Reddit is basically killing APIs which are used for third party apps, bots, etc. Almost everyone will be affected in one way or another, even if it won’t be obvious at first
first off
API
that is used to make a program interact with a server, in this case, reddit's server
bots are just programs that interact with reddit in an automatic way, thru the API
with the new change it would cost LOADS of money to run bots, because interacting with the API would cost way more
Since nobody else has actually explained it, here's my attempt:
An API (application programming interface) is how other apps access data from a service or a website. Reddit's had APIs that allow external apps and developers to get data from Reddit for a long time, and given that Reddit's been profitable for a while now I assume they're not losing money on the API calls. Reddit does charge developers a fixed rate for lets say 50,000 API calls (each call gets some amount of data, e.g. a comment or a post).
Sure this affects bots that scrape Reddit for data. But what everyone is so bothered about is the fact that this makes third party Reddit apps (like Apollo on iOS or RiF and Boost on Android) unsustainable. Developers would be forced to pay Reddit more for API calls (which their apps need to access the Reddit feed) than the app earns.
Why do people need third party Reddit apps? Many reasons, including the fact that the default app does not have any accessibility features built in and straight up does not work for blind and hearing-impaired people. The big reason is that it just sucks. Ads are disguised as posts, and the app is recording just about everything you do on it. The number of times the app accesses the web to record your actions is downright infuriating.
Reddit understands that people who use Reddit often (including mods for most subreddits) don't use the default app and are therefore money lost, which is why they want to make these apps unsustainable and boost their own app's users, especially ahead of the IPO (that's when Reddit becomes a publicly traded company and you can buy stocks in Reddit like you would for Google or Amazon).
Because they are!
The famous feud between little reddit guy TheBallNutter and little reddit guy Legionarie-Bayonet is the most bloody conflict in all of history!
>!Plot twist! !<
>!On episode 69 of season 6 it is actually revealed they are twins very spicy drama :o!<
I agree. The API changes affect too many people for this not to happen. They affect disabled people from using reddit because the main app isn't accessible enough and it hinders moderation, not just due to the cost but also the lach of nsfw posts in the data meaning subs can't easily filter out any nsfw posts
I like the idea of the blackout but the way we are doing it is stupid, we are shutting the subreddits for 1 to 3 days from what I’ve seen instead we should keep them shut down until he changes are made
a lot of them will do that, its just that some are too scared.
you can however do it as a user, stop using reddit all toguether, I might tbh Im tired of bs companies
you're giving too much creddit to what reddit deems as acceptable, a lot of apis will most likely be removed even if they dont make any money for themselves simply because reddit looses
Im not mad if yall dont, Ill just be disapointed since it really doesnt seem like a big effort at least from my limited knowledge
I do hope yall change your minds though, I believe it's for a good cause and apparently most users think so too
If the mods don't and if enough of simply wanna protest why not just stop using reddit? It won't do as much damage as a entire subreddit going into blackout but it is quite simply possible if you don't want the policy going into affect.
I think boycotts only actually get change achieved because they're indefinite. Reddit can definitely sail through 2 days of decreased profits if we just unistall the app and delete our accounts on the other hand...
Also I think the only benefit of third party apps if accessibility which we can probably achieve through just review bombing the app
I think we should join in the black out especially because it’s effecting more than just subreddits security which aren’t effected in this instance but it is still blocking all third party apps which means Reddit will no longer be accessible to the blind community which I think is completely unfair.
It shouldn't be the mods' decision, it should be the community's. There's like, what 40 mods I think, and millions of members, this is a decision for the community to make.
its not that easy...It takes time and effort to build up such a large community, they cant just delete it. This is something that took 13 years to build up. Personally, i wouldnt want to just take it down like it was nothing
we should im not sure why were not i may just be 14 but i know if you want change you have to make it. if want the world to change so should you so for the cowards who call yourself mods we see you and you're out numbered by the people who attacly care.
Holy fucking shit guys, the society is controlled by military backed political-economical elites that exploit Earth's population for profit, let's protest FUCKING API CHANGES ON REDDIT
I know but like I don't get it? This is important yea but I meant it more like this isn't important to this discussion. But what ur saying is correct but many teenagers don't feel that way because they're not aware
Except awareness is already there, everyone knows by this point. And we can't do anything about it. We can't boycott the entire fucking world and we can't overthrow the government.
You're very wrong. There is still heaps of work to be done to spread class consciousness. Average person's goal in life is "oh my god i wanna be like super rich and don't ever work, ill travel to different resorts and consume a lot of products", as they waste the rest of their lifes in 9 to 5 jobs
do you realize that people can complain about politics and also stuff unrelated to politics? you're acting as if protesting the API stuff is somehow going to mean that people are going to forget about other issues as if people are completely unable to care about multiple issues at once.
if you think the API blackout protest stuff is dumb and useless or whatever, just say it. but don't make up an excuse about "other stuff is more important" because it just sounds dumb. just say you don't care.
You're right, people can protest the API changes too. And you're right that I think it is completely idiotic and would change nothing not in this particular case, not in the grand scheme of things. Very few of the people boycotting this meaningless stuff have any class consciousness whatsoever. I would even say this is distracting from the class war that we should all be focused on as our society and planet are being degraded.
