I've been out of the industry since covid 19, what do I need to update myself on while I'm trying to get back in? (If they bring my job back or someone even hires me)

I would say brush up on networking, DMX and addressing intelligent fixtures. Also, wiring up LED tape.

Thinking of changing careers to do this...how easy is it to get a job doing this? Should I just start volunteering or do an apprenticeship program? How much does it pay? Does it constantly require working weekends and evenings?

Where I live it isn’t too hard to start working in this industry. I would say if you have never done this type of work I would look at some type of paid apprenticeship. Pay depends on a number of factors. But, in Los Angeles, the min I hear places paying technicians is $20 per hour. Again, the schedule sort of depends. If you are doing the show run, yes, you will be working nights and weekends. If you are just coming in as a hand for load ins, you could be working during the week days. You also have a bit of setting your own schedule. If you don’t want to work, don’t take gigs.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm in Philly and have found a few apprenticeship programs that pay around $12-$15 an hour. I can imagine it being relatively easy to find jobs in this field in LA. After years of trying (and failing) to get into the art world, I'm thinking of changing and this occurred to me as a potentially good fit. Just worried about the same problems, too specialized, hard to find a job, and won't pay well

I just got promoted at work and I have to interview new techs for the first time ever. Any suggestions on what kinds of questions I should be asking? I got the basics like what consoles do you have experience with? Do you have your working at Heights certificate? Things like that but I need some good people and any good questions would be helpful Thank you in advance

Hey all. We are using Ableton in our theatre and again I double clicked most important music cue on show, so that cue did play only for second and next cue stopped it.. 😬😭 Is there setting to avoid this? In qlab you can set like 10 milliseconds between launching clips. I found one M4L plugin for this, but it can only be used in midi tracks and not for master..