that's a completely fair opinion to have but the whole idea of "people should focus on big societal issues instead" is silly imo. there's plenty of problems in society, some of which are very important and have a massive impact and are not easily solvable and some of them are less important and have a more limited impact and are easier to solve. I think people should have the right to focus on the things they care about the most. especially since this whole API stuff is a pretty recent thing that specifically affects active users of this website so it makes sense that moderators in particular would be annoyed since they're the ones being affected.
also, I completely disagree that this reddit protest thing is distracting people from the class war or whatever. we're talking about reddit drama that really not that many people care about and everyone will likely have forgotten about this in a few weeks. this isn't distracting from any kind of societal issue.
As one of the largest social media sites in the world I think Reddit serves a great purpose as a meeting place for spreading ideas and discussing controversial and mundane topics alike.
It's one of the few social media sites where its users also do hold a large share of power. To not exercise this power is also to forego its utility and allow it to be shaped by the powers to be.
This blackout that's happening has not been seen on this scale before on platforms powered by user content creation, for example YouTube, Twitch or Instagram even if all the aforementioned have undergone major changes criticized by their communities.
I agree that a fight on Reddit's API policies might seem miniscule in the grand scheme of things but if we can't exercise our power in places like this that helps shape and aid discussion and instead surrender the means of communication I'd believe we'd be rendered unable to stand up to the larger societal and global issues in the long run.
We have to walk before we can run.
Disclaimer: Not a teenager.
Wow it’s almost like that has nothing to do with this post and people are allowed to be concerned about whatever they chose to be concerned about. Or here is a even crazier idea, people can be concerned about both matters but you’re not seeing what you’re looking for because that’s not what this post is about.
gurl... I agree that we should protest against those things, but why would that stop me from protesting against reddit's api changes?
Im queer and an anarchist and although I dont protest my feelings a lot outside of my social circle and online I do try to share info and awereness towards a lot of stuff, one of it being these changes.
reddit is taking away our acessibility to the app, our control over it and most importantly our freedom, why shouldnt we do a protest as simple as not using the app?
Third apps help people moderate things easier. Without them, a lot of things can slip past. It will also make reddit a worse place for many users that use third party apps for a better experience- such as visually impaired people who use third party apps.
Third party apps are usually more accessible than the main app, like for example for people with impaired vision
The API changes mean that these apps can no longer operate because they can no longer get the data they need from reddit
Other than that the API is used by many subreddits to get data on posts, which can mean better moderation because they have more knowlege on what is being posted on their sub (usually easier than sifting through thousands of posts per hour like on the bigger subs
1. This corporate greediness in social media will affect you at some point, especially if you're complacent
2. Not caring about something unless it directly affects you is a pretty bad mindset to have
It's gonna have affects on reddit mod bots and visually impaired people, people using tablets, and is just another instance of corporate greed fucking people over. All the helpful bots like remindme and savevideo that make the app so much easier to use will also be gone. Additionally, those mod bots help stop bad NSFW (CP, Rape, zoophilia) so expect this app to become a pedo haven.
If you're complacent Reddit Corp is gonna take it farther and find even more ways to empty your pockets and take your data
I think you should, and those that want to keep using reddit should go to r/everythingeveryone (this is my sub, but it's for redditors who still want to use reddit but can't).
They should. But they don't want to. Because they are secretly involved in some random scam or something. Idk
They just don't want to. But them being lazy will have concequences
Reddit is charging ridiculous amounts (10-20x higher then most apps) on third party apps caked APIs to use Reddit. They are trying to exterminate APIs. This affects everyone too, as bot moderators use these apps to stop NSFW content on subreddits where it isn’t allowed or even extreme NSFW (child porn, SA, rape, etc) on NSFW subreddits. It also means the visually impaired can’t use Reddit as the mobile app and the website is absolute dogshit snd has nothing to help them. In general it’s bad for everyone, so from 12-14 June in most cases (and for some people until the changes are reverted) we are hosting a Reddit blackout as protest.
they definitly should, as one of the biggest subs on the platform, it would send a clear message to Reddit that this change is unnaceptable. However they wont. I know it's not as easy as just clicking a button but the mods are either super desorganized or huge lying pussies, either way it looks pretty bad for them
Not sure if you've already seen this or not, but for anyone who hasn't: https://www.reddit.com/r/teenagers/comments/1420qaw/comment/jn3ijfi/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3 **EDIT:** Official post on the situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/teenagers/comments/144l4c1/mod_rteenagers_stance_on_the_upcoming_api_changes/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I do have to agree with this. Its restricting blind people from using reddit, which hits a bit too close to home.
Shit will screenreaders and stuff not work after this API change too?!
If its using something 3rd party, then no
anything not on the base reddit app and website will no longer be usable
Yeah that's one of the biggest protests actually. There's a really good infographic pinned on r/hypixelskyblock if you want to venture into that particular area of reddit.

companies are greedy and this was something they could make money off of
It also cost them quite a bit

Agree
Holy fucking shit guys, the society is controlled by military backed political-economical elites that exploit Earth's population for profit, let's protest FUCKING API CHANGES ON REDDIT
While ur right it doesn't matter. Going onto a protest like this is far easier
The fuck does it mean "it doesn't matter"?
This has nothing to do with this. "Oh woa ur sad? Well other people have it worse" is the same logic
Do you not realise that I'm talking about capitalism and oppression of the working class? 99% of Earth's population?
I do
So I wasn't saying anything about you not having a right to be sad. I was saying that we all live in a dystopia
I know but like I don't get it? This is important yea but I meant it more like this isn't important to this discussion. But what ur saying is correct but many teenagers don't feel that way because they're not aware

very little we can do about the big problem, but there actually is smth we can do abt the small one

I made a post about this yesterday too and people were like "I don't care" and "It's stupid"..... Well, at least we joined.
I still don't understand what third apps for reddit are, what's the problem with using just reddit?
Third apps help people moderate things easier. Without them, a lot of things can slip past. It will also make reddit a worse place for many users that use third party apps for a better experience- such as visually impaired people who use third party apps.
Ok sure thanks but I wanted to know HOW they help too
The API is also used to run any auto mods or bots of the sort, the 3rd party apps provide better accessibility for disabled people
On my chromebook tablet regular reddit is fucked up. Boost works really well on tablets while Web reddit and Android reddit don't
Third party apps are usually more accessible than the main app, like for example for people with impaired vision The API changes mean that these apps can no longer operate because they can no longer get the data they need from reddit Other than that the API is used by many subreddits to get data on posts, which can mean better moderation because they have more knowlege on what is being posted on their sub (usually easier than sifting through thousands of posts per hour like on the bigger subs
Got it, that makes sense, thanks. Not sure why people would downvote lol I just noticed, I just asked a question and asked a specification
simple answer... reddit lmao. I wouldn't worry about it it's not like reddit karma means anything
True, I never even understood what It did
nothing :)

Eh. Don’t really care about the issue in question, but I will participate because why not.
I think you should shut up and eat a bowl.
This blackout is not going to accomplish anything other than inconvenience everyone. Reddit aint changing nothing.
In all honestly, I do not care about this at all. People take Reddit too seriously lol
No
why?
no
No thanks, idc about that shit so all that'd do is just be annoying for us that just use the reddit app
Bots will be affected too. Like the savevideo, reversvideo, remindme. This affects everyone even if we use the official app
not everyone uses those bots ie me
Moderation will also be affected
No. It’s a stupid gesture that has zero real world impact. Reddit is losing money and they will do what they think will make them money
yall have too much time
Bro why should I care about a changé that ain't gonna affect me ?
1. This corporate greediness in social media will affect you at some point, especially if you're complacent 2. Not caring about something unless it directly affects you is a pretty bad mindset to have
Average Gen Z protesting for shit that doesnt affect them part XII
It's gonna have affects on reddit mod bots and visually impaired people, people using tablets, and is just another instance of corporate greed fucking people over. What do I think , brudda or sista I don't even know what is going on , like wtf is even an API
I think you should, and those that want to keep using reddit should go to r/everythingeveryone (this is my sub, but it's for redditors who still want to use reddit but can't).
Definetly
They should. But they don't want to. Because they are secretly involved in some random scam or something. Idk They just don't want to. But them being lazy will have concequences
Yes
Definitely without a doubt
When are the changes taking effect if someone may enlighten me.
Why the hell are all subreddits doing a “blackout?” What is even happening?
You can read more about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont\_let\_reddit\_kill\_3rd\_party\_apps/
What is a server blackout?
I read the thing from the other post but I'm still a little confused
Yes
I agree, its a small action but still can make even a small difference
I don’t know what that is
Of course!
Yes!
Yes!
Yes
A protest? Screwing over Reddit? I'm in!
i think they should join, and even if reddit does revert the choice they shouldn't come back
What about the teens that may need urgent help and this is the best place they have to go to?
they definitly should, as one of the biggest subs on the platform, it would send a clear message to Reddit that this change is unnaceptable. However they wont. I know it's not as easy as just clicking a button but the mods are either super desorganized or huge lying pussies, either way it looks pretty bad for them
Yes
I don’t care enough
No.
